"PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUXDISPOSITIFS OBTURATEURS OU JOINTS POUR APPAREILS A vIDE"

Fig. 1 est une coupe verticale d'un dispositif obturateur pour le passage de sortie de la chambre à vide, dispositif comportant le joint ou garniture perfectionné de l'invention ;
La figure g est une coupe verticale, à plus grande échel- le,, du joint ou garniture;
La figure 3 est une vue perspective du joint ou garniture;

La figure 5 est une vue en coupe de la garnituro perfec- tionnée, montrant le mode de montage de cette garniture dans l'enveloppe de la chambre à vide;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO CLOSURES OR SEALS FOR VACUUM APPLIANCES"
The invention relates to sealing means or seals for vacuum devices, in particular for vacuum drying devices, and the object of the invention is to establish improved seal devices suitable for being applied on surfaces of the rotating members or cylinders constituting the closure means, and of seal devices or bearing surfaces mounted between the ends of these rotating members or cylinders and the walls of the vacuum chamber, or the members or means of closing it.
The intention consists of a seal or gasket for the sealing cylinders of vacuum apparatuses, comprising a contact member having two longitudinal edges suitable for pressing on a cylinder, and pneumatic means intended to press said member. against the cylinder.
The invention also resides in the fact that the upper surface of the contact member has a recess or depression limited laterally by planar edges suitable for coming into contact with the cylinder, and, at the ends, by other clean flat parts. to come in contact with the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
bottom of a groove made in the frame.
The invention further comprises a vacuum apparatus comprising sealing means which comprise a sealing cylinder provided with a ring, having a bearing surface, removably attached to the end of the cylinder, and a ring. .mounted in or removably fixed to the support frame of said closure means, and which has a clean surface to come into contact with the surface of the ring mounted on the cylinder.
Other features of the invention will be more explicitly defined below as well as in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the same reference characters designate similar parts in the various figures, and:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a closure device for the outlet passage of the vacuum chamber, device comprising the improved seal or packing of the invention;
Figure g is a vertical section, on a larger scale, of the seal or packing;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the seal or gasket;
Figure 4 is a view, partly in co pe, showing the ends of a rotating member, provided with improved support surfaces *;
FIG. 5 is a sectional view of the improved packing, showing the method of mounting this packing in the envelope of the vacuum chamber;
FIG. 6 is a section showing the ends of a rotating member, and a variant of this improved bearing surface. to make the inlet and outlet passages of the vacuum chamber airtight, use is made of three cylinders, 1, 2 and 3, mounted so as to rotate in the shutter frame, which frame is fixed to and forms part of the casing 5 limiting the vacuum chamber A. Cylinders 1 and 2
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
are trimmed with brass. The cylinder ¯3, which is provided with an elastic seal, preferably rubber, is fully or partially supported by the cylinders with brass linings, 1 and 2.
In grooves 6 formed in the members 7 of. the casing 4, there is an improved seal or gasket consisting of the member ± and the tube 10. The upper surface of the member 9 has a recess or depression 11 leaving narrow longitudinal ribs
12 which form the bearing surfaces coming into contact with the rotating members 1 and 2. At the ends of the recess are formed the flat surfaces 13 intended to ensure intimate contact with the end part or frame 5 of the casing. .
The lower ourface of the member 9 has a recess of semi-circular section, 14, intended to receive the tube 10.
This constructive arrangement of the member 9 forms a support at three points, comprising the two ribs 12 and the top of the tube, such as 14 in FIG. 2. This construction also prevents the member 9 from moving and twisting in the grooves
To accommodate the adjustable seal or gasket, grooves 6 are provided, and the gasket or gasket 9 is given a sufficient length so that its ends overhang on both sides of the frame. This construction allows easy placement and removal of the seal. When the tube 10 is inserted into the groove 6, it is closed at one end using the stopper 15, the other end being provided with a stopper 16 in which the duct 17 is engaged allowing the introduction of any suitable fluid.
The line 17 is provided with a valve (not shown) which allows the quantity of fluid introduced into the tube 10 to be regulated, and in this way the member ¯ ± can be pressed to the desired degree against. the surface of the cylinders. The flat surfaces 13 of the member 9 come to bear against the bottom of the groove 6, and form an airtight and watertight seal (FIG. 5).
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The liquid seals 18 are provided to @ mp prevent the passage of air between the periphery of the cylinders 1 and ± and the frame 4 of the shutter. The passage of liquid to the chamber is prevented by the seal 9, and the passage of air between the surface of the cylinder and the seal can be reduced as much as desired by adjusting the amount of fluid admitted into the chamber. tube 10.
The same form of seal or gasket is provided er 19, mata in this case the member 9 is adjusted so as to press more strongly on the surface of the cylinder, and then acts like a scraper to remove the liquid from , and dry the surface of the cylinder.
As can be seen from the examination of FIG. 4, the edge 20 of a cylinder of such device must be sharp to prevent the passage of air into the chamber. Handling of cylinders may cause chipping of this edge, requiring replacement, of the damaged cylinder. To remedy this drawback, the end of the cylinder is fitted with a ring 21 having an end bearing surface 22.
This ring can be bolted to the cylinder, and if it is damaged, it can be replaced by another ring, without discarding the entire cylinder. In the groove 23 of the frame, the bronze ring 24 is housed, held against the face of the ring 22 by the rubber tube 25. For this purpose, a solid rubber tube or sponge rubber can be used. , or any elastic material.
In Figure 6, there is shown another arrangement of bearing surfaces for the ends of the cylinders. The rubber-lined cylinder, 3, is provided with a terminal ring 26, which bears against the ring 27 bolted to the frame.
The terminal ring 21 of the brass-lined cylinder bears against the ring 28 held in place between the ring 29, bolted to the frame, and the ring 27. The ring 28 is held against the ring 21 by a spring band which may be made of sponge rubber or any other elastic material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The high speed rotation of the cylinder ends, against the frame, causes considerable wear.
In the current construction, only the removable bearing surfaces need to be replaced when worn, thus avoiding the replacement of a complete cylinder, or of the end part or frame of the casing.
It is to be provided that any suitable liquid can be provided to lubricate the contact surfaces of the rollers and the frame, and consequently to seal the ends of the cylinders to the passage of air into the vacuum chamber.
