Abstract
第1及び第2の光学素子を有し、第1の光学素子は、第1の液晶素子と、第1の液晶素子上に形成され、外部からの入射光が入射する光入射面及び第1の液晶素子によって反射された反射光が出射する第1の光出射面を有する第1の透光体と、第1の液晶素子を透過した透過光が出射する第2の光出射面を有する第2の透光体とを有し、第2の光学素子は、第2の液晶素子と、第2の液晶素子上に形成され、かつ第1の光出射面に接合された第3の透光体とを有する。
Description
本発明は、液晶層を含んだ光学素子からなる光学装置に関する。
従来から、液晶素子を用いた液晶パネルや液晶シャッタ、光路切替装置などの光学装置が一般化されている。例えば、特許文献1には、一対の電極基体間に液晶を挟持した液晶セル、電圧の印加により液晶の配列を制御する配向膜、及び偏光板を有する光学制御装置が開示されている。
例えば、光学装置は、光源と共に光源システムを構成する。また、液晶を用いた光学装置においては、電圧の供給によって液晶素子中の液晶分子の配向状態を調節する駆動を行い、光源からの入力光に対する液晶素子の光透過条件を調節する。これによって、光学装置から取り出される光の光量を調節し、輝度の調節や光路の切替などの種々の光学処理を行う。
このような光学装置においては、装置内での光損失が少ないこと、すなわち高効率で光が取り出されることが好ましい。また、光学装置は、高い駆動応答性を有することが好ましい。
本発明は上記した点に鑑みてなされたものであり、高い駆動応答性を有し、高効率な光取り出しを行うことが可能な光学装置を提供することを課題の1つとしている。
請求項1に記載の発明は、第1及び第2の光学素子を有し、第1の光学素子は、第1の液晶素子と、第1の液晶素子上に形成され、外部からの入射光が入射する光入射面及び第1の液晶素子によって反射された反射光が出射する第1の光出射面を有する第1の透光体と、第1の液晶素子を透過した透過光が出射する第2の光出射面を有する第2の透光体とを有し、第2の光学素子は、第2の液晶素子と、第2の液晶素子上に形成され、かつ第1の光出射面に接合された第3の透光体とを有することを特徴とする。
以下に本発明の実施例について詳細に説明する。
図1(a)は、実施例1に係る光源システム10の構成を示すブロック図である。光源システム10は、光源11、光源11からの光を光学的に処理する光学装置12、光学装置12によって処理された光を出力する出力装置13からなる。例えば、光源11は、発光ダイオードや半導体レーザなどの発光装置を含む。また、例えば、出力装置13は、光学装置12からの光を出力先に向けて反射させる反射鏡などを含む。
図1(b)は、光学装置12の模式的な斜視図である。光学装置12は、2つの光学素子(第1及び第2の光学素子)20及び30と、光学素子20及び30を駆動する駆動回路40とを含む。
第1の光学素子20は、液晶分子を含む層状の液晶素子(第1の液晶素子)21と、液晶素子21を挟むように設けられた透光体(第1及び第2の透光体)22及び23とを含む。また、光学素子30は、液晶分子を含む層状の液晶素子(第2の液晶素子)31と、液晶素子31を挟むように設けられた透光体(第3及び第4の透光体)32及び33とを含む。
本実施例においては、光学素子20及び30は、光学素子20の透光体22と光学素子30の透光体32とが接合されることによって、互いに光学的に結合されている。なお、駆動回路40は、液晶素子21及び31を駆動する。
図2は、光学素子20の模式的な斜視図である。まず、液晶素子21は、互いに対向する2つの主面(第1及び第2の主面)S1及びS2を有する。本実施例においては、主面S1は、光源11からの光が入射する表面として機能する。主面S2は、主面S1を透過した光が液晶素子21から出射する表面として機能する。以下においては、主面S1を入射液晶面(第1の液晶面)と称し、主面S2を出射液晶面(第2の液晶面)と称する。換言すれば、液晶素子21は、入射液晶面S1及びこれに対向する出射液晶面S2を有する。
透光体22は、液晶素子21の入射液晶面S1上に形成されている。透光体22は、光源11からの光に対して透光性を有する。透光体22は、例えばガラス材料又は樹脂材料からなる透明な媒体である。本実施例においては、透光体22は、断面が台形の角柱形状を有する。また、透光体22は、当該角柱における台形の下底に対応する側面が液晶素子21の入射液晶面S1上に形成されている。
また、光源11からの光は、透光体22を介して液晶素子21に入射する。透光体22は、光源11からの光が入射する光入射面22Aを有する。光入射面22Aは、入射液晶面S1に対して傾斜している。本実施例においては、入射液晶面S1と光入射面22Aとがなす角度は、約70°である。
また、本実施例においては、光入射面22Aから入射した光の少なくとも一部が液晶素子21の入射液晶面S1によって反射され、透光体22から出射される。透光体22は、入射液晶面S1によって反射された光が出射する光出射面(第1の光出射面)22Bを有する。本実施例においては、透光体22は、当該角柱における台形の脚に対応する2つの側面の一方が光入射面22Aであり、他方が光出射面22Bである。
