Definitions
- the present invention relates to a negative electrode active material, specifically, a negative electrode active material including a core-shell composite, a lithium secondary battery including the same, and a method of manufacturing the negative electrode active material.
- lithium secondary batteries developed in the early 1990s have a higher operating voltage and greater energy density than conventional batteries such as Ni-MH, Ni-Cd, and sulfuric acid-lead batteries that use an aqueous electrolyte solution. I am in the spotlight.
- lithium ion secondary batteries have safety problems such as ignition and explosion due to the use of organic electrolytes, and are difficult to manufacture.
- lithium polymer secondary batteries have been considered as one of the next generation batteries by improving the weaknesses of the lithium ion secondary batteries, but the capacity of the batteries is still relatively low compared to lithium ion secondary batteries, and the discharge capacity at low temperatures is insufficient. There is an urgent need for improvement.
- the alloy of the (semi) metal oxide and lithium is pre-alloyed to generate less irreversible phases such as lithium oxide and lithium metal oxide during initial charge and discharge of the battery. Since it is possible to increase the initial efficiency of the negative electrode active material.
- lithium by-products generated during the reaction of the (quasi) metal oxide and the lithium source may remain on the surface of the composite, which causes difficulty in mixing the slurry of the negative electrode active material due to high pH in the aqueous binder system including the same.
- the adhesive strength with the electrode is weakened by changing the binder physical properties in the slurry.
- the problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a negative active material and a method for producing the same, while suppressing the reactivity with by-products by the reaction between the lithium source and the (quasi) metal oxide, having excellent control of cycle characteristics and volume expansion.

- MO x -Li y alloyed with (semi) metal oxide When MO x -Li y alloyed with (semi) metal oxide is used by alloying lithium and (semi) metal oxide, it generates less irreversible phases such as lithium oxide and lithium metal oxide during initial charge and discharge of the battery.
- the initial efficiency of the negative electrode active material can be increased, lithium by-products generated during the synthesis of lithium and (qua) metal oxides remain on the surface of the negative electrode active material, which is used for mixing the negative electrode active material slurry including the binder when used in the aqueous binder system.
- the adhesive strength of the slurry is weakened by changing the physical properties of the binder in the slurry.
- the inventors of the present invention together with the carbon coating acting as a lithium-reaction barrier layer capable of suppressing the rapid reaction between lithium and (quasi) metal oxide before lithium alloying to (qua) metal oxide, A negative electrode active material which suppresses lithium byproducts contained in at least one of the surface and the inside of the shell portion after metal oxide and lithium alloying has been proposed.
- the negative active material may have a pH of 7 to 10. As lithium by-products are suppressed to have the above pH range, side reactions are suppressed to provide superior cycle characteristics and control of volume expansion.
- the shell portion may have a thickness of 20 to 60 nm.
- the core part according to the present invention comprises an oxide of a (qua) metal.
- the (semi) metal may be selected from the group consisting of Si, Sn, Al, Sb, Bi, As, Ge, Pb, Zn, Cd, In, Ti, Ga and alloys thereof, but is not limited thereto.
- the (quasi) metal (s) are present in the core portion in the form of oxides.
- the oxide of the (semi) metal can be used without being limited to one compound or a mixture of two kinds selected from the group consisting of SiO, SnO and SnO 2 .
- it may further comprise a (semi) metal, such as the (semi) metal described above.
- the reaction between the lithium metal powder, such as lithium in the lithium metal powder, and the (semi) metal oxide is not controlled, so that the metal crystal phase in the (semi) metal oxide grows rapidly.
- the reaction proceeds rapidly due to the large exothermic reaction during the reaction between Si and Li, which greatly increases the grain size of Si in SiO. In this case, the volume change of SiO increases, which may cause a problem of cracking during charging and discharging.
- the carbon material of the carbon coating crystalline carbon, amorphous carbon, or a mixture thereof may be used, and the carbon material of the shell portion may use about 0.05 to about 30 wt%, or about 1 to about 20 wt%, based on the weight of the negative electrode active material. Can be.
- a method of manufacturing a negative electrode active material includes (S1) coating a surface of a core part containing an oxide of a (semi) metal; (S2) alloying lithium with (semi) metal oxide by mixing lithium metal powder with the material obtained in the step (S1) and heat-treating it; And (S3) acid treating the material obtained in the step (S2).
