Abstract

본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체는 금속탄화물 코팅층을 포함하는 제1 탄소층과, 상기 제1 탄소층에 접촉하며 금속탄화물 코팅층이 없는 제2 탄소층을 포함하며, 리튬-황 전지의 전극으로서 양극 및 음극에 사용 가능하다. 특히, 상기 금속탄화물 코팅층(제1 탄소층)이 리튬-황 전지의 분리막에서 먼 쪽에 위치함으로써, 상기 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는 전극을 양극으로 사용하는 경우 리튬폴리설파이드의 용출을 구조적으로 억제하며 황 함량을 높일 수 있고, 음극으로 사용하는 경우 리튬 이온의 확산 제한에 의한 전착을 억제하여 리튬 수지상 성장을 억제하는 효과가 있다.

Description

선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체, 이를 포함하는 전극, 이를 포함하는 리튬-황 전지 및 그 제조방법
본 발명은 리튬-황 전지에 관한 것으로, 자세하게는 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는 전극 및 이를 포함하는 리튬-황 전지에 관한 것이다.

리튬-황 전지(Li-S battery)는 이론상으로 높은 에너지 밀도(약 2,600 Whkg) 및 높은 비용량(약 1,675 mAh g-1)를 갖는 차세대 에너지 저장 시스템이다. 하지만, 충방전 사이클 동안 형성되는 중간체인 리튬폴리설파이드(LiPSs)가 전해질에 대해 높은 용해도를 가지며 열역학적으로 불리한 다단계 반응으로 인해 느린 반응성을 갖는 등 문제들이 있어 이론적 최대 용량을 발현시키지 못해 전지의 성능이 떨어지는 한계점이 있다. 이러한 문제를 극복하기 위한 노력으로, 탄소나노튜브(CNT), 그래핀, 메조포러스 탄소(mesoporous carbon) 등의 탄소기반 물질에 리튬폴리설파이드(LiPSs)의 흡착 및 전기화학적 전환을 촉진하는 활성 물질로서 금속 화합물 전기촉매(electrocatalyst)를 포함시키는 방법 등이 연구되어왔다. 그러나 더 높은 에너지 밀도를 갖는 전지의 개발을 위해 높은 황 로딩량을 갖는 양극을 개발하려는 시도가 활발히 진행되고 있다.
한편, 리튬-황 전지용 음극은 주로 리튬 이온의 탈착/전착이 반복되며 발생하는 불균일한 리튬 이온 이동 밀도로 인해 수지상 성장(dendrite)이 형성되며 셀이 단락되는 문제를 해결하기 위한 연구가 진행되고 있다.
본 발명은 상술한 문제를 해결하기 위하여 착안된 것으로, 본 발명의 바람직한 예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는 리튬-황 전지용 전극은, 양극으로 적용될 시 리튬폴리설파이드의 전해질로의 용출을 방지하여 높은 황 로딩량을 가지며, 음극으로 적용될 시 리튬 수지상 성장을 억제하는, 리튬-황 전지를 제공할 수 있다.
상기 기술적 과제를 달성하기 위해 본 발명의 바람직한 예에 따른 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체는, 금속탄화물 코팅층을 포함하는 제1 탄소층과, 상기 제1 탄소층에 접촉하며 금속탄화물 코팅층이 없는 제2 탄소층을 포함하며, 상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층은 복수의 기공을 포함하는 탄소기재인 것을 특징으로 할 수 있다.
상기 금속탄화물은 전이금속의 탄화물일 수 있다.
상기 전이금속은 몰리브덴(Mo), 텅스텐(W), 티타늄(Ti), 니켈(Ni), 바나듐(V), 아연(Zn), 코발트(Co) 및 구리(Cu)로 구성되는 군 중에서 선택되는 적어도 하나 이상일 수 있다.
상기 탄소기재는 탄소나노튜브, 탄소 섬유, 그래핀 섬유, 활성 탄소, 카본 블랙 및 이들의 유도체 중 적어도 하나 이상을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층은 각각 독립된 탄소기재가 적층된 것일 수 있다.
상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층은 하나의 일체화된 탄소기재일 수 있다.
상기 금속탄화물 코팅층은 상기 제1 탄소층에 형성된 복수의 기공 전부 또는 일부의 표면에 금속탄화물이 코팅된 것일 수 있다.
EDS(Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) 맵핑에 의해 상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층 중 제1 탄소층에만 비대칭적으로 금속산화물 코팅이 확인될 수 있다.
상기 기술적 과제를 달성하기 위해 본 발명의 바람직한 예에 따른 리튬-황 전지용 전극은, 상술한 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 전극은 양극 활물질로서 황을 더 포함하여 양극에 사용되며, 리튬폴리설파이드의 화학적 흡착과 전환 촉진을 통해 상기 리튬폴리설파이드의 용출을 억제할 수 있다.
상기 양극에서 상기 제1 탄소층이 리튬-황 전지의 분리막에서 먼 쪽에 위치할 수 있다.
상기 전극은 음극 활물질로서 리튬을 더 포함하여 음극에 사용되며, 리튬 이온의 확산 제한에 의한 전착을 억제하여 수지상 성장을 최소화할 수 있다.
