- research related to spider silk proteins has recently reported some outstanding research results, mainly due to intensive research and investment since the 2000s.
- Dragline spider silk which is used as a spider's lifeline and used to create a radial spider web, has great strength and elasticity. Spider silk has five times the strength per unit mass of steel and three times stronger than high-quality man-made Kepler fibers (Gosline, J. M. et al., J. Exp. Biol., 202:3295, 1999; Vollrath, F . & Knight, D. P., Nature 410: 541, 2001). In addition, it has biodegradable properties, so it can be applied to biomedical fields such as sutures and scaffolds. It has an anti-inflammatory function, so it can be applied as an antibacterial material. It has excellent moisturizing properties, so it can be used as a variety of cosmetic materials. Therefore, dragline spider silk has received much attention as a material with various industrial applications.
