Also disclosed herein is a vehicle as described above, provided with means for implementing a protection method as described above.
The invention will be better understood upon reading the following description, provided solely as an example and done in reference to the drawings, in which:
- figure 1 is a perspective view of the front of a vehicle, before a frontal impact with an upright pedestrian;
- figure 2 is a side view of the front of the vehicle of figure 1, before a frontal impact;
- figure 3 is a perspective view of the front of the vehicle of figure 1, following a detection of a frontal impact or detection of a pedestrian presence;
- figure 4 is a side view of the front of the vehicle of figure 1, following the detection of a frontal impact or detection of a pedestrian presence;
- figure 5 is a side view of the front of the vehicle figure 1, following the detection of a frontal impact or detection of a pedestrian presence on the ground; and
- figure 6 is a side view of the front of the vehicle of figure 1, following the detection of a frontal impact or detection of a pedestrian presence.
The vehicle 10 shown in figures 1 and 2 is a rail vehicle of the train or tram, designed to move along an axis 11. The vehicle 10 includes a front part 12, forming the front of said vehicle. The front part 12 in particular comprises a windshield 13, optionally provided with a windshield wiper 14. The windshield wiper 14 may be integrated at the bottom, top or side of the windshield.
The vehicle 10 is equipped with a device 15 for protecting an obstacle 16 in case of frontal impact with the vehicle 10. The type of obstacle considered is in particular a pedestrian 16.
The device 15 includes a bumper 17, also called fairing. The bumper 17 preferably protrudes toward the front of the vehicle 10.
The bumper 17 is equipped with a device 18 for detecting an impact or presence in

-5 front of the vehicle, diagrammatically shown in figure 2. The detection device 18 is able to detect, by contact or without contact, an obstacle in front of the vehicle. The device 18 is for example an electronic device including contact sensors, for example pressure sensors, or contactless sensors, for example infrared or ultrasound sensors. In order to optimize the detection speed of a frontal impact, the sensors are preferably situated in front of the bumper 17.
Preferably, the bumper 17 is situated at the bottom of the front part 12, so as to collide as a priority with the legs of the pedestrian 16 and not with vital regions, such as the head or ribs, and controlling the levels of trauma to the knees.
The bumper 17 comprises a hood 19 situated in front of the vehicle 10, below the windshield 13. The hood 19 is for example formed by a fairing or by a strip bearing headlights. In a normal movement situation of the vehicle 10, the hood 19 is in a closed position, shown in figures 1 and 2. In the closed position, the hood 19 forms a continuous surface with the windshield 13.
Alternatively, the hood does not form a continuous surface with the windshield, the hood for example being positioned in front relative to the windshield.
The hood 19 is able to move toward an open position. Relative to the closed position, the hood 19 in the open position is far from the front part 12 toward the front of the vehicle 10. In the embodiment described here and shown in figures 3, 4 and 5 in the open position, the hood 19 is connected to a means for pivoting the top of the hood 19 forward. This means for example comprises hinges.
The hood 19 comprises an opening device, such as a spring cylinder associated with a latch that keeps the hood in the closed position. The detection device 18 is able to execute a program according to which the latch opens in case of detection of an impact or pedestrian presence at the bumper 17, triggering the passage of the hood 19 to the open position.
The bumper 17 also comprises a flap 20 situated at the front of the vehicle 10, in the lower part of the front part 12, or lower than the hood 19. In a normal movement

-6situation of the vehicle 10, the flap 20 is in a closed position, shown in figures 1 and 2. In the closed position, the flap 20 forms a continuous surface with a lower surface 21 positioned below the front part 12 of the vehicle 10.
The flap 20 is able to move toward an open position, shown in figures 3, 4 and 5. Relative to the closed position, the flap 20 in the open position is moved away from the surface 21 in the downward direction. In the embodiment described here, the flap 20 is connected to a means for downward pivoting of the front of the flap 20.
Different example embodiments are possible, in combination or not, for triggering the opening of the hood 19 and the triggering of the opening of the flap 20, following the detection of a frontal impact or detection of a pedestrian presence by the detection device 18.
In a first example embodiment, the opening of the hood 19 is triggered before the opening of the flap 20. The flap 20 is for example equipped with a spring cylinder system that triggers the downward pivoting of said flap, after releasing a fastening point by the opening of the hood 19.
In a second example embodiment, the opening of the flap 20 is triggered before the opening of the hood 19.
In a third example embodiment, the opening of the flap 20 is triggered substantially at the same time as the opening of the hood 19. The flap 20 and/or the hood 19 are for example equipped with a spring cylinder system that triggers the movement of said flap and said hood by releasing a latch.
After the flap 20 is opened, it is kept bearing on the ground or close to the ground until the vehicle 10 is immobilized.
Other embodiments may, however, be considered.
If a frontal impact of the vehicle 10 with a pedestrian 16 is detected, or a pedestrian presence is detected, the opening of the flap 20 is intended to obstruct a space between the vehicle 10 and the ground to prevent the pedestrian from passing below the vehicle, and in

