If the filter is closed, that is to say working under the pressure of the pipe water column, the compressed air can be generated in the compressor p immediately after the washing period has ended when the next filter period is initiated. The air is then pushed back out of the room m and through the line I into the compressor p by the water flowing in under pressure. In this way the same compressed air is always used again. If the filter is open, however, the air in the compressor can be compressed by means of pressurized water before being washed out each time, by removing the water still in it by means of the tap h, allowing air to enter through k and opening the pressurized water tap i.
If there is a larger filter battery, a single compressor is sufficient. In general, the device allows the construction of larger batteries in a particularly advantageous manner, in which case the shafts c for the waste water are then expediently not installed in the middle of each filter, but rather between two adjacent filters.