また、透光体23は、液晶素子21の出射液晶面S2上に形成されている。透光体23は、光源11からの光に対して透光性を有する。透光体23は、例えばガラス材料又は樹脂材料からなる透明な媒体である。本実施例においては、透光体23は、断面が三角形の角柱形状を有する。また、透光体22は、当該三角柱における三角形の最大長さの辺に対応する側面の1つが液晶素子21の出射液晶面S1上に形成されている。
また、液晶素子21の入射液晶面S1を透過して出射液晶面S2から出射された光は、透光体23を介して出射される。透光体23は、液晶素子21を透過した光が出射する光出射面(第2の光出射面)23Aを有する。なお、透光体22の光入射面22A及び透光体23の光出射面23Aは、互いに平行に配置されている。また、例えば、透光体22及び23は、1.76の光屈折率を有する。
なお、本実施例においては、液晶素子21は、全体として平板形状を有し、また矩形の上面形状を有する。また、液晶素子21の入射液晶面S1及び出射液晶面S2は、互いに平行に形成されている。
以下においては、液晶素子21の入射液晶面S1内における透光体23の光入射面22Aに沿った方向をx軸方向(液晶素子21の幅方向)と称する。また、液晶素子21の入射液晶面S1内におけるx軸方向に垂直な方向、本実施例においては透光体22の光入射面22Aから光出射面22Bに向かう方向をy軸方向(液晶素子21の長さ方向)と称する。また、x軸及びy軸方向の両方に直交する方向をz軸方向(液晶素子21の奥行方向又は厚さ方向)と称する。
なお、本実施例においては、光学素子21は、光源11からの光がy軸及びz軸方向の成分のみで入射されるように構成及び配置されている。すなわち、光学素子21に入射される光の主成分(主光軸)は、x軸方向の成分を持たず、x軸方向に垂直な方向の成分を有する。
図3(a)は、液晶素子21の模式的な上面図である。図3(a)は、液晶素子21の入射液晶面S1を模式的に示す図である。また、図3(b)は、液晶素子21の模式的な断面図である。図3(b)は、図3(a)のV-V線に沿った断面図である。図3(a)及び(b)を用いて液晶素子21の構成について説明する。
液晶素子21は、液晶分子MCを含む液晶層21Aと、液晶層21Aを挟んで互いに対向して形成された配向膜(第1及び第2の配向膜)21B及び21Cと、配向膜21B上に形成された駆動電極(第1の駆動電極)21Dとを含む。
なお、本実施例においては、液晶素子21の入射液晶面S1は、液晶層21Aの透光体22側の表面であり、出射液晶面S2は液晶層21Aの透光体23側の表面である。また、本実施例においては、透光体22は入射液晶面S1側の配向膜21B上(本実施例においては駆動電極21D上)に形成されている。また、透光体23は出射液晶面S2側の配向膜21C上に形成されている。
液晶層21Aは、例えば液晶分子MCとして棒状のネマティック液晶を含む。配向膜21B及び21Cは、例えば、配向処理が施された膜状のポリイミドからなる。配向膜21B及び21Cは、光源11からの光に対して透光性を有する。液晶層21A内における液晶分子MCは、配向膜21B及び21Cによってラビングされている。例えば、液晶層21Aは、非駆動時、すなわち駆動電極21Dによって電界が印加されていない状態では1.52の光屈折率を有する。
本実施例においては、液晶分子MCは、非駆動時においては入射液晶面S1側(配向膜21B側)と出射側液晶面S2側との間で互いに長軸方向(ネマティック液晶の分子長軸方向)が直交するねじれ配向となるようにラビングされている。具体的には、例えば、液晶分子MCは、入射液晶面S1側ではその長軸方向がy軸方向(第1の方向)に沿って配向され、出射液晶面S2側ではx軸方向(第2の方向)に沿って配向されている。
また、駆動電極21Dは、光源11からの光に対して透光性を有する。駆動電極21Dは、配向膜21B上において、y軸方向すなわち光源11からの光の入射方向に沿って延びるストライプ状の一対の電極(第1及び第2の電極)E1及びE2からなる。本実施例においては、電極E1及びE2は、ITOやIZOなどの透明導電性酸化膜からなる。
また、本実施例においては、電極E1及びE2は、配向膜21B上において、そのストライプ部が交互に噛み合うように櫛歯状に形成されている。具体的には、電極E1は、配向膜21B上において光入射面22Aから光出射面22Bに向かって延びるストライプ部(櫛歯部)を有する。また、電極E2は、配向膜21B上において光出射部22Bから光入射部22Aに向かって延びるストライプ部(櫛歯部)を有する。
本実施例においては、駆動回路40は、電極E1及びE2間に駆動信号DS1として交流電圧を印加する。これによって、液晶層21Aの入射液晶面S1の近傍には、x軸方向に沿った電界が生ずる。
図4(a)は、非駆動時、すなわち駆動電極21Dに駆動信号DS1が供給されていない状態における液晶層21A内の液晶分子MCの配向状態を模式的に示す図である。また、図4(b)は、非駆動時における光学素子20内の光の進路を模式的に示す図である。
非駆動時においては、液晶層21Aに電圧が印加されない。従って、図4(a)に示すように、液晶層21A内の液晶分子MCは、配向膜21B及び21Cによってラビングされた配向状態となる。具体的には、入射液晶面S1側の液晶分子MC1はy軸方向(第1の方向)に沿ってラビングされており、出射液晶面S2側の液晶分子MC2はx軸方向(第2の方向)に沿ってラビングされている。
