Description

Method for drying patent leather or the like.

In patent leather drying, it is known to expose the oven-dry leather to the simultaneous action of suitably ultraviolet light and ammonia vapors for the purpose of further drying. This procedure is practically carried out in such a way that one brings some ammonia into the air-filled space and then exposes the leather. The increased adhesion of the patent leather achieved here was attributed to a neutralization of the acidic components of the lacquer substance that occurred during the oxidation.

Further tests have now shown that the ammonia is split into nitrogen and hydrogen as the end product during exposure. However, this degradation takes place via intermediate products (hydrazine), which is why these, like the more alkaline substituted ammonia, can be used particularly favorably for the purposes of drying patent leather. The ozone, which is known to have an adverse effect on drying and which is formed during exposure as a result of the presence of air in the drying room, reacts with the hydrogen split off from the ammonia derivatives in statu nascendi into water and oxygen and disappears completely.
