procédé de granulation du sulfate de potassium
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
potassium.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

granulation process for potassium sulfate
EMI1.1
Modern smoking techniques require, as is well known, the use of granulated nutrient vehicles. Unlike other mono-and poly-nutritive fertilizers, it has only been comparatively late that we have known methods of granulating potassium sulphate, from which it is concluded that agglomeration or agglutination primary particles in a sufficiently solid granular framework is difficult to achieve.
As a possible solution to research for the preparation of granular potassium sulphate, German patent DE-PS 28 10 640 describes a compaction process, according to which the material to be granulated is densified in so-called scales or lamellae. a special way between the rollers of a roller press working under high pressure. By breaking the scales and sieving the granular material resulting from this break, it is possible to obtain the product in the desired particle size and with good quality by subjecting it to a subsequent treatment.
The compaction process has been found to be perfectly suitable for the production of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
potassium. Nevertheless, there still remained the wish to have a rolling granulation process during the manufacture of this fertilizer. The compaction process gives in particular angular grains which do not allow themselves to be mixed optimally with spherical grains of other fertilizers and which lead to increased abrasion of the mixture during transhipment.
EMI2.1
repeated.
The mixture known internationally as "Bulk Blending" of individual fertilizers in the warehouse of the depositary or of the seller acquires more and more supporters, even in Europe, since the mixture close to the place of exploitation allows an adaptation of the ratio of nutrients to individual distribution requirements. However, this process requires that all the individual fertilizers to be mixed have a largely identical particle size and, if possible, also of substantially equal density (of the grains), to allow easy mixing with a reduced risk of mixing during transhipment and during spreading.
Therefore, preference is also given to substantially spherical grains since a bulk product consisting of such grains has better flow properties during storage and removal from warehouses than a bulk product made up of glitter grains.
Various materials have been proposed as granulation aids. Patent application DE-OS 26 03 917 recommends the use of calcium compounds which bind to potassium sulphate in double syngenitic salts.
The subject of patent application DE-OS 27 48 220 is the granulation of potassium chloride, potassium nitrate, potassium sulphate, potassium carbonate and langbeinite with potassium phosphate.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
sium, sodium phosphate or mono and dibasic ammonium phosphate.
Patent DE-PS 20 21 963 seeks to solve the problem of granulation by rolling calcium sulphate by the use of starch as a granulation aid. It is found in this case that the starch acts too weakly by itself and that, therefore it is necessary to use a salt solution for the humidification of the granulation mixture, salt solution which contains sulfate magnesium and possibly also potassium sulfate. During the drying of the green grains will form double salts which, during their crystallization, bind the primary particles of potassium sulphate.
We have now discovered, not without surprise, that the activity of starch serving as a granulation aid is greatly improved, when instead of a salt solution, drinking water is used which is practically free of salt for the humidification of potassium sulphate, part of which had been subjected to additional dry milling. Granules resistant to abrasion are obtained with the use of 2 to 3 kg of gelatinized starch for one tonne of good grains.
The aforementioned additional grinding ensures, by virtue of the sudivision of a larger portion of the calcium sulphate particles subjected to this grinding up to a size less than zus, an increase in the surface of the particles per unit of mass and an activation of the particles. concerned.
It is assumed that the recrystallization is accelerated by the immediately preceding mechanical action. It can also be imagined that activated potassium sulphate dissolves very quickly in the humidification water and sticks to the starch and thereby partly displaces the colloidal dissolved starch from the solution and binds to
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the surface of potassium sulfate particles. It is possible that this film promotes the growth of potassium sulfate enters into solution on the surfaces of undissolved potassium sulfate particles, while the fraction of starch remaining in solution suppresses the formation of germs in the solution film between particles.
The process according to the present invention is characterized in that, relative to the quantity of good grains discharged, approximately 20 to approximately 40% of the potassium sulphate is subjected, before the preparation of the mixture to be granulated wet, to a ground coffee. dry activation in a mill which grinds more than half of the material to be ground up to a particle size of less than 50 m, the partial quantity activated is combined with the main quantity of the product to be granulated in the mixer, the mixture is moistened with water, with the addition of 1 to 5 kg of gelatinized starch per tonne of good beans removed and rolled up,
the green granules are dried at a temperature between 105 and 120 C to a residual moisture content of 0.1 to 5% and, finally, the good grains of the dried granule are separated by sieving and they are removed, while the defective grains are returned to the mixer after grinding.
Furthermore, the process is characterized in that either a part of the potassium sulphate which is freshly brought to the process is subjected, depending on the evacuation of good grains, or a part of the defective grains of potassium sulphate separated by sieving the granulated product after prior grinding, to dry activation milling.
The process according to the present invention is further characterized in that the water-soluble salt of a lignin-sulfonic acid is added in a dose of 0.1 to 1 kg per tonne of good grains discharged to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
mixture of potassium sulphate to be granulated together with gelatinized starch.
EMI5.1
Like almost any granulation process, that in accordance with the present invention also gives certain proportions of over-sized and sub-sized grains in the dried granule from which they are separated by screening and which are then recycled, while the good ones are removed. grains as a product. The defective grains form, in the stationary case, a partial cycle with a constant recycling current. Fresh potassium sulphate is brought to the process depending on the evacuation of the good grains.
In principle, it has been shown to be irrelevant whether part of the fresh potassium sulphate, or a corresponding part of potassium sulphate recycled in the form of defective grains, is subjected to the activation grind. With a view to re-acquiring its granulability by rolling, the recycled material must be moistened together with fresh material. To compensate for the disadvantage of drying and re-humidifying the partial stream of recycled material, the wet crystalline material obtained on the filter is advantageously used as fresh potassium sulphate.
This is possible when undertaking the dry activation milling on the defective grains. The result is only slightly different from that obtained when using fresh dry potassium sulphate and in party activated.
Although the water-saving activity of ligninsulfonates is known from the manufacture of concrete for construction and from other fields, the addition of lignin sulfonate to mixtures
EMI5.2
to be granulated cannot generally be recommended, since its salts frequently exhibit disintegrating activity on the structure.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
During the granulation of the calcium sulphate, the lignin sulphonate not only made it possible to achieve an expected saving in humidification water, but surprisingly also to a notable increase in the resistance or solidity of the granules vis-à-vis - abrasion. The humidity required for running the mixture was, for an addition of 0.5 kg of sodium ligninsulfonate per tonne of good beans, approximately 20% below that which was needed without this additive.
When one thinks that even a potassium sulphate so fine as that which one achieves by the implementation of a process for the manufacture of potassium sulphate implemented on a large industrial scale with a particle size varying from 90 to 250 μm ( 58%) does not allow itself to be densified by rolling into granules resistant to the green state and that the addition of starch glue to the material to be granulated moistened with water brings only an insignificant improvement, the progress brought by implementing the method according to the present invention appears very clearly.
It is not the individual measurements, but rather the combination of the activation grind and the addition of starch which ensure the densification of the structure during the rolling and the welding of the primary particles into a mechanically solid assembly with the interior of the granules during drying. On the contrary, untreated potassium sulphate green granules are so loose in structure that they do not largely resist drying. The addition of a% gelatinized starch improves, it is true, the structure in the case of green granules, which however largely lose their resistance to abrasion during drying. The test gives an abrasion value of 32%.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
If 30% of the potassium sulphate used is subjected to an activation grind, the active potassium sulphate is added to the untreated sulphate, it is moistened, rolled up and dried, then granules whose test gives an abrasion value of 18%. Although the activation milling alone already brings a great improvement in the resistance of the granules which corresponds practically already to that of the granules obtained during the implementation of the method proposed in patent DE-PS 20 21 963 (without post-treatment), the full result is only obtained by adding 2 to 3 kg of gelatinized starch per tonne of product.
The granules thus produced show an abrasion value of 4 to 8% during the test. In this case, it is remarkable that the granules do not decompose when introduced into water, but rather dissolve therein rather like large individual crystals. This observation provides proof of a particularly solid mutual welding of the primary particles which constitute the granules. Such high consistency or adhesion of the primary particles can only be obtained in granules produced by other methods, only by a complicated post-treatment of the granule, such as spraying with water, or a solution, or vapors, or the like, accompanied by further drying.
Unlike the process according to patent DE-PS 20 21 963, the process according to the present invention additionally provides the possibility of energy saving by the use of wet potassium sulfate as obtained on the filter, so that one

