Die bekannte Ursache dieser Erscheinung besteht in der Bildung von Salpetersäure, hervorgerufen durch elektrische Entladungen (Überspannungen), wodurch, infolge der im elektrischen Leiter auftretenden Wärme begünstigt, der Zerfall der Baumwollfaser eintritt.
Dieser Zerfall der Baumwoll- (vegetabilischen) Faser kann als Karbonisationsprozess
