Definitions
- the invention relates to a method and apparatus system for correction of the nail deformities, which allows the thick or thin nails detached from the nail bed due to the reasons such as genetic, fungus, deformity, trauma, etc., or the thickened and deformed nails that are not attached to the nail bed, to grow in a thin and normal manner by attaching to the nail bed.
- the invention helps the nail both get normal fineness and attach to its bed. To this end, firstly it makes the nail thin, if it is thick; softens and cleans the regions which are deformed and curved; cleans the nail bed by drilling holes without nail avulsion; and facilitates the normal growth of the nail by applying pressure to the areas from where the nail originates and grows.
- Nail deformities are conditions that are congenital or acquired, do not have a standard treatment at the moment, and cannot be corrected by medical or surgical methods. Nail deformities may be congenital, but sometimes may develop due to the acquired causes such as nail avulsion and trauma. The problem is that the nail cannot attach to its bed and cannot grow in its natural bed properly as a thin nail. These nails are the ones which are generally curved upwards, are thickened by folding over themselves and have a broken or restricted relationship with the nail bed below.
- Onychogryphosis is a disease in which the nail cannot grow normally and becomes increasingly thickened and detached from the bed, resembling a claw. It may be painful. The patient is not able to clip and thin the nail, and has difficulty wearing normal shoes. In some cases, the nail becomes curved to one side, as one side of the nail is not able to grow as fast as the other side. Although nail avulsion is recommended in the treatment, treatment cannot be guaranteed and there is no non-surgical standard method.
- Subungual hyperkeratosis means thickening of the nail. Although it usually develops due to a fungal infection, it may sometimes develop as a result of the trauma, psoriasis etc. The nail becomes too thickened; the surface is uneven and often discolored. Treatment may be difficult and troublesome, or the patient has regularly to go to a podologist or pedicure.
- Onycholysis means that nail detaches from the bed part under the nail. This space forms a suitable environment for the colonization of bacteria, fungi, etc. There is no standard treatment for onycholysis.
- a pincer nail is a common situation where the tip of the nail is curved inwardly from edges, thereby causing pain and progressive deformation by compressing the skin.
- Pincer nails may be unilateral or bilateral. However, in the unilateral pincer nails sometimes the other normal side may be broken due to the overpressure until the convex part is opened as the wires and apparatus are generally grip the nail on both sides. In short, there is no tool applied only to the curved side or even the curved region. In addition, it may be difficult for patients to live with a tool for weeks or months in the shoes, and the length of the application time of tools such as wires, etc. may be problematic.
- the object of nail deformation correcting apparatus system of the invention is to allow the nail to attach to its bed and grow with a normal thinness and normal color.
- a major apparatus with a mechanism that applies vibration or pressure to the area behind the proximal nail fold, called matrix from where the nail originates and grows has been developed. It is aimed to increase the blood supply of the nail matrix by applying controlled vibration or pressure from one side or throughout the entire matrix region, and to enable the matrix cells to form a uniform and well-organized nail tissue by attaching to the underlying periosteum of bone.
- This major apparatus that applies pressure can be worn by the patient during daily life and can be worn and removed daily.
- An automatic contact and stimulus may be provided to the desired area with the foot movements of the patient while the apparatus is worn.
- This major apparatus helps the nail matrix to locate into the periosteum evenly by applying an adjustable or constant pressure or vibration and applying this pressure only unilaterally when necessary, and moreover as the patient walks, he/she may apply an automatic pressure and vibration to the appropriate parts of the nail with the movements of the foot.
- the apparatus assists in, from above, making the nail thin, or diminishing the indentations and protrusions on the nail by means of mechanical movements, pressure or vibration by being covered with a material which files or thin out the nail for a period of time during which the apparatus is on the foot.
- the apparatus according to the invention may reduce the need to carry an apparatus such as wire, etc. in some of the patients for a long time with a quick opening on the nails having a curve at the tips or edges thereof, by being applied consecutively or with clip-like structures applied with or without softening the nail.
- nail clips such as half an hour a week, they allow the nail to obtain a flat shape from the top, the end and the sides, and to enable the nail starting to grow by attaching from below not to again be embedded from the edges or top and thereby not to bend.
- it may be applied to one side, so an unnecessary force may be prevented from applying to the opposite side.
