Abstract
본 발명은 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 배치되는 실리콘을 포함하는 탄소-실리콘 복합체와, 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 배치되는 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 포함하는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 및 그 제조방법에 관한 것이다. 이에 의하면, 전반적인 실리콘 사이즈를 작게 억제할 수 있고, 전지 성능 열화에 영향을 주는 중간(intermediate) 상인 Crystal-LixSiy(예를 들어 Li15Si4 또는 Li3.75Si)의 형성을 억제함으로써, 충방전 반복 시 전지 성능 열화를 완화할 수 있다.
Description
본 발명은 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체에 관한 것으로, 보다 상세하게는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체, 그 제조방법, 이를 포함하는 음극 활물질 및 전고체 전지에 관한 것이다.
탄소 소재는 지구상에 가장 흔한 자원 중 하나인 탄소로 이뤄진 소재를 말한다. 탄소 소재는 매우 가볍고, 강하며, 전기 및 열 전도성이 우수해서, 수소차, 항공, 2차 전지, 고급 소비재 등의 분야에서 널리 사용되는 핵심 소재이다.
탄소 소재는 야자각, 폴리아크릴로니트릴, 레이온, 피치 등의 다양한 원료로부터 제조될 수 있는데, 이 중에서 야자각과 같은 고체 상태의 원료로부터 제조되는 탄소 소재는 그 분자량과 성분을 제어하기 어렵다(대한민국 특허출원 공개 10-2019-0093960).
반면, 원유나 식물에서 추출되며 점탄성을 가진 고형 중합체인 피치(pitch)는 탄소 소재로 전환될 때 수율이 높고, 원료 물질이 저렴하며, 다른 원료 보다 분자 구조가 흑연 구조에 가까워 열처리에 드는 에너지를 줄일 수 있다는 장점을 가지고 있다(미국 특허 제4,242,196호 및 제4,340,464호).
특히, 석유 정제 공정에서 부산물로서 얻어지는 열분해 연료유(pyrolysis fuel oil; PFO), 나프타 분해 잔사유(naphtha cracking bottom oil; NCB), 감압 잔사유(vacuum residue; VR), 유동 접촉 분해유(fluid catalytic cracking decant oil; FCC-DO) 등은 방향족 화합물의 함량이 높고, 황과 질소 등 불순물 함량이 적어서, 이로부터 제조되는 피치는 탄소 소재의 재료로서 주목받고 있다.
한편, 이차전지의 용량을 향상시키기 위해 실리콘계 음극 활물질을 사용하려는 시도가 이루어지고 있다. 실리콘은 이론상 에너지 밀도가 매우 높아서 흑연을 대체할 차세대 배터리 음극 활물질로서 각광받고 있지만, 충방전 시 부피가 최대 300% 정도까지 증가하여, 충방전을 진행할수록 음극 활물질인 실리콘이 파쇄되는 등 기계적 안정성이 매우 떨어지는 문제를 가지고 있다.
따라서, 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위한 연구가 진행되었으나, 종래의 음극 활물질의 경우 부피 팽창에 따른 파쇄 현상과 전기화학적 성능 감소 등의 문제를 충분히 해소하지 못하는 문제가 있었다.

본 발명은 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 실리콘이 형성된 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘-탄소 복합 매트릭스를 가지는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 제공하는 것에 목적이 있다.
본 발명은 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 제조방법을 제공하는 것에 다른 목적이 있다.
본 발명은 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 포함하는 음극 활물질을 제공하는 것에 또 다른 목적이 있다.
상술한 과제를 해결하기 위해 본 발명은, 다공성 탄소 지지체와 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 배치되는 실리콘을 포함하는 탄소-실리콘 복합체, 및 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 배치되고 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 포함하는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 제공한다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 의하면, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 부피 대비 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 기공 부피가 5 ~ 50%일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 부피 대비 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 기공 부피가 0.5 ~ 50%일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스는 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 전체 중량 중 10 ~ 90 중량%일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 전체 중량 중 실리콘을 20 ~ 70 중량% 포함할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 c/a 피크 비(peak ratio)가 0 ~ 1.5일 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명은 다공성 탄소 지지체 기공 내부에 실리콘을 형성하여 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 제조하는 단계, 및 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 형성하는 단계를 포함하는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 제조방법을 제공한다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 의하면, 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 제조하는 단계는, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체에 실리콘 공급원을 화학 기상 증착(CVD)하여 수행할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 형성하는 단계는 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체에 실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원을 동시에 화학 기상 증착하여 수행할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 형성하는 단계에서 상기 실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원은 기체 유량비가 1 : 0.05 ~ 1.9일 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명은 상술한 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 포함하는 음극 활물질을 제공한다.
