Description

전극 조립체 및 이를 포함하는 이차 전지
본 출원은 2014년 10월 31일에 출원된 한국특허출원 제10-2014-0150318호에 기초한 우선권을 주장한다. 본 발명은 전극 조립체 및 이를 포함하는 이차 전지에 대한 것으로서, 보다 상세하게는 전해액에 의한 전지 소자의 부식을 방지하여 전지 성능 및 내구성을 향상시킬 수 있도록 구조가 개선된 전극 조립체 및 이를 포함하는 이차 전지에 관한 것이다.
통상적으로, 이차 전지(secondary battery)는 충전 및 방전이 가능한 전지를 말하는 것으로서, 휴대폰, 노트북 컴퓨터, 캠코더 등의 첨단 전자 기기 분야에서 널리 사용되고 있다. 특히, 리튬 이차 전지는 타 소재에 비해 단위 중량당 에너지밀도가 높아 다양한 방면에서 사용량이 증가되고 있다. 이러한 리튬 이차 전지는 일반적으로 제2극활물질로 리튬계 산화물, 제1극활물질로는 탄소재를 사용하고 있다. 또한 전해액의 종류에 따라 액체 전해질 전지와, 고분자 전해질 전지로 분류되며, 액체 전해질을 사용하는 전지를 리튬 이온 전지라하고, 고분자 전해질을 사용하는 전지를 리튬 폴리머 전지라고 한다. 또한, 리튬 이차 전지는 여러 가지 형상으로 제조되고 있는데, 대표적인 형상으로는 원통형과, 캔형과, 파우치형을 들 수 있다.

상기 전극조립체(20)는 제2극판(30)과 제1극판(40) 및 세퍼레이터(50)를 포 함한다. 상기 제2극판(30)과 제1극판(40)은 세퍼레이터(50)가 사이에 게재되어 적층된 후 젤리-롤(jelly-roll) 형태로 권취된다. 일반적으로 상기 제1극판(40)은 음극판으로 형성되며, 제2극판(30)은 양극판으로 형성되며, 제1극판과 제2극판이 반대로 형성될 수 있음은 물론이다.
상기 제2극판(30)은 박판의 알루미늄 호일로 된 제2극집전체(32)와 상기 제2 극집전체(32)의 양면에 코팅되는 리튬계 산화물을 주성분으로 하는 제2극활물질층(34)을 포함하고 있다. 제2극집전체(32)상에는 제2극활물질층(34)이 코팅되지 않은 영역인 제2극무지부(positive electrode uncoated area, 32a)가 제2극판(30)의 적어도 일단에 형성된다. 상기 제2극무지부(32a)에는 제2극탭(36)이 초음파 용접 또는 저항 용접되어 고정되며, 상기 제2극탭(36)의 단부는 상기 제2극집전체(32)의 상단부 위로 돌출되도록 고정된다. 제2극탭(36)은 통상 니켈 또는 니켈합금으로 형성되며 다른 금속소재도 사용될 수 있다.
상기 제1극판(36)은 박판의 구리 호일로 된 제1극집전체(42)와 상기 제1극집 전체(42)의 양면에 코팅된 탄소재를 주성분으로 하는 제1극 활물질층(44)을 포함하고 있다. 상기 제1극집전체(42)에도 제1극 활물질층(44)이 코팅되지 않은 영역인 제1극무지부(negative electrode uncoated area, 42a)가 제1극판의 양끝단에 소정영역으로 형성된다. 상기 제1극무지부(42a)에는 제1극탭(46)이 초음파 용접 또는 저항 용접되어 고정되며, 상기 제1극 탭(46)의 단부도 상기 제1극집전체(42)의 상단부 위로 돌출되도록 고정된다. 제1극탭(46)은 통상 니켈 또는 니켈합금으로 형성되며 다른 금속소재도 사용될 수 있다.
한편, 상기 세퍼레이터(50)는 각 전극판(30, 40) 간의 절연을 위하여 상기 제2극판(30)과 제1극판(40) 사이에 배치되어 있다. 상기 세퍼레이터(50)는 폴리에틸렌이나, 폴리프로필렌이나, 폴리에틸렌과 폴리프로필렌의 복합 필름으로 이루어져 있다. 상기 세퍼레이터(50)는 상기 제2극판(30)과 제1극판(40)보다 폭을 넓게 형성하여 전극판(30)(40)간의 단락을 방지하게 된다.
상기 전극 조립체를 전지 캔에 수용한 후 전해액을 주입하게 되는데 상기 전 해액에 의해 금속성분이 노출되어 있는 집전체 무지부가 부식될 수 있으며, 무지부부분에서 시작된 집전체의 부식면이 활물질로 피복된 부분으로 확산될 수 있으며, 이에 의해 전지 용량이 저하될 수 있다. 최근에는 리튬 이차전지의 고용량화가 진행됨에 따라 리튬 이차전지의 에너지 밀도가 증가되고 있는데 집전체 부식에 의한내부 저항 증가에 의해 고에너지 밀도 전지의 특성 발현이 어려운 문제점이 있다.
