<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
REVENDICATIONS.

Improvements to machines used to make nails.
The present invention relates to machines for making alous, and more particularly to machines suitable for making nails which have a reduced front end, but which do not end in a pointed end.
The object of the invention is to obtain a machine for making nails, comprising a mechanism suitable for giving the front end or point of the nail the shape of a point with a blunt end, preferably with three faces. , and in which the different nail manufacturing operations are coordinated and synchronized from a common control device.
Machines heretofore employed for making nails have been provided with a device for simultaneously forming the point and cutting the nail. This device generally comprises two knives, which form four faces arranged symmetrically.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in the form of a pyramid with four faces on the point of the nail, the faces generally decreasing in width so as to cut each other along a pointed end relatively seaweed. The bowls, into which such nails are driven, frequently split along the grain, for no matter how the pointed end is placed in relation to the wood grain, it always acts as 'a corner.
The present invention provides a machine for producing nails having a specially shaped tip, by which this tendency is practically eliminated. The nail point forming mechanism in the machine according to the invention comprises an odd number of punching punches or knives, which are operated simultaneously to produce a point having an odd number of faces, which go preferably by decreasing in width so as to. form a rather blunt point. In its preferred form, the tip thus produced can be regarded as a truncated triangular pyramid.
Such a nail, when driven into the wood, has a less tendency to split the wood grain, because the faces of the point cut a chenin in the wood and the point itself, being blunt and incapable to produce a true wedge effect, exerts a punching action on the fibers, instead of the wedging and separating action produced by earlier forms of nails.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a nail making machine constructed in accordance with the invention; FIG. 2 is a plan view of the machine shown in FIG. 1; freezes them *
3 and 4 are end elevational views of the machine, viewed respectively from the side corresponding to the control of the

knives and the side corresponding to. feeding the metal wire; Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken along the line v-v of Fig. 2, showing the mechanism for forming the tip of the nail; figs. b to 8 are views showing the punches to be stamped;
figs.9 to 11 are views showing a knife; Fig. 12 is an enlarged-scale view, partially in section, of the wire advance adjustment mechanism; and pin 13 is a view of a nail formed in accordance with. invention.
With reference to the drawings, the machine comprises a frame generally designated by the reference numeral 1, comprising end pieces 2 and 3, in which are journaled in suitable bearings three parallel shafts 4, 5 and 6 which are preferably opposed. at 120 degree intervals around a central point. so as to be equidistant from this point and also from each other. This arrangement is more particularly visible on fig 5.
The rotational movement of the shafts and the control of the nail-forming mechanism, which will be described below, are carried out by means of a common control, which comprises a crank shaft 7 (fig. 2) which is supported transversely. - 'dirt in appropriate bearings 8 and which extends on one side of the frame to receive a flywheel 9 as well as fixed and idle pulleys 10 and 11 respectively. The crankshaft '1 carries two helical wheels 12 and 13. (figs.
2 and 3) which mesh with similar helical wheels 14 and? 15, respectively, mounted transversely to the first on shafts 4 and 5. A straight toothed wheel 16, mounted on the end of the shaft 5, meshes with a straight idler toothed wheel 17, which is carried by a shaft end 18 and which in turn meshes with another straight toothed wheel 19 mounted on shaft 6. Shafts 4, 5 and 6 are thus actuated simultaneously / by the rotational movement of the crankshaft7, the wheels: toothed
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
being such that the three shafts 4, 5 and 6 turn at a substantially equal speed * Preferably, all these toothed wheels are provided with involute toothing.
A metal wire straightening device, generally designated by the reference 20 (fig. 2), fixed to the end piece 3, passes the metal wire to a matrix serving to form the head of the nail, mounted in a support block; the entire device is generally designated by 21 (fig. 2) and since this is an exterior plan view of the assembly, the material is not shown. The metal wire advances intermittently towards the die under the action of an advancing mechanism which includes a feed rod 22, disposed in an adjustable position at one end in a stirrup piece 23. and in an end cap 24 to the other (figs, 2 and 12).
An advance disc 25, carried by the crankshaft 7, has a T-section groove 26, in which a pin 27, passing through the end yoke 24, is placed in an eccentrically adjustable position. , to vary the stroke communicated to the feed rod 22. The caliper 23 is connected to a feed lever 28, pivoted at $ 29 which cooperates with the straightening device to advance the metal wire to to the anvil-forming die, when the lever oscillates around its pivot as a result of the alternating movement of the feed rod 22 during the rotational movement of the crankshaft 7.
A hammer 30 (fig. 2), mounted opposite the die serving to form the head of the nail, is carried by a plunger 31, mounted on a connecting rod 32, which is imperatively connected to the crank shaft 7 During the rotational movement of the crank shaft, the hammer 30 receives a reciprocating movement to form a clue head on the end of the passed metal wire.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
through the matrix.
The main role of shafts 4, 5 and 6 is to actuate the mechanism for forming the point of the nail; for this purpose, these shafts comprise fixed eccentrics or cams 33, 34 and 35, respectively, which are surrounded by eccentric collars 30 37 and 38 (Figs. 2 and 5). , 40 and 41 are hinged to. these eccentric collars and are mounted in front of the matrix serving to form the têta of the nail, to receive a reciprocating movement on guide blocks or slides 42, supported by the frame.