- the inventors have found that after (alloy) metal oxides and lithium alloying, together with carbon coating acting as a lithium-reaction barrier layer that can inhibit the rapid reaction between lithium and (semi) metal oxides before lithium alloying to (semi) metal oxides. Since the by-products of Li remain on the surface of the active material, a method of removing Li by-products through acid treatment has been proposed.
- the present invention can reduce the pH of the aqueous binder system during the production of the negative electrode through this acid treatment, and as the surface of the negative electrode active material is improved than any other type of washing step, thereby changing the binder physical properties in the slurry
- the present invention has been completed due to the surprising finding that effects such as improvement of adhesion to the electrode can be expected by suppressing the effect.
- Carbon coating on the surface of the core part including the oxide of the (S1) (semi) metal is performed before alloying lithium and the (semi) metal oxide.
- the core portion may have a diameter of about 0.05 to about 30 ⁇ m, or about 0.5 to about 15 ⁇ m.
- the crystalline carbon in the case of crystalline carbon, may be coated on the core part by mixing the core part and the crystalline carbon in a solid or liquid state and then performing coating.
- coating may be mainly performed by a mechanical mixing method.
- the mechanical mixing method include a kneading method and a mixer so that shear stress may be applied during mixing.
- mixing in a liquid phase it may be carried out by mechanical mixing or spray drying, spray pyrolysis, or freeze drying, similarly to mixing in a solid phase.
- water, an organic solvent or a mixture thereof may be used as the solvent, and the organic solvent may be ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, toluene, benzene, hexane, tetrahydrofuran, or the like.
- a method of carbonizing the carbon precursor by coating with an amorphous carbon precursor and performing heat treatment may be used.
- the coating method may be used both dry and wet mixing.
- a deposition method such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using a gas containing carbon such as methane, ethane, propane, ethylene, acetylene, or the like may also be used.
- resins such as phenol resin, naphthalene resin, polyvinyl alcohol resin, urethane resin, polyimide resin, furan resin, cellulose resin, epoxy resin, polystyrene resin, coal pitch, petroleum pitch, tar (tar) ) Or low molecular weight heavy oil.
- step (S2) lithium is alloyed with (semi) metal oxide by mixing lithium metal powder with the material obtained in step (S1) and performing heat treatment.
- the composite formed in the step (S1) is mixed with the lithium metal powder by a dry mixing method or the like.
- the lithium metal powder and the complex can be easily mixed dry, in which case the mixing equipment can be used without limitation as long as it is commonly known in the art. For example, a shaker, a shaker, or the like can be used.
- the usual heat treatment step follows.
- the composite and the lithium metal powder formed in the step (S1) are mixed so that the weight ratio is about 70:30 to about 98: 2.
- This mixing ratio is a value set because lithium is a very light metal, and it is difficult to mix more than the weight ratio described above with respect to the composite.
- the weight ratio of the lithium metal powder is less than 2, the content of lithium in the final product is too small and the initial efficiency is not so high.
- the weight ratio of the lithium metal powder exceeds 30, there is a problem in that an excessive amount of lithium oxide or lithium silicate, which is inactive phases, is generated in the final product, thereby reducing the discharge capacity per unit weight.
- Metal parts can cause reactions to alloy with lithium.
- These lithium oxides or lithium silicates are relatively stable phases, but lithium- (semi) metal compounds, such as Li-Si compounds, become unstable when left outside. For example, when mixing about 10% by weight of the lithium metal powder in the composite, the initial efficiency may reach approximately 90%.
- the (quasi) metal oxide-Li alloying is achieved in the core by heat-treating the mixture thus formed.
- the carbon coating layer of the composite formed in the step (S1) must exist as a carbon material. The reason is as described above with respect to the negative electrode active material.
- the mixture of the composite and the lithium metal powder formed in the step (S1) requires heat treatment to form a (semi) metal oxide-Li alloy.
- the (qua) metal oxide and lithium react with each other to form new bonds, where lithium may be present in the form of lithium oxide or lithium- (qua) metal oxide.
