Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Method of weighing silk.
The method described below represents an embodiment and a significant improvement of patent no. 37127, in that it results in a considerable simplification of the working process and a significant saving in chemicals (tartaric acid) is achieved.
While the process of the parent patent specification is followed by the treatment in the well-known tin chloride-zinc sulphate bath and the acid treatment, according to the improved method, the treatment with tin chloride-zinc sulphate and the acid treatment take place simultaneously in one operation by adding the acid to the weight bath itself. An organic acid or a mixture of an organic and an inorganic acid can be used for this purpose.
Tartaric acid or a mixture of tartaric acid with hydrochloric acid is particularly suitable for this purpose.
EMI1.1
I. The silk degummed and washed in the usual way is treated in a bath consisting of a mixture of tin chloride solution of 300 Be. and a zinc sulfate solution of 300 Be. and to which so much tartaric acid is added that a sample of the bath is poured into water, does not cause turbidity. To this bath, 2 liters of chemically pure hydrochloric acid are added to 100 liters to prevent the tin chloride from hydrolyzing.
2. The silk is treated as described in 1., but the addition of hydrochloric acid is omitted and 1 to 1.5 kg of crystallized tartaric acid are added to the zinc sulfate-zinc chloride tartaric acid bath for every 100 liters.
The silk, freed from the excess salt solution in the usual way, is then washed with pure water in a fixing bath of sodium phosphate of 5-8 Be. introduced at about 750 C, centrifuged and washed. The weighting process can be repeated up to the desired degree of weighting.
The weighted silk retains almost the same elasticity as in the raw state; the thread becomes voluminous, supple, and shiny.
