<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"improvements to internal combustion engines".
The present invention relates to valves for internal combustion engines and to a mechanism for actuating them.
The object of the invention resides in principle to increase the efficiency, the duration and the economical operation of the machine and to reduce the noise and the vibrations thereof. In particular the aim is to do away with the well-known cam valves and to minimize or reduce the faults and inconveniences resulting therefrom, frequent rectification and monitoring, the use of springs, noise and vibrations, frequent adjustment, lubrication, heat deterioration, warping, bending of rods, multiplicity of moving or wearable parts, leaks, wedges and the like
The general idea which governs the invention consists in providing a cylinder adjacent to the combustion chamber,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
an orifice being provided between them and means acting in said cylinder to alternately open said orifice towards the combustion chamber for the admission of fuel out of a carburetor passing through the cylinder and for the discharge of exhaust gases through said cylinder, to the atmosphere following the usual operating cycle and a four-stroke engine and more specifically provides for the existence of a special or separate cylinder adjacent to the combustion chamber of the ordinary cylinder of an internal combustion engine, and communicating therewith through one or more orifices or openings, a piston valve with orifices operating in said auxiliary cylinder,
the movement being such that it allows alternately the admission of the explosive mixture out of the carburetor and the exhaust of the burnt gases out of the combustion chamber of the engine cylinder, the operation being such as to allow the ordinary four-stroke action in the engine cylinder.
As shown in the example shown in the accompanying drawings, the auxiliary cylinder is preferably arranged little by little. nearly parallel to the driving cylinder, it being understood, however, that the cylindrical valve can be arranged horizontally above or. in any other desired position, the actuation being effected by any suitable mechanical means from the crankshaft or. of a moving part of the machine.
The lateral or parallel arrangement of the valve is preferred, so that in this position the advantage of the usual lubrication method is obtained outside the crankcase without the need for special lubrication means although such forced lubrication presented no difficulty, in the event that. the valve would be disposed above the cylinder, a branch line easily being created from the main oil supply.

the.
In the case of engines of the horizontal type, the lubrication can be carried out by means of elements analogous to those employed in the cylinder itself.
The drawings attached to. This specification shows by way of example a preferred form of the invention in which a side valve is used.

Fig. 10 is a plan view after section taken on line C-C through FIG. 9.
Referring to the drawings, the cylinder 1 containing the piston 2 laterally carries another cylinder 3 connected by an orifice 4 to the cylinder 1. A valve piston 5 is arranged in the cylinder 3 and this valve contains an intake port 6 extending partially around the piston valve as shown in FIG. 2. This inlet port

is likely to be placed vis-à-vis the orifice 4 au. during its reciprocating movement above the intake port is arranged an exhaust port 7. The valve is provided with ordinary segments as shown.
The valve piston is moved alternately by a crank 10 and a connecting rod 11, the crank being pivoted by a reduction transmission by half or. by a chain passing over the toothed wheels 13 and 14 so as to rotate in the same direction of the main shaft 15.
The arm of the crank 10, in the example shown makes an angle of 45 with the horizontal, the connecting rod 11 being articulated on the crank by a universal joint formed by a block comprising two halves 16 (Fig. 4), each of

these 0011vr'Vi two semi-circular notches 17 which, when the elements are connected to each other by bolts pass through the turns 18, form bearings for the pegs 19 of the fork 20 which ends the connecting rod 11. The other end of the rod 11 is connected to the valve 5 by a universal joint SI of the ordinary type. The angle of. arm 10 of the crank which causes the piston to rotate at an angle of 90 during one half revolution, to rotate 90 in the opposite direction during the remainder of the revolution.
An inlet port 22 (Fig. 2) to which the suction line can be connected is provided in cylinder 3, while the exhaust port 23 also leads into cylinder 3.
It should be noted that in the position shown in FIG. 1, the driving piston 2 is at the beginning of its induction stroke, while the valve piston 5 is in a position such that the intake port is about to open.
Fig. 2 showing the position of the orifice with respect to orifices 22 and 23.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In fig. 6, the driving piston 2 begins its return or compression stroke, the crank having traversed an angle of 180 while the crank 10 of the piston-valve has passed from the position of FIG. 1 vars that of fig. 6, that is to say by traversing an angle of / 90 and during this movement the inlet orifice 6 remains open, until having reached the position according to FIG. 6, where it has just closed the intake port 4. During the rotation of the crank 10 from the position of FIG. 1 to that of FIG. 6, the valve should rotate at an angle of 90, that is, from the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 2 to that shown in dotted lines in the same figure.
In fig. 7, the driving piston 2 is shown at the end of its compression stroke or at the beginning of its driving stroke, while the crank 10 will be moved downwards, as shown, while the valve 5 is not performing any action. rotation or very low water. during the downward movement from the position shown in FIG. 6 to that shown in FIG. 7. The exhaust port 7 has moved downwards until it comes up to the height of the port 4. but it does not open the latter as shown in FIG. 8.
In Fig. 8, the piston has reached approximately the end of its driving stroke and the crank 10 pivots the valve piston to a position where the exhaust port 7 begins to open the port 4. the crank is then in a position such that the valve 5 has rotated so that the exhaust port is placed in front of the port 4 and the exhaust 23 as shown in FIG. 10.
From the position in Fig. 9 to the end of the exhaust stroke as shown in fig. 1, the valve performs a slight rotary movement, so that the ori-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The outlet 23 remains fully open when the valve returns upward and thus allowing the products of the combustion products to be fully expelled.
It should be noted that the exhaust port is curved in one direction and on one side of the valve and in the other direction on the other side of the valve. This allows a slight rotary movement which will bring the position shown in figs. 9 and 10 and this shown in FIG. 1, so as to place the orifice 9 opposite the orifices 1 4 and 23.
The valve is hollow (Fig. 3) so that none takes place in the space above the valve and that no pressure is produced there. In this case a socket 25 is connected to the walls of the valve by arms 26 and in this socket the rod 27 of the fork forming part of the universal joint 21 is screwed and wedged by means of a tightening nut 28. The walls of. cylinder 3 are sprayed with oil out of the crankcase and lubricating the piston valve 5 so that the piston 2 is greased and since the valve is hollow, any excess oil which is beyond The valve falls freely through the valve into the housing so that the valve is constantly lubricated.
A look 29 is provided in the housing and is closed by the cover 30.
According to a variant, a common orifice may be provided in the valve piston and two orifices in cylinder 3 towards the combustion chamber of cylinder 1, this common orifice being capable of connecting the inlet orifice with an orifice and the exhaust port with the other.