본 발명은 상기와 같은 문제점을 해소하기 위한 것으로서, 집전체의 무지부 표면에 부식 방지층이 형성된 전극 조립체 및 이를 포함하는 전지를 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 발명의 다른 목적 및 장점들은 하기 설명에 의해서 이해될 수 있을 것이다. 또한, 본 발명의 목적 및 장점들은 특허청구범위에서 기재되는 수단 또는 방법, 및 이의 조합에 의해 실현될 수 있음을 쉽게 알 수 있을 것이다.
본원 발명은 상기 과제를 해결하기 위해 부식 방지층이 형성된 전극 조립체 를 제공한다.
본 발명의 제1 측면에 따르면, 상기 전극 조립체는 제1극 집전체와 제1극 활물질층을 구비하며 제1극 무지부가 형성된 제1극판과, 제2극 집전체와 제2극 활물질층을 구비하며 제2극 무지부가 형성된 제2극판 및 제1극판과 제2극판을 절연시키는 세퍼레이터가 함께 권취되어 형성되며, 상기 제1극 무지부와 제2극무지부에 각각 제1극탭과 제2극탭이 고정되며, 상기 제1 무지부 및/또는 상기 제2 무지부 표면은 부식 방지층이 형성되어 있는 것이다.
본 발명의 제2 측면에 따르면, 상기 제1 측면에서 상기 부식 방지층은 전지의 작동 전압이 0V 내지 5V(vs. Li/Li+)에서 산화 및/또는 환원 반응이 일어나지 않는 것이다.
본 발명의 제3 측면에 따르면, 상기 제1 또는 제2 측면에서, 상기 부식 방지층은 SrTiO3, SnO2, CeO2, MgO, NiO, CaO, ZnO, ZrO2, Y2O3, Al2O3, SiC, TiO2, 하프니아(HfO2, BaTiO3로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 또는 2종 이상의 금속 산화물 및/또는 AlF3인 알칼리 금속 불화물을 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 제4 측면에 따르면, 상기 제1 내지 제3 측면 중 어느 하나에 있어서, 상기 부식 방지층은 고분자 수지를 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 제5 측면은, 상기 제4 측면에서 상기 고분자 수지는 폴리이미드, BCB, 파릴렌, 폴리아크릴레이트, 폴리비닐알콜 및 폴리비닐페놀, 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드 수지, 폴리비닐리덴-헥사플루오로프로필렌 공중합체로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 이상인 것이다.
본 발명의 제6 측면은 제1 내지 제5 측면 중 어느 하나에 있어서, 상기 제1극 및/또는 제2극 집전체가 알루미늄 박막을 포함하는 것이다.
또한, 본 발명은 상기 제1 내지 제6 측면 중 어느 하나에 따른 전극 조립체를 포함하는 이차 전지이다.
본 발명의 집전체는 부식 방지층으로 피복되어 있어 전해액에 의한 부식의 진행이 방지 및/또는 억제된다. 이에 따라 전지의 내부 저항 증가 및 전지의 용량저하가 방지되어 수명 특성이 향상되는 효과가 있다.
첨부된 도면은 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 예시하는 것이며, 상세한 설명과 함께 본 발명의 원리를 설명하는 것으로, 발명의 범위가 이에 국한되는 것은 아니다. 한편, 본 명세서에 수록된 도면에서의 요소의 형상, 크기, 축척 또는 비율 등은 보다 명확한 설명을 강조하기 위해서 과장될 수 있다.

이하 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본원 발명을 상세하게 설명한다. 본 명세서 및 특허청구범위에 사용된 용어 또는 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 발명을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다. 따라서, 본 명세서에 기재된 실시예와 도면에 도시된 구성은 본 발명의 가장 바람직한 일 실시예에 불과할 뿐이고 본 발명의 기술적 사상을 모두 대변하는 것은 아니므로, 본 출원시점에 있어서 이들을 대체할 수 있는 다양한 균등물과 변형예들이 있을 수 있음을 이해하여야 한다.
본원 발명은 제2극 집전체와 제2극 활물질층을 구비하며 제2극 무지부가 형성된 제2극판과, 제1극집전체와 제1극활물질층을 구비하며 제1극 무지부가 형성된 제1극판 및 제2극판과 제1극판을 절연시키는 세퍼레이터가 함께 권취되어 형성되며, 상기 제2극 무지부와 제1극 무지부에 각각 제2극 탭과 제1극 탭이 고정되는 전극조립체에 대한 것으로서, 상기 제1 무지부 및/또는 상기 제2 무지부 표면에 부식 방지층이 형성되어 있는 것을 특징으로 한다. 본원 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 있어서, 이때 상기 제1극판은 음극판으로, 제2극판은 양극판일 수 있으며, 상기 부식 방지층은 적어도 상기 양극판 표면에 형성될 수 있다.
