<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
-3-
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
Naturellement) cette disposition est applicable au cas ou on a deux ou plusieurs moteurs accouplés en série ou en pa- rallèle;

Dans ce cas, la puissance absorbée par ledit moteur n'est pas complètement dissipée sous la forme de chaleur;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Control system for direct current traction motors
It is known that by associating a dynamotor divider of the line voltage with one or more traction motors with compensation or compound excitation so that during the starting operation the motors are subjected to a scale of progressively increasing voltages. , we obtain the starting 'of the train without using rheostats and that under the same conditions the vehicle can be braked up to.
its complete shutdown by subjecting the motors to the same voltage scale but in decreasing order
It is also known that this recovery is obtained with regeneration of the cynetic energy of the train and this recovery is completely automatic, that is to say, it does not require special maneuvers to recover, since the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The same control positions are also used for starting and braking, yet the worker is ready to produce it from any control position.
Finally, it is known that, in order to reduce the maximum current on the motors and consequently the annoying shocks for the passengers, in many cases, it is necessary to insert in the motor armature circuit, a small rheostat which remains in circuit during the passage from one voltage to another and which is short-circuited by a special differential relay, barely the current dropped below a certain limit.
The object of the present invention is to further reduce the maximum current passing from one voltage to the other so as to make walking quite regular both when starting and when braking. In fact, the current wave which occurs in motors when switching from one voltage to another., Despite the temporary insertion of the resistors, always presents a very steep front because, during said passage, due to interruption of the current and as a consequence of the action of the compound, the motor becomes partially de-energized on starting and over-energized during braking, that is to say in the worst possible conditions to withstand the voltage jump which is positive when starting and negative when braking.
By the present arrangement this fact is eliminated, since by a simple device the excitation of the motors is automatically increased during switching if one goes from a lower voltage to a higher one (starting) and at- automatically decreased when passing from a higher voltage to a lower one.
The attached drawing gives an explanatory example of the device; in the figure, for the sake of simplicity, all the organs and accessory devices which are independent of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
device in question. It is also assumed, for simplicity, that it is a question of adjusting a single motor M which is made to support for example four voltage jumps between the voltages: 0-125-250-357-500 at start-up, and conversely between the voltages : 500-375-250-125-0 when braking.
For this purpose, it is assumed that the brushes 0, 125, 275, 500 of drum 0 of the operation controller are permanently maintained at voltages 0, 136, 375, 600 and that the other brushes 1 and 8 of the same drum 0 represent the ends of the armature circuits of M, We will thus have five walking positions:
0 - the two armatures short-circuited
I - "" "supplied between 0 and 125
II - "" "" "125 and 376 III -" "" "" 0 and 376
IV "" "" 0 and 500
The armature circuit consists of the armature A, the series excitation s and the switching rheostat R whose connection and disconnection are automatically controlled by the differential relay I each time the controller goes from one position to the next. the next position.
The bypass excitation circuit is supplied permanently between 0 and 125, that is to say at a constant voltage and comprises the field coils in series with the field rheostat 2 which can be switched on. short circuit by the brushes 10, 11 which are supported on the drum c 'coaxial with 0. The drum 0 is set in motion (directly or indirectly) by the worker, while it is connected to the aid as the joint N through which c 'turns solidly with 0 Until, the rotation occurs in a determined direction, since the tooth 2 integral with c' presses constantly or against the wall x (starting) or against the wall - (braking) of the bell g integral with the drum 0.
As a result, the contacts on c 'are oriented differently from the contacts on as a result of the worker turning the drum in one direction or in the opposite direction.
-3-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
More precisely: if the worker turns 0 from left to right, that is to say if he goes from O to I, from r to II, etc., then 2 makes contact on x and the contacts on C 'remain oriented as shown in the drawing, so that the average line of full on C' coincides with the average line of vacuum on 0: if on the contrary, the rotation occurs in the opposite direction, then p takes, first, contact with, and the relative orientation of the contacts is such that the midline of the solid of the contacts of c and c 'coincides.
The first case corresponds to the starting maneuver and the figure shows that the shunt less excitation (r inserted) occurs when .Ç is fixed in one of the starting positions (CI-II-III-IV) and the excitement is more intense as one moves from one position to another. On starting, the motors are therefore overexcited when moving from one pad to another.
The second case corresponds to the braking maneuver. It must then be assumed that the contacts ae C 'are displaced to the left, with respect to the position indicated in the drawing, by the necessary proportion for the contacts of C' to come on the same mean line of the contacts of C. The pre-rotation minimum of 0 with respect to C ', because of the play in the joint N must obviously be equal to half the angular distance which passes between each position and the next position Under these conditions, the motor is overexcited while controlJ.er 0 remains in any of the on positions and de-energized while switching from one position to another.
As a result, the motors are de-energized before the main contacts are made and the counter-compound action exerted by the braking current occurs. A similar phenomenon occurs in the reverse starting maneuver in which they become, on the contrary
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
re, overexcited before the compound action exerted by the starting current occurs, after the main circuits have been closed.
The advantages which derive from this arrangement are the following: a) reduction of the current maxima since the closing of the main circuits, after each switching, is preceded by a state of overexcitation in the motors on starting and de-excitation on braking; b) reduction of the current to be interrupted, which is reduced not only because of the automatic introduction of R but also by said set of excitations; c) availability of greater excitation on braking compared to starting, which is perfectly rational, if we consider that during starting the excitation in series is added to that in shunt and that on the contrary during braking it is subtracted.