또한, 본 발명은 상술한 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 포함하는 SEI(Solid Electrolyte Interphase)막을 포함하는 전고체 전지를 제공한다.
본 발명에 따른 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 배치되는 실리콘을 포함하는 탄소-실리콘 복합체와, 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 배치되는 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 포함함에 따라, 전반적인 실리콘 사이즈를 작게 억제할 수 있고, 전지 성능 열화에 영향을 주는 중간(intermediate) 상인 Crystal-LixSiy(예를 들어 Li15Si4 또는 Li3.75Si)의 형성을 억제함으로써, 충방전 반복 시 전지 성능 열화를 완화할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 구현예에 따른 제조방법은 위 특징을 갖는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 용이하게 제조할 수 있다.

본 명세서에서 "포함"한다는 것은 특별한 기재가 없는 한 다른 구성 요소를 더 포함할 수 있음을 의미한다.
본 명세서에 기재된 구성 성분의 양, 반응 조건 등을 나타내는 모든 숫자 및 표현은 반대되는 기재가 없는 한 모든 경우에 "약"이라는 용어로써 수식되는 것으로 이해하여야 한다.
이하 본 발명에 대해 보다 구체적으로 설명한다.
탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따라서, 다공성 탄소 지지체와 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 배치되는 실리콘을 포함하는 탄소-실리콘 복합체, 및 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 배치되고 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 포함하는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체가 제공된다.
이때, 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 각 용어는 하기의 의미를 가질 수 있다.
* 탄소: 다공성 탄소 지지체의 탄소를 의미
* 실리콘: 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 배치되는 실리콘을 의미
* 실리콘/탄소: 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체 상에 배치되고, "SiCx 및/또는 SixCy 내에 Si"가 위치한 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 의미
한편, 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 BET 비표면적이 200㎡/g 이하일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 100㎡/g 이하, 더욱 바람직하게는 50㎡/g 이하일 수 있다. 만일 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 BET 비표면적이 200㎡/g를 초과하면 높은 BET 로 인해 전해질과의 반응으로 많은 SEI 층이 형성되어 나쁜 전기화학성능을 보일 수 있다.
이하에서 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 각 구성요소를 설명한다.
다공성 탄소 지지체
본 발명의 구현예에 따른 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 다공성 탄소 지지체를 포함한다.
상기 다공성 탄소 지지체는 총 기공 부피를 기준으로 기공 크기가 2 ㎚ 이하인 마이크로기공(Micropore)의 부피 비율이 50 ~ 90%일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 60 ~ 80%일 수 있다. 만일 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 마이크로기공의 부피 비율이 50% 미만일 경우 내부에 증착되는 실리콘의 두께가 두꺼워 충방전 시 실리콘의 부피팽창 응력에 의해 소재의 열화가 가속화될 우려가 있고, 마이크로기공의 부피 비율이 90%를 초과할 경우 실리콘 증착 시 내부에 많은 닫힌 기공이 형성될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체는 500 ~ 2,500 ㎡/g의 BET 비표면적을 가질 수 있고, 바람직하게는 1,300 ~ 1,950㎡/g의 BET 비표면적을 가질 수 있다. 다공성 탄소 지지체의 BET 비표면적이 500 ㎡/g 미만일 경우, 거대 기공(macropore)이 너무 많아서 유효한 기공이 부족할 수 있고, 다공성 탄소 지지체의 BET 비표면적이 2,500 ㎡/g을 초과할 경우, 미세 기공(micropore)이 과도하게 많아서, 실리콘 증착 시 내부에 많은 닫힌 기공이 형성될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체는 0.2 ~ 0.6 g/㎖의 탭 밀도를 가질 수 있고, 바람직하게는, 0.3 ~ 0.5 g/㎖의 탭 밀도를 가질 수 있다. 다공성 탄소 지지체의 탭 밀도가 0.2 g/㎖ 미만일 경우, 다공성 탄소 지지체에 실리콘 형성 시 공정 제어가 어려워 수율이 저하될 수 있고, 다공성 탄소 지지체의 탭 밀도가 0.6 g/㎖를 초과할 경우, 다공성 탄소 지지체에 실리콘 형성 시 균일한 실리콘 형성이 어려울 수 있다.