また、本実施例においては、透光体22及び23は、非駆動時には液晶層21Aよりも高い光屈折率を有する。また、透光体22の光入射面22Aは、液晶素子21の入射側液晶面S1に対して傾斜している。従って、非駆動時においては、光源11からの入射光L1は、光入射面22Aを介して透光体22に入射した後、液晶素子21の入射側液晶面S1において全反射を起こす。
従って、非駆動時の光学素子21に光源11から入射光L1を入射させると、図4(b)に示すように、入射光L1は液晶素子21を透過せず、入射液晶面S1によって反射された後、反射光L2として透光体22の光出射面22Bから出射される。
図5(a)は、駆動時、すなわち駆動電極21Dに駆動信号DS1が供給された状態における液晶分子MC1及びMC2の配向状態を模式的に示す図である。また、図5(b)は、駆動時における光学素子20内の光の進路を模式的に示す図である。
駆動時においては、液晶層21Aに電圧が印加されることで、液晶分子MC1及びMC2は印加された電界に応じてラビング状態が変化する。具体的には、液晶層21Aの入射液晶面S1の近傍においてx軸方向の電界が生ずることで、入射液晶面S1側の液晶分子MC1がx軸方向に沿って配向される。
この状態で光源11から入射光L1が入射されると、図5(b)に示すように、その一部が入射液晶面S1において全反射を起こし、反射光L2として透光体22の光出射面22Bから出射される。一方、入射光L1の一部は入射側液晶面S1を透過し、液晶素子21内を進んで透光体23に入射する。この液晶素子21を透過した光は、透過光L3として透光体23の光出射面23Bから出射される。
例えば、本実施例においては、反射光L2は、入射光L1のうちのP偏光成分(第1の偏光成分)であり、透過光L3はS偏光成分(第2の偏光成分)である。これは、液晶分子MC1の配向状態によって、P偏光成分とS偏光成分とに対する液晶層21Aの光屈折率が互いに異なることによる。
具体的には、本実施例においては、透光体22は、駆動電極21Dへの電圧の印加時において、入射光L1のP偏光成分に対しては液晶層21Aよりも大きな屈折率を有し、S偏光成分に対しては液晶層21Dよりも小さな屈折率を有する。なお、P偏光成分は、入射光L1のうち、駆動時の液晶分子MC1の配向方向(第2の方向)に直交する方向、すなわち液晶分子MC2の配向方向(第1の方向)に電界方向(偏光方向)を有する偏光成分である。また、S偏光成分は、入射光L1のうち、液晶分子MC1の配向方向に電界方向(偏光方向)を有する偏光成分である。
従って、本実施例においては、入射光L1のP偏光成分は入射液晶面S1において全反射を起こす一方で、S偏光成分は入射液晶面S1を透過する。このように光学素子20の内部部材、特に透光体22及び液晶層21Aの光屈折率及び入射光L1の入射角度を設計することで、容易に入射光L1を分離することができる。また、反射光L2及び透過光L3の両方を利用するため、入射光L1のほとんどが取り出される。また、透光体22の光入射面22Aと透光体23の光出射面23Aとを互いに平行に配置することで、透過光L3の大部分を取り出すことができ、光の取り出し効率が向上する。
図6(a)は、光学素子30の模式的な斜視図である。図6(b)は、光学素子30の光学素子20に対する配置構成を模式的に示す図である。本実施例においては、光学素子30の液晶素子31、並びに透光体32及び33は、光学素子20の液晶素子21、並びに透光体22及び23と同様の構成を有する。
まず、液晶素子31は、互いに対向する2つの主面(第3及び第4の主面)S3及びS4を有する。本実施例においては、主面S3は、光源11及び光学素子20からの光(入射光L1及び反射光L2)が入射する表面として機能する。主面S4は、主面S3を透過した光が液晶素子31から出射する表面として機能する。以下においては、主面S3を入射液晶面(第3の液晶面)と称し、主面S4を出射液晶面(第4の液晶面)と称する。換言すれば、液晶素子31は、入射液晶面S2及びこれに対向する出射液晶面S4を有する。
透光体32は、液晶素子31の入射液晶面S3側の配向膜31C上に形成されている。透光体32は、光源11からの光に対して透光性を有する。透光体32は、例えばガラス材料又は樹脂材料からなる透明な媒体である。本実施例においては、透光体32は、断面が台形の角柱形状を有する。また、透光体32は、当該角柱における台形の下底に対応する側面が液晶素子31の入射液晶面S3上に形成されている。
また、透光体32は、図6(b)に示すように、光学素子20における透光体22の光出射面22Bに接合されている。従って、光学素子20からの反射光L2は透光体32を介して液晶素子31の入射液晶面S3に入射する。透光体32は、光学素子20からの反射光L2が入射する光入射面(第2の光入射面)32Aを有する。
また、光入射面32Aから入射した光の少なくとも一部は液晶素子31の入射液晶面S3によって反射され、透光体32から出射される。透光体32は、入射液晶面S3によって反射された光が出射する光出射面(第2の光出射面)32Bを有する。本実施例においては、透光体32は、当該角柱における台形の脚に対応する2つの側面の一方が光入射面32Aであり、他方が光出射面32Bである。
