Abstract

The machine tool to give a progressive slit cutting action in flat workpieces, and especially sheet plates, has a multi-stroke operation with a cutting tool assembly (16) powered by a stroke drive with a stroke control. The forward and reverse workpiece movements are also under separate controls, which determine the working of the cutting tool. The maximum length (A) of the reverse movement, against the forward movement (32), is the slit length between the trailing lateral cutters (24,27) of the cutting tools (9,13) in the slit direction and the trailing lateral limit of the previous slit. A backing stroke is executed before the final stroke to finish the slit.