그리고, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체는 1~20 ㎛의 평균 입자 크기를 가질 수 있다. 바람직하게는, 다공성 탄소 지지체가 3~20 ㎛의 평균 입자 크기, 더 바람직하게는 3~10㎛의 평균 입자 크기를 가질 수 있다. 다공성 탄소 지지체의 평균 입자 크기가 상기 범위를 만족하지 못하면 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 표면에 형성되는 실리콘이 증가하여 기공 내부에 목적하는 수준으로 실리콘을 형성할 수 없을 수 있다.
본 발명의 구현예에 따른 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체가 위 특성을 갖는 다공성 탄소 지지체를 포함함으로써, 이러한 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 음극 활물질로 사용할 경우, 전기 전도도가 우수하고, 실리콘의 부피 팽창으로 인한 응력을 완화시키는 측면에서 유리할 수 있다.
탄소-실리콘 복합체
본 발명의 구현예에 따른 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 배치되는 실리콘을 포함하는 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 포함한다.
본 발명의 구체예에서, 후술하는 바와 같이, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체에 실리콘 공급원을 화학 기상 증착(CVD)함으로써, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 실리콘을 배치시켜서 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 얻을 수 있다.
이때, 상기 실리콘은 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 배치되고, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 표면 상 적어도 일부 영역에도 배치될 수 있다.
한편, 상기 실리콘은 결정질(crystalline) 또는 비정질(amorphous)일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 비정질 또는 이와 유사한 상일 수 있다. 상기 실리콘이 결정질일 경우, 결정자의 크기가 작을수록 치밀한 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 얻을 수 있기 때문에, 이차전지의 초기 효율이나 사이클 수명 특성이 향상될 수 있다.
본 발명의 구체예에서, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 배치되는 실리콘은 결정형 실리콘일 수 있고, 이때, 실리콘 결정의 크기는 나노 수준일 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 결정형 실리콘의 결정 평균 크기는 10 ㎚ 이하일 수 있고, 바람직하게는, 8 ㎚ 이하, 5 ㎚ 이하, 3 ㎚ 이하, 또는 2 ㎚ 이하일 수 있다. 상기 상기 결정형 실리콘의 결정 평균 크기가 상기 범위를 만족할 경우, 실리콘의 부피 팽창에 따른 응력의 크기가 작아지게 되므로, 음극 활물질의 수명 특성이 향상될 수 있다.
상기 실리콘은 박막 형상일 수 있으며, 상기 실리콘의 층 평균 두께는 10nm ~ 5㎛일 수 있다. 만일 상기 실리콘의 층 평균 두께가 10㎚ 미만이면 전기 용량이 저하될 수 있고, 평균 두께가 5㎛를 초과하면 실리콘의 부피 팽창으로 인해 발생하는 문제를 해결하지 못하여 음극재의 구조적인 손상을 일으킬 수 있고 사이클 특성이 저하될 수 있다.
한편, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 부피 대비 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 기공 부피가 5 ~ 50%일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 7 ~ 45%일 수 있다. 만일 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 부피 대비 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 기공 부피가 5% 미만이면 대부분의 기공 및 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스까지 실리콘이 형성됨에 따라 충방전 시 실리콘 부피팽창으로 인한 수명 특성의 열화 문제가 있을 수 있고, 50%를 초과하면 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체 기공 내부에 배치된 실리콘이 적을 수 있음에 따라 전기화학적 성능이 감소할 수 있다.
