Address for Service: Complete Specification for the invention entitled: FASTENING FOR INSULATING GLASS PANELS TO FACADES AND ROOFS The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me:i The present invention relates to a fastening for insulating glass panels of an external wall or roof glazing, held in position by means of a load-bearing system fabricated from profiled rails to which the insulating glass panels consisting of glass plates disposed at a small distance apart from one another are positively attached by retaining members.
A fastening of this type is already known from the German Patent Specification DE-PS 34 39 436, in which the insulating glass e. panels have, around their border regions, U-shaped profiled lb rails, which are peripherally or sectionally open towards the 0000 0 0 S 0° outside, inserted between their glass plates to provide means for 0 00 °o0 o" engaging with the flanges of the retaining members. The facade- 0 oo or roof-joints which are defined by two adjacent insulating glass o0°, panels are rendered leak-proof by means of a sealing compound introduced between the edges of the outer glass plates of these insulating glass panels.
000 00 C o00° Furthermore, externally flush-mounted glass facades and roof glazing are known in which the insulating glass panels are a"o affixed to the load-bearing members, which are rigidly attached to the building structure, by means of silicone adhesive.
SotIn botn the foregoing instances, the sealing- and the adhesiveprocedures must be carried out at the actual building site. The affixing of the insulating glass panels with adhesive to the load-bearing members requires a great deal of careful work and, whereas the sealing compound does not provide the actual means of retention for the glass panels, it must ensure that the joints between them are leak-proof.
The object of the present invention is to provide a design for a fastening of the type initially referred to so that the outer plates of the insulating glass panels which form the outer wall or the roof glazing can be positively installed at the building site in the joints of the facade and/or roof without the need for adhesives and/or sealing compounds.
2 According to the present invention there is provided fastening for insulating glass panels of an external wall or roof glazing, held in position by means of a load-bearing system fabricated from profiled rails to which the insulating glass panels consisting of glass plates disposed at a small distance apart from one another are positively attached by retaining members, wherein the outer plate of each insulating glass panel has a peripheral step which starts from the edge surface of said panel, where the step surfaces, of adjacent insulating glass panels which delimit a facade- or root-joint, face e towards and are flush with each other and the flanges of one t or more profiled retaining member(s), which is/are attached to ccC the load-bearing system, engage in the steps.
C..C CBecause, in accordance with an embodiment of the Spresent invention, the outer plates of the insulating glass SC panels are provided with a peripheral step and since the retaining members attached to the load-bearilg system engage in this step, the outer plates are mechanically and positively locked into position to ensure that they cannot accidentally fall out if it should happen that an oiter plate became i loosened from its union with the other functional components of the insulating glass panels.
C. In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the profiled retaining members which are preferably fabricated from metal, aluminium in particular, are bolted to the load-bearing d system and are enclosed in a sealing means so that any contact LC between glass and metal in the region of the fastening is prevented.
In order to keep the dimensions of the facade- or roof-joints as small as possible, it is expedient to configure the insulating glass panels in such a manner that the peripheral step of the oQuter plates projects beyond the peripheral outer border of the inner plate.
Further characteristics and features of the invention are described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a horizontal section showing the fastening of two insulating glass panels to a profiled stanchion, -7 Fig. 2 is a variation of the design shown in Fig. li Fig. 3 is the arrangement of sash-bar profiles in relation to te profiled stanchions of the load-bearing system and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through another example of embodiment in which the insulating glass panels are provided with a peripheral framework.
In the examples of embodiment depicted in the drawings, each of the insulating glass panels 1 of the external wall or roof glazing includes an inner plate 2 and an outer plate 3. There is a spacing member 4 located between the outer plate 3 and the IP inner plate 2. The outer plate 3 is joined to the inner plate 2 o by means of an adhesive layer In the examples of embodiment depicted in the drawings, the outer r. plate 3 is fabricated as a laminated safety plate and consists of two glass plates 6 and 7 which are joined together by means of a transparent adhesive sheet-film 8 or by means of a transparent casting resin. The external glass plate 6 is smaller C than the internal glass plate 7 so that together they form a S peripheral step 9 which starts from the edge surface 10 of the outer plate 3. The height (riser) of the step 9 is determined by Lta the width of the edge of the external glass plate 6 plus the thickness of the adhesive sheet-film 8, whereas the width (tread) of the step corresponds to the distance by which the edge of the S internal glass plate 7 projects beyond the edge of the external glass plate 6.
In a variant of the construction of the insulating glass panels as described in the foregoing, the possibility exists for the outer plate 3 to consist of a single thick sheet of glass with the peripheral step moulded-on originally or formed by subsequent grinding.
In the examples of embodiment depicted in the drawings, the peripheral step 9 of the outer plate 3 projects beyond the perimeter of the inner plate 2 of each insulating glass panel.
In the case of the embodiments shown in Fig. 1 and 2, the insulating glass panels 1 are seated against sealing strips 11 I r 4 which are anchored by means of a beading 12 in an undercut groove 13 in the profiled stanchion 14.