In the arrangement described, a differential relay operating at each passage of the controller from one position to another, controls the insertion and exclusion of the switching rheostats inserted in the armature circuits. The same result can be achieved by another preferable arrangement $ in which the control of said rheostats is directly controlled by the controller itself, with the aid of a device analogous to that which performs the insertion and short-circuiting of the field rheostat , so that any relay is removed-,
The accompanying drawing (fig. 2) shows schematically the circuits modified according to this arrangement, assuming a single motor and only three degrees of adjustment voltage, for example 125-375-500 Volts.
In this arrangement, all the positions corresponding to the running of the engine are split and respectively indicated at I-I ', 11-lite III-III', IV-IV '. The cylinder of
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The order has two differential gear joints. One of them M is used to establish a various offset (depending on whether the rotation of the cylinder is carried out in the direction of starting or in the direction of braking) between the position of the main contacts by cylinder 0, and that contacts carried by the cylinder c ', controlling the contacts 10-il for the insertion and the short-circuiting of the rheostat r of the field.
The other N performs a similar action with respect to the contacts of cylinder 0 "which makes the insertion and the short-circuiting of the rheostat R inserted in the armature circuit.
In this case, by the effect of the seal N, we have this that during start-up in all control positions I-I ', II-II' III-III ', IV-IV', the rheostat r is inserted, being short-circuited during the passages between I'-II, II'-III, III'-IV, during which the armature circuit is interrupted. During braking we have the opposite effect. For this, it suffices that the angle of the mad run of 0 with respect to c 'is equal to half of the angular interval existing between I-II, II-III, III-IV, as well as between l '-II', Ii'-III 'III'-IV'.
For the relative connection between C-C ', the arrangement es. arranged so that during starting., c 'is oriented with respect to c so that R is inserted in I-II-III-IV (position which is encountered first after each switching) during starting and that R is short-circuited in I'-Ii'-III'-IV '. During braking, on the other hand, R is inserted into l'-II'-III'-IV '(position which is encountered first during braking) and R is short-circuited in
I-II-III-IV.
In addition, both in the starting maneuver and in the braking maneuver, R must be inserted during the switching of the armature circuits.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
To achieve this result, it suffices that the mad run of C with respect to C 'corresponds to an angular rotation equaling the angle between the positions I-I', II-II ', III-III', IV-IV '.
For greater clarity, the positions of C "and 0" have been indicated by solid lines, with respect to 0 during start-up (right-hand rotation of 0) and by dotted lines those relating to braking (rotation to the left of C).
In order to maintain the stability of the orientation between the parts of the control cylinder, it is necessary that not only cylinder 0 is provided as usual with a serrated wheel (sensitivity wheel) in which a stopper engages. roller provided with a spring in correspondence of the exact positions of the controller, but similar arrangements should be adopted for c'-C "cylinders.
All the bumpers will be pivotable on the frame of the controller so that the resistance they present to said frame is greater than the resistance of the friction existing between C-C 'and 0-0 ".
Suppose the circumference is divided into 27 parts,
The wheel of 0 will only have the notches necessary to secure the positions OI-I'-II-II'-III-III'-IV-IV ', while each of the wheels of C' and ae 0 "has 27 notches. so that their orientation is always defined.
In the assumed case, the mad run at each Reversal of rotation of 0 is three steps for C 'and only two steps for C ".
With regard to operation, it suffices to note that both during starting and during braking, each voltage is applied to the armature, R being first inserted and then R being short-circuited. which has the effect of reducing current surges when passing from one applied voltage to the other @
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Naturally) this arrangement is applicable in the case where there are two or more motors coupled in series or in parallel;
the number of degrees of tension to be applied to the armatures of said motors may also vary, since this only necessitates modifying the number of contacts carried by cylinder C and the number of control positions, but not the structure and the relative orientation of the C'-C "cylinders, in which only the number of contacts should be increased correspondingly.
, Part of the resistors R can still be controlled by a relay acting before or after, while the other part will be controlled directly by the controller. If this relay must act in the first place to short-circuit the part of R which depends on it, the contacts which activate the differential relay must be fixed on cylinder c and be put into circuit either in positions I-. II-III-IV, or in positions 1'-II'-III'-IV '. If, on the contrary, this relay must then come into action, said contacts will be placed on C 'in a manner analogous to those which short-circuit the brushes 6-7 so that when starting up, the differential relay acts only in
EMI8.1
x-I-IIIt-1V! and when braking only in 1-11-111-IV.
Finally, it should be observed that a motor excited in series behaves exactly like a simple resistance. Consequently, the resistor R can even be totally or partially replaced by a motor excited in series; and able

to generate a suitable counter-electromotive force, wedged on the same shaft which carries the dynamotoric group functioning as a voltage divider and making available the three fundamental voltages 125-250-375. This motor will be inserted into the circuit in the precise place which is occupied by the part of the resistor R which is replaced by said motor.
In this case, the power absorbed by said motor is not completely dissipated in the form of heat;
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
on the contrary, it is regenerated and returned to the circuit through the dynamotor group operating as a voltage divider, to which this auxiliary motor is mechanically connected since it is wedged on the same shaft.