상기 실리콘은 산화 실리콘 화합물을 더 포함할 수 있다. 산화 실리콘 화합물은 일반식 SiOx(0.5≤x≤2)로 표시될 수 있다. 여기서, x 값이 0.5 미만일 경우, 이차전지의 충방전 시, 팽창 수축이 커지고 수명특성이 악화될 수 있고, x가 2를 초과할 경우, 불활성 산화물이 많아지면서 이차전지의 초기 효율이 저하될 수 있다.
상기 실리콘 중의 산화 실리콘 화합물의 함량은 상기 실리콘 총 중량을 기준으로 50 중량% 이하일 수 있다. 상기 실리콘 중의 산화 실리콘 화합물의 함량이 50 중량%를 초과할 경우, 이차전지의 초기 효율이 저하될 수 있다.
실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스
본 발명의 구현예에 따른 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 배치되고 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 포함한다.
상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스가 배치됨에 따라, 전지 적용 시 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체 내의 실리콘과 전해질의 접촉을 방지할 수 있어서 충방전 반복 시 전지 성능 열화를 완화할 수 있다.
상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스는 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 것으로, Si-Si 결합에 의해 형성되는 실리콘 부분과 Si-C 결합에 의해 형성되는 탄화실리콘 부분이 혼재하는 연속상을 의미할 수 있다.
본 발명의 구체예에서, 후술하는 바와 같이, 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체 상에 실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원을 동시에 화학 기상 증착(CVD)하여 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 얻을 수 있다.
한편, 상기 실리콘은 결정질(crystalline) 또는 비정질(amorphous)일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 비정질 또는 이와 유사한 상일 수 있다. 상기 실리콘이 결정질일 경우, 결정자의 크기가 작을수록 부피팽창으로 인한 응력이 감소하며 탄화실리콘에 의해 부피팽창이 억제되어 이차전지의 사이클 수명 특성이 향상될 수 있다.
한편, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 부피 대비 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 기공 부피가 0.5 ~ 50%일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 1 ~ 45%일 수 있다. 만일 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 부피 대비 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 기공 부피가 0.5% 미만이면 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스에 두꺼운 코팅층을 포함하는 문제가 있을 수 있고, 50%를 초과하면 전해질 부반응이 일어날 수 있는 넓은 표면적으로 인해 초기 충방전 효율이 떨어지는 문제가 있을 수 있다.
또한, 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스는 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 전체 중량 중 10 ~ 90 중량%일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 15 ~ 85 중량%일 수 있다. 만일 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 전체 중량 중 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스가 10 중량% 미만이면 전기용량이 저하될 수 있고, 90 중량%를 초과하면 충방전 시 실리콘의 부피 팽창으로 인해 발생하는 문제를 해결하지 못하여 음극재의 구조적인 손상을 일으킬 수 있고 사이클 특성이 저하될 수 있다.
상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스의 실리콘은 산화 실리콘 화합물을 더 포함할 수 있다. 산화 실리콘 화합물은 일반식 SiOx(0.5≤x≤2)로 표시될 수 있다. 여기서, x 값이 0.5 미만일 경우, 이차전지의 충방전 시, 팽창 수축이 커지고 수명특성이 악화될 수 있고, x가 2를 초과할 경우, 불활성 산화물이 많아지면서 이차전지의 초기 효율이 저하될 수 있다.
상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스의 실리콘 중의 산화 실리콘 화합물의 함량은 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스의 실리콘 총 중량을 기준으로 50 중량% 이하일 수 있다. 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스의 실리콘 중의 산화 실리콘 화합물의 함량이 50 중량%를 초과할 경우, 이차전지의 초기 효율이 저하될 수 있다.
한편, 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스에 포함되는 실리콘은 결정형 실리콘을 포함할 수 있다. 이때, 실리콘 결정의 크기는 나노 수준일 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스 중의 실리콘 결정의 평균 크기는 10 ㎚ 이하일 수 있다. 바람직하게는, 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스 중의 실리콘 결정의 평균 크기가 8 ㎚ 이하, 5 ㎚ 이하, 3 ㎚ 이하, 또는 1 ㎚ 이하일 수 있다. 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스 중의 실리콘 결정의 평균 크기가 위 범위를 만족할 경우, 실리콘의 부피 팽창에 따른 응력의 크기가 작아지게 되므로, 음극 활물질의 수명 특성이 향상될 수 있다. 한편, 이때 상기 실리콘 결정의 평균 크기가 상기 범위를 만족하는 것은, Si-Si 결합 보다 Si-C 결합이 더 선호되는 것에 기인한 것일 수 있다.
