<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements to grease boxes"
The present invention relates to the grease boxes of journals and more particularly to the means of articulation of the lids of the grease boxes.
The main object of the present invention, considered in its general aspect is to provide between the grease box and its cover a pivoting connection such that the cover can be easily applied to and removed from the box, measurements being taken. to prevent the loss of the pivot member and the rotation thereof relative to the cover.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide, for hinging lids to grease boxes, a pin or pivot which can be easily applied and is protected from unwanted removal, without that for this the pivot requires unwanted expensive operations such as riveting.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Another object is to provide, to articulate grease boxes, a pin or a pivot one end of which is bifurcated so that the pivot can be put in place and the branches of this bifurcated part can be grazed to prevent unwanted removal; the pivot is furthermore made of a material such that the branches can be bent several times in one direction and the other without breaking, so that the same pivot can be applied to the box and removed in a number of liver .
A further bat of the invention is to produce a grease box and a hinged cover placed thereon by means of a pivot member having a shape such that it can be put in place and immobilized, either at the hand, or mechanically, by a simple folding operation, without any riveting action, this pivoting member also being provided with a non-circular part cooperating with a tab, handled by a corresponding opening, in the cover so as to prevent rotation between the pivot member and the cover.
A further feature of the invention is to provide a grease box with a cover hinged thereon by means of a pivot, the cover having a strong such that the edges thereof meet the edges of the opening. of the grease box around the entire periphery of it to close it completely, while the pivot has a shape such that it can be easily put in place or removed and that when it is in place, there is held securely and is prevented from rotating relative to the cover.
Other battles and advantages of the invention, relating to the particular arrangement and to the combination of parts, will appear during the description.
In the accompanying drawings, showing the invention of which
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the scope is defined by the claims:
Fig. 1 is a front view of part of a cover constructed and attached to a grease box in accordance with the present invention, part of the cover being removed by a break to more clearly show the covers. characteristics of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view, partly in section, of the construction shown in fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view, corresponding to FIG. 1, but showing a variant.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the variant shown in FIG. 3.
The grease box 1 is provided with a knuckle 2 projecting towards the top on the upper wall 3 of the box, at a point close to the. front edge 4. The knuckle 2 is provided with an opening 5 to receive the pipe or. the pin 6 by means of which the cover 7 is hinged to the grease box. Although, in correlation with the present embodiment of the invention, a particular form of grease box cover has been described below, it goes without saying that the invention is not limited to this cover. seen. that the improved pivot is intended for use with many varied shapes of grease boxes and covers therefor.
The knuckle 2 is provided with bearing faces 8 and 9 arranged at an angle as usual and having received. a shape allowing them to cooperate with a spring mechanism carried by the cover so as to maintain the latter in the open or closed position. The cover 7 is preferably formed from a casting of a material which is preferably cast steel or malleable iron and is provided with a tongue or edge 10 folded down. along da submits and sides. this edge being intended to cover the wall 11 of the opening 12 of the grease box 1 for
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
prevent entry of moisture or dirt into the box.
The cover can also be provided with internal rims 13 and with a drip rim 14 to prevent loss of lubricant.
At its upper end, the cover preferably forms a bell 15 which extends so as to partially enclose the oharnon 2. On the opposite sides, the bell is provided with ears oa of carnations 16 which are pierced in
17 to receive the pivot 6 to. means of which the cover is artioalé to the box. The bell 15 is provided with an opening near its edge 18, the purpose and function of which will be described below.
Inside the body of the cover and outside the grease box, there is a pocket or. a recessed portion 19. Substantially at the point where the pocket 19 connects to the plane of the face of the cover, on the opposite sides of the axis two seats or two projections 20 have been arranged outwardly facing.
On the inner face of the bell 15, at a point close to the lower edge 18, there are provided support tabs 21 comprising curved support sorfaces 22 With a view to providing a means of resiliently retaining the cover in contact with the walls opening 12 when the cover is in the closed position, and also to keep the cover in the open position so as to allow free access to the interior of the grease box, provision has been made for an torsion spring 23 qai est! ou.ni of arms 84, directed downwards and each of which is intended to rest on the year of the seats 20.