- the heat treatment temperature range is not particularly limited as long as it is a temperature between the melting point of the lithium metal powder and the boiling point of the lithium metal powder. If the lithium metal powder is below the melting point, the reaction of the lithium metal powder and the (quasi) metal oxide may not occur. If the boiling point of the lithium metal powder exceeds the boiling point, the lithium reacts sufficiently with the (qua) metal oxide.
- the lithium metal powder can be evaporated in the form of a gas. Therefore, the heat treatment temperature range is preferably about 500 to about 2,000 °C, or about 700 to about 1,200 °C.
- the temperature of about 1,100 degrees C or less is preferable. This is because the SiO tends to grow separately from SiO 2 and SiO at a temperature of more than 1,100 ° C., thereby reducing the advantages of volume control of SiO. Therefore, the heat treatment is performed at a temperature between the melting point of the lithium metal powder and the boiling point of the lithium metal powder, wherein it is preferable to consider the type of (quasi) metal oxide.
- the heat treatment is preferably performed in an inert gas atmosphere in which nitrogen gas, argon gas, helium gas, krypton gas, or xenon gas is present to block contact with oxygen. If the mixture is in contact with oxygen during the heat treatment of the mixture, the lithium source and oxygen together with the metal oxide to form a lithium oxide or lithium metal oxide, the effect of increasing the initial efficiency of the battery can be reduced.
- the oxygen content of the (semi) metal oxide is MO x (0 ⁇ x ⁇ 1.5), where x is greater than 1.5, the (semi) metal (M), an electrochemical reaction site.
- MO x (0 ⁇ x ⁇ 1.5)
- M the (semi) metal (M)
- the relatively small amount of) can cause a reduction in the overall energy density and can also lead to problems of low initial efficiency.
- the surface of the (quasi) metal oxide core portion of the present invention includes a shell portion, which is a coating layer of carbon material, and the carbon layer shell portion of the carbon material allows lithium to pass but hinders the passage of oxygen so that oxygen passes through the core portion. Since the reaction with the metal oxide can be prevented, it is easy to control the oxygen content of the (quasi) metal oxide.
- (S3) step is an acid treatment step of the material obtained in the (S2) step.
- the viscosity of the slurry changes due to the change in physical properties of the binder, and there is a problem in that gas is generated in the slurry over time.
- the (S3) step is passed, the viscosity change of the slurry does not appear, and the present invention was confirmed by confirming that no gas is generated with time.
- the acid used in the acid treatment step may be at least one selected from the group consisting of hydrochloric acid (HCl), perchloric acid, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid, and most preferably may be hydrochloric acid, which removes only lithium byproducts on the surface of the active material from other acids and It is preferable at the point that application in the range which does not spoil another characteristic of is possible. When removing the lithium by-products may remove some or all of the lithium by-products of the carbon coating layer.
- HCl hydrochloric acid
- perchloric acid perchloric acid
- nitric acid nitric acid
- sulfuric acid sulfuric acid
- the concentration of the acid is preferably 0.5 to 3 M. If the acid concentration is lower than 0.5 M, the acid treatment effect may be insufficient due to the low concentration of the acid. If the acid concentration is higher than 3 M, other properties of the active material may be degraded due to the high concentration of the acid.
- the acid treatment step may be performed for 0.5 to 5 hours.
- the acid treatment method may be made in a batch form with agitation.
- the negative electrode active material according to the present invention may be prepared as a negative electrode according to a manufacturing method commonly used in the art, at this time, a binder and a solvent, a conductive material and a dispersant as needed to mix and stir to the negative electrode active material slurry After the preparation, it can be applied to the current collector and compressed to produce an electrode.
- the negative electrode active material according to the present invention has a pH of 7 to 10 when the aqueous solvent is used as a solvent in the preparation of the negative electrode, the pH in the aqueous system by the Li by-product active material produced while alloying with lithium and (quasi) metal oxide Improved the problem.
- the aqueous system means a system using water as a binder dispersion medium, and pH in the aqueous system is dispersed by distilled water 1g of active material 10g and 0.1M HCl in the filtered solution by titration to near pH 4 The measured result.
- the positive electrode according to the present invention may be manufactured by a conventional method in the art similar to the negative electrode.

Description

Si, Sn, Al, Sb, Bi, As, Ge, Pb, Zn, Cd, In, Ti, Ga