한편, 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 전체 중량 중 실리콘을 20 ~ 70 중량% 포함할 수 있고, 바람직하게는 전체 중량 중 실리콘을 25 ~ 65 중량% 포함할 수 있다. 만일 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 전체 중량 중 실리콘이 20 중량% 미만이면 전기 용량이 저하되는 문제가 있을 수 있고, 70 중량%를 초과하면 충방전 시 실리콘의 부피 팽창으로 인해 발생하는 문제를 해결하지 못하여 음극재의 구조적인 손상을 일으킬 수 있고 사이클 특성이 저하될 수 있다.
한편, 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 c/a 피크 비(peak ratio)가 0 ~ 1.5, 바람직하게는 0 ~ 1.3, 보다 바람직하게는 0 ~ 1.2, 더욱 바람직하게는 0 ~ 1.18, 더욱 더 바람직하게는 0 ~ 1.15일 수 있다. 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 c/a 피크 비(peak ratio)가 상기 범위를 만족함에 따라, 수명평가 시 안정적인 전기화학성능 유지 효과가 있는 등 본 발명의 목적 달성에 더욱 유리할 수 있다. 이때, c/a 피크 비는 크리스탈(c)과 아몰퍼스(a)의 피크 비를 나타낸다.
탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 제조방법
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는, 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 실리콘을 형성하여 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 제조하는 단계, 및 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 형성하는 단계를 포함하는 제조방법으로 제조된다(도 1 참조).
이하, 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 제조방법에 대한 설명에 있어서, 상술한 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체에 대한 설명과 동일한 내용에 대해서는 생략하고 설명하도록 한다.
먼저, 다공성 탄소 지지체 기공 내부에 실리콘을 형성하여 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 제조한다.
이때, 상기 실리콘의 형성은, 본 발명이 속하는 기술분야에서 알려진 장치(예컨대, 로터리 킬른)과 방법(예컨대, 기상 증착(chemical vapor deposition; CVD))을 이용하여 수행될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 다공성 탄소 지지체에 실리콘 공급원을 공급하고 CVD를 수행하여 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 실리콘을 형성시켜서 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 형성할 수 있다.
본 발명의 구체예에서, 상기 실리콘 공급원은 실란(silane; SiH4), 디클로로실란 (dichlorosilane; SiH2Cl2), 실리콘 테트라플루오라이드(silicon tetrafluoride; SiF4), 실리콘 테트라클로라이드(silicon tetrachloride; SiCl4), 메틸실란(methylsilane, CH3SiH3), 및 디실란(disilane; Si2H6)으로부터 선택되는 적어도 하나를 포함할 수 있으나, 이들로 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니다.
또한, 상기 CVD는 300 ~ 600 ℃ 의 온도에서 수행될 수 있고, 바람직하게는 450 ~ 550 ℃의 온도에서 수행될 수 있다.
다음으로, 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 형성하여 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 제조한다.
이때, 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스의 형성은, 본 발명이 속하는 기술분야에서 알려진 장치(예컨대, 로터리 킬른)과 방법(예컨대, 기상 증착(chemical vapor deposition; CVD))을 이용하여 수행될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체에 실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원을 공급하고 CVD를 수행하여 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 형성할 수 있다.
또는, 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 형성하는 단계를 수행하는 실리콘 공급원의 화학 기상 증착을 계속적으로 수행하는 중에, 후반부에 탄소 공급원을 공급하여 화학 기상 증착을 수행하면서 동시에 실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원이 CVD 되도록 하여 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 형성할 수도 있다.
본 발명의 구체예에서, 상기 실리콘 공급원은 실란(silane; SiH4), 디클로로실란 (dichlorosilane; SiH2Cl2), 실리콘 테트라플루오라이드(silicon tetrafluoride; SiF4), 실리콘 테트라클로라이드(silicon tetrachloride; SiCl4), 메틸실란(methylsilane, CH3SiH3), 및 디실란(disilane; Si2H6)으로부터 선택되는 적어도 하나를 포함할 수 있으나, 이들로 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니다.