wet.
The examples which follow illustrate the process according to the present invention without however limiting its principle to the digital data which appear in the examples.
Example 1
In this case, the material to be granulated consists of a non-crystallized potassium sulfate. 8% by mass of the sulfate have a particle size greater than 500> m. 70% by mass have a size which varies from 200 to 500
EMI8.1
, um, 19% by mass of the product has one which fluctuates from 100 to 200 µm and 3% by mass has a particle size of less than <100 µm.
40 parts by weight of this potassium sulphate are ground in a ball mill with a view to ensuring its activation, for a period which extends until a fraction of 2 thirds of this latter proportion exhibits a particle size less than <45 m. The potassium sulphate thus active is combined with 60 parts by weight of potassium sulphate sensing its original particle size in the mixer and 0.3 parts by weight of starch are then introduced therein which has been gelatinized in boiling in 4 parts by weight of water. During the mixing or kneading process, water was added until a pre-granulation was visible. To this end, about 6 parts by weight of water was required.
The granules are formed and densified by rolling in the granulation bowl. Then, they were dried at 1100C to a residual humidity of 0.2%. The sieved and tested grains had a burst strength of 24 N / grain after one day and a burst strength of 35 N / grain after 30 days.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
Abrasion resistance was measured, 7% after one day and 6% after 30 days.
Example 2
Starting from the same starting material and the same dry preparation as those described in Example 1, the starch glue was mixed with humidification water before it was introduced into the mixer. The granule obtained was dried in the green state by rolling at 105 ° C. to a residual moisture content of 0.4%. After a day there. burst strength was up to 26 N / grain; the abrasion resistance was 6%.