- a chemical coated patch, tape etc. may be used in order to soften the nail.
- These units may help the nail to thin out, allow the surface thereof to be improved, and consequently, facilitate the development of a smooth nail attached to its bed, by supporting the clip and pressure-applying units, or by, alone or in combination with them, assisting in releasing the slow- or controlled-release chemicals, etc. by water or sweat. It may help to increase the effectiveness of the clips and to facilitate the application of a nail drill/ sculpturing tool.
- This chemical coated patch, tape, etc. may be applied onto the nail, although it may be applied on thickened tissues such as callus, etc. alone or in combination with the other units. Their structures that are not necessarily changed every day and which perform slow and controlled release and dissolve slowly in water and sweat, will facilitate all kinds of application, especially on the thickened nails.
- a mechanical or battery- operated nail drill/sculpturing tool (8) may be added to the system for improving the deformed nails, the nails detached from its nail bed and the most curved parts on the nail, or for cleaning the underlying nail bed. It is the object to clean the bottom and inside of the nail without completely removing (avulsing) from the nail bed, or to reduce the curved areas over time, and to form a clean and smooth nail bed along which a nail of normal shape, color and thickness is able to advance, using a nail drill/ sculpturing tool (8), a sharp or semi-sharp tool in order to drill small holes on the curved nail surface.
- This nail drill/sculpturing tool (8) will both alleviate the curved thick nail load in front of the solid nail growing from the bottom, and also ensure that the underlying bed becomes clean and suitable for carrying a healthy nail.
- the nail drill/sculpturing tool may be round or semi-round in shape, may be needle-like, pointed or semi-blunt, may be covered with sandpaper, etc., may be produced from different materials, but a way to reach beneath the nail from the top portion thereof will be an auxiliary apparatus to soften the curved parts on the nail surface. It is possible to clean the bed by delivering different liquids into the bed under the nail through these holes, so that the nail growing from below may advance on the clean bed.
- the nail drill/ sculpturing tool may be manual, although it may be rechargeable, battery-operated, etc.
- finger and nail fixing units which are integral, or consist of more than one parts, these units being located either horizontally or vertically, wherein these horizontal or vertical portions may present together, wherein these units expose the top or tip portion, or they may cover the same partially or completely, wherein the pressure of these units is constant or adjustable, the units may provide vibrations, wherein new units may be added to these units as the nail grows, or depending on the position of the deformity on the nail, the number of the units may vary, and wherein the units may be provided with a patch, a tape, and the like which are coated with a chemical, or provided with mechanical tools, in order to soften or thin out the nail.
- These units which apply pressure on the nail matrix or bed, may be only silicone, but also they may be coated with a thinner or different chemicals or mechanical materials such as a file, etc. In the case of more than one units, they may also be covered with the same or different material.
- the purpose of this chemical and/or material is to thin out and shape the nail, remove the fungus, correct the color of the nail, improve an underlying disease, etc.
- the major apparatus of the invention may be used alone or in addition to other treatments (wire, lotion, etc.) in pincer nail deformity by placing the units that apply internal pressure vertically.
- the toe/finger grip can be fixed by a mechanism, the width of which may be adjusted from one or both sides, or the pressure applying units may contain more than one layers, or the thickness and hardness of the material applied may vary.
- one or more attachments and handles such as clips, are placed on the tip or edge of the nail in order to flatten the bulges or protrusions near or on the nail to improve the deformed parts having front or lateral curved portions at the tip of the nail which starts to grow smoothly in an attached manner from below and to assist in advancement of the normal nail along the path without any ingrowth.
- these attachments such as a clip etc. may be applied alone for a short period of time, or they may be applied with a pressure applicator of silicon.
- the curved, inward-oriented and ingrown parts on the nail, especially at the tip and edge of the nail will not block the smooth nail growing from below and will prevent normally growing nail from bulging and growing upwards in a laminated manner, and the nail will be allowed to grow in a flat manner to the farthest tip without bulging.
- the outer covers (1) fasten the major apparatus of the invention on the hand/foot. Internal units that correct the nail deformities are fixed to one of the covers.
- the outer covers (1) of the apparatus are connected and fixed to each other by means of the adjustable joining straps (6).
