Es hat sich nun gezeigt, dass Gemische aus halogenierten Phenolen bzw. deren Abkömmlingen und karbozyklischen Säuren oder deren Derivaten das Wachstum von Mikroorganismen auf technischen Materialien ganz aussergewöhnlich wirksam verhindern bzw. unterdrücken. Unter den halogenierten Phenolen sind Polychlorphenole, Polychlorkresole und Polychlornaphthole bzw. deren Alkaliverbindungen besonders brauchbar, und vor allem in Verbindung mit Benzoesäure oder substituierten Benzoesäuren, wie Chlorbenzoesäuren, Oxybenzoesäuren sowie deren Alkylestern und Salzen zeigen sie sich besonders wirksam.'Vorzugsweise verwendet man Gemische aus Trichlorphenol, Trichlorphenolazetat oder Tetrachlorphenol mit p-Oxybenzoesäureestern ; indessen kann man statt der freien Phenole deren Alkaliverbindungen oder Äther anwenden ;

Method for suppressing the growth of microorganisms.
The invention relates to a method for suppressing the growth of microorganisms.
As is known, a number of technical materials, in particular those which contain constituents of vegetable or animal origin, such as glue, gelatine, finishing compositions, roller compositions, fabrics, yarns, vegetable tanning extracts, cork, etc., form one for the growth of microorganisms such as Fungi and bacteria, favorable breeding grounds and are easily attacked by them.
It has now been shown that mixtures of halogenated phenols or their derivatives and carbocyclic acids or their derivatives prevent or suppress the growth of microorganisms on industrial materials in an extremely effective manner. Among the halogenated phenols, polychlorophenols, polychlorophenols and polychloronaphthols or their alkali compounds are particularly useful, and especially in conjunction with benzoic acid or substituted benzoic acids, such as chlorobenzoic acids, oxybenzoic acids and their alkyl esters and salts, they are particularly effective. Mixtures of trichlorophenol are preferably used , Trichlorophenol acetate or tetrachlorophenol with p-oxybenzoic acid esters; however, one can use their alkali compounds or ethers instead of the free phenols;
Likewise, the p-oxybenzoic acid esters can be replaced by the corresponding alkali compounds or ethers.
The mixtures have the advantage of being considerably more soluble in water than the components alone; in particular, the sparingly soluble, multiply halogenated phenols go into solution in the presence of carbocyclic acids, their esters and salts. Their effectiveness against microorganisms, fungi and bacteria is also significantly higher than can be calculated from the total effect of the individual substances.
For example, the concentrations at which the growth of Penicillium glaucum is suppressed on agar-agar culture media are

These mixtures can also be used together with others in the preservation of decomposable materials, such as B. formaldehyde, formaldehyde-releasing substances, fluorides, boric acid, etc. are used; However, it should be expressly emphasized that they are not suitable for the preservation of substances that are used for pleasure purposes or for pharmaceutical purposes.
The form of their application depends on the material to be protected. Liquid materials
