Definitions
- the invention relates to the field of the automotive industry, and more particularly to a motor vehicle body part comprising a transparent or translucent element.
- An element is called transparent when it is allowed to pass through the light in the visible range. It is considered that an element having a transmittance of about 90% is transparent. An element is described as translucent when it allows itself to be traversed by the light in the visible domain, but without allowing to clearly distinguish the objects. It is considered that an element having a transmittance of about 60% is translucent.
- the transmittance of a material is the fraction of the luminous flux passing through it.
- the transmittance represents the ratio of the light intensity transmitted by the material to the incident light intensity.
- the chrome strips running along the side of the vehicle, the sill protectors, the logo of the brand, the door handles hubcaps, the hulls of mirrors are these elements of style whose design is the subject of special care on the part of the designers of the vehicle.
- Body parts are known from plastic molding, and on which a transparent element is attached in a housing provided for this purpose.
- insert element on a part is also known body parts from plastic molding, overmolding one or more inserts.
- inserts are preformed parts incorporated in, and / or integral with, said molded part which generally serve to reinforce said molded part and / or the subsequent fixing of mechanical elements.
- the transparent material used to make a transparent element must allow optimal diffusion of the light passing through it, while having a capacity to absorb quite significant shocks.
- the transparent materials used in the automobile are PMMA (headlamp optics, excluding shock zone) and polycarbonate (PC).
- the unfilled polypropylene elements have thermal properties different from those of polypropylenes used in bodywork parts. This causes sizing errors, constraints at interfaces, causing variable geometries and detachments, among others.
- the invention aims to overcome these disadvantages by using a transparent or translucent element made from amorphous polyolefin, such as COC or COP.
- the object of the invention relates to a body part of a motor vehicle comprising at least one molded insert based on amorphous polyolefin.
- amorphous polyolefin makes it possible to obtain a very good chemical adhesion to the bodywork part made of polypropylene, and thus allows the insertion a transparent or translucent element by overmolding. In addition, such adhesion, allows the transmission of forces of the transparent element overmolded to the main body of the polypropylene part.
- an insert alone does not have satisfactory resistance to impact, and an insert on a part is also easily damaged during an impact.
- the advantage of using an overmoulded insert is, surprisingly, that overmolding makes it possible to transmit the energy of a shock to the insert in the main body of the polypropylene part. It is the overmolding and the good adhesion to the interface between the polyolefin insert and the rest of the polypropylene part, which makes it possible to obtain such a mechanical effect.
- amorphous polyolefin elements are very resistant and can be folded (naturally deformable) without damaging the aesthetics or the geometry of the room. This property comes from the amorphous nature of the polyolefin.
- the thermal properties (shrinkage, thermal expansion) of the amorphous polyolefin elements are compatible with those of polypropylene, in particular filled polypropylene as used in the automotive field, which makes it possible to avoid dimensional problems during baking steps of the paint chain for example.
- an amorphous polyolefin element is painted in the same way as a polypropylene part because its chemical compatibility to the components of the paint is equivalent.
- the transparent insert is polycarbonate (PC) or PMMA, it is not possible to varnish or paint with the same products as polypropylene (PP), because the adhesion of these products would not be the same. even on polypropylene (PP) parts and PC or PMMA parts.
- the bodywork part may further comprise one or more of the following features, taken alone or in combination:
- the amorphous polyolefin has a transmittance substantially greater than 50%
- the part comprises a main body of a plastic material, said insert being partially overmolded in the main body;
- the insert comprises a surface intended to be visible from the outside of the vehicle and an opposite surface, at least one of said surfaces not being covered by the plastics material of the main body, preferably the two surfaces being not entirely covered by the plastic material of the main body.
- the main body is made of a plastic material based on polypropylene
- the insert is made of a material based on cyclic polyolefin
- the insert is made of a material based on at least one of the following materials: cycloolefin copolymers and cycloolefin polymers;
- the insert is made of a transparent or translucent amorphous polyolefin material comprising at least one of the following additives: an elastomeric filler, crushed / short glass fibers, a dye;
- the piece forms a front or rear bumper for a motor vehicle, a tailgate, a roof, a door or a wing.
- the invention also relates to a motor vehicle comprising at least one bodywork part according to the invention.
- the invention also relates to a first method of manufacturing a part according to the invention, in which:
- a transparent or translucent insert is produced by means of an amorphous polyolefin molding process in a first mold
- the insert is placed in a second mold
- a polypropylene-based plastic material is injected into the second mold in order to overmold the insert, while protecting the two surfaces of the insert intended to allow the light to pass.
- the invention also relates to a second method for manufacturing a part according to the invention, in which:
- a transparent or translucent insert is produced by means of an amorphous polyolefin injection molding process in a mold comprising a mold cavity of the insert delimited by mobile wedges; then, after movement of the holds;
- a polypropylene-based plastic material is injected into the mold, comprising a molding cavity of a main body of the part, in order to overmould the insert, while protecting the two surfaces of the insert intended to let the light.
- FIG. 1 illustrates an example of a motor vehicle according to the invention, comprising a set of bodywork parts according to the invention, provided with a transparent or translucent insert.
- the body part 10 may be a front bumper or rear (not visible in the figure), a tailgate, a roof, a door or a wing of a motor vehicle 40.
