Process for the preparation of a mixture of salts of lower fatty acids.
The purpose of the method is to obtain lower fatty acids in the form of salts from crushed wood, such as is available in the form of sawdust, waste wood, wood pulp for cellulose production, etc.
The method is based on the observation that the formyl-. Acetyl, propionyl and butyric acid groups can be split off from dilute alkalis, such as potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, ammonia solution, soda solution or calcium hydroxide solution, with the formation of the salts of the corresponding acids, even at normal temperature and under normal pressure.
This cleavage succeeds z. B. with an alkali solution 1: 200U.

is filtered off and the solution, again saturated with calcium hydroxide, is added to fresh wood. This process is repeated until the lye is saturated with salts of lower fatty acids at the given temperature.
On the one hand, to be able to fully utilize the wood and, on the other hand, to obtain a lye that is as concentrated as possible, it is advantageous to use a diffusion

or the cells are charged without the addition of kinking agents and the alkaline solution between the individual cells is saturated with calcium hydroxide. The battery is put into operation by dividing water. If a Zolle is exhausted, it is emptied, loaded with fresh material and connected to the end of the battery. The saline solution circulating here is evaporated. The residue consists mainly of acetic acid lime (and traces of lime salts of homologous fatty acids.
The remaining percentage consists of unknown substances of an organic nature.

According to the inventor's experiments, the yields of acetic acid and homologues which can be achieved by this process are 2 to 3% of the weight of spruce wood, 5 to 60% for beech wood, and about 5 to 6% of the weight of dry wood for beech wood.
It has also been found that, instead of chopped up wood, other suitable plant parts which are available to industry, e.g. B. autumn-dry leaves, bowls, hay, straw and the like. Can process in the same way. Tests have shown that you can z. B. can achieve yields of lower fatty acids from beechwood blanks and hay, which amount to 3 to 4% of the weight of the air-dry starting material.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A method for the preparation of a mixture of salts of lower fatty acids, that one treats crushed wood with lime water or other alkaline solutions at ordinary temperature or for the purpose of accelerating the reaction with moderate warming and from the here obtained alkalis the fatty acid salts or the acids in known way wins.
