<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

"APPARATUS FOR ADJUSTING THE VITRSSR OF THE CONTINUOUS FIRE OF MACHINE GUNS OPERATING BY TAKING GAS AND OTHERS"
The object of the present invention is a regulator of the firing speed for automatic firearms, particularly machine guns of all types, -regulator essentially comprising a delay device or member, - constituted for example by a piston-valve, - adjustable from the outside, influencing a trigger mechanism acting on the trigger or the like of the weapon.
In accordance with the present invention, the retarder member
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
is combined with the separator mechanism, and is adjustable from the outside of beers such that, on the one hand, the operation of the entire apparatus is made entirely certain and strictly precise, and this regardless of the viscosity state of the fluid o content in the apparatus, varying with the atmospheric temperature, and that, on the other hand, the force required to actuate the apparatus is considerably reduced, thus completely eliminating the serious disadvantages of the known regulators of the species.
The embodiments of the object of the present invention which are described below and are represented in the appended drawings are: on the one hand an adaptation of said cojet and a Hotohkiss machine gun, and on the other hand an adaptation of the machine gun. said object to a Maxim machine gun, but it is obvious that the regulator which is the actual object of the present invention can be adapted just as well to other types of machine guns, such as for example "Vickers", "Fiat", "Schwarzolse ", Browning :, without departing from the essential characteristics of the present patent.
These characteristics are as follows: a) The deolancheur member is made independent of the retarder valve piston, in the sense that the latter is only hooked to the first, only at the start of the return stroke of the trigger, and this over a length constant of this travel at an adjustable speed, this adjustment being obtained by acting on the valve of said piston. b) Realization of the retarder device, that is to say in the example described and shown, of the cylinder of the retarder valve piston, near the deolanoheur mechanism, called the trigger member, and momentary attachment of the latter to the said valve piston by through a U-shaped lever.
c) A corrective device combined with the thumbwheel through which the valve of the retarder piston is acted on, this device making it possible to correct the distance
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
initial between said valve and its seat on said piston, corresponding to variations in the viscosity of the fluid or the like contained in the cylinder of the regulator, variations depending on the ambient temperature. d) Realization of the ironing valve piston adjustable by the triple concentricity of the 3 rods (valve, piston and control), the rotation of the piston rod being hampered by a forked branch of the lever in conjunction with it.
The advantages obtained by the new characteristic a) (independence of the 2 components), reside above all: a ') in a reduction to the minimum of the force necessary for the arming, by the elimination of the resistance to the instantaneous displacement of the retarder piston in oil. a ") in an increase in the useful effect of the trigger which, being no longer integral with the valve piston, performs its action freely at accelerated speed.
The advantages obtained with the new feature b) (U-lever) reside above all in the elimination of the noises and other disadvantages in the operation of the regulator, caused otherwise by the fact that the same rod of the delay valve piston must pass. through a stuffing box.
The advantage obtained by the new characteristic c) (said to be corrector) lies in the fact that the initial angular position of the said wheel makes it possible to obtain substantially the same range of rates whatever the ambient temperature with which the viscosity of the oil or the like contained in the bait there.
The advantages obtained by the new feature d) (valve piston with 3 concentric rods) reside in that, when it exerts its retarding action, it is only subjected to the difference in the forces of the trigger spring and the counter spring. reminder which by reducing the oil pressure facilitates the adjustment by the valve, and allows a seal
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
less easier to obtain moreover thanks to the elimination of the usual shim and groove.
Other characteristics of the subject of the present invention will emerge from the description and the claims below.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, two sodas for achieving the subject of the present patent,

Finally, the disc 43 is provided on its visible circular face with an appropriate graduation, such as for example from 1 to 12,

It is the same for the variations in viscosities from + 10 up to for example 40, between which the viscosity of the oil varies according to a
EMI10.5
strongly o01sante scale and it is for this purpose that the rim 46- of the disc has stepped shoulders I, 3, to .156 namely:
to shoot at a temperature of about -10 with a speed of for example 5 rounds per minute we will first place the disc

