Description
2203940 FBS/2530 METHOD ANDAPPARATUS FOR SHAPING LOCKS OF HAIR INTO SPIRAL
FORM The -invention is concerned with a method of shaping locks of hair into a spiral form and an apparatus for-carrying out this method.
Method,s and - device's f or the shaping of locks. -of hair into spiral form are already known but do not do justice to the demand made upon them. Thus, for example, locks were wound spirally on winders, but the result was that the shorter hair always present in locks of hair become only partially spirally wound and the ends of the-locks stood out and hence yielded--an unlovely result- Further, in the case of lock winders G.' that kind additional parts always have to be employed in order to fasten the tip. and the start of the lock of r h e. o c'k". w in d e r Mleans c;--:' f astening 2Lncl-.ude"A clips, needles and rubber rings. Further, in the case of lock winders of that kind it is necessary to provide different lengths and diameters of lock winder for every length of hair and for differe.rit kinds of lock, which - riaJe the application complicated and more.- costly.
Finally these lock winders were relatively heavy and therefore a nuisance to carry.
The problem dealt with by the present invention is to create- an improved simple and inexpensive method -:a--,id apparatus f or the pr-oducti-on of -spiral locks of hair.
According to the invention in one aspect, there is provided a method of shaping a lock of hair into a s piral form, wherein the lock of hair is wound spirally over a rod-shaped carrier, and the lock-of hair and the carrier are _surr.ounded by a, covering, whereaf ter the lock-of hair is-treated, e.g. by heat andlor.spraying and/or:coating, the.carrier and covering then being remov.ed from the. fixed lock of hair.
2 According to a preferred feature of the invention a band is employed as the covering, and is wrapped spirally over the carrier part and the lock of hair. The lock of hair and the band may be wrapped spirally in the same direction of rotation or alternatively.thereto in opposit.e directilon's of rotation to-one another round the carrier and the lock of hair wound thereon. The wrapping in the same or opposite directions may be performed in a close or a wide spiral.
The invention also provides apparatus for carrying out the method comprising a rod-shaped carrier to one end of which Is detachably connected a band capable of being wrapped spirally round the carrier.
The.band has a length which is greater than the lengt - h of the -rod, pref-erably-about twice the length.
The inventi --- will. now Ice 24e- cricelf -2 n m3re detail with reference by way of example to the accompanying diag.rammaLic drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows diagrammaticaly a partly- sectioned -el-evation---of an, app-arat-us acco-rding to the nventi-on, - Figu res 2 to 5 illustrate two alternative variants upon the method, the same apparatus being employed, and Figures 6 to 10 illustrate further variant embodi'me.-Tits,.
As may be seen from Figure 1, the apparatus comprises a carrier 2 in the form of a light hollow rod and a net 3 in the form of a band fastened to the end region of this rod.- The fastening is effected in a hole 4 in the rod in which the net is held by the knot 5. Both the carrier 2 and -the band 3 should be very light but must withstand the usual methods of treatment of hair such as permanent waving, water waving, hot-air blowing and treatment with fixing agents. The length of the band 3 in the case of the embodiment represented is-about twice the-length-of the carrier 2.
In the case of the variant upon the method in accordance with Figures 2 and 3 a lock 6 of hair which i-s joined_to-the scalp 7 is wrapped zpirally in one direction (arrow 8) round the carrier 2, and the band 3 is wrapped likewise spirally round the carrier 2 but in the opposite direction (a'rrow 9).
- In Figure 2 the carrier 2 is shown in two pieces, the arrangement at the s'tart of the winding of the lock of hair-and.the band being shown at the 1eft, whereas the righthand part of this Figure shows the end region of the carrier upon which both the lock of hair 1-5. and the band 3 are wound.

winding of the lock 6 of hair and the band 3 are shown.
The fastening of the start of the lock is effected - as may be seen in.the left-hand part of Figure 2 - by clamping it_between the carrier and-the Fi- 1 p T s-piral __Of tlie 'band. 3. The fa.st-ening r.st -,oo c _the of the-end region of the spiral lock and of the end of the band 3 is effected by pulling the end 16 of the band 3 once or in the form of a loop through the preceding loop of the spiral-of this---band as shown by the arrow Figures 4and,5 show another-variant upon the method, in which the same apparatus is used. As may be seen in the left-hand part of Figure 4, at the start the band 3 is laid round the lock 6 and the start of the lock is pressed against the carrier 2. The band 3 is led round under th.e.carrier part 2 and with - -rev-eiszil of the- dir-ection of rotation is -wrapped together with the-lock 6 in.the same direction of rotation round the carrier 2. In Figure 5 the same- 4 directions of rotation of the band 3 and of the lock 6 are shown diagrammatically. In the right-hand part of Figure -4 again the end region of the-apparatus is shown with the finish-wound lock and the band. The fastening of the end of the band 3 is effected in the same way as shown in Figure 2.
The method according to Figures 2 and 3 is preferably aplied when relatively wide spirals are to be generated. The method according to Figures 4 and 5 is preferred if a close spiral form of the lock of hair is to be achieved.