상기 음극에서 상기 제1 탄소층이 리튬-황 전지의 분리막에서 먼 쪽에 위치할 수 있다.
상기 전극의 면적당 용랑은 16.75 내지 33.50 mAh/cm2일 수 있다.
상기 기술적 과제를 달성하기 위해 본 발명의 바람직한 예에 따른 리튬-황 전지는, 상술한 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는 전극을 포함하며 황의 환원 반응이 발생하는 양극;
상술한 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는 전극을 포함하며 상기 양극과 마주보도록 배치되어 리튬의 산화 반응이 발생하는 음극;
상기 양극과 상기 음극의 사이에 배치되며 리튬폴리설파이드의 이동을 억제하되 이온의 전달을 위한 분리막; 및
상기 양극과 음극 사이에 개재된 전해질;을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 양극과 음극에서 제1 탄소층은 상기 분리막에서 먼 쪽에 위치하도록 배치할 수 있다.
상기 리튬-황 전지의 양극 면적당 황 함량은 5 내지 10 mg/cm2일 수 있다.
상기 기술적 과제를 달성하기 위해 본 발명의 바람직한 예에 따른 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 제조방법은,
(a) 복수의 기공을 포함하는 탄소기재를 준비하는 단계; 및
(b) 상기 탄소기재에 금속을 함유하는 전구체 용액을 가한 뒤 탄화시켜 금속탄화물 코팅층을 형성하는 단계;를 포함하며,
(i) 상기 (b) 단계에서 상기 탄소기재의 일정 두께 영역에만 금속탄화물 코팅층을 형성시키거나, (ii) 상기 (b) 단계 이후에 코팅되지 않은 별도의 탄소기재를 적층시킴으로써, 일정 두께 영역 내지는 한 층에만 비대칭적으로 금속탄화물이 코팅된 것일 수 있다.
상기 (a) 단계는, (a-1) 탄소나노튜브, 탄소 섬유, 그래핀 섬유, 활성 탄소, 카본 블랙 및 이들의 유도체 중 적어도 하나 이상을 포함하는 탄소 재료 분말이 용매에 분산된 분산액을 준비하는 단계; 및
(a-2) 상기 분산액으로부터 상기 탄소 재료를 분리하고 건조하여 복수의 기공을 가지는 탄소 기재를 제조하는 단계; 를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 (b) 단계는, (b-1) 상기 탄소기재에 금속을 함유하는 전구체 용액을 적하하고 건조하여 상기 전구체 용액 내 용매를 증발시키는 단계; 및
(b-2) 불활성 기체 분위기 하에서 열처리하여 상기 금속을 탄화시키는 단계;를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 (b-1) 단계 이전에, 상기 탄소기재에 플라즈마를 가해 작용기를 생성하는 전처리 단계;를 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 (b-2) 단계에서 열처리 온도는 800 내지 1,000 ℃일 수 있다.
상기 (b) 단계에서 상기 금속은 몰리브덴이고 상기 금속탄화물은 몰리브데넘 탄화물일 수 있다.
상기 (b) 단계에서 상기 전구체는 헵타몰리브덴산 암모늄일 수 있다.
상기 (ii)의 경우에 금속탄화물이 코팅된 탄소기재와 코팅되지 않은 탄소기재는 물리적 압착과정을 통해 적층되는 것일 수 있다.
상기 물리적 압착과정은 롤링 프레스 머신을 통해 수행되는 것일 수 있다.
상기와 같은 본 발명에 따르면, 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체는 금속탄화물 코팅층을 포함하는 제1 탄소층과, 상기 제1 탄소층에 접촉하며 금속탄화물 코팅층이 없는 제2 탄소층을 포함하며, 리튬-황 전지의 전극으로서 양극 및 음극에 사용 가능하다. 특히, 상기 금속탄화물 코팅층(제1 탄소층)이 리튬-황 전지의 분리막에서 먼 쪽에 위치함으로써, 상기 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는 전극을 양극으로 사용하는 경우 리튬폴리설파이드의 용출을 구조적으로 억제하며 황 함량을 높일 수 있고, 음극으로 사용하는 경우 리튬 이온의 확산 제한에 의한 전착을 억제하여 리튬 수지상 성장을 억제하는 효과가 있다.
본 발명의 효과는 이상에서 언급한 것으로 제한되지 않으며, 명세서 전반의 기재로부터 통상의 기술자에게 명확하게 이해될 수 있으나 명시적으로 언급되지 않은 다른 효과들 역시 포함한다.

다른 정의가 없다면, 본 명세서에서 사용되는 모든 용어(기술 및 과학적 용어를 포함)는 본 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자에게 공통적으로 이해될 수 있는 의미로 사용될 수 있을 것이다. 또 일반적으로 사용되는 사전에 정의되어 있는 용어들은 명백하게 특별히 정의되어 있지 않는 한 이상적으로 또는 과도하게 해석되지 않는다. 본 명세서에서 사용된 용어는 실시 예들을 설명하기 위한 것이며 본 발명을 제한하고자 하는 것은 아니다. 본 명세서에서, 단수형은 문구에서 특별히 언급하지 않는 한 복수형도 포함한다.