- the outer covers (1) may be made of materials such as silicone, plastic, polyurethane, etc.
- the joining straps (6) are adjustable and enable the outer covers to be closed. They assist in the correct placement of the fixing units (2, 4, 5) and chemical-containing tapes (9) or mechanical thinners which are added when necessary, are released in a slow and controlled manner with sweat and water, and soften and thin out the nail or surrounding callus tissue.
- the fixing units (2, 4, 5) placed inside the outer cover apply an adjustable pressure on the nails and thus, the deformities on the nail are corrected.
- the number of the fixing units (2, 4, 5) may be increased as needed, the fixing units may affixed into, or removed from, the apparatus, or may present in a constant number.
- the fixing units (2, 4, 5) may be coated with a chemical or mechanical material (3) as needed.
- the fixing units (2, 4, 5) may be located either vertically or horizontally, as needed.
- the inventive apparatus system may accompany the nail from the matrix part from where the nail originates (with the major apparatus), opens its path, facilitates its proper growth on that path (by means of a clip and nail drill tool), thins out and sculpture the nail (by means of slow-melting chemical-coated tapes by sweat and water), help the nail attach to the bed. In this way, it may help almost all deformed and thickened nails, thin but detached nails, asymmetrically growing nails, the unilateral growth of which is slow, and nails having curved edges.
- the major apparatus of the invention may apply pressure to the nail matrix localized inside and underneath the proximal nail fold which enables the formation of the nail either in one direction or only in the middle or across the entire matrix area. However, it may also apply pressure on the nail alone or in combination therewith. It may also exert pressure on the matrix, proximal nail fold, and nail.
- the object is to stimulate the nail to be grown by attaching to its bed by stimulating the matrix area mechanically and also to enable the unilateral non-functional matrix to grow equally by being stimulated from that direction.
- This apparatus may mechanically stimulate the matrix part as being placed in the shoe when the patient walks, although it may stimulate the same regions by applying vibration by means of electricity, battery, etc.
- This apparatus is applied to the points where the nail folds and the nail meet, either horizontally or sometimes vertically, or both from a side or below by means of attachments such as pressure- or vibration-applying fixing units (2, 4, 5) and clips (7) and assist in attaching the nail to its bed, although it will allow the nail detached from the bed to reattach to its bed by being applied to a point or region on the nail plate in onycholysis cases. In this way, it will assist in preventing the fimgus, bacteria, etc. from colonizing into this part by preventing the nail bed from being kept open.
- the major apparatus of the present invention is fixed by a unilaterally-, or bilaterally- collapsible, i.e. adjustable system, in order to adapt to the fingers of various widths.
- the invention is a group of tools which will provide, or help, treatment for different nail deformities that are still resistant to the treatment, wherein this group of tools will thin out the nail, clean the nail bed without an operational step, enable a healthy nail development, and allow this nail to grow along the nail bed.
- the inventive apparatus made of silicone applied for congenital nail deformity (congenital malalignmanet of great toe) is worn in shoes and socks for 1 and a half hours every day, and the proximal nail fold was applied a pressure at every step, thereby stimulating normal nail growth from below at the end of the 2 nd month.
- the deformed part at the tip reduced the effect of the major apparatus as the nail grows.
- a chemical-containing patch containing urea, sorbitol and tannic acid mixture applied on the nail was used. This patch was left on the nail and daily life continued, including taking a bath.
- the patch was removed, the deformed part at the tip was found to be softened, some part of the nail was opened and some part thereof was cleaned by means of the holes drilled with the nail drill where the nail was folded and the clips applied to this point, and thus the tip began to grow properly.
- the number of fixing units was increased by one at an interval of two months, and pressure was applied to both the proximal nail fold and the nail bed via the nail surface, and it was determined that the normalization of the nail could continue.
- a clip was applied to an ingrown edge of a nail of a normal thickness for 20 minutes per week such that the clip gripped the edge of the nail. During a weekly observation, it was determined that the edge of the nail opened slowly and the discomfort regressed. Except this, no wire, tape and operation were applied. At the end of four weeks, it was determined that the ingrowth on the edge regressed almost completely. The clip was found to be very comfortable due to short application time (20 minutes per week) and no interference with daily activities and wearing shoes.
