Definitions
- the present invention relates to an innovative strapping station, namely a station for the application of a band, referred to as strap, around an object.
- Strapping stations generally comprise a gantry structure with a strapping unit which is designed to form a band ring around the object, recover and pull the band so as to tighten the ring around the object and then weld its two end edges so as to close it stably around the object and finally separate it form the remainder of the band.
- the band is generally fed continuously from a special magazine so that the strapping operations may be cyclically repeated.
- the objects may thus be advantageously sequentially fed to the station by means of a suitable sequential transport system (for example a conveyor belt).
- the maintenance of the known strapping stations is usually complicated by the fact that the assembly formed by the strapping unit is difficult to access owing to its position inside the operating zone of the machine. Moreover, in the case where the station comprises a section of a system for transporting the objects, this section is also difficult to reach by the personnel who are responsible for maintenance because it crosses the operating zone of the station and is at least partially hidden by the latter.
- the general object of the present invention is to provide a strapping station which may be easily maintained and which allows easy access also to the parts of a conveyor device which may be present in its operating zone.
- a further object is to allow in a simple manner the personnel to carry out operations on the conveyor while the station continues to function.
- a strapping station comprising a strapping unit provided with a rectangular frame which is intended to be crossed by an object onto which a strap must be applied when the strapping unit is in its operative position, along one side of the frame there being a strapping head which feeds a strap along the rectangular frame to form a strap ring tightened around the object, characterized in that the strapping unit is suspended from an arm which protrudes from a support to which the arm is rotatably constrained in a cantilevered manner about a vertical axis so that it can be moved away from the said operative position.
- FIG. 1 shows a schematic front elevation view of a station designed according to the invention
- FIG. 1 shows a plan view of the station according to Figure 1 ;
- Figure 3 shows a view, similar to that of Figure 1 , but with the station in a second condition
- Figures 4 and 5 show a front elevation and plan view of the station in a non operative position; - Figure 6 shows a further front elevation view of a station according to the invention.
- Figure 1 shows a strapping station - denoted generally by 10 - which is designed in accordance with the principles of the present invention.
- the station 10 comprises a strapping unit 1 1 which is intended to place straps onto objects 12 arranged in an operating zone 13 of the station.
- the strapping unit 1 1 is provided with a rectangular frame 14 in the form of a surrounding rim which defines a path for guiding the strap which must surround the object to be strapped and which is intended to be passed through by the object on which the strap must be applied.
- the band which forms the strap is usually made of suitable thermoplastic material so as to rapid welding thereof.
- the head comprises inside it a known motorized band displacement mechanism (generally indicated by 16 in Figure 1 ) and a known welding and cutting unit (generally indicated by 17 in Figure 1 ).
- the head 15 with these internal elements is however substantially of the known type and will not be further described or shown, being able to be easily imagined by the person skilled in the art.
- such a head may be of the type described in EP3351479.
- the head 15 may receive a band strip 18 by means of a feed path 19 and, upon command, may convey this strip along the annular path defined by the frame 14 to form the strap ring.
- the strapping head performs the operations of delivery, recovery and pulling of the strap which is fed by the head along the rectangular frame.
- the head feeds the strap along the annular path defined by the frame so that, after following this path, the front end of the strip reaches again the head 15 and can be fixed therein.
- This action is generally known in the technical sector of strapping machines as the "delivery” step.
- the mechanism 16 (for example comprising motorized rollers) then takes up the band by causing it to move backwards, so as to tighten the band ring on the object in the operating zone 13 ("recovery" step) and pull it with the desired tension on the object (“pulling” step).
- the head operates the welding and cutting unit 17 so as to close the ring and cut the strap thus formed from the remainder of the band and tighten it around the object. The head is thus ready for a new strapping operation.
- the strapping unit 1 1 is suspended from an arm 20 which protrudes from a support 21 to which the arm rotatably constrained in a cantilevered manner about a vertical axis 22 so that it can be moved away from the operative position shown in Figure 1 , namely from the position with the frame in the operating zone 13.
- the strapping unit 1 1 is movable vertically with respect to the support 21.
- this vertical movement is performed by an actuator 23.
- the vertical movement of the strapping unit allows positioning of the strapping unit at the correct height with respect to the object to be strapped.
- the strapping head is placed on the upper side of the frame 14.
- a vertical movement of the strapping unit may thus allow the head to be rested on the top side of the object to be strapped so as to tighten suitably the strap and weld it in position against the object.
