<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The Company known as Crankless Engines Limited, in Melbourne, State of Victoria

Internal combustion engine .
The present invention relates to improvements in the construction, arrangement and operation of reciprocating motors, of the type in which the pistons move in lines parallel to the axis of the motor shaft. being referred to hereafter, for the sake of brevity, under the name of crankless motors. The object of the invention is to provide an engine of this type having greater flexibility, and to allow better and more efficient control methods (methods which also form part of the present invention) than internal combustion or internal combustion engines. currently known.
The term "high flexibility" means that the engine is capable of operating at any given speed, with a higher degree of rotational torque, and therefore energy, without limitations from faulty ignition or fuel.

tion of combustiwfc. It is a well-known defect of presently existing internal combustion and explosion engines, that the degree of torque which they are capable of exerting to a minimum.

given speed is comparatively low. For this reason, a variable transmission mechanism is usually combined with these motors, making it possible to increase or decrease the torque applied to the driven shaft independently of that exerted by the motor.
It is one of the aims of the present invention to eliminate, entirely or partially, this transmission mechanism. In particular, the improvements made to the construction and to the operation are intended to be applied to machines. internal combustion and explosion engines of the crankless type, for the propulsion of land vehicles. there opened the locomotives for railways, with the aim of giving to these engines the characteristic of flexibility which makes it possible to employ steam engines for these uses, without the addition of a gear change mechanism or any other variable transmission device.

by a polyeylindrical mutor, representing one of the cylinder units embodying a practical example of the invention.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, the latter is shown applied to a crankless motor of the type described in Belgian patent 278028. For the description of the mechanism of this motor, and for the definition of the terms used below in For the description of this mechanism, reference will be made to the aforementioned patent. the engine comprises one or more internal combustion cylinders 1, which work according to one or other of the known cycles of internal combustion or explosion, either according to the four-stroke cycle or according to the two-stroke cycle. when several cylinders are arranged around the main shaft, the construction can match that described in the aforementioned patent.
As in all engines of this kind, the essential operations consist in that the working fluid is compressed during the upstroke of the piston 2, with a pressure rise depending on the ratio between the volume of the dead space 3 and the volume swept by the pistun. The fuel is either introduced before the compression or injected after the compression.

The maximum amount of driving force that can be developed with each engine stroke depends on the amount of compaction.

bustible that can be burnt in 1 ecylindr; and this, in turn, depends directly on the mass of air available for its combustion, i.e. the mass of air which is in the dead space 3 at the end of the combustion. compression stroke. Since the compression pressure is limited by practical considerations, this mass is, in practice, approximately proportional to the volume of the compression space.
In internal combustion and internal combustion engines, as they are generally constructed, the volume of the compression space is fixed. However, there are already known constructions in which the volume of the compression space is variable. The present invention consists of means for producing this variation in volume in an engine without cranks, and it also comprises means for varying the quantity of air supplied to said kind of compression.
The main shaft 4 of the engine, on which the inclined plane 5 is mounted, is supported in bearings 6,7 and its longitudinal position is determined by the thrust bearing 8. The piston 2 of the engine is rigidly connected, by means of the part 9, to a piston 10, so that the two pistons are driven in a simultaneous reciprocating movement, as the inclined plane 5 rotates. The piston 10 'moving in the cylinder 11 is used to supply the air used for the combustion of the engine cylinder, by the intermediary of passages or pipes not shown in the drawing.
Valves 11a are provided in the head 12 of the cylinder, for the purpose of admitting atmospheric air into the cylinder 11, and of controlling the supply of compressed air in this cylinder, to the engine cylinder 1.
These valves can be actuated either automatically or mechanically. Part 13 of the cylinder wall, at the end of cylinder 11 remote from head 12, is perforated but is constructed so as to be able to close, and act as a wall of cy @ -
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
lindre, by means of the movable sleeve 14. In the drawing, the position of the sleeve 14 is such as to give the maximum degree of opening to the perforations and when the piston 10 exceeds these perforations during the active stroke, it Only the part of the cylinder between the cylinder head and the most neighboring perforations is available to supply n air to engine cylinder 1.
If we move the machon 14 to the left, an increasingly large part of the cylinder thus becomes available, and an increasing quantity of air is compressed, with each active stroke, in the engine cylinder 1.
As has been described above, the pressure at which this air can be compressed is limited by practical considerations. So that the engine cylinder 1 can receive large quantities of air without exceeding the authorized pressure, means are provided to increase when desired, the effective volume of the compression space.For this purpose, the thrust bearing 8 is mounted in a movable casing 15, which is made capable of moving longitudinally relative to the frame 16 of the engine, and to cylinder 1 which is fixed to said frame. For this purpose, the casing 15 may be provided with a screw 17 which is provided with means, such as a toothed pinion 18, for rotating it in the nut 19 fixed to the motor frame.
The rotation of the toothed pinion 18, which can be done by hand, @u by means of a gear ,! from the motor itself, or by an independent motor, has the effect of moving longitudinally the motor shaft, the inclined plane 5 and the pistons 2, and 10
If the movement is to the right, the compression space 3 of the cylinder 1 is increased, while the compression space 20 provided in the head of the cylinder 11, and the amount by which the piston 10 exceeds the perforated part 13 of the cylinder head. cylinder 11 are both reduced. Thus, at the same time, cylinder 1 is arranged to receive a greater quantity of air, and cylinder 11 to supply a greater quantity.
This latter effect is further increased if, at the same time, the sleeve 14 moves longitudinally to the left, above the perforated part 13 of the cylinder 11, and for this purpose the toothed pinion 18 can be arranged to engage with it. a toothed pinion 21 mounted on a screw 22 engaging with a nut 23 fixed to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
sleeve 14. the sleeve 14 can also be actuated by means independent of the means used to move the thrust bearing 8.
In addition to the variations made to the quantity of air admitted to the engine cylinder 1 by the means described above, the quantity of fuel supplied to the cylinder can also be varied, for example by varying the stroke of the fuel pump, or by opening or closing a bypass mounted on the fuel supply line, or by other known means.
This mechanism controlling the fuel supply can be automatically coupled to the mechanism for varying the air supply, so that the amounts of air and fuel will increase or decrease at the same time. However, in order to vary the amount of power supplied to the engine to a greater extent, the fuel supply can be continued to decrease after the air supply has been reduced to the limit permitted by its means. control, and lowered to the point where the proportion of fuel to air will be so low that efficient combustion will no longer occur.
When more than one cylinder 11 is used, these cylinders can be arranged so as to open separately into corresponding driving cylinders 1, or else these cylinders may end in a common reservoir, by which the driving cylinders are each supplied in turn. .
Of course, instead of the sleeve 14 working in combination with the perforated cylinder wall 13, other means can be employed to vary the effective volume of the cylinder 11 and in some cases these means can be omitted entirely. , if a sufficient variation in the quantity of combustion air is provided by the variation within the limits of the stroke of the piston 10 'resulting from the movement of the thrust bearing 8.
It is also understood that the thrust bearing 8 may be applied, ie tarnished, to the inclined plane 5, instead of being applied to a collar mounted on the shaft 4, and that the inclined plane 6 may be slidably disposed. ser longitudinally on the shaft, instead of being rigidly mounted on it, and yet various means, other than a screw, may be employed to move the inclined plane longitudinally. So
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
for example, this inclined plane can be moved by the plunger of a small hydraulic press supplied with pressurized oil by a pempe controlled by the engine.
The movement of the thrust bearing, either by a screw or by other means, can be controlled directly by the driver, or can be effected automatically, depending on the speed or load of the engine, by the inter - mediary of a centrifugal regulator or similar organ.