また、透光体33は、液晶素子31の出射液晶面S4上に形成されている。透光体33は、光源11及び光学素子20からの光に対して透光性を有する。透光体33は、例えばガラス材料又は樹脂材料からなる透明な媒体である。本実施例においては、透光体33は、断面が三角形の角柱形状を有する。また、透光体32は、当該三角柱における三角形の最大長さの辺に対応する側面の1つが液晶素子31の出射液晶面S4上に形成されている。
また、液晶素子31の入射液晶面S4を透過して出射液晶面S4から出射された光は、透光体33を介して出射される。透光体33は、液晶素子31を透過した光が出射する光出射面(第2の光出射面)33Aを有する。
図7(a)は、液晶素子31の模式的な上面図である。図7(a)は、液晶素子31の入射液晶面S3を模式的に示す図である。また、図7(b)は、液晶素子31の模式的な断面図である。図7(b)は、図7(a)のW-W線に沿った断面図である。図7(a)及び(b)を用いて液晶素子31の構成について説明する。
液晶素子31は、液晶素子21と同様に、液晶分子MCを含む液晶層31Aと、液晶層31Aを挟んで互いに対向して形成された配向膜(第3及び第4の配向膜)31B及び31Cと、配向膜31B上に形成された駆動電極(第2の駆動電極)31Dとを含む。
なお、本実施例においては、液晶素子31の入射液晶面S3は、液晶層31Aの透光体32側の表面であり、出射液晶面S4は液晶層31Aの透光体33側の表面である。また、本実施例においては、透光体32は入射液晶面S3側の配向膜31B上(本実施例においては駆動電極31D上)に形成されている。また、透光体33は出射液晶面S4側の配向膜41C上に形成されている。
液晶層31Aは、例えば液晶分子MCとして棒状のネマティック液晶を含む。配向膜31B及び31Cは、例えば、配向処理が施された膜状のポリイミドからなる。配向膜31B及び31Cは、光学素子20からの光に対して透光性を有する。液晶層31A内における液晶分子MCは、配向膜31B及び31Cによってラビングされている。
また、駆動電極31Dは、光源11及び光学素子20からの光に対して透光性を有する。駆動電極31Dは、配向膜31B上において、光学素子20からの光の入射方向に沿って延びるストライプ状の一対の電極(第3及び第4の電極)E3及びE4からなる。本実施例においては、電極E3及びE4は、ITOやIZOなどの透明導電性酸化膜からなる。
また、本実施例においては、電極E3及びE4は、配向膜31B上において、そのストライプ部が交互に噛み合うように櫛歯状に形成されている。具体的には、電極E3は、配向膜31B上において光入射面32Aから光出射面32Bに向かって延びるストライプ部(櫛歯部)を有する。また、電極E4は、配向膜31B上において光出射部32Bから光入射部32Aに向かって延びるストライプ部(櫛歯部)を有する。
本実施例においては、駆動回路40は、電極E3及びE4間に駆動信号DS2として交流電圧を印加する。これによって、液晶層31Aの入射液晶面S3の近傍には、光学素子20からの入射光の入射方向に直交する方向の電界が生ずる。
図8(a)は、非駆動時、すなわち駆動電極31Dに駆動信号DS2が供給されていない状態における液晶層31A内の液晶分子MCの配向状態及び光学素子30内の光の進路を模式的に示す図である。本実施例においては、光学素子30への入射光は、光学素子20によって生成された反射光L2である。
非駆動時においては、液晶層31Aに電圧が印加されない。従って、図8(a)に示すように、液晶層31A内の液晶分子MCは、配向膜31B及び31Cによってラビングされた配向状態となる。具体的には、入射液晶面S3側の液晶分子MC3は液晶層31Aの層内方向において反射光L2の入射方向に沿ってラビングされており、出射液晶面S4側の液晶分子MC4はこれに直交する方向に沿ってラビングされている。
従って、非駆動時においては、光学素子20からの反射光L2は、光入射面32Aを介して透光体32に入射し、液晶素子31の入射側液晶面S3において全反射を起こす。従って、非駆動時の光学素子31に反射光(1次反射光)L2を入射させると、図8(a)に示すように、反射光L2は液晶素子31を透過せず、入射液晶面S3によって反射された後、反射光(2次反射光)L4として透光体32の光出射面32Bから出射される。
図8(b)は、駆動時、すなわち駆動電極31Dに駆動信号DS2が供給された状態における液晶分子MC3及びMC4の配向状態及び光学素子30内の光の進路を模式的に示す図である。
駆動時においては、液晶層21Aに電圧が印加されることで、液晶分子MC3及びMC4は印加された電界に応じてラビング状態が変化する。具体的には、入射液晶面S3側の液晶分子MC3は液晶層31Aの層内方向において反射光L2の入射方向に直交する方向に沿って配向される。
この状態で光学素子20からの反射光L2が入射されると、図8(b)に示すように、その一部が入射液晶面S3において全反射を起こし、反射光L4として透光体32の光出射面32Bから出射される。一方、反射光L2の一部は入射側液晶面S3を透過し、液晶素子31内を進んで透光体33に入射する。この液晶素子31を透過した光は、透過光L5として透光体33の光出射面33Bから出射される。例えば、本実施例においては、反射光L4は、反射光L2のうちのP偏光成分であり、透過光L5はS偏光成分である。
