28 situé entre la boîte de conserve 1 et l'enveloppe 2 avant l'introduction dans cet espace 28 des réactifs ; b) l'utilisation d'un sac 7 étanche contenant l'eau 6 permet d'accroître l'efficacité du chauffage de la boîte de conserve au cours du temps ; c) l'utilisation du joint 8 muni au voisinage de son bord intérieur d'une rainure 10 permet un excellent centrage de la boîte de conserve 1 dans l'enveloppe 2 ; d) l'existence de zones amincies 24 dans le joint 8 permet un percement sans effort du joint 8 et du sac 7 contenant de l'eau ;
SELF-HEATING BOX AND ITS MANUFACTURE
The present invention relates to a self-heating box for canned items and to a process for the manufacture of such a box.
The self-heating box according to the invention is of the known type comprising a tin can surrounded by a sealed envelope closed at its two ends and containing quicklime and water separated from each other by a wall capable of be perforated or torn, the closure provided at one end between the tin can and the envelope being constituted by a perforable annular seal.
EP-A-0 082 834 discloses a self-heating box of the type defined in the preceding paragraph. In this known box, the perforable seal consists of an annular band, preferably of metal, which is pressed by its inner peripheral edge on the corresponding edge of the can and crimped by its outer edge to the corresponding edge of the envelope.
Double centering of the annular band is a time-consuming and expensive operation. In addition, this operation risks deforming the can and / or the envelope surrounding it.
The subject of the present invention is a self-heating box of simpler design which does not have the above-mentioned drawbacks.
According to the invention, the self-heating box of the type described in the second paragraph of this specification is essentially. characterized in that the annular perforable seal made of elastically deformable material has at least one peripheral edge gripped in a leaktight manner on a bead provided at one end of the can or envelope.
In one embodiment of the self-heating box according to the invention, the perforable annular seal has, along at least one of its peripheral edges, an annular groove in which the abovementioned bead hangs. This means that the bead provided at one end of the can or envelope comes to lodge in the groove of the joint under the effect of a pressure causing a temporary deformation of the groove, so that this bead comes be blocked there, so as to ensure a tight closure of the gap between the envelope and the can at one of their ends.
According to a feature of the self-heating can according to the invention, the perforable annular seal has at its internal periphery a groove in which is blocked the end bead of the can and at its external periphery a skirt tight against the internal face of the envelope at the corresponding end thereof.
The invention also relates to a manufacturing process. tion of a self-heating box of the type described above.
The process according to the invention is essentially characterized in that it comprises the following stages:
a) an annular seal made of an elastically deformable material is fixed to an envelope open at its two ends and to a tin can placed in this envelope so as to seal one end of the gap between the envelope and the tin can, b) place a waterproof bag containing water in the gap between the envelope and the tin in the vicinity of the joint, c) introduce quicklime in said gap, and d) closes the end, opposite the aforementioned joint, of the envelope.
Other particularities and details will emerge from the following detailed description in which reference is made to the attached schematic drawings.
In these drawings:
FIG. 1 is a vertical section of a self-heating box according to the invention,
- Figures 2 and 3 are partial cross-sectional views of annular seals, and Figures 4 to 7 schematically show different stages of a method of manufacturing a self-heating box according to the invention.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
Figure 1 shows, in vertical section, a self-heating box comprising a can 1, preferably metallic, surrounded by a sealed envelope 2, preferably metallic, closed at its two ends 3,4 and containing quicklime 5 and water 6, the latter being contained in a flexible or rigid bag 7 based on aluminum.
The closure provided at one (4) of the ends of the envelope 2 between the latter and the can 1 is constituted by an annular seal 8 which can be perforated in an elastically deformable material such as polypropylene. This seal 8 has along its inner peripheral edge 9 an annular groove 10 in which a bead 11 is hooked located at one end 12 of the can 1, so as to seal the can 1 ring seal 8.
The annular seal 8 has along its outer peripheral edge 13 a skirt 14 consisting of an annular rim 15 inclined relative to the internal surface 16 of the casing 2 and directed towards the end (3) of the casing 2 opposite to that (4) closed by the seal 8. This skirt 14 is clamped against the internal surface 16 of the casing 2 and against an internal flange 17 thereof, so as to connect, in a leaktight manner, the seal 8 on the inside of the envelope 2.
The can 1 which can contain a drink, food such as meat, vegetables, soup, etc., has a bottom 18 provided with an annular bead 19 and a cover 20 preferably with easy opening 21 .
The casing 2 is closed by crimping at its end (3) opposite to that (4) fixed to the joint 8 by a bottom 22.
The envelope 2 is advantageously surrounded by a thermally insulating layer 23, for example of expanded polyethylene.
Between the envelope 2 and the can 1 are placed the water 6 contained in the bag 7 and the quicklime 5 (which can be a mixture of several quicklimes) which, when brought into contact, react and allow to heat the food contained in the can 1.
