<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

used with a razor, which roller avoids the use of leathers and other instruments intended for ironing.
Another of the aims pursued by the inventor is to produce a compact and simple razor in its construction, which can be easily cleaned, without having to move the blade, and which can be instantly transformed into a sharpening device.
The other characteristics of the invention are given by the construction details described below, and shown in the accompanying drawings, where:

the palm of the hand.
Fig. 7 shows a sectional view of another (alternative) embodiment of the abrasive sharpening roller, and its axis.
In these figures:
1 indicates the central frame of the handle, comprising at its internal end a head 1a, 2 shows a cap screwed onto the external end of the frame of the handle, and intended to hold a cylindrical effluent 3 , thus blocked between the head and the hat. The head 1a has a flat surface, at its end, where a short threaded rod 4 is placed, by which the handle is rigidly fixed to the base 5 of a spring-loaded metal frame. This base is disposed transversely to the handle, and its opposite ends are laterally curved, in order to form the cheeks 6, between which the blade, the guard and the sharpening roller are mounted in the manner which will be described.
The blade 13, consisting of a thin piece of metal, sharpened on one side, is placed on a flat piece 14, which is referred to hereinafter as the marl holder, and provided with pins 15 and 15 'at its ends, by means of which it is capable of rotating between the cheeks of the frame. The blade has at its ends notches arranged so as to correspond to the lugs or buttons 17 and 18, screwed into the blade holder. and protruding from its surface, at its opposite ends. A clamping plate 19, made of a metal strip folded back longitudinally, receives the back of the blade and of the blade holder, with a view to securing them firmly.
The part 19 also includes notches, intended to receive the lugs, and its elastic
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tee keeps it in good place.
The blade is retained in the cutting position by a guard and locking plate 7, hereinafter referred to as the guard. This guard, as shown in FIG. 5, consists of a sheet of metal, comprising at its opposite ends arms 8 and 8 ', between which another arm or push-button 10 is provided. It pivots in the cheeks of the frame. means of the pins 80, formed in the edges of the arms 8 and 8 ', at their end. At its free edge, the guard is curved, and comprises teeth or crenellations of suitable shape, adjacent to the edge of the blade, and intended to protect the face against possible cuts.
The ends of the arms supporting the pins 80 are bent at 9 and 9 ', in order to be able to bear on the base 5 of the frame, while being capable of oscillating on either side of a neutral middle position, relative to the pivot points of the guard ,, in order to allow the latter, although attached to the frame, to be held against the blade, or on the contrary released from it.
10
The pusher / guard is curved on the handle, and rests in its low position against the edge of the base 5 of the frame. It acts as a lock, by means of which the guard can be rotated around its pivots, in order to approach or separate it from the blade holder, at the same time as it helps edges 9 and 9 of the blade holder. guard to retain it in the cutting position, as @ it serves to keep the guard away from the blade when sharpening. The lock). pusher 10 moves in a circle around axes 80.
It is elastic, and its curvature is such, with respect to the base 5 of the frame, that when the guard is brought to the position indicated in dotted lines at
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
figure 2 its lower portion hangs on the base
5 of the frame, in order to keep the guard out of the path of the blade during sharpening. The locking of the guard in the cutting position is, 4 'on the other hand ensured by the angled end 18' of the lug 18, arranged for / to correspond to a keeper 12, provided in the arm
8 of the guard, as shown in fig. 2.
The means used to allow the sharpening of the blade, and adapted to the razor, are first of all a sharpening roller o, freely mounted on an axis 21, which can rotate between the cheeks of the frame on which he is wearing. This axis is parallel to the pivot axis of the blade holder. The axis 21 is connected to the blade holder 14 by means of a gear train comprising a toothed wheel 16, fixed to one of the pivots of the blade holder, a toothed wheel 22 fixed to one of the ends of the axis 21, and a toothed intermediate pinion 23, mounted on a pin secured to one of the cheeks of the frame.
The alternative shown in FIG. 7 comprises an abrasive roller having a conical opening at one of its ends. This roller is made up of alternating sections 30 and 31, diagonally, or spirally, sections 31 being of leather, or other abrasive material, and sections 30 of aluminum, or other suitable material, and having a larger diameter. weak than that of sections 31.
The roller is capable of rotating on an axis, preferably comprising two parts 25 and 26, the part 25 being preferably conical, in order to correspond to the taper of the roller. The two parts are assembled in friction by means of the end piece 27 and a spring or other elastic member
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
tends to separate them. The conical part of the axle being forced into the conical part of the roller, a constant friction is achieved between the roller and the axle * This construction also facilitates the change and the positioning of the roller in the frame, in pressing the two ends of its axis against each other until it is free from the cheeks of the frame 6.
Assuming that the various organs are established as described above, and arranged for cutting, as indicated in f ig. 1 and 2 the mode of use of the razor forming the subject of the invention will be as follows:
To sharpen the blade in the razor, the guard 7 is released from the blade holder by acting on the push-lock 10, thus bringing the guard to the position indicated in dotted lines in fig. 2; the blade and its support are thus released, and can rotate.
The guard is kept in its released position by the pressure of the pusher on the base 5 of the frame
When the blade holder is thus released from the guard, the opposite faces of the cutting edge of the blade can alternately be brought into contact with the abrasive roller, as indicated by the dotted circle in fig. , corresponding to the path of the blade. The sharpening roller is rotated by frictionally back and forth on the palm of the hand, or other smooth surface, such as a book or table.
The friction between the roller and its axis results in the rotation of the axis with the roller, which is transmitted to the toothed wheels 22 16 and 23 causing the rotation of the blade in the same direction as the roller, until 'so that the edge of it comes in contact with the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
roller, at which instant the gears ceased to turn.
However, the roller continues to rotate, as long as the razor is rolled on the flat surface used, and the friction between the roller and its axis holds the blade against this roller, the pressure with which it rests therein increasing or decreasing with the pressure of the hand on the razor.
If the direction of rotation of the roller is changed, the direction of rotation of the gears is reversed, and the same sharpening operation takes place, but on the opposite side of the cutting edge of the blade.
For cutting, the guard 7 is brought forward, by acting on the push latch 10, and the blade is turned until the lug 18 comes into contact with the guard. At this moment the bent part of the lug engages in the keeper 12 of the guard *
The resiliency of push latch 10 holds the guard against the lug, which in turn presses the blade against the top of the guard. The hook of the lug 18 prevents the blade from being released from the guard, and the curvatures; 9 and 9 'of the arms 8 and 8' also hold the guard in place, by pressing, against the base 5 of the frame.
It is understood that the present device can be used as a sharpener, applied to different types of blades, other than that belonging to the present razor.
It will suffice to move the lugs 17 and 18, on the blade holder 14. If it is desired to use this device only for sharpening the blades, and not for shaving, guard 7 will be removed, freeing it from the cheeks. of the frame.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
If it is desired to pass the blade over the stone to be sharpened, the axis 21 will be released from the frame, and the roller 20 will then be released from its axis. The sharpening stone, the dimensions of which are identical to those of the roller, is in turn mounted on the axis 21 while the roller replaces it on the handle. The axis 21 is then reassembled on the frame, and the device is able to operate again, as before.
It is obvious that the various members of the razor described can vary in their shape or in their construction, without going beyond the scope of the present invention.