명세서에서 사용되는 "포함한다 (comprises)" 및/또는 "포함하는 (comprising)"은 언급된 구성 요소, 단계, 동작 및/또는 소자는 하나 이상의 다른 구성 요소, 단계, 동작 및/또는 소자의 존재 또는 추가를 배제하지 않는다.
선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체, 이를 포함하는 전극 및 이를 포함하는 리튬-황 전지
도 1은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는 전극의 모식도이다.
도 1을 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체는 금속탄화물 코팅층을 포함하는 제1 탄소층과, 상기 제1 탄소층에 접촉하며 금속탄화물 코팅층이 없는 제2 탄소층을 포함하고, 상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층은 복수의 기공을 포함하는 탄소 기재일 수 있다.
상기 금속탄화물은 전이금속의 탄화물일 수 있다. 전이금속 탄화물의 경우, 전이금속 양이온과 리튬폴리설파이드 사이에 높은 흡착에너지를 가질 수 있고, 구체적으로 Pt와 유사한 메탈릭(metallic)한 d-밴드 상태(d-band state)를 가져 높은 전자전도성과 촉매 활성을 가질 수 있으므로 양극에 적용되어 친황 특성을 나타낼 수 있다. 또한, 상기 전이금속 탄화물이 음극에 적용되어 리튬 이온의 확산 제한 특성, 즉 친리튬 특성을 나타낼 수 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 전이금속의 탄화물은 몰리브덴(Mo), 텅스텐(W), 티타늄(Ti), 니켈(Ni), 바나듐(V), 아연(Zn), 코발트(Co) 및 구리(Cu)로 구성되는 군 중에서 선택되는 적어도 하나 이상의 전이금속에 대한 탄화물일 수 있다. 일 구체예에서, 상기 금속탄화물은 몰리브데넘 탄화물(Mo2C)일 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
상기 탄소기재는 다공성의 기공들이 표면에 노출된 형태인 복수개 기공을 갖는 탄소재를 사용할 수 있다. 이러한 복수개 기공으르 갖는 탄소기재는 높은 셀의 전극에 높은 전기전도도를 부여하고, 물리적으로 리튬폴리설파이드의 전해질로의 용출을 방지하며, 삼차원(3D) 기공 구조를 가짐으로써 리튬 이온의 탈착/전착이 용이하도록 하여 음극에서의 리튬 수지상 정장으로 인한 셀 단락을 방지할 수 있다. 구체적으로 상기 탄소기재는 탄소나노튜브, 탄소 섬유, 그래핀 섬유, 활성 탄소, 카본 블랙 및 이들의 유도체 중 적어도 하나 이상을 포함할 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 탄소기재는 탄소나노튜브를 포함할 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
이때, 상기 탄소기재를 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬-황 전지의 양극으로 적용하는 경우와 음극으로 적용하는 경우, 물성, 두께, 기공 크기 등의 세부적인 물성이 동일한 탄소기재를 사용할 수도 있고, 제조과정의 용이성과 요구되는 전지의 특성에 따라 서로 상이한 탄소기재를 사용할 수도 있다. 예를 들어, 리튬-황 전지의 음극에서는 비교적 기공의 크기가 큰 탄소기재를 사용할 수 있고, 양극에서는 비교적 기공의 크기가 작은 탄소기재를 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
상기 금속탄화물 코팅층은 상기 제1 탄소층에 형성된 복수의 기공 전부 또는 일부의 표면에 상기 금속탄화물이 코팅된 것일 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 금속탄화물 코팅층은 탄소기재의 일정 두께 영역에만 형성되거나, 또는 여기에 코팅되지 않은 별도의 탄소기재를 적층시킴으로써 일정 두께 영역 내지는 한 층에만 비대칭적으로 금속탄화물 코팅층이 형성된 것을 의미할 수 있다. 더욱 구체적으로, 에너지 분산 스펙트럼(EDS; Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) 맵핑에 의해 상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층 중 제1 탄소층에만 비대칭적으로 금속산화물 코팅이 확인될 수 있다. 상기 금속탄화물 코팅층이 전극의 어느 한 층에만 비대칭적으로 구비됨으로써, 이의 전극을 리튬-황 전지에 적용함에 있어 하나의 전극 내 선택적으로 및/또는 계층적으로 물성이 부여된 복합체를 형성할 수 있다.
상기 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체는 상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층이 각각 독립된 탄소기재가 적층된 것일 수 있고, 또는 상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층이 하나의 일체화된 탄소기재 내에 구비된 것일 수도 있다.
상술한 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체는 리튬-황 전지용 전극, 예컨대 양극 또는 음극으로 적용될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬-황 전지는, 상술한 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는 전극을 포함하며, 상기 전극은 황의 환원 반응이 발생하는 양극;과 상기 양극과 마주보도록 배치되어 리튬의 산화 반응이 발생하는 음극;을 포함할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 양극과 상기 음극의 사이에 배치되며 폴리설파이드 이동을 억제하되 이온의 전달을 위한 분리막; 및 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 개재된 전해질;을 포함할 수 있다.