-7particular below the front part 12 of the vehicle 10. Thus, no part of the pedestrian's body 16 can pass below the vehicle 10, which reduces the risks of serious injury and facilitates the extrication of the pedestrian 16.
Preferably, the flap 20 has a protection surface 22. The surface 22 is for example formed by a net fastened to the rear of the flap 20 and contained inside the vehicle 10 in the closed position of the flap. When the flap is in the open position, the surface 22 is deployed in a space comprised between the open and closed positions of the flap, so as to fill in the open space between the flap 20 and the hood 19.
The device 15 further includes an impact energy absorbing means 23, able to deploy by inflating if an impact or pedestrian presence is detected. The means 23 is visible in the deployed position in figures 3, 4 and 5. The means 23 is preferably an air pillow or airbag, comprising a gas generator activated by the opening of the hood 19, after the device 18 detects an impact or a pedestrian presence. For example, according to a known system, the actuator opening the hood 19 sends an electric signal to a pyrotechnic device that ignites a chemical reagent, generating inflation gases.
When the hood 19 is in the closed position, the airbag 23 is in a position folded behind the hood 19. When the hood is in the open position, the airbag 23 deploys above the space comprised between the open and closed positions of the hood 19. The airbag in the deployed position, as shown in figures 3, 4 and 5, is situated in front of the windshield 13 and in front of the windshield wiper 14. The airbag 23 deploys over all or part of the width of the windshield 13.
In one preferred embodiment, the protection device 15 includes only the flap 20 as active protection element, the hood 19 being stationary and the device 15 not including an airbag 23.
In a second embodiment, the protection device 15 includes only the flap 20 and the hood 19 has active protection elements, the device 15 not including an airbag 23.
In a third embodiment, the protection device 15 includes the flap 20, the hood 19 and the airbag 23 as active protection elements.

-8An operating method of the device 15 according to the third embodiment above will now be described, using the example of an obstacle of the pedestrian type. The vehicle 10 is provided with means for implementing said method, such as a program stored in the device 18.
The implementation of the method is triggered by the detection of an impact or presence between the bumper 17 of the vehicle 10 and the pedestrian 16. The detection is done by the device 18, which triggers the opening of the hood 19 toward the front of the vehicle 10. The opening of the hood 19 is intended to eject the pedestrian 16 forward to distance him from the front part 12. In particular, the opening of the hood 19 seeks to distance the head of the pedestrian 16 from the windshield 13 and/or the windshield wiper 14, which present risks of serious injury.
The opening of the hood 19 causes the deployment of the airbag 23, above a space comprised between the open and closed positions of the hood 19. The airbag 23 thus becomes placed between the head of the pedestrian 16 and the windshield 13, offering additional protection to that pedestrian.
The opening of the hood 19 further causes the opening of the flap 20 toward the bottom of the vehicle 10 to prevent the pedestrian 16 from being dragged under the vehicle.
During normal operation, the method can trigger emergency braking of the vehicle as of the detection of the presence or impact, or as of opening of the flap 20 and/or the hood 19. Preferably, the detection device 18 is active only for non-zero speeds of the vehicle 10.
In case of malfunction, for example in case of incorrect operation of the latch of the hood 19, the method can trigger emergency braking of the vehicle simultaneously with the opening of the flap 20.
Before restarting the vehicle, it is necessary to perform certain maintenance operations, such as: restoring and replacing airbag 23, the latter being easy to place without tools; returning the flap 20 to its position, potentially replacing it in case of deformation or

-9breakage; returning the hood 19 to its position, potentially replacing it; rearming the detection device 18.
According to one embodiment that is not shown, the surface 22 includes an additional airbag able to deploy between the hood 19 and the flap 20, after opening the flap 20, in order to protect a pedestrian who has fallen on the ground.
According to another embodiment shown in figure 6 in the open position, the hood 19 and the flap 20 are stationary relative to one another and are able to translate diagonally relative to the front part 12, toward the front and toward the ground.
According to an alternative that is not shown to the embodiment of figure 6, the hood 19 and the flap 20 are not stationary relative to one another and are able to translate, independently of one another, from the closed position to the open position.
Throughout this specification and the claims which follow, unless the context requires otherwise, the word comprise, and variations such as comprises and comprising, will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated integer or step or group of integers or steps but not the exclusion of any other integer or step or group of integers or steps.