The bag 7 is located in the vicinity of the joint 8 and preferably just below this joint 8 which advantageously has thinned zones 24 allowing it to be easily perforated using a needle.
Figures 2 and 3 are partial cross-sectional views of annular seals 8 of an elastically deformable material.
The annular seal 8 shown schematically in Figure 2 has along its inner peripheral edge 9 a groove 10 in which is hooked or blocked a bead 11 located at one end of the can 1. Along its edge external device 13, the seal has a skirt 14 which is clamped against the internal wall 16 of an envelope 2 and against an internal rim 17 of this envelope 2.
As for the annular seal 8 shown in Figure 3, it differs from that shown in Figure 2 only by the presence of a groove 25 along its outer peripheral edge 13 in which comes to hang or block a bead 26 provided at one end of the envelope 2.
Figures 4 to 7 schematically show a method of manufacturing a self-heating box according to the invention, in which the perforable annular seal used is the seal shown in Figure
3.
A peripheral internal edge 9 of a perforable annular seal 8 of elastically deformable material is gripped on a bead 11 situated at one end of the can 1 by pressing a gripping means provided along the peripheral internal edge 9 of the seal 8 , such as a groove 10, in a bead 11 located at one end of the can 1
(see figure 4).
Then, the tin can with the seal 8 is turned over so as to bring the end of the tin can with the seal on a support 27
(see FIG. 5) and a bead 26 provided at one end of the casing 2 is gripped on a peripheral external edge 13 of the joint 8 by pressing said bead 26 in a groove 25.
In a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the gripping of the joint to the can 1 and to the casing 2 is obtained in the following manner:
A seal 8 is deposited on a support having at each of its peripheral edges 9,13, a groove 10,25, these grooves being open in the direction opposite to that of the support 27, and the tin can 1 and the envelope 2 each provided at one of their ends with a bead 11,26, by pressing said beads 11,26 in the grooves 10,25 of the joint 8.
A space 28 is thus obtained between the can 1 and the envelope 2, which is closed at its end 4 adjacent to the support 27.
Is introduced into this space 28 a waterproof bag 7, rigid or preferably flexible, based on aluminum containing water, so as to bring it near the joint 8 (see Figure 6).
Quick lime is then poured into this space 28 onto the sealed bag 7, preferably in the form of grains having a particle size between 2 and 5 mm (see FIG. 6).
When all the reagents are introduced into the space between the casing 2 and the can 1, a bottom 22 is crimped at the end 3 of the casing 2 opposite to that (4) adjacent to the joint 8 (see figure
7).
In the case where the seal used is that shown in FIG. 2, the manufacturing process comprises the following steps:
a) the internal peripheral edge 9 of the perforable annular seal 8 is gripped on the bead 11 situated at one end of the tin can 1, by pressing the bead 11 in the groove 10 located along the peripheral internal edge of the seal 8 or by pressing the seal 8 on the bead 11.
b) is introduced into the envelope 2, by one of its ends, the can 1 to which is gripped the seal 8 which is provided at its outer peripheral edge 13 with a skirt 14, so as to bring the annular seal 8 in the vicinity of the other end of the envelope and to clamp the skirt against the internal face 16 of the envelope 2 and against the internal rim 17 thereof, c) the reagents are introduced into the space between the casing 2 and the can, and d) a bottom 22 is crimped at the end 3 of the casing 2 opposite to that adjacent to the joint 8.
In a variant of the manufacturing process described above, the seal 8 is introduced into the envelope 2 before gripping it in the can 1.
The method of manufacturing self-heating cans according to the invention makes it possible to obtain cans having the additional advantages set out below compared with known cans: a) the lid 20 with easy opening 21 of the can 1 is clean, because it is isolated from space
28 located between the can 1 and the envelope 2 before the introduction into this space 28 of the reagents; b) the use of a waterproof bag 7 containing the water 6 makes it possible to increase the efficiency of the heating of the can over time; c) the use of the gasket 8 provided in the vicinity of its inner edge with a groove 10 allows excellent centering of the can 1 in the casing 2; d) the existence of thinned zones 24 in the joint 8 allows effortless piercing of the joint 8 and of the bag 7 containing water;
e) the use of seals made of elastically deformable material reduces the risk of lime splashing, because the holes drilled in the seal 8 during use tend to close; f) the introduction of lime into the space between the can 1 and the casing 2 is easier, because lime can, without disadvantage, be present on the bottom opposite to that where the cover is located easy opening 21 of the can 1, since the food is consumed by the end 4.
The present invention is naturally not limited to the embodiment as well as to its manufacturing method described above.
Thus, a mixture of quicklime can be used as a reagent and the joint having a central opening can be tightened on the end provided with the system for easy opening of the can before introducing it into the envelope.
Can also be manufactured by the process according to the present invention of boxes of any shape, for example of parallelepiped shape.