특히, 상기 전극, 구체적으로 양극과 음극에서 금속탄화물 코팅층을 포함하는 제1 탄소층은 상기 분리막에서 먼 쪽에 위치하는 것일 수 있다. 분리막에서 먼 쪽은 금속탄화물 코팅층을 포함하되, 분리막에서 가까운 쪽은 탄소층을 포함함으로써, 양극으로 적용될 시 리튬폴리설파이드의 용출을 구조적으로 억제할 수 있고, 음극으로 적용될 시 리튬 이온의 확산 제한에 의한 전착을 억제하여, 리튬-황 전지의 구동 성능 및 안정성을 증가시킬 수 있다.
상기 전극은 양극 활물질로서 황을 더 포함하여 양극에 사용될 수 있다. 금속탄화물 코팅층을 포함하는 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 양극으로 사용할 시, 리튬폴리설파이드의 화학적 흡착 반응과 전환 반응의 촉진이 수행되며 리튬폴리설파이드가 전해질로 용출되는 것을 억제할 수 있다.
상기 전극은 음극 활물질로서 리튬을 더 포함하여 음극에 사용될 수 있다. 금속탄화물 코팅층을 포함하는 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 음극으로 사용할 시, 전극 내 리튬 이온의 확산을 제한하고 리튬의 전착을 억제하여 수지상 성장을 최소화할 수 있다.
상기 전극의 면적당 용랑은 16.75 내지 33.50 mAh/cm2일 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 전극의 면적당 용량이 16.75 mAh/cm2인 경우, 황(S) 로딩량 5 mg/cm2을 기준으로 양극의 이론 용량이 8.375 mAh/cm2이며, 이때 음극 용량/양극 용량 비율(N/P ratio)이 2이다. 면적당 용량이 33.5 mAh/cm2인 경우, 황(S) 로딩량 10 mg/cm2 기준으로 양극의 이론 용량이 16.75 mAh/cm2이며, 이때 음극 용량/양극 용량 비율(N/P ratio)이 2이다.
상기 리튬-황 전지의 면적당 황 함량은 5 내지 10 mg/cm2일 수 있다. 상기 황 함량, 즉 황(S) 로딩량이 5 mg/cm2미만이면 셀 에너지밀도가 일반적인 리튬이온전지의 에너지밀도(300 Wh/kg, 점선 아래부분) 보다 낮아 요구되는 높은 용량을 가질 수 없고, 반면 10 mg/cm2 초과의 경우 활물질 함량을 증가하여도 높은 E/S 비율을 가져야 하므로 황(S) 로딩량 증가를 통해 얻을 수 있는 에너지 밀도 증가 효율이 낮아질 수 있다. 따라서, 낮은 E/S 비율을 가지면서 높은 에너지밀도를 갖기 위한 적절한 면적당 황 함량은 5 내지 10 mg/cm2일 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
상기 전해질은 리튬염을 포함한 유기 전해액을 포함할 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 리튬염은 한 종류의 리튬염 또는 복수 종류의 리튬염을 혼합한 혼합 리튬염을 사용할 수 있으며, 이를 유기용매에 용해하여 사용할 수 있다. 상기 유기용매는 한 종류의 유기용매 또는 복수 종류의 유기용매를 혼합한 혼합 유기용매를 사용할 수 있다. 일 구체예에서, 상기 전해질은 1 M LiTFSI(Lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide) 및 0.2 M LiNO3의 혼합 리튬염을 디옥솔란(Dioxolane)과 디메틸에테르(dimethyl ether)의 5:5 v/v% 혼합 유기용매를 용해한 리튬 전해액을 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체의 제조방법
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체의 제조방법은, 먼저 (a) 복수의 기공을 포함하는 탄소기재를 준비하는 단계를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 (a) 단계는, 먼저 (a-1) 탄소나노튜브, 탄소 섬유 및 그래핀 섬유 중 적어도 하나 이상을 포함하는 탄소 재료 분말이 용매에 분산된 분산액을 준비하는 단계;가 수행될 수 있다.
이후, (a-2) 상기 분산액으로부터 상기 탄소 재료를 분리하고 건조하여 복수의 기공을 가지는 필름 형태의 탄소 기재를 제조하는 단계;가 수행될 수 있다.
또한, (b) 상기 탄소기재 필름에 금속을 함유하는 전구체 용액을 가한 뒤 탄화시켜 금속탄화물 코팅층을 형성하는 단계를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 (b) 단계는, (b-1) 상기 탄소기재 필름에 금속을 함유하는 전구체 용액을 적하하고 건조하여 상기 전구체 용액 내 용매를 증발시키는 단계; 및 (b-2) 불활성 기체 분위기 하에서 열처리하여 상기 금속을 탄화시키는 단계;를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 (b-1) 단계 이전에, 상기 탄소기재 필름에 플라즈마를 가해 작용기를 생성하는 전처리 단계;를 더 포함할 수도 있다.
