<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

PATENT OF INVENTION "IMPROVEMENTS IN THE PREPARATION OF BODIES WHOSE FORMATION RESULTS FROM THE PERFORMANCE OF STRONG ENDOTHERMAL REACTIONS, SUCH AS NITROGEN OOMPOSES"
The invention relates to the preparation of bodies whose formation results from the completion of reactions - and for example of strongly endothermic combinations.
It concerned more especially, but not exclusively, the production of nitrogenous compounds and reaction bodies of similar formation,
Its main purpose is to achieve this preparation in a way that is simpler and more advantageous than until now.
Blle consists, in its most general form, in introducing into an externally heated enclosure, the or some of the reagents suitable for giving, by a strong endothermic combination, the desired body or bodies, and to blackout or introduce into it. enclosure an element compatible .with the reaction (s), or one or more reagents of the reaction (s).
preferably gaseous, superheated to a temperature at least equal to that necessary for the formation of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
or combinations *
It will be understood that the greater the excess temperature of introduction into the enclosure over that necessary for the formation of the combination (s), the more rapidly the latter will form; and, if the element is not a reactant of the reaction (s), less should be the amount used of the element.
It is therefore advantageous on the one hand to bring a temperature as high as possible to the element or the reagent to be overheated, and on the other hand to avoid any loss of calories during the journey of the space or overheating chamber to voices or listens to reactions *
Industrially, economical superheating can only be achieved by intimate contact of the element or reagent to be overheated and of a heating body having a highly developed surface, as is the case in particular of an igniting mass.
According to the invention, the element or the reagent is overheated by making it pass through a massa en igaition.
And to avoid any loss of heat once the element or the reagent is overheated, arrangements are made to place the reaction chamber in the vicinity as immediate as possible, 'or better even within the source of overheating.
Among the masses in ignition, the use of which offers the most interest - in that this ignition is maintained for a purpose different from the heating proper, with abandonment of a considerable portion of sensible heat - we will preferably choose the incandescent mass of a gasifier.
The process therefore consists in introducing the or some of the reagents, suitable for giving the desired combination or combinations, into an enclosure immersed in an incandescent mass - such as the combustible mass of a gasifier - and in circulating or introducing into this enclosure an element, and, or one or more
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
reagent has, immediately after overheating, carried out by passing through this incandescent mass.
And when it comes in particular to certain nitrogenous compounds - such as sodium cyanide, cyanmide, aluminum azide, and others - for the formation of which the reaction nitrogen is chosen as the superheated element , the process consists, the other reactants of the bodies to be formed being introduced into an enclosure immersed in the incandescent fuel mass of a gasifier, in heating this fuel mass by the injection of air for a suitable period of time, in stopping - stop the blowing and then pass, in the glowing mass, a certain quantity of nitrogen, introduced into the central enoein as it overheats.
Conducted as above, the process of formation of the bodies considered is intermittent, but it goes without saying that we could condition the gasifier - and for example divide it into a certain number of sectors, some of which would be heating up while d 'others would be crossed by the nitrogen to be superheated -, in order to make continuous the development, of the nitrogenous wedges.
Apart from the method which has just been defined, the invention also comprises the appropriate apparatus to allow its execution, of which, at the same time as the other peculiarities of the method, the details of establishment will emerge more completely from the complement of description below, with reference to the attached drawing
As it is said, assuming that one wishes to prepare certain products of strongly endothermic combinations, such as nitrogen compounds, and for example sodium cyanide, oyanamide or even aluminum azide, by the process da invention, we establish a gasifier opening 1, in the center of which is arranged a retort 2 ending in a lower frustoconical part 3.
The retort has an upper extension 21, at
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
above the top of the gasifier, and its top is lined with a loading device 5 and a. rotary distributor 6.
Loading devices 4 are provided around the perimeter of the opening 1, in which a grid is fitted.
10.
Under this grid opens a blowing air duct.
As a replacement for duct 9, a crown of nozzles could be arranged around the perimeter of tank 1.
