Due to the increased temperature, the carbon-rich intermediates in question are completely converted into water-soluble compounds. The still compact fine coal particles are consequently permeated with the alkali compounds in the dry state after calcination. Their still firmly coherent structure is loosened so that with the following dry grinding a complete disintegration is brought about in a very short time
During the subsequent treatment of the extremely fine powder with water, the alkali compounds dissolve to form a black-brown liquid. The carbon-rich compounds are completely eliminated from this solution in an unusually high degree of fineness as flaky precipitates by acids. These amorphous substances now penetrate the previously undissolved coal particles, which are present in a very high degree of fineness, in such a way that after washing, drying and dividing the mass, a blackness with a completely amorphous appearance and high opacity is obtained.
In order to achieve a blackness of particular quality, the solution obtained from the calcined mass by leaching with water can also be separated from the undissolved coal particles and then treated with dilute acid, whereupon the dissolved substances precipitate in fine flakes. These are washed out with water and can then be ground to the finest powder after drying.
The undissolved parts can then be ground separately from the loosened parts to a fine blackness.
PATENT APPROACH:
1. A process for the production of blackness from coal by treating the latter with caustic alkalis in a mill and subsequent calcination, characterized in that the grist is as it comes from the mill, so without prior separation from the alkaline
Lye, calcined, the calcined mass is mixed with water, treated with dilute acid. the insoluble components are separated from the solution, dried and ground.
