Definitions

  • the invention relates to a method for removing labels from plastic packages with labels adhered to the whole surface thereof.
  • Packages made of polyethylene terephthalate, PET or PET type are commonly physically or chemically recycled as described in a number of patents, for example CZ 301 118 B6, US 3544622, US 4092230, CZ PV 2006-313 and others.
  • the physical recycling of PET is used more widely. In this crushed PET packages are being washed in warm water alone or with the addition of additives. Labels of packages (bottles) of non-alcoholic beverage which are only spot-glued either with water-soluble or hydrolysable adhesives used are easily removable in this process.
  • Packages made of polyethylene terephthalate, PET or PET type, are increasingly being used in household chemicals as well, such as products for dishwashing by hand, kitchen and bathroom cleaning products and body care products such as shower gels, hair shampoos, and similar. According to valid laws the labels of these packages must be attached firmly and clearly legible throughout the lifetime that is until the content of the package has been used up. These labels cannot be removed from such PET packages either by washing in warm water alone or in water with the addition additives. Such packages must then be disposed of by landfilling or incineration.
  • the method for removing labels from plastic packages consists in the fact that the waste PET package characterized by biaxial orientation and a label adhered to the whole surface thereof is heated so that a release of the biaxial orientation occurs and due to shrinkage forces the release of the label adhered to the whole surface from the waste packages occurs.
  • This process can also be applied to PETG packages that are not biaxially oriented. Elere, due to the low glass transition temperature (Tg), the collapse of the shape of the package and also the release of the label adhered to the whole surface thereof occurs.
  • Tg glass transition temperature
  • This process can also be used for PET packages.
  • the heating of the plastic packages can be carried out with a warm fluid, preferably ordinary water or hot air.
  • the heating of the plastic packages can also be carried out in a batch or continuous device.
  • the stirring can be done manually or motorically.
  • the device may be horizontal or vertical.
  • a 10 liter vessel was filled with ordinary water to 80% of its volume and this water has been brought to boil.
  • it is a vertical stirring vessel.
  • PET packages with a label adhered to the whole surface thereof were gradually inserted and immersed in the boiling water. Care has been taken to fill these waste packages with water and thus they dropped to the bottom of the vessel due to the density of the PET material.
  • the vessel with the packages has been stirred for at least 3 minutes. The separation of the labels and shrinkage of the packages occurred. The separated labels were separated by hand using a strainer. Then the PET packages without the labels were removed. The water from these was poured back into the vessel and this water has been brought to boil again to carry out another separation of the labels from the PET packages by the same process.

  • a 10 liter hot air drier with forced air circulation was used. This drier was heated to 100 °C. PET packages with a label adhered to the whole surface thereof were gradually inserted into the drier. The packages were heated for at least 10 minutes. The separation of the labels and shrinkage of the packages occurred. The separated labels were picked manually. Then the PET packages without the labels were removed.

  • a horizontal 10 liter vessel was filled with ordinary water to 80% of its volume and this water has been brought to boil by external heating.
  • it is a horizontal stirring vessel.
  • PET packages with a label adhered to the whole surface thereof were gradually inserted and immersed in 90 °C hot water with the rotation of the vessel turned off. Care has been taken to fill these waste packages with water and thus they dropped to the bottom of the vessel due to the density of the PET material.

The separated labels were separated by hand using a strainer. Then the PET packages without the labels were removed. • the invention relates to a method for recycling waste packages characterized by oriented polymeric structures and having labels adhered to the whole surface thereof.
  • the product is plastic packages with derelaxed orientation and released labels. This applies in particular to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or PETG packages. After the mechanical removal of the released labels the plastic packages can be recycled physically or chemically according to known processes.