EMI10.7
speed of 400 blows to the ninute, we only have to turn 1- 'together 35,43,43' until the index 5Q appears opposite the number 12 of the graduation, the shoulders m to 156 does not intervene in this case, since the corresponding hole 1

at -10 and of a depth limited to such a point, that the ergot
47 which engages in it maintains the opener 43,43 'in a position:
bn sufficiently removed on the thumbwheel 35.
It is exactly the same for the temperatures of about 0 the only difference residing in this case in the fact, that the pin 47 is placed in the hole 151 corresponding to
0 hence the minimum distance between the valve! and its seat on the piston 3, is reduced by an appropriate value.
If it is a question of firing at a temperature for example of around + 30d, the cuvette 43 ', 43 is first placed with its pin 47 in the hole 151 corresponding to +30, this hole having dant a depth such that it is the shoulder 154 which will limit the rotary displacement of the assembly 35,43,43 'in one direction, by making contact with the stop 158. Thus all the aforementioned range of speeds is obtained in this case by turning the assembly 35,43,43 'so that the index 50 passes successively from the ohdigers I to 8.5 of the graduation of the disc 43.
In this case, to obtain the desired number of strokes quickly and axaote, use a small double entry panel fixed in a visible place of the regulator. An example of such a table is shown in Figure 10b.
According to this table, if you want to shoot at a temperature of about + 30 with a speed of 60 strokes per minute, the index 50 must be located opposite the 3.75 division of the scale, And so on. It is easy to see that the adjustment manipulations for temperatures of about +40, + 20 or + IO will be carried out in a similar manner.
It is obvious that by using other qualities of oils, we will arrive at the different temperatures given to other distributions of the numbers of strokes per minute, in relation to the graduation of the disc 43,43 '. In these cases the double entry table will be set up for example as shown in figure IOb.

It is obvious that the subject of the present patent lends itself to a large number of variant embodiments, without departing from the subject itself of the present patent.
Thus for example, stuck shown in Figure 5, the length of the adjustment period or delay instead of é-

According to Figure 5, the rod 52 of the piston 3. etts full.
In the right extract fig. 5 of the rod 52 is screwed in an adjustable manner once and for all the short rod 53 provided with the annular shoulder 28 and supporting the valve 4, while

<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
It is obvious that to increase the duration of the delay stroke of the piston .1 in the system fig.5 it will suffice to turn the wheel 35 in the opposite direction to the previous one.
In the examples described above, the inner face of cylinder 2 is provided, on the side of piston 3., with acceleration cavities: - ration 5 .. However, according to the present patent, these cavities 5 are not essential. They can be completely eliminated, and in this case the release of the valve piston 3,4, from the trigger member 7,10,36 will take place at the desired moment, only by virtue of the angular displacement of the lever 16,15,17 in the form of a. U, in the direction of the arrow z.
With regard to the adaptation of the regulator device to Maxim type machine guns, adaptation shown in Figures II to 17, it should first be noted that the delay valve piston and the trigger device itself are designed there, arranged and influence each other exactly as described above in relation to a Hotchkiss machine gun.
This is why, in Figures II, 12,13, all the organs identical or similar to those shown and described above, compared to Figures 1 to 10, have been designated by the same reference numbers and are clearly explained of the above. , without needing to be described again
The only differences between the adaptation of the regulator to a Maxim machine gun and its adaptation to a Hotchkiss lie in the following:
The tubular member 29 instead of being controlled directly by the adjustment wheel 35 with its correcting device 40, etc., is fitted with a pinion 100 meshing with a pinion
101 wedged on a shaft 102 on which is also fixed the wheel 35 with its said correcting device.
The trigger member 7 is controlled by the receding argan of the machine gun in the example shown in FIG. II, by the flange 103 by means of an arming lever.

3., and will remain maintained in its raised position, by the spring 148.
As an antiphon above the lever 110 acts on the trigger bar of the machine gun. Now, in accordance with the present invention, this trigger bar is, so to speak, subdivided into two parts, one of which constitutes a trigger bar.
124, which can be actuated from the outside in the usual manner, while the other constitutes an auxiliary expansion bar 125 which is actuated only by the regulator via said lever 110, and this d 'a so-called independent way of the trigger bar 124.
Thanks to this arrangement, the work required of the regulator to move the trigger bar is considerably reduced, since instead of having to move the main trigger bar 124 with the actuators connected to it and compress the trigger spring. relatively strong recall 126 of this control device, the regulator only has to move the auxiliary expansion bar 125, which is a very easy movement member, namely:
referring to Figures 14 and 15, the main trigger bar 124 perforated at 127, 128 and 12g has, - with the exception of its front end ne?, ... a section in the tail of aron ' - of, which ends at the front with the shoulders 131 formed by its said front end 131, which is a little wider.
