Definitions
- This disclosure relates to paint application devices and methods of applying paint to surfaces.
- paint was being ground in steam-powered mills and an alternative to lead-based pigments was found in a white derivative of zinc oxide.
- Interior house painting increasingly became the norm as the 19th century progressed, both for decorative reasons and because the paint was effective in preventing the walls rotting from damp.
- Linseed oil was also increasingly used as an inexpensive binder.
- Paint is used for both aesthetic and practical purposes. Paint can be applied to items to prevent corrosion and damage caused by exposure to the elements. Paint can also be applied to surfaces to provide color and luster,
- Figure 1 shows one example of a paint application device of this disclosure.
- Figure 2 shows one example of a paint application device of this disclosure.
- paint tape a very thin layer of paint, which is dried and attached to a substrate, such as a plastic tape-like surface.
- a substrate such as a plastic tape-like surface.
- the painted substrate i.e., "paint tape”
- a spool which is housed in an applicator, such as a roller, gun, or pen.
- the paint tape can be roiled on to the wail surface by firmly pressing the applicator against the wail and rolling it over the surface in need of paint.
- the user of disclosed paint application technology heats the paint tape after application, which causes the paint to quickly soften and adhere to the wall in the same manner paint would dry.
- the devices and methods of this disclosure provide a simple and effective means for producing a clean, crisp line along a baseboard, wail or desired surface.
- the disclosed paint tape includes a pattern, stencil or cutout portion, where paint is not contained.
- patterned, stenciled, or cutout paint tape embodiments provide a convenient way to apply painted stenciled patterns or designs to a wali or other surface.
- stencilling refers to a process that produces an image or pattern by applying pigment to a surface over an intermediate object with designed gaps in if which create the pattern or image by only allowing the pigment to reach some parts of the surface.
- stencil may refer to either or both of the resulting image or pattern and the intermediate object; the context in which stencil is used makes clear which meaning is intended.
- This disclosure provides stencils made from planar flexible substrates having paint deposited on one side of the substrate and adhesive deposited on the opposing side of the substrate and also having a design cut through the entire tape or sheet. Such tapes or sheets may be used to produce the letters or designs by creating contrast between the underlying color and the color of the surface of the applied stencil.
- methods of applying stencil patterns to surfaces comprising: applying cured paint, deposited on a planar, flexible substrate to a painted surface, wherein the said applying comprises pressing an adhesive composition between the surface in need of treatment and the planar, flexible substrate; and wherein the said planar flexible substrate includes cutout portions within the plane of the planar flexible substrate.
- a planar flexible substrate having cut out patterns is pressed onto a painted wall surface.
- the planar flexible substrate having cut out patterns is pressed onto a painted wall surface and subsequently heated.
- a paint tape composition comprising: paint, deposited on a substrate, equipped with an adhesive.
- paint means a solid heterogeneous composition having a gloss, color, intensity, and sheen defined by the Fed Std 595 Paint Spec.
- the term "deposited” means affixed or attached
- the term “substrate” means a substance or layer that underlies something, or on which some material is deposited.
- adheresive means a substance used for sticking objects or materials together. Accordingly, a “substrate, equipped with an adhesive” means that the substrate is attached to an adhesive, which can then stick or adhere to another thing, substance, surface, or material, etc..
- the paint tape composition disclosed herein comprises a release coating, deposited on the paint, said release coating suitable for preventing the adhesive from sticking to the paint.
- release coating means a layer using for changing the adhesion properties of the underlying layer by lessening the stickiness.
- the paint tape composition disclosed herein comprises a primer layer, situated between the substrate and the adhesive.
- primer layer means a layer placed between the substrate and the adhesive to prevent diffusion between the backing and adhesive. In some cases, using a primer layer is important because the introduction of new materials into the adhesive can compromise the adhesive's performance.
- the layer is sandwiched in the middle of two layers. Such positioning may be accomplished by depositing a middle layer on top of a bottom layer, then depositing a top layer on top of the said middle layer. In this example, the middle layer would be “situated between” the top and bottom layers.
- the adhesive is chosen from acrylate polymer, rubber polymer, and silicone polymer.
- the substrate is chosen from paper, foil, fabric, and plastic film.
- foil means a thin sheet of metal.
- fabric means a natural or unnatural cloth or other material produced by weaving together cotton, nylon, wool, silk, or other threads.
- plastic film means a thin layer of plastic.
- a plastic film of this disclosure would include a thin continuous polymeric material.
- Plastic films are usually thermoplastics and are formed by melting for forming the film ; however, within the context of this disclosure, any suitable film forming means can be used to provide a plastic film.
- the paint comprises titanium dioxide.
- the paint comprises a coloring agent chosen from pigment and dye.
- pigment means a substance that gives something a particular color.
- liquid means a liquid that contains a coloring material and can be used to stain fabrics, skins, or other materials.
- the paint comprises color having a sheen, general color, and intensity chosen from the group defined by Fed Std 595 Paint Spec.
- the term "Fed Std 595 Paint Spec” refers to the set of ruies and standards for describing paint appearance.
- compositions and methods disclosed herein is matching the color of the paint to colors defined by Fed Std 595 Paint Spec. Such matching allows the person using the compositions and methods to apply a predictable, consistent color, sheen, and intensity.
- the color, sheen, and intensity are chosen to match the color, sheen, and intensity of a painted surface having an inconsistency
- the paint tape composition disclosed herein the paint comprises a polymer of synthetic or natural resins chosen from alkyds, acrylics, vinyl-acrylics, vinyl acetate/ethylene, poiyurethanes, polyesters, melamine resins, epoxy, and oils.
- the paint comprises a polymer of isoprene.
- a method of treating an inconsistency in a painted surface comprising: applying cured paint, deposited on a planar, flexible substrate to a painted surface in need of treatment, wherein the said applying comprises pressing an adhesive composition between the surface in need of treatment and the planar, flexible substrate,
- the term "inconsistency in a painted surface” means a blemish or interruption in the continuity of the painted surface. For example, a dent, chip, or scrape.
- cured paint means paint having a binder of film former that has substantially cross-linked.
- surface in need of ireatment means a painted surface having scrapes, dents, blemishes, or inconsistencies in the surface.