상기 (b-2) 단계에서 열처리 온도는 600 내지 1,000 ℃일 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 열처리 온도는 전이금속 양이온을 포함하는 전구체를 탄화시키기 위한 온도로서, 예컨대 800 ℃일 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
상기 (b) 단계에서 상기 금속은 전이금속일 수 있고, 전이금속 양이온과 리튬폴리설파이드 사이에 높은 흡착에너지를 가지는 것으로서, 구체적으로 상기 전이금속은 몰리브덴(Mo), 텅스텐(W), 티타늄(Ti), 니켈(Ni), 바나듐(V), 아연(Zn), 코발트(Co) 및 구리(Cu)로 구성되는 군 중에서 선택되는 적어도 하나 이상이고, 일 구체예에서 몰리브덴일 수 있다.
상기 금속탄화물은 상기 전이금속의 탄화물로서, 예를 들어 몰리브덴(Mo), 텅스텐(W), 티타늄(Ti), 니켈(Ni), 바나듐(V), 아연(Zn), 코발트(Co) 및 구리(Cu)로 구성되는 군 중에서 선택되는 적어도 하나 이상의 전이금속에 대한 탄화물일 수 있고, 일 구체예에서 상기 금속탄화물은 몰리브데넘 탄화물일 수 있다.
상기 (b) 단계에서 상기 전구체는 일정 소결 온도 조건에서 탄화되어 전이금속 탄화물을 형성할 수 있는 전구체라면 비제한적으로 사용될 수 있으나, 일 구체예에서 상기 전구체는 헵타몰리브덴산 암모늄을 사용할 수 있다.
(i) 상기 (b) 단계에서 상기 탄소기재 필름의 일정 두께 영역에만 금속탄화물 코팅층을 형성시키거나, (ii) 상기 (b) 단계 이후에 코팅되지 않은 별도의 탄소기재 필름을 적층시킴으로써, 일정 두께 영역 내지는 한 층에만 비대칭적으로 금속탄화물이 코팅되도록 할 수 있다. 상기 금속탄화물 코팅층이 전극의 어느 한 층에만 비대칭적으로 구비됨으로써, 이의 전극을 리튬-황 전지에 적용함에 있어 하나의 전극 내 선택적으로 및/또는 계층적으로 물성이 부여된 복합체를 형성할 수 있다.
상기 (ii)의 경우에 금속탄화물이 코팅된 탄소기재 필름과 코팅되지 않은 탄소기재 필름은 물리적 압착과정을 통해 적층되는 것일 수 있다. 상기 물리적 압착과정은 특별히 제한되지 않으나, 일 구체예에서 롤링 프레스 머신을 통해 수행될 수 있다.
한편, 상기 (i)의 경우에는 하나의 일체화된 탄소기재 내의 일정 두께에만 금속탄화물이 형성되므로, 추가적인 부재의 접착 없이도 단일 기재에 대해 금속탄화물 코팅층이 선택적 및/또는 계층적으로 형성될 수도 있다.
이하, 본 발명을 실시 예 및 비교 예를 이용하여 더욱 상세하게 설명하고자 한다. 그러나 하기의 실시 예 및 비교 예는 본 발명의 예증을 위한 것으로, 본 발명의 범위가 이에 국한되는 것은 아니다.
실시예 1: 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극 제조
먼저, 탄소나노튜브 분산액을 활용 가능한 공지된 공정을 통해 용매와 탄소 기재를 분리하고, 분리된 탄소 기재를 건조시켜 필름 형태의 탄소 기재를 제조하였다. 사용하는 탄소 기재의 기공 크기에 따라 2가지 형태의 탄소 기재 필름이 제조된다. 다음으로, 제조된 탄소 기재에 산소 플라즈마를 가해 친수성 작용기를 생성하는 전처리를 수행하고, 이의 표면에 헵타몰리브덴산 암모늄(Ammonium heptamolybdate, (NH4)6Mo7O24) 전구체 용액을 떨어뜨린다. 떨어뜨린 전구체 용액을 건조하여 용매를 증발시키고, 전구체 용액이 코팅된 탄소 기재를 아르곤 기체 분위기에서 800 ℃ 온도에서 소결 처리하였다. 소결 처리되어 전구체를 탄화시킴으로써 탄소 기재 표면에 몰리브데넘 탄화물(Mo2C)이 형성된 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 제조하였다.
제조된 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 일반 탄소 기재와 롤링 프레스 머신을 통해 물리적으로 압착시켜 필름 한쪽에만 비대칭적으로 몰리브데넘 탄화물(Mo2C)이 형성된 복합체의 전극을 형성하고, 이를 리튬-황 전지의 전극으로 사용하였다. 이때, 비교적 기공이 큰 탄소 기재를 사용하여 제조된 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 음극으로, 비교적 기공이 작은 탄소 기재를 사용하여 제조된 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 양극으로 사용하였다.
실시예 2: 대칭적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극 제조
실시예 1에서 일 층에 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 사용하고 다른 층에 탄소 기재를 사용한 것 대신에, 두 층 모두 동일한 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 사용하여 실시예1과 동일한 방법으로 물리적 압착으로 부착하였으며, 몰리브데넘 탄화물(Mo2C)이 전극의 두 층으로 대칭적으로 형성된 금속산화물-탄소 복합체 전극을 제작하였다.
