March 31, 1943, No. 544, [Class 83 (iii)] In a turret or capstan lathe the turret a has a series of annular serrations a<1> on its under face co-operating with similar serrations on the lathe saddle for indexing and locking purposes. A screwed pillar c engages a central recess in the turret and is rotatably mounted in a nut d secured in the saddle so that as the saddle is retracted after a working operation a finger g attached to a gear wheel f rotatable in the saddle engages a stop h on the lathe bed to rock the gear and thereby rotate an intermeshing gear e attached to the screw c and cause the turret to be raised clear of the serrations on the saddle. On further'retraction of the saddle a stop j on the bed engages one of a series of vertical pins i on the turret to cause a partial rotation thereof, the final indexed position being determined by the serrations a<1> when the turret is lowered again by engagement of a stationary stop p with a finger m on a gear wheel n meshing with the gear e. The Provisional Specification describes a modification in which the nut d is rotated by a lever thereon engaged by a fixed stop during retraction and advance of the saddle to raise and lower the turret.