또한, 상기 탄소 공급원은 메탄, 에탄, 프로판, 부탄, 메탄올, 에탄올, 프로판올, 프로판디올, 부탄디올, 에틸렌, 프로필렌, 부틸렌, 부타디엔, 사이클로펜텐, 아세틸렌, 벤젠, 톨루엔, 자일렌, 에틸벤젠, 나프탈렌, 안트라센 및 디부틸하이드록시 톨루엔으로 구성되는 군으로부터 선택되는 적어도 1종을 포함할 수 있으나, 이들로 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니다.
또한, 상기 CVD는 300 ~ 600 ℃ 의 온도에서 수행될 수 있고, 바람직하게는 450 ~ 550 ℃의 온도에서 수행될 수 있다.
한편, 상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 형성하는 단계에서, 상기 실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원의 기체 유량비는 1 : 0.05 ~ 1.9일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 1 : 0.6 ~ 1.5일 수 있다. 만일 상기 실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원의 기체 유량비가 1 : 0.05 미만(실리콘 1 초과, 탄소 0.05 미만)이면 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스에 탄화규소가 부족하여 실리콘 부피 팽창으로 인한 열화가 발생할 수 있고, 기체 유량비가 1 : 1.9를 초과(실리콘 1 미만, 탄소 1.9 초과)하면 실리콘이 부족하여 전기용량이 저하되거나 수명특성이 저하되는 등 전기화학 특성이 저하될 수 있다.
음극 활물질
본 발명의 또 다른 구현예에 따라서, 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 포함하는 음극 활물질이 제공된다.
본 발명의 구현예에 따른 음극 활물질은 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 포함할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 구현예에 따른 음극 활물질은 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 외에 탄소계 음극 재료, 구체적으로 흑연계 음극 재료를 추가로 포함할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 음극 활물질은 본 발명의 구현예에 따른 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체와 탄소계 음극 재료, 예를 들어 흑연계 음극 재료를 혼합하여 얻어질 수 있다.
여기서, 탄소계 음극 재료는, 예를 들면, 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연, 소프트 카본, 하드 카본, 메조카본, 탄소 파이버, 탄소 나노튜브, 열분해 탄소류, 코크스류, 유기 고분자 화합물 소성체 및 카본 블랙으로 구성되는 군으로부터 선택되는 적어도 1종을 포함할 수 있으나, 이들로 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니다.
본 발명의 구현예에 따른 음극 활물질 중의 탄소계 음극 재료의 함량은 음극 활물질 총 중량에 대해 2~80 중량%, 바람직하게는 5~70 중량%, 더욱 바람직하게는 30~70 중량%일 수 있다.
본 발명의 구현예에 따른 음극 활물질은 이차전지, 구체적으로 리튬 이차전지의 음극 및 전고체 전지의 음극 등을 제조하는 데에 효과적으로 사용될 수 있다.
전고체 전지
본 발명의 또 다른 구현예에 따라서, 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 포함하는 SEI(Solid Electrolyte Interphase)막을 포함하는 전고체 전지가 제공된다.
상기 전고제 전지는 양극, 음극 및 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 고체 전해질을 포함하는 전고체 전지일 수 있고, 상기 음극은 음극 활물질층을 포함할 수 있으며, 상기 음극 활물질 층의 음극 활물질 입자 상 적어도 일부에 상술한 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 포함하는 SEI(Solid Electrolyte Interphase)막을 포함할 수 있다.
한편, 상기 음극 활물질 입자는 탄소계 음극 재료일 수 있으며, 이 경우 상술한 음극 활물질에 대한 내용에서 설명한 내용과 동일할 수 있음에 따라, 관련 설명은 생략하도록 한다.
또한, 상기 전고체 전지의 음극 활물질 입자와 SEI막 외에, 음극 구성, 양극 구성 및 고체 전해질 구성 등은 공지된 전고체 전지의 구성을 적용할 수 있음에 따라, 본 발명에서는 이를 특별히 한정하지 않는다.
이하 실시예에 의해 본 발명을 보다 구체적으로 설명한다. 이하의 실시예들은 본 발명을 예시하는 것일 뿐이며, 본 발명의 범위가 이들로 한정되지는 않는다.