Under the base of the conical part 3 of the retort 2, a crusher system formed of two rotating cylinders 7, fitted with teeth, as well as an evacuation system, such as a screw conveyor 8, is mounted in order to crush the products formed and at the same time allow the advancement of materials *
The crusher system 7 and evacuation 8 is enclosed in a double jacket 12 comprising a valve nozzle
13, and the internal space 14 is extended by rings 15, formed in the wall of the retort, to finally emerge under the grid 10 of the gasifier through a series of orifioes 16.
In the part of the wall of the retort located between the grid 10 and the top of the gasifier, vertical rings, such as 17, are provided, distributed over the entire perimeter and communicating through oblique passages, upper 18 with the opening of the gasifier, and lower 19 aveo the internal space of the oornue. At the top, the oarneaux 17 are closed by inspection plugs 20, with hermetic closure.
The gas chamber of the gasifier is in communication with the outside via a pipe 21, comprising a valve or valve 22, and a pipe 23 for use which can be connected to the inlet of a heat exchanger (not shown). ..
On the other hand, the upper space of the retort 2 has an outlet duct 25, provided with a valve such as 26, the duct 27 following it being able to be connected to the aforementioned heat exchanger.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Suitable pipes will be established to send the hot air produced by the exchanger, on the one hand to pipe 9 and on the other hand to pipe 13.
The ohoses being thus arranged, and judiciously proprotées, proposing for example to manufacture sodium ooyanu, assuming the gasifier ignited and the retort
2 itself loaded with sodium carbonate and carbon in suitable proportions, conduct the operation as follows and
We close the valve 26 and we open the valve or valve
22, at the same time that lion injects the wind through duct 9 and, if desired, also through orifices 16,
The gasifier gas formed passes, through the valve 22 and the conduit 23, either to user devices or to the exchanger if it is provided.
When the combustible mass of the gasifier has been brought to its maximum temperature, the wind is stopped, the valve is closed
22, the valve 26 is opened and nitrogen from any source of formation is injected through the conduit 13 and the orifices 16.
Nitrogen passes into space 14 of the double jacket
12 .. and the rings 15, where it heats up while cooling: the oonoasseur and evacuation system, for its overheating, passes through the incandescent mass of the gasifier, takes the passages 18, the rings 17 and the passages. 19, passing in the immediate vicinity of the hottest zones of the gasifier, to enter the retort 2.
The superheated nitrogen passes through the retort load from bottom to top, determining the formation of the nitrogen combination.
The excess nitrogen, along with carbon monoxide, formed during the reaction passes through line 25 and can serve other purposes or be reused. In his passage to. - through the cold loaded materials occupying the extension
1
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
21, retort, this excess gives up its sensible calories and. evacuation occurs at a temperature of the order of 100 to 150 C.
When the temperature of the superheated nitrogen reaches the lower limit admissible for carrying out the reactions, the previous maneuvers are reversed and the air blowing phase is recommenced.
Under these conditions the process is discontinuous, but one could if one wishes it to make it continuous as it was indicated by dividing into sectors the space of the exogenous one, certain sectors being in heating while others are used for the overheating of the. nitrogen.
The nitrogen combination, and in this case the sodium oyanu, cooled in the lower part of the oornue, by the passage of the heating nitrogen in the kernels 15, is divided by the crushing cylinders 7 and evacuated by the screw conveyor 8.
It will be noted that the upper part of the oornue 2 advantageously serves as a preliminary distillation chamber for the carbon mixed with the sodium carbonate, giving the descent a very porous semi-ooke, well suited to the formation of cyanide. The excess nitrogen and carbon monoxide then entrains the distilled tar outside in this first heating phase, ie around 450-500.
From the point of view of the thermal balance of the operation, given the very high temperature possessed by the nitrogen entering the reaction (temperature of the order of 1500) the quantity of nitrogen required will only be very little greater than the quantity theoretical. It follows, all things equal. a relatively small expenditure of heating coke $ this expenditure being found moreover in the gasifier gases formed, entirely disposable
It will also be noted that. following the training reaction:
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Co3Na2 + 4C + N2 = 2NaCN + 3CO one can, easily recover, in the nitrogen excess, the carbon monoxide formed by reaction, which makes the result of the calorific equation positive.
As goes without saying, and as has already been suggested, it is understood that the invention is in no way limited to the application and to the apparatus more especially deoriteet shown, but that it also encompasses the variations and modifications.
