<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"DEVICE FOR ADJUSTING THE APPROXIMATION OF A TRAILER IN RELATION TO THE TRACTOR VEHICLE"
The present invention relates to a device intended to adjust the approach of a trailer with respect to the towing vehicle, both during changes of direction and during changes in slope.
Moving a large tonnage trailer with a truck gave rise to significant road traffic problems at all times. One of these main problems is the need to maintain a separation between the truck and the trailer such that during changes of direction and changes in gradient there is no problem of contact between them because of their closeness .
This necessary separation in turn poses another important problem: the effort required of the engine to overcome the resistance of the air offered by the front face of the trailer; this gives rise to a corresponding increase in consumption and a reduction in cruising speed, and all the more important the greater this separation.
Hence the importance for road transport of keeping the trailer as close as possible to the tractor.
We tried, by various means, to obtain during traffic, a rapprochement between the rear part of the truck and the front part of the trailer and a separation during changes of direction.
The known technique consists in installing between the trailer and the truck a sensor which, during the turns, acts on an electropneumatic mechanism which causes the separation of the two parts and makes them return to their initial position during straight line traffic.
The invention provides a system which performs the same function, but, with the difference that the technique in question does not use any probe, because it acts by means of a proximity detector which is responsible for controlling the device for separation or corresponding separation which has been carried out specially for this purpose.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
But, in addition, the proximity detectors act not only during changes of direction, but also activate the separation system when the vehicle is moving on a change in gradient.
To this end, a set of mechanisms has been studied by means of which the detectors can act with full guarantee of efficiency. This is how the detection system transmits the separation order by means of actuation, provided that the normal separation between the truck and the trailer is changed, either by a change of direction or by a change in gradient , to increase the separation in order to avoid a collision between the two parties, the minimum programmed separation being restored when the circumstances in question have disappeared.
In the construction of the system which constitutes the object of the invention, the following elements intervene:
1. - A set of proximity switches arranged along a horizontal arc, the central point of which coincides with the axis of symmetry of the swivel joint of the tow bar, on which the aprons which activate the switches are arranged , so that they act during changes of direction of the vehicle.
2.-A balance device arranged in the lower part of the bell which protects the attachment system of the pull-up bar, in which one is arranged. detecting which acts only during changes in gradient of positive angle, the detector separating from the bar when the latter ceases to occupy a horizontal position, this device being further provided with adjustment means.
3.-A set of mechanical elements by means of which the separation or physical approximation of the truck and the trailer is carried out, and which is constituted by two parallel guides which support a sliding carriage, which supports the bell for hanging the bar towing vehicle, this carriage being moved by a pneumatic cylinder disposed between

guides and controlled by detectors.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will be better understood on reading the description which follows of an exemplary embodiment and with reference to the appended drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a schematic plan view of the detector devices which act during changes of direction. The bell l which supports the ball joint 2 of the drawbar 3 comprises, arranged in the form of a fan) horizontal, three detectors 4, 5 and 6. In the figure it is assumed that the vehicle is traveling in a straight line. The central detector 5 is located opposite the apron 7 mounted on the drawbar, so that it activates the maximum approximation system.
A change of direction to the left or to the right activates the detectors 4 and 6 respectively, which causes the operation of the separation system; FIG. 2 represents the diagram of the preceding figure in which the coordinates A, B and C correspond respectively to the positions of changes of direction (A and C) and the displacement in a straight line (B), which coincide with the position of the detectors correspondents; FIG. 3 represents a plan diagram of a tractor and a trailer according to the principle described above.
In this diagram, it can be seen that, despite the change of direction made by the trailer, the separation is maintained at the points closest to the two parts of the vehicle, which makes it possible to carry out the maneuver safely; FIG. 4 represents a view in section and in elevation of the same assembly, in which one can see the detection system during the changes in slope. This system consists of a pendulum 8 with an axis of rotation 9, on a bracket 10 which can rotate relative to the support 11 integral with the bell 1. One end of the pendulum tends to be raised by a spring 12 located between the angular upper part 13 of the pendulum and the bracket 10.
On bed-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
querre is located a screw 14 which adjusts the inclination of the balan cier by opposing the effect of the spring. The free end of the pendulum supports a detector 15 located opposite the base of the tow bar 3 which serves as its apron. From the actual support of the detector comes a rod 16 which is housed between the parallel guides 17 by means of which the detector follows the angular movement of the drawbar.
This allows the separation or reconciliation device to be controlled during changes in gradient; FIG. 5 represents a diagram identical to the previous one, in which the coordinates D, E and F correspond respectively to the positions of changes in slope (D and F) and of horizontal displacement (E).
In positions E and F there is no separation and only the one which is intended for horizontal line circulation is maintained. It is not the same for position D in which the detector acts to determine the adequate separation distance for suitable traffic; FIG. 6 represents the diagram in elevation of a towing vehicle and a trailer, in agreement with the principle described in the preceding figure, In this diagram, it can be seen that the change in gradient, position D, gave rise to a movement of the carriage 18 which supports the hooking system of the drawbar, which is not modified in the positions E and F.
The theoretical minimum distances between the edges closest to the tractor and the trailer are ensured in all cases by the displacement of the drawbar; 7 shows a schematic elevational view of the carriage 18 to which is connected the attachment system of the pull bar (not shown), this carriage being mounted on two parallel guides 19, on which it can slide. These guides are located below the truck and they are supported on the supports 20 and 21 connected to the chassis 22; Figure 8 shows a schematic elevation view
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
tick of the carriage displacement device 18, which is constituted by a pneumatic cylinder 23 which is situated between the two parallel guides 19 which can be seen in FIG. 7.
The piston 24 of the cylinder is connected by the articulation 25 to the carriage 18; FIG. 9 represents the plan view of the device to which reference is made in FIGS. 7 and 8, and this view makes it possible to see the arrangement of their elements, the numerical references of which have been described above. The separation of the guides as well as their dimensions should be chosen as best as possible according to the intended application.
Of course, various modifications can be made by those skilled in the art to the devices or methods which have just been described only by way of nonlimiting example, without departing from the scope of the invention.