[실시예]
<실시예 1>
먼저, 비표면적이 1,934 ㎡/g이고, 탭 밀도가 0.44 g/㎖이며 평균 입자 크기가 6 ㎛인 다공성 탄소 지지체를 준비하였다.
이어서, 이 다공성 탄소 지지체 15 g을 Rotating CVD 장비에 장입 후 온도 475℃까지 불활성 분위기(N2)에서 승온 후 1시간 동안 CVD를 수행하였다. 이때, 1시간 중 50분 동안은 SiH4 300sccm의 가스 유량으로 CVD를 수행하고, 나머지 10분 동안은 SiH4:C2H4 = 300sccm : 96 sccm 의 가스 유량이 되도록 복합 CVD를 수행하여(SiH4는 계속적으로 공급), 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 실리콘이 형성된 탄소-실리콘 복합체 및 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스가 형성된 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 제조하였다.
<실시예 2>
실시예 1과 동일하게 실시하되, 나머지 10 분 동안의 SiH4:C2H4 = 300sccm : 96 sccm 의 가스 유량을 SiH4:C2H4 = 300sccm : 150 sccm 의 가스 유량(실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원의 기체 유량비 1 : 0.5)으로 변경하여 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 제조하였다.
<실시예 3>
실시예 1과 동일하게 실시하되, 나머지 10 분 동안의 SiH4:C2H4 = 300sccm : 96 sccm 의 가스 유량을 SiH4:C2H4 = 300sccm : 300 sccm 의 가스 유량(실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원의 기체 유량비 1 : 1)으로 변경하여 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 제조하였다.
<실시예 4>
실시예 1과 동일하게 실시하되, 나머지 10 분 동안의 SiH4:C2H4 = 300sccm : 96 sccm 의 가스 유량을 SiH4:C2H4 = 300sccm : 600 sccm 의 가스 유량(실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원의 기체 유량비 1 : 2)으로 변경하여 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체를 제조하였다.
<비교예 1>
실시예 1과 동일하게 실시하되, CVD를, SiH4의 가스유량 300sccm 및 온도 475℃ 조건으로 1시간 증착하는 것으로 변경하여 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 제조하였다.
<비교예 2>
실시예 1과 동일하게 실시하되, CVD를, SiH4의 가스유량 300sccm 및 온도 475℃ 조건으로 50분 증착하는 것으로 변경하여 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 제조하였다.
<실험예>
(1) 주사형 전자현미경(SEM) 분석
상기 실시예 1 내지 4에 따라 제조한 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체에 대해 주사형 전자현미경(scanning electron microscope, SEM)을 이용해 관찰하였다(도 2).
이때, 실시예 1 내지 4에 따라 제조된 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 입경, 비표면적및 탭 밀도는 하기 표 1과 같다. 또한, 대조군으로써 하기 표 1과 같은 입경, 탭 밀도 및 평균 입자 크기를 가지는 다공성 탄소 지지체를 준비하였다.

상기 표 1에서 알 수 있듯이, 실시예1 내지 3의 경우 실리콘의 형성 및 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스(탄화실리콘+실리콘 혼재)의 형성으로 인하여 입경이 증가하는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
한편, 실시예 4의 경우 도 2에 도시된 바와 같이 Si 나노입자(nanoparticle)들의 형성이 관찰된 것을 확인할 수 있었는데, 이는 탄소 함량이 증가(가스유량비)함에 따라 핵생성이 유리해져서 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스가 아닌 나노입자(nanoparticle)가 형성된 것으로 볼 수 있고, 이의 방증으로써 입경 증가 정도가 실시예 3에 비해 감소한 것을 확인할 수 있다.
(2) 전기화학 평가
실시예 1 내지 4의 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 및 비교예 2의 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 이용하여 하프 코인셀을 각각 제조한 후 전기화학 평가를 실시하였다. 하프 코인 셀 제조 조건은 표 2에 나타내었고, 평가 결과는 표 3~4 및 도 3에 나타내었다. 표 2에서 AM, CM 및 BM은 각각 활물질(실리콘/탄소 복합체), 도전체(슈퍼P 카본블랙) 및 바인더(스티렌-부타디엔 고무/카르복시메틸 셀룰로오스 5:5)를 나타내고, EC, EMC, DMC, FEC, VC, PS는 에틸렌 카보네이트, 에틸 메틸 카보네이트, 디메틸 카보네이트, 플루오로에틸렌 카보네이트, 비닐렌 카보네이트, 프로판 설톤을 각각 나타낸다.