図9は、光学装置12の光学素子20及び30内の光の進路を模式的に示す図である。上記した光学素子20及び30においては、液晶素子21及び31の各々の駆動構成、すなわち液晶素子21及び31への電圧の印加状態を制御することで、光源11(外部)からの入射光L1を受けて、3つの出力光を得ることができる。具体的には、図9に示すように、本実施例においては、外部出力光として、光学素子20の液晶素子21を透過した透過光L3、光学素子20から光学素子30に入射して液晶素子31によって反射された反射光L4、及び液晶素子31を透過した透過光L5の3つが出力装置13に入射される。つまり、当該光L3~L5は、出力装置13から外部に出力される。
このように、光学装置12は、外部からの入射光L1から3つの出力光L3~L5を生成する。これによって、装置内での出力光L3~L5の生成における光の損失が少なく、かつ駆動応答性が高い。
具体的には、まず、光学素子20及び30は、遮光要素を用いることなく出力光の生成を行う。例えば、光学素子20は、出力光として反射光L2及び透過光L3を生成する際に、液晶層21Aの入射液晶面S1で全反射した光又は液晶層21Aを透過した光を用いる。この際、例えば偏光板などを用いることなく入射光L1のほぼ全てを用いるため、高効率で光取り出しを行うことができる。光学素子30においても同様であり、光学素子20及び30から取り出される出力光L3~L5は、入射光L1の大部分を用いた光である。
次に、駆動される要素は液晶層21A又は31Aのみであり、他の被駆動部材を用いない。従って、高い応答性を有するように液晶層21A及び31Aを構成することで、素子全体又は装置全体としての応答性が向上する。また、他の要素との間で応答遅延の調整などを行う必要が無い。
また、少ない構成要素で複数系統の光取り出しを実現することが可能であるため、装置全体がコンパクトなものとなる。また、振動や温度などの動作環境の影響に対する安定性が高い。
なお、光源システム10の用途は、例えば投光部材、すなわち灯具を構成することができる。例えば出力光に応じて異なる領域に光が投光されるように、また場合によってはその領域全体を照らすことができる。光源システム10は、コンパクト、高効率かつ高応答性な投光具となる。
なお、本実施例における光学素子20及び30の構成は一例に過ぎない。例えば、配向膜21B及び21Cのラビング構成、駆動電極21Dによる電圧印加方向の構成及び透光体22及び23の構成はこれに限定されない。また、取り出す出力光の系統数に応じて他の素子を追加することも可能である。以下に、本実施例の変形例として種々の他の構成例について説明する。
図10(a)及び(b)は、それぞれ実施例1の変形例1に係る光学装置12Aの模式的な上面図及び断面図である。光学装置12Aは、光学素子20Aの構成を除いては光学装置12と同様の構成を有する。本実施例においては、光学装置12Aは、光学素子20に代えて光学素子20Aを有する。
本変形例においては、光学素子20Aは、液晶素子25の構成を除いては、光学素子20と同様の構成を有する。液晶素子25は、液晶分子MCを有し、一方の主面S11を入射液晶面とし、これに対向する主面S12を出射液晶面とする液晶層25Aを有する。また、液晶素子25は、液晶層25Aの入射液晶面S11及び出射液晶面S12上にそれぞれ形成され、x軸方向に液晶分子MCを配向させる配向膜25B及び25Cを有する。
また、液晶素子25は、配向膜25B上に形成された駆動電極25Dを有する。駆動電極25Dは、配向膜25B上において、x軸方向、すなわち光源11からの入射光L1の入射方向に直交する方向に沿って延びるストライプ状の一対の電極(第1及び第2の電極)E11及びE21からなる。
光学素子20Aは、配向膜25Bによる液晶分子MCのラビング方向が、光学素子20の場合に対して直交する構成を有する。また、光学素子20Aは、電極E11及びE21によって生成される電界の方向が光学素子20の場合に対して直交する構成を有する。
図11(a)及び(b)は、それぞれ光学素子20Aにおける非駆動時及び駆動時における液晶分子MCの配向状態及び光学素子20A内の光の進路を模式的に示す図である。図11(a)に示すように、非駆動時においては入射液晶面S11の近傍の液晶分子MC11及び出射液晶面S21の近傍の液晶分子MC21の両方が、x軸方向、すなわち入射光L1の入射方向に直交する方向に沿って配向されてる。これは、光学素子20における駆動時(図5(a)など)と同様の状態である。
従って、光学素子20Aの非駆動時においては、透光体22の光入射面S11から入射した入射光L1の一部は入射液晶面S11において全反射を起こし、その他は液晶素子25を透過する。従って、全反射した光は反射光L2として透光体22の光出射面22Bから出射される(すなわち光学素子30に入射する)。また、液晶素子25を透過した光は透過光L3として透光体23の光出射面23Aから出射される(すなわち出力装置13によって出力される)。
