Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

<Desc / Clms Page number 1>
Process for the preparation of glyoxylic acid.
Glyoxylic acid has not previously been technically accessible. We have found that it is produced in the simplest way and in very good yield if oxalic acid is reduced at the cathode. Although oxalic acid was electrolytically reduced earlier, the only reduction product found was glycolic acid. Glyoxylic acid, on the other hand, is almost exclusively formed when working with lead or mercury electrodes, using dilute sulfuric acid as the electrolyte and using moderate temperatures.
It is also necessary to use diaphragms or some other apparatus to make it more difficult for the oxalic acid to reach the anode, and finally to monitor the formation of glyoxylic acid and the electrolysis by titration, for example with a solution of phenylhydrazine
