Description

DEVICES AND METHODS FOR STYLING HAIR
BACKGROUND
Cross-Reference to Related Applications
[0001] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 62/148694, filed April 16, 2015 and U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 62/276695, filed January 8, 2016. All of the above referenced applications are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety herein.
Field of the Embodiments
[0002] These embodiments relate generally to devices and methods for styling hair.
Background
[0003] Various devices for styling hair have been known for many years. The use of styling devices for curling hair has been known for many years in the form of hair rollers. The curling hair rollers come in various shapes and sizes and are manufactured from a variety of materials, from porous spongy materials to rigid plastic or metal materials. The curling hair rollers can be secured using a variety of devices such as various clamps, mesh caps, and fabric encasings.
[0004] Many users wear curling hair rollers throughout the night in an effort to create longer lasting curls and to prevent having to restyle the hair the following morning. Traditional curling hair rollers are hard plastic and uncomfortable to sleep on. To address this problem, there has been several curling hair rollers created to allow the user to sleep on the roller. However, none of these devices address the problem of being able to straighten hair or dry hair while sleeping.
[0005] Many users want their hair to be straight and non-frizzy. Presently, devices for straightening hair or eliminating frizz use high heat or harsh chemicals to straighten the hair to the user's satisfaction. However, these devices are very damaging to the hair.
[0006] Presently there are no hair styling devices with the desirable characteristics of eliminating frizz from the hair, styling the hair as desired, drying the hair as desired, and the ability of the user to wear the hair styling devices for an extended period of time without discomfort including while sleeping. [0007] Accordingly, there is a need in this art for novel hair styling devices that can dry the user's hair while sleeping comfortably and style it without frizz, either imparting curls or straightening the hair. The instant embodiments address these needs and provide other advantages as well.
SUMMARY
[0008] It is therefore an object of the present embodiments to provide a device for drying and styling hair, either straight or curled, without creating frizz that is comfortable for the user to wear for long periods of time including at night and while sleeping. The various embodiments described herein advantageously fill the aforementioned deficiencies by providing a new hairstyling device that can straighten or curl hair, eliminate frizz, and is comfortable for the user to wear at night and while sleeping. The present embodiments provide other advantages as well.

[0080] Embodiments of the present disclosure will be described below in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. Those components that are the same or are in correspondence are rendered the same reference numeral regardless of the figure number, and redundant explanations are omitted.
[0081] It will be understood that although the terms "first", "second", etc. may be used herein to describe various components, these components should not be limited by these terms. These components are only used to distinguish one component from another.
[0082] The term "about" can refer to a variation of ± 5%, ± 10%, ± 20%, or ± 25% of the value specified. For example, "about 20" percent can in some embodiments carry a variation from 15 to 25 percent. For integer ranges, the term "about" can include one or two integers greater than and/or less than a recited integer at each end of the range. Unless indicated otherwise herein, the term "about" is intended to include values, e.g., weight percentages, proximate to the recited range that are equivalent in terms of the functionality of the individual ingredient, the composition, or the embodiment. The term about can also modify the end-points of a recited range as discuss above in this paragraph.
[0083] As will be understood by one skilled in the art, for any and all purposes, particularly in terms of providing a written description, all ranges recited herein also encompass any and all possible sub-ranges and combinations of sub-ranges thereof, as well as the individual values making up the range, particularly integer values. A recited range (e.g., weight percentages or lengths) includes each specific value, integer, decimal, or identity within the range. Any listed range can be easily recognized as sufficiently describing and enabling the same range being broken down into at least equal halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, or tenths. As a non-limiting example, each range discussed herein can be readily broken down into a lower third, middle third and upper third, etc. As will also be understood by one skilled in the art, all language such as "between", "up to", "at least", "greater than", "less than", "more than", "or more", and the like, include the number recited and such terms refer to ranges that can be subsequently broken down into sub-ranges as discussed above. Example 1— Hair Styling Device For Straightening
[0125] In this Example, a hair styling device comprising a cylindrical body comprising a semi-compressible core, a smooth layer surrounding the semi-compressible core, a proximal cylindrical top end, and a distal cylindrical bottom end, wherein the distal cylindrical bottom end is parallel to the proximal cylindrical top end configured on each end of the cylindrical body, and wherein the distal cylindrical bottom end comprises at least one attaching mechanism is used. The hair styling device also comprises a strap comprising a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the strap is fixedly attached to the cylindrical body adj acent to the proximal cylindrical top end. The hair styling device was placed near the roots of a user's hair after the user has showered and the hair was still wet or damp. The user's hair was laid flat against the hair styling device. The strap was helically wound around the cylindrical body and the hair and removably attached to the cylindrical body adjacent to the distal cylindrical bottom end. The user repeated this process until all of the user's hair was laid flat and wrapped with a hair styling device. The user then slept on the hair with all of the hair styling devices comfortably. When the user woke up and removed the hair styling devices, the hair was dry, straight, and free of frizz.
Example 2— Improved Straight Hair Styling with Hair Styling Device
[0126] The improvement in hair styling made by the approach described in Example 1 is compared to the hair styling of other devices. The other devices are applied to user's hair in separate trials. The application of the other devices is done in accordance with their relevant instructions and the amount of time sleeping is matched with the amount used in Example 1. It will be determined that the hair styling device made in accordance with Example 1 provides better hair styling in terms of dryness of hair, straightness of hair, and the least amount of frizz. It will also be determined that the hair styling device made in accordance with Example 1 provides more comfort for the user while sleeping.
Example 3— Hair Styling Device For Curling
[0127] In this Example, a hair styling device comprising a cylindrical body comprising a semi-compressible core, a smooth layer surrounding the semi-compressible core, a proximal cylindrical top end, and a distal cylindrical bottom end, wherein the distal cylindrical bottom end is parallel to the proximal cylindrical top end configured on each end of the cylindrical body, and wherein the distal cylindrical bottom end comprises at least one attaching mechanism is used. The hair styling device also comprises a strap comprising a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the strap is fixedly attached to the cylindrical body adjacent to the proximal cylindrical top end. The hair styling device is placed near the roots of a user's hair after the user has showered and the hair is still wet or damp. The user's hair is helically curled around the device without wrapping each strand of hair on top of itself allowing air circulation around the hair, which aids in drying the hair. The strap is helically wound around the cylindrical body and the hair and removably attached to the cylindrical body adjacent to the distal cylindrical bottom end. The user repeats this process until all of the user's hair is helically wound and wrapped with a hair styling device. The user then sleeps on the hair with all of the hair styling devices comfortably. When the user wakes up and removes the hair styling devices, the hair is dry, curled, and free of frizz.
Example 4— Improved Curled Hair Styling with Hair Styling Device
[0128] The improvement in hair styling made by the approach described in Example 3 is compared to the hair styling of other devices. The other devices are applied to user's hair in separate trials. The application of the other devices is done in accordance with their relevant instructions and the amount of time sleeping is matched with the amount used in Example 3. It will be determined that the hair styling device made in accordance with Example 3 provides better hair styling in terms of dryness of hair, curliness of hair, and the least amount of frizz. It will also be determined that the hair styling device made in accordance with Example 3 provides more comfort for the user while sleeping.
