EMI1.1

EMI1.1
Calcium bisulfite liquor is usually made from lime and sulfur dioxide. The required limestone is burned and the caustic potash produced is treated with sulfur dioxide in an aqueous suspension until it is dissolved. It is also known that some metal sulphides deposit sulfur with sulfurous acid, with thiosulphate and hydrogen sulphide also being formed.
It has now been found that calcium sulfur reacts rapidly with an aqueous solution of sulfur dioxide which must be kept permanently saturated, with the formation of soluble calcium bisulfite and simultaneous separation of sulfur. The latter can be separated from the solution in a known manner. However, in the process with excess sulfur dioxide, some hydrogen sulfide escapes, which can then be reacted by passing it through a heated contact tube to form sulfur.
However, as was further found, these difficulties can be avoided if sulfur aleium is not introduced into aqueous sulfuric acid, but into concentrated calcium disulphite liquor with constant introduction of sulfur dioxide. This prevents the volatilization of hydrogen sulfide and the sulfur is used quantitatively. It is then expedient to add the sulphurealeium, finely slurried in as much water as is necessary to dissolve the resulting bisulphite. The reaction can, however, also be carried out in the heat and under pressure. It is advisable to connect a number of reaction apparatuses one behind the other.
The calcium sulfide can be used for the process from gypsum with charcoal or another reducing agent
EMI1.2
is reacted with sulfur aleium.