비교예 1: 탄소 기재를 전극으로 사용
먼저, 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 탄소 기재를 제조하여 리튬-황 전지의 전극으로 사용하였다.
도 2는 본 발명의 실시예 1에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극 표면의 주사전자현미경(SEM; Scanning Electron Microscopy), 투과전자현미경(TEM; Transmission Electron Microscopy) 및 에너지 분산형 분광법(EDS; Energy disperse X-ray Spectroscopy) 결과이다.
도 2를 참조하면, 실시예 1에서 제조한 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극 표면은 튜브형의 탄소나토뷰트 탄소기재의 표면에 금속탄화물이 고르게 형성된 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 3은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극의 단면에 대한 주사전자현미경(SEM), 투과전자현미경(TEM) 및 에너지 분산 분광법(EDS) 결과이다.
도 3(a) 및 도 3(b)을 참조하면, 실시예 1에서 제조한 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극의 단면을 확인할 수 있다. 비교적 기공이 작은 탄소 기재를 사용하여 제조된 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체의 양극(a, b) 및 비교적 기공이 큰 탄소 기재를 사용하여 제조된 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체의 음극(c, d)에서 모두 튜브형의 탄소나노튜브 탄소기재의 표면에 금속탄화물이 고르게 형성된 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 4는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극의 X-선 분광법(XRD; X-ray diffraction) 결과이다.
도 4를 참조하면, 실시예 1에 따라 제조된 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체에서 몰리브데넘 금속탄화물이 복합체에 잘 형성됨을 확인할 수 있다.
도 5는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극의 자외선-가시광선 분광 스펙트럼(UV-vis spectroscopy) 및 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극의 전해질 흡착 후 용액 색 변화(삽도) 결과이다.
도 5를 참조하면, 실시예 1, 비교예 1에 따라 제조된 각각의 전극에 대해 리튬폴리설파이드(Li2S6)에 대한 흡착 정도를 비교할 수 있다. 실시예 1이 비교예 1 또는 리튬폴리설파이드(Li2S6) 용액에 비해 육안으로 더 투명한 색을 띄고, 훨씬 낮은 흡광도를 가지는 것으로 미루어보아 실시예 1의 몰리브데넘 탄화물-탄소 복합체는 더 많은 리튬 폴리설파이드를 화학적으로 흡착함을 알 수 있다.
도 6은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극을 적용한 리튬-황 전지의 순환 전압전류법 결과이다.
도 6을 참조하면, 몰리브데넘 탄화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는 실시예 1의 경우 탄소만을 포함한 비교예 1에 비해 촉매 특성을 잘 나타내고 더 가역적임을 알 수 있다. 이를 통해, 몰리브데넘 탄화물을 포함하는 탄소 복합체를 사용하는 것이 리튬-황 전지의 성능 향상으로 이어짐을 확인할 수 있다.
도 7은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극을 적용한 리튬-황 전지의 양극 용출량을 평가하기 위한 XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) 분석 결과이다.
도 7을 참조하면, 실시예 1, 실시예 2에 따라 제조된 각각의 양극을 통해 리튬-황 전지를 제작하고 이에 대응하는 음극을 사이클이 특정 사이클 횟수가 지난 후 XPS 분석을 통해 평가하였다. 실시예 2에서 Li2S를 나타내는 피크의 크기가 사이클이 지날수록 급격히 증가하는데, 이는 활물질이 음극으로 더 많이 용출되어 Li2S가 생성되는 부반응이 일어남을 나타냄. 반면 실시예 1은 100 사이클이 지나도 실시예 2에 비해 Li2S를 나타내는 피크의 세기가 약하며, 활물질인 리튬 폴리설파이드의 음극으로의 용출이 억제됨을 확인할 수 있음.
도 8은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극을 적용한 리튬-황 전지 대칭셀에 대한 충방전 결과이다.
도 8을 참조하면, 실시예 1 및 실시예 2를 통해 제작한 양극의 2.05 V에서의 정전압 방전(potentiostatic discharge)를 통해 방전 산물인 Li2S의 침전양을 비교할 수 있다. 충방전 사이클이 지날수록 실시예 2는 침전된 Li2S의 양을 나타내는 그래프의 면적이 급격하게 감소하는 반면, 실시예 1은 침전된 Li2S의 양의 감소량이 실시예 2에 비해 현저히 적음을 확인할 수 있다. 이를 통해 촉매 효과가 있는 몰리브데넘 탄화물을 선택적으로 코팅한 이중층 구조의 양극은 리튬폴리설파이드의 용출이 억제된 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 9는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극을 적용한 리튬-황 전지의 리튬이온 친화도 및 안정성 비교 결과이다.
도 9를 참조하면, 실시예 1, 2 및 비교예 1에 따라 제조된 각각의 음극에 리튬을 전기적으로 전착시킨 결과이다. 리튬 전착 간의 과전압이 실시예 1, 실시예 2에 반해 비교예 1에서 큰 것을 보아, 몰리브데넘 탄화물의 높은 리튬 친화도가 리튬 전착 능력을 향상시킴을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 실시예 1, 2 및 비교예 1의 리튬 전착/탈착의 쿨롱 효율을 비교하였을 때, 실시예 1은 100 사이클에 도달하여도 99.8 %의 높은 쿨롱 효율을 보임을 확인할 수 있다.