- the body part 10 comprises a zone for passing, at least partially, the light from a light source placed behind said zone.
- the part 10 comprises at this area a transparent or translucent element.
- the transparent or translucent element is overmolded in the part 10, and thus constitutes an overmolded insert 20.
- This overmolded insert 20 is transparent or translucent, and is made of a plastic material based on amorphous polyolefin.
- An amorphous polyolefin is a chemical compound whose atoms do not respect any order at medium and great distance, which distinguishes it from crystallized compounds.
- the amorphous character gives the polyolefin a property of transparency.
- an amorphous polyolefin having a transmittance chosen according to the desired use is used.
- an amorphous polyolefin having a transmittance can be used:
- the insert 20 has a surface intended to be visible from the outside of the vehicle (surface facing the outside of the vehicle) and an opposite surface (surface facing the vehicle interior).
- the insert 20 is partially overmolded so that at least one of the two surfaces (preferably the surface intended to be visible) is not completely covered by the overmolding material (polypropylene of the main body 30), in order to leave pass at least part of the light.
- the opposite surface (surface facing the inside of the vehicle) may be covered directly or indirectly by the material of the main body 30.
- the insert 20 by interposing between the surface and the material of the main body 30 a light guide.
- the light transmitted to the insert 20 through the guide could cross the insert 20 to the outside of the vehicle.
- the light transmitted to the insert 20 through the guide could pass through the insert 20 to the outside of the vehicle, and the opposite surface (inwardly facing surface of the vehicle) could be directly in contact with the material of the vehicle.
- overmolding polypropylene of the main body 30).
- At least one of these surfaces undergoes a treatment, such as a graining, in order to modify the transparency or translucency of the insert (and not the amorphous polyolefin).
- a treatment such as a graining
- the part 10 thus comprises a main body 30, the insert 20 being overmolded in the main body 30.
- the main body 30 is made of a plastic material based on polypropylene (PP). In one example, this material is opaque and / or black in color.
- PP polypropylene
- the amorphous polyolefin-based plastic material makes it possible to respect the need for transparency or translucency, in order to allow the light coming from the light source to pass at least partially, and the need for mechanical resistance, substantially equivalent to that of the body. principal 30.
- the insert 20 is made of a material based on cyclic polyolefin.
- the insert 20 is made of a material based on at least one of the following materials: cycloolefin copolymers (COC) and cycloolefin polymers (COP).
- COC cycloolefin copolymers
- COP cycloolefin polymers
- additives to the material of the insert 20.
- at least one of the following additives may be added:
- an elastomeric filler in order to increase the plasticity of the insert 20, and thus to be able to deform it more easily, to improve its mechanical properties on impact and also its thermal properties;
- the invention also relates to a motor vehicle 40 having at least one body part 10 according to the invention.
- the invention also relates to a first method of manufacturing a part 10 according to the invention.
- the first method is a molding method comprising the following steps:
- the insert 20 is produced by means of an amorphous polyolefin molding process in a first mold
- the insert 20 is placed in a second mold, by means of a robot for example;
- a plastics material based on polypropylene is injected into the second mold, in order to overmold the insert 20, while protecting the two surfaces intended to allow the light to pass (in order to prevent the polypropylene-based plastic material from covering these surfaces).

Description
- la polyoléfine amorphe possède une transmittance sensiblement supérieure à 50% ;
- la pièce comporte un corps principal en une matière plastique, ledit insert étant partiellement surmoulé dans le corps principal ;
- le corps principal est réalisé en une matière plastique à base de polypropylène ;
- au moins l’une desdites surfaces de l’insert est grainée ;
- l’insert est réalisé dans une matière à base de polyoléfine cyclique ;
- l’insert est réalisé dans une matière à base de l’une au moins des matières suivantes : cyclo-oléfines-copolymères et cyclo-oléfines-polymères ;
- l’insert est réalisé dans une matière à base de polyoléfine amorphe transparent ou translucide comportant au moins l’un des additifs suivants : une charge élastomère, des fibres de verre broyées/courtes, un colorant ;
- on réalise un insert transparent ou translucide au moyen d’un procédé de moulage de polyoléfine amorphe dans un premier moule ;
- on dispose l’insert dans un second moule ;
- on réalise un insert transparent ou translucide au moyen d’un procédé de moulage par injection de polyoléfine amorphe dans un moule comportant une cavité de moulage de l’insert délimitée par des cales mobiles ; puis, après mouvement des cales ;
- sensiblement supérieure à 50%, pour une diffusion de la lumière vers l’extérieur du véhicule tout en rendant impossible de voir vers l’intérieur du véhicule ;
- sensiblement supérieure à 60%, pour une diffusion de la lumière vers l’extérieur du véhicule moins diffuse ;
- une charge élastomère afin d’augmenter la plasticité de l’insert 20, et de pouvoir ainsi le déformer plus facilement, améliorer ses propriétés mécaniques à l’impact et aussi ses propriétés thermiques ;
- des fibres de verre broyées ou courtes, afin d’augmenter la résistance mécanique de l’insert 20 ;
- on réalise l’insert 20 au moyen d’un procédé de moulage de polyoléfine amorphe dans un premier moule ;
- on dispose l’insert 20 dans un second moule, au moyen d’un robot par exemple ;
