the air columns coming from the air compressor, not shown, are moved back and forth.
There are also hand-operated devices provided to do just that.
To be able to regulate the pressure of the air in the rear chamber. These consist of a line which leads from one of the compressed air pipes 27, 28, in the present case from the pipe 28, to the annular space 15 of the rear chamber, which in the present example is formed by a short connecting pipe 29, which on the one hand is in the pipe 28 opens and on the other hand in the rear chamber. A manually adjustable valve 30 is provided in this tube so that the amount of air that can pass from the compressed air tube 28 into the interior of the rear chamber in order to increase the pressure in this chamber up to a certain level is regulated in a very precise manner can be.
In practice it has been found to be desirable that the rear chamber has a total volume of approximately twice the volume that is displaced by the rear piston rod, so that when the rear piston rod is moved into the chamber, up to the limit of its rearward movement about half the volume of the rear piston rod chamber is still empty.
The mean pressure in this chamber above atmospheric pressure depends on the amount of air that escapes along the sealing ring 23 and on the amount of air that goes into the outer atmosphere through the air outlet screw described above.
By providing a line from the tube 28 to the rear chamber for the piston rod and inserting a manually operated valve into this line, the level of air pressure in the rear chamber can be adjusted to the point that is required when the Piston achieves the best effect.
Due to the design and arrangement of the parts described in this way, a powerful blow of the tool can be achieved, since the compression of the air in the rear chamber during the reverse movement of the working piston acts like a strong elastic spring which throws the piston rod against the rock. This force works together with the usual pressure on the piston rear surface.
If this air spring, which presses against the rear piston rod, were not present, the working piston would only receive a strong to-and-fro movement with a relatively low impact force.
It can be seen that by using the manually operated valve in the line leading from the one pressure pipe to the rear chamber, the greatest accuracy can be achieved in setting the pressure in this chamber, whereby the best effect of the pusher can always be achieved.
Of course, this manually operated valve is only very slightly open and small changes in the passage opening of this valve have a significant effect on the operation of the tool.