도 10은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극을 적용한 리튬-황 전지의 음극에 대하여 리튬 전착 결과이다.
도 10을 참조하면, 실시예 1, 실시예 2에 따라 제조된 각각의 음극에 리튬을 전기적으로 전착시킨 결과를 확인할 수 있다. 실시예 2에 비해 실시예 1에서 제조된 두 층의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극의 위쪽에 리튬이 더 많이 전착됨을 확인할 수 있다.
도 11은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극을 적용한 리튬-황 전지 대칭셀의 사이클 구동 결과이다.
도 11을 참조하면, 실시예 1, 2 및 비교예 1에 따라 제조된 각각의 음극에 대해 대칭 셀을 제작하여 리튬의 탈착/전착 사이클의 수명을 평가하였다. 실시예 1이 비교예 1, 실시예 2에 비해 안정적인 과전압을 보여 높은 수명 안정성을 가짐을 확인할 수 있다. 특히, 높은 전류밀도인 10 mA/cm2에서 실시예 1은 약 250시간 동안 높은 구동 안정성을 보이며, 높은 음극 용량인 20 mAh/cm2조건에서는 2,000시간 이상의 안정적인 탈착/전착 거동을 확인할 수 있다.
전지예 1: 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 양극 및 음극으로 적용한 리튬-황 전지
실시예 1의 전극을 양극 및 음극으로 사용하고, 이의 사이에 위치하는 분리막 및 전해액을 주입하여 리튬-황 완전지를 조립하였다. 이때, 상기 양극 및 음극에서 금속탄화물이 형성된 층의 방향을 분리막과 먼 쪽으로 향하도록 위치시켰다.
도 12는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극을 적용한 리튬-황 전지의 높은 활물질 함량에서의 수명 특성 분석 결과이다.
도 12를 참조하면, 실시예 1에 따라 제조된 전극을 양극 및 음극에 동시 적용한 리튬-황 완전지(전지예 1), 실시예 1의 전극을 양극으로 적용한 리튬-황 반전지(실시예 1-양극으로 표기), 그리고 실시예 1의 전극을 음극으로 적용하고 비교예 1의 전극을 양극으로 적용한 리튬-황 반전지(실시예 1-음극으로 표기) 대한 평가 결과를 확인할 수 있다. 여기서, 전극 면적당 황 함량은 1 mg/cm2 이다. 0.2 C 내지 4 C 비율 사이의 다양한 C-rate 전류 밀도 조건의 정전류 충방전 평가를 실시한 결과, 전지예 1은 특히, 1,380 mAh/g의 높은 비용량을 보이며 20배의 율속 증가에도 75.2 %의 용량 유지율을 나타냄을 확인할 수 있다. 또한, 몰리브덴 탄화물-탄소 복합체가 양극 또는 음극으로 적용된 리튬-황 반전지 대비 모든 전류 밀도 조건에서 향상된 비용량을 나타내는 것으로, 각각 용량 유지율은 69.8 % 및 64.8 %으로, 전지예 1에 비하여 낮은 수준이다.
도 13은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극을 적용한 리튬-황 전지의 높은 활물질 함량에서의 수명 특성 분석 결과이다.
도 13을 참조하면, 높은 활물질 함량 (6 mg/cm2)에서 수명 특성을 확인할 수 있다. 전지예 1이 실시예 1-양극, 실시예 1-음극에 비해 1,013 mAh/g의 비용량을 가지면서도 200 사이클 후에도 63 %의 용량 유지율로 높은 수명 안정성을 가짐을 알 수 있다. 특히 실시예 1-음극을 적용한 리튬-황 반전지는 70사이클이 지나고 리튬 폴리설파이드의 심한 용출로 셀 단락이 일어나고, 실시예 1-양극을 적용한 리튬-황 반전지은 100사이클이 지나자 음극에서의 불안정성으로 인한 용량 감소가 발생하는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 14는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극을 적용한 리튬-황 전지의 높은 황 함량에서의 전지 용량을 분석한 결과이다.
도 14를 참조하면, 전지예 1의 완전지가 7 mg/cm2의 높은 황 함량에서의 면적당 용량을 분석한 그래프이다. 해당 조건에서 전지예 1의 완전지는 8.7 mAh/cm2의 높은 면적당 용량을 가지며 이는 현재 상용화된 리튬-이온 전지에 비해 2배를 상회하는 값이다. 이를 통해 선택적 코팅의 이중층 구조 전극의 효과를 확인할 수 있다.
도 15는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 전극을 적용한 리튬-황 전지의 다양한 황 로딩양 및 E/S 비율에 따른 에너지밀도를 나타낸 그래프이다.
