Abstract

Un método para tratar fibras de vidrio fibroso para aumentar su resistencia al calor, la fibra es tratada con una mezcla de ácidos que contiene por lomenos 15% de ácido sulfurico durante un período de tiempo suficiente para aumentar el punto deablandamiento de la fibra a por lo menos 1000°C. Seobtiene una fibra de vidrio capaz de resistir temperaturas superiores a 1.037°C tratando una fibra de vidrio, preferentemente una fibra de vidrio E.Primeramente, la fibra de vidrio se lixivia con ácidos seleccionados y luego se trata la fibra lixiviada con materiales organometálicos de baja viscosidad,tales como una dispersion de una emulsion de agua en aceite, de bajo peso molecular, de dimetil polisiloxano. La fibra se usa para aplicacionestales como embutirla en un material de recubrimiento activo resistente al fuego o embutirla en una superficie de un material de poliolefina o materialplástico compuesto como por ejemplo, una lámina de polipropileno. La fibra de vidrio tratada puede utilizarse como componente unico o junto con materialesresistentes al fuego o retardadores del fuego para mejorar aun más sus propiedades de resistencia al fuego.