In. the. met-hod according to Figure 4 the initial fastening (left-hand part of the Figure) may be strengthened by the lock of hair being looped one complete turn round the left-hand end of the carrier 2 before the wrap-- Lth the ban- t n g, t o g h e r w is effected.
The carrier part 2 may alternatively be of solid form and the band 3 may consist of any material suitable for this- purpose. Plastics -netmaterial is preferred.
7he - lock-s -wound s.pirall-y -upon. the -apparatus._ -,ma:y be treated by any desired method such as permanent waving, water waving or spraying with fixing a gents.
After the formation of the locks the band 3 is unwound from the device and the carrier _2 is withdrawn from the lock- --T-he-locks so formed. nay -then. -if -desired be given still further treatment.
Before being wound up on the carrier, the hair is likewise preferably treated as usual, that is, washed and if necessary a treatment agent is applied.
Only by way of exapmple it may be mentioned that in the case of one embodiment of the apparatus in accordance with the invention the following dimensions have--proved advantageous: Length of the carrier part 2 about 25cm, diameter of the carrier about 8mm, length of the band 3 about 50cm, and width of the band 8cm.
Figur es 6 to 10 illustrate a further apparatus according to the invention and methods of using this apparatus.
The apparatus-comprises a carrier 12 in the, form of a rod. Whereas in Figures 1 to 5 a flexible band: is wound roun.d. _the carrier together with the hair, here----tbe band exists as an already spirally shaped band 13 which may be wound round the carrier part 12 and the lock 14 of hair arranged on it. The spirally shaped band 13 is thus laid in its preshaped form over the hair and the carrier part 12. -This form of execution has the a. dvantage that the c-o.vCring---ofthe wou-n-d lock -of hair -by the spiral band is facilitated.
The band 13 consists of a material which on the one hand has the -necessary- elastic stiff ness for preserving the spiral shape and which on the other hand is permeable to th-e-usual kinds of treatment such as rinsing with. water, soaking with solutions, etc.
Preferably the band- 13 consists of a plastics material in net or_grat.in.g form As may-'be-seen from Figures-6-and 7 the band-.13.
comprises'a spirally wound part with an annular head portion 18 at one end. The annular head portion is slit at 20 in the longitudinal direction. The slit 20 allows the band 13 to be slipped easily on to the r - -the -1 - ca -rier 12- F0,r --carrier ba3 a -notch---2 in which engages a protrusion 22 projecting inwards from the annular head portion 18 engages. The catch 19 formed by this ensures- the necessary hold of the annular head portion 18 on the carrier 12 but nevertheless allows the loosening of the band from the carrier.
f.i,gu.re -7 4hows the employment of the rod of Figure -4 in the production of a spirally wavy lock.
The lock 14 leading away from the scalp 23 is laid spirally round the holding part 12. This may be effected in either of the two possible directions of winding. In the starting position in accordance with Figure 7 the band 13 is resting against-the carrier 12 only by its annular head portion 18. After the winding on of the lock 14 of -hair -":simultaneously- with it, -- the spirally shaped band 13 is wound over the lock of hair round the carrier 12. Because of the resilience of the material of the spiral band the spirals are laid easily and simply round the lock of hair on the holding part and thus secure it in the desired way. The hair is fixed;fr-om--th.e f ir-st turn- and no zpecial holding dey-ices such as clasps or rubber rirgs-are necessary.--- The coverin-a of the wound lock of hair extends over the whole 1.ength and'in particular the shorter hairs and the tips of the lock c-' are secure-- sc that 1 L'X,..eW--se special holding devices have to be provided for them.
Figure 8 shows an alternative method of using the apparatus of Figure 4. in this method, the start 2.0 of the winding operation the-tips of the hair in the lock 14--of-hai-r-become clamped in the- fi.rst turn of the band 13. By turning the carrier the lock 14 of hair is wound spirally and then the spiral band 13 is laid over it.
The removal of the apparatus from the finished wavy-hair_may be.-e-ff-ected---im-;a number P.f--way..s.- -Thus the spirals may be easily unwound from the lock of hair and the holding part, after which the lock of hair may be disengaged from the last turn. In the preferred method the carrier 12 is withdrawn so that thus the spiral lock of hair is left lying within the spirally shaped -ban.,d, after which the ---spiral band is- pulled- off the 1 ock oT hair.
The spiral band 13 is preferably made from a --7 plastics foil having a net or grating structure in order to let through moisture, air, et -c.. The band may, for example, be formed by deformation of an originally plane foil which, by hardening it while in the spirally wound state, adopts this shape permanently. The spiral band may furt-her-be-forme-d-by a ' i;ropria,t,e,-.,d,utt.ing up of a preshaped tube of material having a net or grating-li-ke structure.
The spirals may have a constant or variable pitch over the length of th. e apparatus.
Referring to Figures 9 and 10, the preshaped band 13 may al-s.o be pr.oduc:ed by two spiral rods 16 -supported parallel to each other with a net or weave 15 extending betw een them. Transverse rods 17 may extend between rods 16 in o.rder to achieve the necessary s ti f f n-e ss
