B in Fig. 1.

Silencer.
The invention relates to an exhaust silencer for internal combustion engines, in particular for motor vehicles, which combines particular lightness and smallness with good effect. In the case of silencers, it is known to divide the gas flow into numerous partial flows and to deflect them.
The essence of the invention lies in the fact that of two parallel plates that are adjustable in their mutual spacing and that form a housing, one is provided with numerous inlet lugs for the exhaust gases flowing through the exhaust pipe into a chamber, and the other stubs in cup-like attachments Plate protrude, between which approaches holes are arranged for the exit of the gases.
In the drawing, the subject matter of the invention is shown in an exemplary embodiment in FIG. 1 in axial section. Fig. 2 shows a section through part of the silencer along the line J.-. B in Fig. 1.
The exhaust pipe 1 opens into a flat cylindrical chamber 2. The bottom 3 of this chamber forms a plate which has numerous bores 4 which continue into cylindrical or conically widening stubs 5. Opposite the mouths there is a plate 6 with cup-shaped, cylindrical or conically widening extensions 8, which catch each of the partial gas flows, reverse them and leak back against the plate 3 so that they have to flow off over the edge of the cup outside the same and through holes 7 in the plate 6 escape. The dimensions can be selected such that the ring cross section 8 between the connecting pieces and lugs (FIG. 2) is larger than that of the bores 4 and the bores 7 again have a larger section than the ring cross sections 8.
As a result, with each deflection there is a relaxation of the gases1 which favors the noise reduction. The plate 6 could now have nozzles attached to the bores 7 and again be opposed to a further plate with cup-shaped attachments so that the deflection of the partial gas flows could be repeated as often as desired. The depth of the interlocking of the connecting pieces 5 and cups 8 is essential for the good effect.
The further embodiment of the invention consists in that the distance between the plates 3 and 6 is made variable, for example by the fact that the plate 6 is designed like a box cover, encompasses the chamber 2 (not shown) and by means of adjusting screws or the like at any distance from the plate 3 can be determined.