It may be seen from Fig. 3 that the load-bearing system can have profiled sash-bars 15 in addition to the profiled stanchions 14, with said sash-bars being furnished with undercut anchoring grooves 16 for the sealing strips 17. Not only the profiled stanchions, but also the profiled sash-bars are provided with centrally-located internally-threaded blind holes 18, 19 respectively for the screwing in of fastening bolts. A channel o Q 22 is formed between the web 20, which attaches the threaded bolt 0 0 0 holder 18 to the stanchion 14, and the wall webs 21, which attach oa° o the members with the undercut anchoring groove 13 for the sealing 0 0oo I °oooo° strips.4t= to said stanchion, to allow for any seepage water to o0 drain away from the space behind the joints.
In the case of the profiled sash-bar 15, the inner border webs 23 which define the anchoring grooves 16 and the lateral strips Q04o 24 of the threaded bolt holder 19, also form channels 25 for draining away of any seepage water.
In Fig. 3, the overlapping region between two profiled sash-bars 15 and a profiled stanchion 14 is indicated by dot-dash lines.
The profiled sash-bars 15 have a rectangular cross-section hollow C, space located behind the base 26 of the anchoring grooves 16 and the base of the channels 25 and, after removal of the sealing strips 11 in the region of the ends of the sash-bars, they are placed with their base 26 on top of the side webs 27 of the anchoring grooves 13 of the profiled stanchion 14 so that any seepage water which collects in the channels 25 of the sash-bar can flow into the channels 22 of the profiled stanchion 14.
So that the front faces of the sealing strips 11 and 17 of the profiled stanchion 14 and the profiled sash-bar 15 respectively wi.1l together form a common support plane for the insulating glass panels, the sealing strips 17 in the profiled sash-bar are no'c as thick as the sealing strips 11 in the profiled stanchion 14, as may be clearly seen in cross-section in Fig. 3.
With the type of fastening depicted in Fig. 1, there is a T-shaped profiled retaining member 28 which is fabricated from metal, preferably from aluminium, inserted into the recess formed by the steps 9 around the peripheries of two adjacent insulating glass panels 1. This profiled retaining member 28 has a groove with a trapezium-shaped cross-section of which the slopes of the opposite sides correspond to the slope of the truncated conical head 29 of the countersunk fastening bolt 30. The bottom 31 of the groove has holes drilled through it to allow for insertion of the shafts of the fastening bolts 0o a The profiled retaining member 28 and also the portions of the 0°o° screw-threaded shafts of the fastening bolts 30 which are o o< situated in the region of the outer plate 3 are enclosed within 0O a profiled sealing strip 32 which has an outer flat side 33 0 o j0o extending over the whole width of the joint between the panels.
°0 0 On the underside of this flat cover 33 there is at least one 0 0 a projecting detent bead 34 which can be force-fitted into a 0,0, matching groove in the outside face of the profiled retaining member 28 to hold the sealing strip 32 firmly in position O 0 The sealing strip 32 extends over the whole width of the stepped i c recess between adjacent outer plates and it has a cross-section of decreased thickness on its inner end which faces towards the load-bearing system. At the appropriate locations, this
C
C thinner portion 35 is pierced by the shafts of the fastening bolts 30 which are screwed into the internally screw-threaded holes 18 of the profiled stanchion 14.
The sealing strip 32 is preferably fabricated from elastic silicone material. It can be manufactured with a colour which will stand out clearly against the glass plates so that a decorative effect can be produced by the coloured sealing strips 33.
In the case of the fastening in accordance with Fig. 2, a profiled retaining member, 20 with a rectangular cross-section is employed and this is likewise fabricated from metal, preferably from aluminium, and this is affixed by means of counterOunk-head bolts 36 to the profiled stanchion 14. The profiled retaining member 25 must be provided with countersunk holes to receive the heads of the bolts. The profiled retaining member 35 and e associated portion of the fastening bolts are enclosed within a profiled sealing strip 37 which is preferably fabricated from an elastic silicone material. On the underside of this flat cover 38 there is at least one projecting detent bead 39 which can be force-fitted into a matching groove in the outside face of the profiled retaining member 35 to hold the sealing strip 37 firmly in position.
From the diagrammatic representations it will be seen that the 0 profiled retaining member is provided with detent grooves 40 on 0000 oq both sides of its front surface so that with a corresponding o o configuration of detent lugs on the underside of thR cover it is possible to achieve a secure fixing of the profiled sealing strip o 000 a along both sides.
In this embodiment also the sealir .trip has a cross-section 41 of decreased thickness on its inner end, and this thinner portion S must be pierced by the shafts of the fastening bolts 36. The sleeve 42 at the base of the sealing strip which projects 2Qi. downwards prevents the internal glass plate of the outer plate from coming into direct contact with the metal fastening bolt.
In the case of the example of embodiment depicted in Fig. 4, there are two L-shaped profiled retaining members 44 provided in each joint region 43 and these members each have a limb 45 which runs parallel to the plane of the outer surface of the insulating glass panel and which engages in the step around the periphery of the associated outer plate 3. The profiled retaining members 44 are held in position by bolts which are not depicted and which are screwed into the outer profiled member 9 of a heat-insulated profiled framework 47a which is supported against the inner plate 2 of the insulating glass panel 1 by way of the shaped Ilexible sealing strip 48.
Outside its fastening region, the profiled retaining member 44 is enclosed in a sealing cover 46 which is held firmly in position by means of projecting lugs 47 which are force-fitted Urinto corresponding grooves on opposite sides of the profiled retaining member 44.