위 표 3~4 및 도 3으로부터 확인되는 바와 같이, 실시예 1 내지 4는 약 2000mAh/g의 가역용량을 보이며, 높은 CE를 달성하는 것을 알 수 있다. 이에 반하여, 실시예 4의 경우 낮은 ICE를 보였고, 비교예는 사이클 유지율이 현격하게 저하되는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
(3) dq/dV 측정 (c-LiSi 상 관련 측정)
실시예 1 내지 3 및 비교예 1에 대하여 음극물질의 Si 실장량 등을 바탕으로 계산된 C-rate를 이용하여 0.1C-0.1C, 0.005V/0.01C cut off(CV) 조건으로 Formation(CC-CV)을 실시한다. 그 후 수집된 데이터를 이용하여 dQ/dV(d(Q-Qo)/dE)를 도출한다. 본 발명에서 dQ/dV는 EC-Lab의 Analysis Process를 통해 계산 및 도출하였다. 이를 표 5 및 도 4에 나타내었다.

그 결과, 실시예 1 내지 3은 비교예 1 대비 c-LiSi 상을 적게 형성하는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 이에 따라 수명평가 시 안정적인 전기화학성능 유지 효과가 있을 것으로 예상되었으며, 상술한 표 4에서도 이를 확인할 수 있었다.
특히, 실시예 3의 경우 가장 낮은 c-Lisi peak가 검출되었고, 이에 따라 상술한 표 4와 같이 cycle retention이 가장 우수한 것을 알 수 있었다.
이상에서 본 발명의 일 실시예에 대하여 설명하였으나, 본 발명의 사상은 본 명세서에 제시되는 실시 예에 제한되지 아니하며, 본 발명의 사상을 이해하는 당업자는 동일한 사상의 범위 내에서, 구성요소의 부가, 변경, 삭제, 추가 등에 의해서 다른 실시 예를 용이하게 제안할 수 있을 것이나, 이 또한 본 발명의 사상범위 내에 든다고 할 것이다.
Claims (12)
- 다공성 탄소 지지체와 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 내부에 배치되는 실리콘을 포함하는 탄소-실리콘 복합체; 및상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 배치되고 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스;를 포함하는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 부피 대비 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 기공 부피가 5 ~ 50%인 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 다공성 탄소 지지체의 기공 부피 대비 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체의 기공 부피가 0.5 ~ 50%인 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스는 상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 전체 중량 중 10 ~ 90 중량%인 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 전체 중량 중 실리콘을 20 ~ 70 중량% 포함하는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체는 c/a 피크 비(peak ratio)가 0 ~ 1.5인 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체.
- 다공성 탄소 지지체 기공 내부에 실리콘을 형성하여 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 제조하는 단계; 및상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 표면 상에 탄화실리콘과 실리콘이 혼재된 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 형성하는 단계;를 포함하는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 제조방법.
- 제7항에 있어서,상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체를 제조하는 단계는, 상기 다공성 탄소 지지체에 실리콘 공급원을 화학 기상 증착(CVD)하여 수행하는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 제조방법.
- 제7항에 있어서,상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 형성하는 단계는, 상기 탄소-실리콘 복합체에 실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원을 동시에 화학 기상 증착하여 수행하는 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 제조방법.
- 제7항에 있어서,상기 실리콘/탄소 복합 매트릭스를 형성하는 단계에서 상기 실리콘 공급원과 탄소 공급원은 기체 유량비가 1 : 0.05 ~ 1.9인 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체 제조방법.
- 제1항 내지 제6항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 탄소―실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체;를 포함하는 음극 활물질.
- 제1항 내지 제6항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 탄소-실리콘-실리콘/탄소 복합체;를 포함하는 SEI(Solid Electrolyte Interphase)막을 포함하는 전고체 전지.