一方、図11(b)に示すように、光学素子20Aの駆動時においては、電極E11及びE21によって入射液晶面S11の近傍にy軸方向の電界が生ずる。従って、入射液晶面S11の近傍における液晶分子MC11は、y軸方向に配向される。この状態は、光学素子20の非駆動時(図4(a)など)と同様の状態となる。従って、入射光L1の全てが入射液晶面S11で全反射を起こし、反射光L2として透光体22の光出射面22Bから出射される。
本変形例のように、入射光L1の入射方向に直交する方向に液晶分子MCをラビングする配向膜25Bを有し、当該ラビングされた液晶分子MCのうちの入射液晶面S11側の液晶分子MC11を当該ラビング方向に直交するように電界を印加する駆動電極25Dを有していてもよい。
図12は、実施例1の変形例2に係る光学装置12Bにおける光学素子20Bの模式的な断面図である。光学装置12Bは、光学装置12の光学素子20に代えて光学素子20Bを有する。光学素子20Bは、透光体27の構成を除いては、光学素子20と同様の構成を有する。
光学素子20Bは、出射液晶面S2側の配向膜21C上に形成された透光体27を有する。透光体27は、階段状に形成された複数の光出射面27Aを有する。出射面27Aの各々は、透光体22の光入射面22Aに対して平行に形成されている。また、透光体27は、光出射面27A間において光入射面22Aに垂直な垂直面27Bを有する。
本実施例においては、入射液晶面S2側の透光体27において、そのサイズをコンパクト化しつつ透過光L3の取り出し効率を向上させることができる。具体的には、まず、階段状に透光体27を形成することで、透光体27が小型化される。また、光出射面27Aは入射光L1が透過した光である透過光L3に垂直に配置されているため、その大部分が外部に取り出される。さらに、この光出射面27A間に設けられた垂直面27Bは透過光L3に平行に設けられているため、透過光L3の光取り出しを阻害しない。従って、コンパクト化及び高光取り出し効率化を図ることができる。
図13(a)は、実施例1の変形例3に係る光学装置12Cの模式的な斜視図である。光学装置12は、光学素子20Cの構成を除いては、光学装置12と同様の構成を有する。光学素子20Cは、透光体23の光出射面23A上に設けられた偏光ビームスプリッタ29を有する。
図13(b)は、光学装置12C内の光の進路を模式的に示す図である。本変形例においては、光学素子20及び30に偏光ビームスプリッタ29が追加された構成に相当する。これによって、光学装置12から出力される出力光の系統を1つ増加し、合計4系統の光出力を行うことができる。具体的には、偏光ビームスプリッタ29は、液晶素子21(液晶層21A)を透過した透過光L3を2つの出力光L31及びL32に分割する。従って、光学装置12Cからは、出力光L31及びL32、並びに出力光L4及び5の光を出力することができる。これによって、種々の出力先への光分岐に対応した自由度の高い光源システムを提供することができる。
なお、本変形例においては、光学装置12Cが偏光ビームスプリッタ29を有する場合について説明した。しかし、液晶素子21を透過した透過光L3を分割する部材は偏光ビームスプリッタ29に限定されない。例えば、光学装置12Cは、偏光ビームスプリッタ29に代えて、透過光L3の特定の偏光成分を反射させ、他の特定の偏光成分を透過させる偏光ミラーを有していてもよい。
このように、本実施例においては、光学装置12は、光学素子20及び30を有する。また、光学素子20は、液晶分子MCを含み、外部からの入射光L1が入射する入射液晶面S1及びこれに対向する出射液晶面S2を有する液晶層21Aを含む液晶素子21を有する。また、光学素子30は、液晶分子MCを含み、光学素子20からの入射光(反射光L2)が入射する入射液晶面S3及びこれに対向する出射液晶面S4を有する液晶層31Aを含む液晶素子31を有する。また、光学素子30の透光体32は光学素子20の光出射面22Bに接合されている。
また、光学素子20は、液晶層21Aの入射液晶面S1上に形成され、液晶分子MC1を入射液晶面S1の面内方向における第1の方向(例えばy軸方向)に配向させる配向膜21Bと、出射液晶面S2上に形成され、液晶分子MC2を出射液晶面S2の面内方向における第1の方向に直交する第2の方向(例えばx軸方向)に配向させる配向膜21Cとを有する。また、光学素子20は、配向膜21B上に形成され、電圧の印加によって、入射液晶面S1上において液晶分子MCを第1の方向に配向させる電界を生じさせる駆動電極21Dを有する。従って、高い駆動応答性を有し、高効率な光取り出しを行うことが可能な光学素子20及び光学装置12を提供することができる。
図14(a)は、実施例2に係る光源システム50のブロック図である。光源システム50は、光学装置51の構成を除いては、光源システム10と同様の構成を有する。光学装置51は、光源11からの入射光L1に対して光学処理を行う。図14(b)は、光学装置51の模式的な斜視図である。光学装置51は、光学素子20に代えて光学素子60を有する点を除いては、光学装置12と同様の構成を有する。光学素子60は、液晶素子61の構成を除いては、光学素子20と同様の構成を有する。
