<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

fig.

Assembly of the switch for electrical warning devices for automobiles.
@ The present invention relates to an assembly of the switch of the electric warning device of automobiles in which the steering shaft cannot be used for mounting the switch but is, on the contrary, used for other functions, for example to receive the adjustment linkage for fuel, ignition, etc.
The switch itself may be a toggle switch or a push-button switch, and it may be arranged directly or indirectly on the value itself or else quite independently of the steering wheel, on a support plate placed above that. -this. If the switch is fixed to a special support plate, this can still carry at the same time in a clearly visible position all the other instruments and devices which the driver has to put on or use, or the most important of these instruments.
If the support plate occupies a fixed position above the steering wheel; it is most advantageously fixed in the manner of a pitre, preferably with an inclination adapted to that of the steering wheel, to the vehicle apron or to the fixed column of management.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the present invention, the control handle of the switch (that is to say for a switch to lever the free end of the lever and for a button switch the push button) must always be located at a well-determined location, namely: above the axis of the steering wheel so that it is always there only that it must be grasped and operated by the driver's hand.
It is therefore completely irrelevant, even in the case of a switch attached to the steering wheel, whether the steering wheel undergoes any angular displacements; the switch must always be operated at the same place, which is above it. The driver's hand thus acquires such a habit that even in the dark it always grasps the switch control handle with absolute safety and is able to give the exact signal required.
The switch for the electrical warning device, for example a horn, horn, etc., can also be connected directly to a rotary switch or form a rotary switch, whether it is itself in the form of a toggle switch or that of a button switch and whether it is mounted directly or indirectly on the steering wheel or fixed to a support plate fixed above the steering wheel. The rotary switch will be used in this case to establish special circuits for the main switch, for example for the production of a damped signal for traffic in towns or for the production of the full signal for traffic in the countryside. The rotary switch can also be used to make connections independent of the main switch.
It is possible, for example, by turning the rotary switch to the left, to reduce the light of the headlights and by turning it to the right, to activate the full light. By turning to the left, cn could also emit a signal to turn to the left while by turning to the right a signal would be emitted to turn to the right.
If the main switch is a toggle switch, the handle on the free end of the lever, which is located above the steering wheel axle, takes the form of a rotary switch and if it is a commutator - push-button switch, the movable button can be used as a rotary switch.

The drawing shows different exemplary embodiments of the invention, FIG. 1 shows in section and in front view the arrangement of a lever switch directly on the steering wheel, by fixing) on one of the spokes thereof.
Fig. 2 shows in section and in front view the same arrangement of the switch but with the control handle from a rotary switch.
Fig. 3 shows in section and in front view the arrangement of a particular support plate for the switch on the steering wheel and the switch established in the form of an ordinary button switch or a button switch combined with a switch rotary.
Fig. 4 shows in section and in front view the arrangement of a particular fixed support plate, for the switch, above the steering wheel, with attachment to the vehicle apron, and the switch itself established again in the form of A regular button switch or a button switch combined with a rotary switch.
Fig. 5 shows in section and in front view the arrangement of a fixed support plate for the switch above the steering wheel, but this time with attachment to the fixed steering column. of the vehicle, and the switch itself in the form of a toggle switch.
In all the figures, the wall of the panel is represented by a, by b the steering wheel, by c the steering shaft and by d the steering column. In fig, l, a simple lever switch e has been attached to one of the spokes of the steering wheel b and this switch thus participates in the movements of the steering wheel. It can also be attached to the crown of the steering wheel. Its res ... lever exits f extends with its free end inwards to above the axis of the steering wheel and forms in this place a handle to enter control g.
The latter can, with a certain play in a downwardly directed sleeve gl, a projecting part of the steering shaft, for example the head of the steering wheel fixing screw, and thus receives a guide. This guide constitutes a means of securing -
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
safety avoiding lateral tension and compression of the lever and can effectively assume the possible breakage of the lever in these lateral shocks. The contact is formed by simply pressing the control handle with your hand. When this pressure ceases the lever f returns to its initial position under the action of a spring.
In the embodiment of FIG. 3, the end of the lever which is still above the axis of the valant has taken the form of a rotary switch h. The lever f can for this purpose be hollow and contain the conductors ending at the contacts of the rotary switch h. The rotary switch button of the latter is advantageously provided with an appropriate mark allowing the connection position of the rotary switch to be always recognized from the outside and suitable devices required for stop notches make it possible to ensure that this button always remains in the positions given to him.
In the embodiment of FIG. 5, a particular support plate i was fixed to the volan b, either on a spoke or on the crown of the steering wheel. On this plate i is placed, above the axis of the steering wheel b, the switch for the appliance with electrical weaver, switch which is here supposed to be an ordinary switch & button or else a button switch combined with a rotary switch k. We have designated by 1 ins trumebts, for example a voltmeter and an ammeter, or similar instruments which can still be placed visibly on the plate i carrying the commutator and are then more easily observable than in the position where one currently puts them.
In the exemplary embodiments of FIGS. 4 and 5, the switch support plate is designated m and extends like a console while standing still above the steering wheel. 5 * In the embodiment of FIG. 4 it is attached, by means of a support extending over the steering wheel, to the apron of the vehicle and in the form of FIG. 5 it fixes by means of supports similar to the fixed steering column d of the vehicle.
While in the embodiment of the

fig. 4, the switch for the electric warning device is also assumed to be an ordinary button switch or a button switch combined with a rotary switch, it has been assumed in FIG. 5 that c, is a lever switch e comprising a lever f, the free end of which is with the control handle which can also form a rotary switch above the axis of the steering wheel. On the support plate m of the switch are placed above the switch itself all other instruments and devices important to the driver, for example the tachometer, the voltmeter and the ammeter, the watch, the oil pressure indicator, the start button etc. .
The /! the driver has them in this place constantly under the eyes and can 'monitor them better than at present because these devices were until now scattered on the apron of the vehicle. a lamp o which is preferably a tubular lamp, provided on the upper edge of the switch support plate serves to illuminate in the dark all the instruments and apparatus carried by this plate. In the embodiment of FIG. 3 Of course, only instruments and devices with flexible connecting conductors which do not obstruct the rotation of the steering wheel according to the usual amplitude during travel can be fixed to the switch support plate i.
Wherever the switch is placed on a particular support plate i or m, whether on or above the steering wheel, this plate may be provided on its underside with a gripping socket. a projecting part in the center of the steering wheel which can serve as a guide and a safety device to prevent lateral stresses in traction and in. pressio