Each of the arms 24 extends upward and connects to a coiled portion 25, and from adjacent ends of the coils 25 extend the legs 26 which may be and preferably are joined to form integrally a portion 27 in. U inverted, which is preferably provided with a shoe
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
support 28 which can be connected to the arms 26 by claws
29 The shoe 28 is normally intended to come into contact as shown in FIG. 2, with the face 9 of the knuckle 2 when the cover is in the closed position.
The position of the parts, i.e. the bearing faces 20 and 22 and the recessed portion 19, is such that when the torsion spring 23 is forced upwardly inside the opening between the bell 15 and the cover 7, it is put under a considerable initial tension, this tension serving, with the parts 30 of the tabs 20, to prevent the displacement of the spring.
The parts described so far and their arrangement are substantially the same as in the specification of Belgian patent n 322485, da. December 15, 1924 (or. Of. French patent No. 590452),
The pivot or pin 6 is preferably provided at one end with a head 31 and a non-circular portion 32 located near the head and fit into the corresponding appropriately shaped opening 17 of the knuckle 16 In the pre - In this embodiment, the part 32 of the pivot is made approximately square in section and its dimensions are a little larger than those of the rod or of the main part 33 of the pivot 6, which part is preferably of Circular cross-section.
The opposite end of the pivot 6 is preferably split or bifurcated to form branches 34: and 35 which are cast in the other knuckle 16 of the cover, at. means of the opening 17, of special shape, made in this oharnon. This opening 17 is preferably established in such a form that it widens outwards as shown, so that the banners 34 and 35 can be separated from each other. after their introduction into the opening and thus prevent the unwanted removal of the pivot 6.
If the opening 17 has equal-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
in an elongated flattened shape, according to the embodiment shown, together with the flared shape, so as to have approximately the shape of a laterally flattened truncated cone, with the large base facing outwards and preferably with the elongation in the bottom up direction oa in the length of the harnon, this opening also prevents the rotation of the pivot 6 with respect to the cover 7 when the legs 34 and 35 are separated and put in place. in contact with the ends of 1- 'elongated opening
17. This construction provides an additional means of preventing unwanted rotation of the hinge pin relative to the cover.
In the variant shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, one can see a hinge pin 6a having substantially the same construction except that it is a little longer than that of the pins 1 and 2 and the part 16a of the knuckle extending around the branches 34a and 35a of the pivot 6a is substantially cylindrical over the major part of the knuckle, showing lip portions 36 and 37 folded in opposite directions and providing notches for re-engagement of legs 34a and 35a. when the pins are put in place by folding back, as shown in particular in FIG. 3, the pivot 6a is prevented from being inadvertently withdrawn and furthermore it is prevented from rotating with respect to aa ooaverole.
With the construction described above, the disadvantages of cold riveting to immobilize the hinge pins in position are avoided. It has been noticed that the cold rivare results in bending a certain proportion of the pivots employed because the thing required is stronger than that which the unsupported rod can resist without curling in some cases. This construction also avoids the expense of a hot rivet its:
place and it provides a pivot whose slot can be created by stripping with a saw or. hot punching., ends
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
or the branches being intended to be deployed on site, under a press or by hand using a wedge-shaped tool, to fit into the corresponding knuckle which is preferably formed by means of a core appropriate and more or less in the form of a flattened cone.
The pivot can be very easily removed. When the split ends can be brought together with a hammer and a blunt-nose chisel, these pivots can be used multiple times if they are made of a steel of the desired quality *
A cover constructed in the manner indicated above ensures complete closure of the grease box opening and the bell covering the oharnons covers the entry and accumulation of dust along the face of the box. grease in front of the hinge, and at the same time acts as a water-retaining cover to prevent moisture from entering the underside of the grease box.
CLAIMS.
1. A hinge pin or pin for a grease box cover, comprising a split or bifurcated shank at one end and provided with a head at the other end, a non-circular or square portion being formed near head for the specified purpose.
2. A hinge pin or pin for a grease box cover, intended to extend through a hinge of the box and the lid hinges, and one end of which is split or bifurcated so as to form two parts which can be pushed apart from each other in the corresponding oharnon of the cover, which oharnon has a shape to prevent unwanted removal of the. pivot, and if desired, to prevent rotation thereof relative to the cover.