図15(a)は、液晶素子61の模式的な断面図である。液晶素子61は、液晶分子MC5を有し、入射液晶面S5及び出射液晶面S6を有する液晶層61Aと、入射液晶面S5及び出射液晶面S6上に形成された配向膜61B及び61Cと、配向膜61B及び61C上に形成された駆動電極61Dとを有する。
配向膜61B及び61Cは、液晶分子MC5を液晶層61C内において光源11からの光の入射方向に直交する方向にラビングするように構成されている。また、駆動電極61Dは、配向膜61B及び61C上にそれぞれ形成された電極E12及びE22からなる。電極E12及びE22は、光源11からの光に対して透光性を有する。例えばITO膜から構成されていてもよいし、金属メッシュから構成されていてもよい。
図15(b)は、光学素子60内の光の進路を模式的に示す図である。本実施例においては、駆動電極61Dが液晶層61Aを挟むように互いに対向して形成されている。従って、駆動時、すなわち駆動電極61D(電極E12及びE22間)に電圧を印加した場合、z軸方向、すなわち液晶層61Cの厚さ方向に電界が生ずる。
従って、液晶分子MC5はz軸方向に配向される。この場合、光源11からの入射光L1が入射されると、入射液晶面S5で全反射を起こす反射光L2と、液晶素子61を透過する透過光L3とが生成される。例えば、反射光L2は、入射光L1のうちのS偏光成分であり、透過光L3はP偏光成分である。なお、非駆動時においては、液晶分子MC5の配向状態は、光学素子20の駆動時と同様の状態となる。従って、例えばP偏光成分は反射光L2となり、S偏光成分は透過光L3となる。
換言すれば、光学素子60からは、駆動時及び非駆動時の両方において、透過及び反射の関係は変化するものの、反射光L2及び透過光L3の両方が取り出される。このように光学素子60が構成されていても、高い駆動応答性を有し、高効率な光取り出しを行うことが可能な光学素子60及び光学装置51を提供することができる。
図16(a)は、実施例3に係る光源システム70のブロック図である。光源システム70は、光学装置71の構成を除いては、光源システム10と同様の構成を有する。光学装置71は、光源11からの入射光L1に対して光学処理を行う。図16(b)は、光学装置71の模式的な斜視図である。光学装置71は、光学素子20に代えて光学素子80を有する点を除いては、光学装置12と同様の構成を有する。光学素子80は、液晶素子81を有する。
図17(a)は、光学素子80の模式的な斜視図である。図17(b)は、光学素子80の模式的な断面図である。光学素子80は、液晶素子81、透光体82及び83、並びに駆動電極84を有する。
本実施例においては、液晶素子81は、液晶分子MC6を有し、入射液晶面S7及び出射液晶面S8を有する液晶層81Aと、液晶層81Aを挟んで入射液晶面S7及び出射液晶面S8上に形成された配向膜81B及び81Cとを有する。また、光学素子80は、入射液晶面S7側の配向膜81B上に形成された透光体82と、出射液晶面S8側の配向膜81C上に形成された透光体83とを有する。
透光体82及び83は、それぞれ透光体22及び23と同様の構成を有する。透光体82は、光入射面82A及び光出射面82Bを有する。また透光体83は光出射面83Aを有する。本実施例においては、駆動電極84は、透光体82の光入射面82A上に形成された電極84Aと、透光体83の光出射面84Bとからなる。駆動回路40は、電極84A及び84B間に駆動電圧を印加する。電極84A及び84Bは、例えばITO膜又は金属メッシュなどの透光性電極からなる。
本実施例は、液晶素子81が電極を持たず、液晶素子81の外部に液晶素子81から離間した外部電極として駆動電極84が設けられた場合に相当する。なお、図17(b)に示すように、本実施例においては、配向膜81B及び81Cは、液晶層81A内の液晶分子MC6を、x軸方向、すなわち液晶層81Aの層内方向において透光体82の光入射面82Aに沿った方向にラビングするように構成されている。
図18(a)及び(b)は、それぞれ光学素子81における非駆動時及び駆動時における液晶分子MC6の配向状態及び光学素子80内の光の進路を模式的に示す図である。図18(a)に示すように、非駆動時においては、液晶分子MC6は、x軸方向、すなわち入射光L1の入射方向に直交する方向に沿って配向されてる。これは、光学素子20における駆動時(図5(a)など)と同様の状態である。
従って、光学素子80の非駆動時においては、透光体82の光入射面S7から入射した入射光L1の一部は入射液晶面S7において全反射を起こし、その他は液晶素子81を透過する。従って、全反射した光は反射光L2として透光体82の光出射面82Bから出射される(すなわち光学素子30に入射する)。また、液晶素子81を透過した光は透過光L3として透光体83の光出射面83Aから出射される(すなわち出力装置13によって出力される)。
一方、図18(b)に示すように、光学素子80の駆動時においては、電極84A及び84Bによって透光体82の光入射面82A及び透光体83の光出射面83Aの対向方向に沿った電界が生ずる。従って、液晶分子MC6は、y軸方向及びz軸方向の成分を有し、入射液晶面S7に対して傾斜した方向に配向される。この液晶分子MC6の配向方向は、例えば入射光L1の入射方向とほぼ同一の方向となる。この状態においては、入射光L1は偏光成分に関わらず全て入射液晶面S7において全反射を起こす。従って、入射光L1の全てが反射光L2として透光体82の光出射面82Bから出射される。