The punch holders, the eccentric collars and the eccentrics are all similar and, it will be noted that, like the shafts which actuate them, they are grouped around a common point and, in the embodiment shown. - felt, they move in the same vertical plane.
The punch holders are clearly shown in Fig. 5. The lower or protruding end of each has a dovetail groove 43 and at a point midway along the length of each punch holder is formed a boss 44. In the aeux grooves of the punch holders are placed stamping punches 45, chamfered on the side at 46, so as to adapt to the shape of the tail grooves 43, and pointed at one end, preferably as shown in Figs. 6 to 8. The third punch to. die 47 preferably comprises a cutter and is disposed in the third punch holder.
This punch (figs * 9 to 11) is substantially similar to the matrioer punches 45, but it is hollowed out and threaded from the rear, in 48, and a dovetail groove 49 is then cut in this punch for receiving a knife 50, which is held in this groove and which is adjustable in position in the longitudinal direction thereof by means of a locking screw 51. A fastening bolt
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
52 is preferably provided for each of the punches. The position of the punches can be adjusted in the longitudinal direction by means of screws 53 passing through the bosses and bearing against the rear of the points, and these screws 53 are held in place. in a fixed position by locking screws 54.
As shafts 4, 5 and 6 are driven at the same speed, this will result in a synchronous radial reciprocating motion of the punch holders, which is the axis of the wire which is to be shaped and made into nails. The position of the punches in their holders is adjusted so that they meet the wire at about the same time. The position of the knife 50 is also adjusted so that it cuts the wire at the proper time.
The operation of the machine is as follows:
The rotational movement of the shaft 7 produces a simultaneous rotational movement of the shafts 4, 5 and 6 in the manner previously explained, and at the same time actuates the mechanism for advancing the metal wire through the rod. feed 22. The die for forming the nail head is of the standard type, and clamps the wire 55 during the head forming operation and then releases it to allow it to advance. This operation is obtained by means of an angled lever 56 (fig. 4), which is pivoted at 57 and which comprises an arm 58, carrying a roller 59 which rolls on a cam 60, mounted on the shaft 6 (as shown on the pins * 1 and 4).
The other arm 61 of the angled lever 56 carries an adjustable position screw 62, which, when the angled lever 55 receives an oscillating movement as a result of the rotational movement of the cam, actuates the mechanism cooperating with the die. formation of the head of the nail, so as to produce alternately
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
tightening and loosening this die, in the usual way, as any man of the metiar will easily understand.
Assuming that the nail head forming die has gripped the wire 55, the hammer 30, which has been advanced by the connecting rod 32 strikes and crushes the protruding end of this wire, thereby forming the head of the wire. nail The movers are coordinated in such a way that when the head of the nail has been formed, the die releases the metal wire, the hammer 30 is brought back, and at the same time the feed lever 28 oscillates so as to make pass the wire through the dressing rollers and the die, the stroke being adjusted so that it extends the entire length of the nail beyond the die, the stroke of this feed lever
28 is adjustable to allow the length of the nails to be varied as desired.
meanwhile the rotational movement of shafts 4, 5 and 6 has advanced the pole holders, and when the wire has been drawn to the proper length the punches continue to move towards the pole. inside until the end of their race. The knife 50 is arranged so as to cut the metal wire just before the die-forging punch, which carries this knife, comes into contact with the metal wire, and the position of all the die-forging punches is also adjusted so that they simultaneously come into engagement with the metal wire thus cut, so as to crush the cut end and to shape the point.
This adjustment of the position of the punches to be die-stamped is such that their complete advancement movement is limited so as to bring them into positions located on this side of the longitudinal axis of the metal wire, so that their advancement movement is insufficient. to give the blunt tip a pointed shape.
After the stamping punches have formed the egg-laying, they
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
move back, and the hammer moves forward again, and the cycle of operations repeats.
Fig. 13 shows a nail produced in accordance with the invention. The head and shank of the nail have the usual shape, but the point has three faces f, decreasing in width towards the front and cut so as to form an end face substantially normal to the axis of the nail. , as shown As the points to be die-stamped are arranged at an angle to each other, and since no two of them are in alignment, the faces of the point nail do not constitute a true wedge in any direction.
The invention therefore makes it possible to obtain a machine a. making nails, which comprises an odd number of die-forging punches arranged to form a nail point, of decreasing cross section without producing a sharp end and which exerts a relatively small wedge action when the nail is stuck in wood. The construction of the machine is simple, and the necessary synchronism of operations, and especially of the die-forging punches, is ensured in the preferred embodiment as shown and described. Furthermore, the position of the die-forging punches can be easily adjusted to achieve the exact necessary coordination between them.
The invention is not limited to the manufacture of nails having the particular shape described, since it allows nails to be produced having points having other shapes that are not sharp or do not give rise to wedge action and for this purpose it is possible to make modifications to the machine described and shown without departing from the principle of the invention. The nails produced by the machine according to the embodiment shown and
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
described generally have a small ope- rating depression at the end of the point, owing to the fact that the pressure of the punched die causes some of the metal of the wire to flow in the direction of the end. cut tee,
without, however, appreciably affecting the shape of the truncated triangular pyramid of the tip. Although this cup-like depression is not a characteristic of the tip, there is reason to suppose that its presence aids in the action of punching, previously mentioned, exerted by the tip of the nail.