L 90 µm 32% 500 parts by weight of defective grain recycling product was ground to a particle size of less than 500 µm. 150 parts by weight of the industrial potassium sulphate was subjected to the activation grind in a bar mill. 73% of the activated potassium sulphate had a particle size smaller than
45 um. The recycling material and activated potassium sulfate were introduced along with 350 parts by weight of untreated potassium sulfate in a ploughshare.
To the dry material was added 105 parts by weight of water in which we had previously dissolved colloidally 1, 5

part by weight of gelatinized starch and an intimate mixture was then carried out. The wet mixture was introduced into a rotary drum on the inlet side from which 5 parts by weight of water were once again atomized.
During the rolling effect of the material to be granulated through the drum, green, almost spherical granules formed with a very smooth surface. The granules leaving the rolling drum were dried at 115 ° C to a residual humidity of 0.2%.
After separation of the good grains to be disposed of, the defective grains were returned as a recycling product at the start of the process. On the product obtained, a burst strength of 31 N / grain and an abrasion value of 6% were measured.
Example 4
The procedure was the same as that described
EMI10.1
in Example 3 until the humidification step.
In addition to the 1.5 part by weight of starch, 0.3 part by weight of sodium lignin sulfonate was dissolved in the humidification water. In an otherwise identical operating mode, this recipe gives, as in the previous example, granules with a burst strength of 34 N / grain after one day and 41 N / grain after 30 days, as also an abrasion value during the test of 6% after one day and 3% after 30 days.
Example 5
Industrial calcium sulphate with the particle size specified in Example 3 had, in the undried state, a humidity of 11%, that is to say that 100 parts by weight of dry substance contained in the wet state. as obtained on the filter, 12, 4 parts of water. With a defective grain to good grain ratio of 2: 3,

the overall introduction of calcium sulphate could be carried out in wet form.
The recycled material stream from the process had an order of magnitude of 400 parts by weight. From this current, a partial current of the order of 180 parts by weight per hour was derived which was sent to an activation mill. After the ball mill for air separation, the two dry partial streams were combined and introduced at the same time as 600 parts by weight of wet potassium sulphate in a continuous-flow mixer. In this, a solution of 1.1 parts by weight of starch and 0.12 parts by weight of magnesium ligninsulfonate in 21.6 parts e was also continuously injected. n weight of water.
The material to be granulated thus prepared had, at the inlet of the rolling drum, a water content of 96 parts by weight per 1000 parts by weight of dry substance, which corresponded to 8.8% of moisture. In the rolling drum, an additional 5 parts by weight of water was sprayed per hour. The granules, in the green state, had a water content of about 9.2%. They were dried at 1100C to a residual moisture content of 0.2%. After sieving, 600 parts by weight of good grain was removed as product. The 400 parts by weight of defective grain was returned after premilling to a size below 250 µm as recycling material at the start of the process.
During the implementation of the procedure thus described, 0.165 tonnes of H 2 O / tonne of
EMI11.1
product was to evaporate. This faced a saving of 0.124 t of evaporated H2O / tonne of dry substance in the wet potassium sulphate used.
The granulation process also required only 0.041 t of evaporated H2O / tonne of product in addition to drying the potassium sulphate without granules.

lation. A burst strength titer was measured during the test of 28 N / grain after one day and. of 38 N / grain after 30 days. After one day, the abrasion value was 7% and 4% after 30 days.
The dissolution test revealed that the granules thrown into the water did not decompose. They would dissolve in about 2 hours, similar to that of a single large crystal.