本実施例においては、駆動電極84を膜状の導電膜などによって形成することができる。従って、例えば実施例1に比べて駆動電極84の構成が単純化される。また、実施例1などに比べて液晶層81Aに印加される電界が安定する。
図19(a)は、実施例3の変形例に係る光学素子80Aの模式的な断面図である。光学素子80Aは、透光体85及び駆動電極86の構成を除いては、光学素子80と同様の構成を有する。光学素子80Aは、光学素子80の透光体83及び駆動電極84に代えて、それぞれ透光体85及び駆動電極86を有する。
透光体85は、液晶素子81の出射液晶面S8側の配向膜81C上に形成されている。また、透光体85は、透光体82の光出射面82Bに対向する対向面85Bを有する。具体的には、本実施例においては、透光体85は、透光体82と同一形状を有する。そして、透光体85は、対向面85Bとして、透光体82の光出射面82Bに平行な表面を有する。
また、駆動電極86は、透光体82の光出射面82B上に形成された電極86Aと、透光体85の対向面85B上に形成された電極86Bとからなる。駆動回路40は、電極86A及び86B間に駆動電圧を印加する。なお、非駆動時においては、液晶分子MC7は液晶分子MC6と同様の配向状態となっている。
図19(b)は、光学素子80Aの駆動時における液晶分子MC7の配向状態及び光学素子80A内の光の進路を模式的に示す図である。本変形例においては、駆動電極86に電圧を印加することで、入射光L1に対してほぼ垂直な方向に電界が生ずる。従って、液晶分子MC7は、入射光L1に直交する方向に配向される。この状態においては、入射光L1は反射光L2及び透過光L3に分離される。本変形例においては、光学素子80Aからは、例えば光学素子60と同様に、駆動時及び非駆動時の両方において反射光L2及び透過光L3の両方が取り出される。
このように、透光体82、83又は85上に駆動電極を形成して液晶分子の配向方向を調節した場合でも、高い駆動応答性を有し、高効率な光取り出しを行うことが可能な光学素子60及び光学装置51を提供することができる。
なお、上記した実施例は、互いに組み合わせることができる。例えば、光学素子30に代えて光学素子51を光学素子20に接合した光学装置を構成することができる。
上記した実施例においては、配向膜及び駆動電極による液晶分子MCの配向状態を調節することで、容易に入射光L1の分離を行い、高い光利用効率でかつ高い応答性で複数系統の出力光を得ることができる。

Claims (6)
- 第1及び第2の光学素子を有し、
前記第1の光学素子は、第1の液晶素子と、前記第1の液晶素子上に形成され、外部からの入射光が入射する光入射面及び前記第1の液晶素子によって反射された反射光が出射する第1の光出射面を有する第1の透光体と、前記第1の液晶素子を透過した透過光が出射する第2の光出射面を有する第2の透光体とを有し、
前記第2の光学素子は、第2の液晶素子と、前記第2の液晶素子上に形成され、かつ前記第1の光出射面に接合された第3の透光体とを有することを特徴とする光学装置。 - 前記第1の光学素子の前記第1の液晶素子は、
液晶分子を含み、互いに対向する第1及び第2の液晶面を有する第1の液晶層と、
前記第1の液晶面上に形成され、前記液晶分子を前記第1の液晶面内における第1の方向に配向させる第1の配向膜と、
前記第2の液晶面上に形成され、前記液晶分子を前記第2の液晶面内において前記第1の方向に直交する第2の方向に配向させる第2の配向膜と、
前記第1の配向膜上に形成され、電圧の印加によって前記液晶分子を前記第2の方向に配向させる電界を生成する第1の駆動電極と、を有し、
前記第1及び第2の透光体は、それぞれ前記第1及び第2の液晶面上に形成されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光学装置。 - 前記第2の光学素子の前記第2の液晶素子は、
液晶分子を含み、互いに対向する第3及び第4の液晶面を有する第2の液晶層と、
前記第3及び第4の液晶面上にそれぞれ形成された第3及び第4の配向膜と、
電圧の印加によって前記液晶分子を前記第3の液晶面の面内方向に配向させる電界を生成する第2の駆動電極と、を有することを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の光学装置。 - 前記第1の透光体は、前記入射光のうちの前記第1の方向に電界方向を有する第1の偏光成分に対しては前記液晶層よりも大きな屈折率を有し、前記第2の方向に電界方向を有する第2の偏光成分に対しては前記液晶層よりも小さな屈折率を有することを特徴とする請求項2又は3に記載の光学装置。
- 前記第1の透光体の前記光入射面は前記第1の液晶面に対して傾斜しており、
前記第1の透光体の前記光入射面と前記第2の透光体の前記第2の光出射面とは互いに平行に配置されていることを特徴とする請求項2乃至4のいずれか1つに記載の光学装置。 - 前記第2の透光体の前記第2の光出射面上に形成されたビームスプリッタを有することを特徴とする請求項1乃至5のいずれか1つに記載の光学装置。