도 15를 참조하면, 상기 황 함량, 즉 황(S) 로딩량이 5 mg/cm2미만이면 셀 에너지밀도가 일반적인 리튬이온전지의 에너지밀도(300 Wh/kg, 점선 아래부분) 보다 낮아 요구되는 높은 용량을 가질 수 없고, 반면 10 mg/cm2 초과의 경우 활물질 함량을 증가하여도 높은 E/S 비율을 가져야 하므로 황(S) 로딩량 증가를 통해 얻을 수 있는 에너지 밀도 증가 효율이 낮아질 수 있다. 따라서, 낮은 E/S 비율을 가지면서 높은 에너지밀도를 갖기 위한 적절한 면적당 황 함량은 5 내지 10 mg/cm2일 수 있다.
이상 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본 발명의 실시 예들을 설명하였지만, 본 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자는 본 발명이 그 기술적 사상이나 필수적인 특징을 변경하지 않고서 다른 구체적인 형태로 실시될 수 있다는 것을 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 그러므로 이상에서 기술한 실시 예들은 모든 면에서 예시적인 것이며 한정적이 아닌 것으로 이해해야만 한다.

Claims (15)

  1. 금속탄화물 코팅층을 포함하는 제1 탄소층과, 상기 제1 탄소층에 접촉하며 금속탄화물 코팅층이 없는 제2 탄소층을 포함하며,
    상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층은 복수의 기공을 포함하는 탄소기재인 것을 특징으로 하는, 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 금속탄화물은 전이금속의 탄화물인 것을 특징으로 하는, 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층은 각각 독립된 탄소기재가 적층된 것임을 특징으로 하는, 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층은 하나의 일체화된 탄소기재인 것을 특징으로 하는, 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체.
  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 금속탄화물 코팅층은 상기 제1 탄소층에 형성된 복수의 기공 전부 또는 일부의 표면에 금속탄화물이 코팅된 것임을 특징으로 하는, 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    EDS(Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) 맵핑에 의해 상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층 중 제1 탄소층에만 비대칭적으로 금속산화물 코팅이 확인되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체.
  7. 금속탄화물 코팅층을 포함하는 제1 탄소층과, 상기 제1 탄소층에 접촉하며 금속탄화물 코팅층이 없는 제2 탄소층을 포함하며, 상기 제1 및 제2 탄소층은 복수의 기공을 포함하는 탄소기재인 것을 특징으로 하는, 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는, 리튬-황 전지용 전극.
  8. 제7항에 있어서,
    상기 전극은 양극 활물질로서 황을 더 포함하여 양극에 사용되며, 리튬폴리설파이드의 화학적 흡착과 전환 촉진을 통해 상기 리튬폴리설파이드의 용출을 억제하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 리튬-황 전지용 전극.
  9. 제8항에 있어서,
    상기 전극에서 상기 제1 탄소층이 리튬-황 전지의 분리막에서 먼 쪽에 위치하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬-황 전지용 전극.
  10. 제7항에 있어서,
    상기 전극은 음극 활물질로서 리튬을 더 포함하여 음극에 사용되며, 리튬 이온의 확산 제한에 의한 전착을 억제하여 수지상 성장을 최소화하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 리튬-황 전지용 전극.
  11. 제10항에 있어서,
    상기 전극에서 상기 제1 탄소층이 리튬-황 전지의 분리막에서 먼 쪽에 위치하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 리튬-황 전지용 전극.
  12. 제10항에 있어서,
    상기 전극의 면적당 용랑은 16.75 내지 33.50 mAh/cm2인 것을 특징으로 하는, 리튬-황 전지용 전극.
  13. (a) 복수의 기공을 포함하는 탄소기재를 준비하는 단계; 및
    (b) 상기 탄소기재에 금속을 함유하는 전구체 용액을 가한 뒤 탄화시켜 금속탄화물 코팅층을 형성하는 단계;를 포함하며,
    (i) 상기 (b) 단계에서 상기 탄소기재의 일정 두께 영역에만 금속탄화물 코팅층을 형성시키거나, (ii) 상기 (b) 단계 이후에 코팅되지 않은 별도의 탄소기재를 적층시킴으로써, 일정 두께 영역 내지는 한 층에만 비대칭적으로 금속탄화물이 코팅된 것을 특징으로 하는, 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 제조방법.
  14. 제13항에 있어서,
    상기 (a) 단계는,
    (a-1) 탄소나노튜브, 탄소 섬유, 그래핀 섬유, 활성 탄소, 카본 블랙 및 이들의 유도체 중 적어도 하나 이상을 포함하는 탄소 재료 분말이 용매에 분산된 분산액을 준비하는 단계; 및
    (a-2) 상기 분산액으로부터 상기 탄소 재료를 분리하고 건조하여 복수의 기공을 가지는 탄소 기재를 제조하는 단계;를 포함하는, 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 제조방법.
  15. 제13항에 있어서,
    상기 (b) 단계는,
    (b-1) 상기 탄소기재에 금속을 함유하는 전구체 용액을 적하하고 건조하여 상기 전구체 용액 내 용매를 증발시키는 단계; 및
    (b-2) 불활성 기체 분위기 하에서 열처리하여 상기 금속을 탄화시키는 단계;를 포함하는, 선택적으로 코팅된 이중층 구조의 금속탄화물-탄소 복합체 제조방법.
