Abstract

682,793. Turrets. FRANCE, H. C. Feb. 21, 1951 [Feb. 27, 1950], No. 4990/50. Class 83 (iii). A multi-station tool turret comprises a block rotatable about a vertical spindle on a base, the upper portion of which has a quick pitch thread and is engaged by a nut which is held against axial movement with respect to the block but is rotatable relative thereto, and having means by which it is constrained to move with the block after predetermined movement in one direction so that the block can be raised, rotated, and lowered to engage dogs on the base and means for preventing rotation of the block whenever it has been rotated to a new tool position so that it can be lowered into that position. A tool-carrying turret block 1 is rotatable around a vertical hollow spindle 2 having at its upper end a quick-pitch thread 17 and secured to a slide or base 5 by a pillar bolt 7 and nut 8. A collar 18 with a handle 19 for rotating it has an internally threaded sleeve 18a to engage the threads on the spindle. The collar is connected by a ring 21 to be axially held but relatively rotatable with respect to the block 1. On anticlockwise rotation of the handle the block 1 is lifted clear of dogs 10 on the base but is held against rotation by a spring-pressed locating plunger 14 which has a bevelled end face and engages slots 12 in the sleeve at the indexed positions. As the block 1 is moved axially clear of the base dogs a further spring-pressed plunger 23 engages a notch in the lower face of the collar 18 and the latter and block are then constrained to move together, the plunger 14 being forced out of its slot. With continued anticlockwise movement the plunger 14 finally engages the next slot 12 corresponding to the next tool position. The handle is then rotated clockwise to tighten the block on to the locating dogs of the base. In a modification the plunger 14 is replaced by a plunger which engages recesses in the base and which is kept out of engagement during the initial anticlockwise movement by a spring- pressed latch engaging cam surfaces on the sleeve.