- the station 10 also comprises a horizontal surface 24 for supporting an object to be strapped, which extends through the rectangular frame 14 when the strapping unit is in the operative position. Since the frame 14 must surround the object to be strapped, the surface 24 is interrupted opposite the frame (as can be seen in Figure 2) so as to allow the frame to be lowered with its bottom side underneath the said surface.
- Figure 1 also shows an object 12 which is output from the station 10 and onto which two straps 40 are applied in succession by means of the station.
- the horizontal surface 24 comprises a per se known conveyor 25 (for example of the belt or roller type) for moving an object to be strapped through the rectangular frame.
- the objects to be strapped may thus be fed in sequence to the strapping station.
- the vertical movement of the strapping unit also allows the unit to be raised above any obstacles preventing its rotation about the axis 22 and, in particular, above the surface 24 (as shown in Figure 3).
- the support 21 which is arranged on one side of the operating zone of the station, comprises a vertical upright 26 (advantageously rotatable about the axis 22 with respect to a base 27 fixed to the ground), along which there is vertically slidable, upon command, a support carriage 28 from which the arm 20 protrudes laterally, the strapping unit 1 1 being fixed to the end thereof (opposite to the carriage 28).
- the band 18 is supplied from a supply magazine 29 which is preferably rotatable about the axis 22 together with the arm 20 and therefore the head 1 1 .
- the supply magazine 29 may comprise a reel 30 of the band material and a storage device 31 which allows rapid periodic recalling of the band 18 towards the strapping unit 1 1 without the need for a corresponding rapid rotation of the reel 30, which is relatively heavy.
- the storage device 31 advantageously comprises a pair of wind-up pulleys 32, 33 which are elastically movable with respect to each other with a reciprocal relative movement (for example one may be fixed and the other one may be elastically movable).
- the upper pulley 32 may be fixed and the lower pulley 33 may be freely movable vertically.
- the elastic force which tends to move the pulleys away from each other may also be produced by the weight alone of the lower pulley.
- the strap is wound several times between the two pulleys 32, 33 (as can be schematically seen in Figure 5) such that, when the strap is pulled rapidly towards the strapping head 1 1 , the two pulleys may move towards each other with a low inertia and provide the necessary amount of strap to the strapping head without the reel 30 having to rotate suddenly. During the pauses between one strapping operation and the next one, the two pulleys may then move away from each other again, retrieving a new section of band from the reel 30 which rotates slowly.
- the strapping unit 1 1 When the strapping unit 1 1 is to be moved away from the operative position, it is merely required to rotate the arm 20 about the vertical axis 22 as shown in Figure 4, if necessary after suitably raising the strapping unit (as schematically shown in Figure 3). This rotation may be performed manually or may be suitably motorized.
- the magazine 29 is also designed to rotate together with the arm 20 (for example if it is rotationally integral with the upright 26) no stress acts on the band 18 and the zone for accessing the strapping unit when it is not in the operative position is kept clear.
- a sensor (generally indicated by 34 in Figure 1) may be provided, said sensor detecting the position of the strapping unit so as to deactivate operation of the strapping unit when this unit is not its operative position.
- the sensor may be for example a simple end-of-travel switch (of the mechanical, optical, magnetic or other type), which is operated only when the strapping unit is in its operative position, for authorizing operation of the station.
- the station 10 may also comprise two operative positions arranged in two different angular positions of the strapping unit about the vertical axis 22.
- these two operative positions may be arranged at 180° with respect to each other around the vertical axis 22.
- a surface 24 with a conveyor 25, where appropriate, may be present.
- the two conveyors 25 may be arranged parallel to each other at least along the sections affected by the respective operative positions of the strapping unit.
- the non-operative position may be for example an intermediate position between the two operative positions.
- the non-operative position may be at 90° with respect to the operative positions and therefore with the frame 14 between the two conveyors 25 and parallel thereto.
- one of the two conveyors 25 may form a back-up line which is activated in the case of a malfunction or the need to carry out maintenance on the other line. It is merely required to move the strapping unit onto the back-up line and deviate the products from the main line to the back-up line in order to continue the strapping operations.
- the classic bulky gantry form is avoided and the structure of the station is simpler and less costly and easier to maintain. Moreover, it possible to create easily and at a lower cost back-up lines and it is thus possible to continue the strapping operations also in the event of malfunctions and/or the need to carry out maintenance on the main line.
- the station may comprise a different magazine for supplying the strap, which may also be separate from the system for rotation of the strapping head.
- Suitable mechanical locking means for example, bolts
- Suitable mechanical locking means may be provided for being able to ensure that the desired operative and non-operative positions of the strapping unit are stably maintained.