일반적으로 이차 전지의 경우 양극 집전체는 알루미늄 박막이 사용되며 음극 집전체는 구리 박막이 사용되고 있는데, 이 중 특히 알루미늄 소재가 전해질에 의한 부식에 취약하다. 따라서, 양극 집전체, 특히 알루미늄 소재로 이루어진 양극 집전체의 표면에 부식 방지층이 형성되는 것이 바람직하다.
본원 발명에 있어서, 상기 부식 방지층은 전지의 작동 전압 범위에서 산화 및/또는 환원 반응이 일어나지 않는 것이 바람직하다. 또한, 상기 부식 방지층은 전해액의 산화 및/또는 환원 반응에 영향을 받지 않는 것이 바람직하다. 상기 전지의 작동 전압 범위는 특별히 한정되는 것은 아니지만 0V 내지 5V(vs. Li/Li+)인 것이다. 또한, 본원 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 따르면 상기 부식 방지층은 절연 특성을 가질 수 있다.
본원 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 따르면, 상기와 같은 특성을 달성하기 위해, 상기 부식 방지층은 Ba0 . 33Sr0 . 66TiO3(BST), Al2O3, Ta2O5, La2O5, Y2O3 및 TiO2 등과 같은 강유전성 절연체; PdZr0 . 33Ti0 . 66O3(PZT), Bi4Ti3O12, BaMgF4, SrBi2(TaNb)2O9, Ba(ZrTi)O3(BZT), BaTiO3, SrTiO3, Bi4Ti3O12, SiO2, SiNx, SiC 및 AlON 등과 같은 무기 절연체; 폴리이미드, BCB, 파릴렌, 폴리아크릴레이트, 폴리비닐알콜 및 폴리비닐페놀, 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드 수지, 폴리비닐리덴-헥사플루오로프로필렌 공중합체 등 비닐리덴 단량체를 포함하는 폴리비닐리덴계 공중합체 등과 같은 고분자 수지, 금속산화물, 금속 질화물 및 금속 불화물에서 선택된 1종 또는 2종 이상의 혼합물을 포함할 수 있다. 상기 금속 산화물은, 예를 들어, SnO2, CeO2, MgO, NiO, CaO, ZnO, ZrO2, Y2O3, Al2O3, TiO2 , 하프니아(HfO2), BaTiO3, TiO2, SiO2,, MnO2, MgO 일 수 있다. 또한, 상기 질화물은 Si3N4, BN 중 적어도 어느 하나를 포함하는 것이며, 상기 불화물은 예를 들어 AlF3을 포함할 수 있다. 바람직하게는 상기 부식 방지층은 폴리이미드, 폴리아크릴레이트, 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드계 공중합체 중 둘 이상을 포함하는 것이다. 그러나 이는 전술한 특성을 갖는 부식 방지층을 형성할 수 있는 재료를 예시한 것에 불과하며 특별히 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
이하 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 대하여 보다 상세하게 설명한다.
도 3은 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 따른 전극조립체의 권취 전 평면도를 나타낸다. 도 4는 도 3의 전극조립체의 전극판에 대한 정면도를 나타낸다.
도 3 내지 도 4를 참조하면, 상기 전극조립체(100)는, 제2극판(130)과 제1극판(140) 및 세퍼레이터(150)로 구성되며, 제2극판(130)과 제1극판(140) 사이에 세퍼레이터(150)가 게재되어 적층된 후 젤리-롤(jelly-roll) 형태로 권취된다. 본 실시예에서는 상기 제1극판(140)은 음극판으로 형성되며, 제2극판(130)은 양극판으로 형성된다. 본 발명의 다른 실시양태에 있어서 제1극판과 제2극판이 반대로 형성될 수 있다.
또한 전극조립체(100)의 내주부에는 제1극판(140)에 용접되며 상부로 돌출되는 제1극탭(146)이 형성되어 있으며, 외주부에는 상기 제2극판(130)에 용접되어 상부로 돌출되는 제2극탭(136)이 형성되어 있다. 여기서, 내주부는 상기 전극조립체(100)의 권취시 중심부를 의미하며, 전극조립체의 외부 쪽을 의미하며, 내주부와 대응되는 개념이다.
상기 제2극판(130)은 제2극집전체(132)와 제2극활물질층(134)과 제2극탭(136)을 포함하여 구성된다.
상기 제2극집전체(132)는 박판의 알루미늄 호일로 형성되며, 제2극집전체(132)의 양면에는 리튬계 산화물을 주성분으로 하는 제2극활물질층(134)이 도포된다. 또한 제2극집전체(132)의 양단에는 제2극활물질층(134)이 코팅되지 않은 영역인 제2극 무지부(133)가 소정 영역으로 형성된다. 상기 제2극탭(136)은 상기 제2극 무지부(133)의 양단 중에서 일단에 위치되는 제2극 무지부(133)에는 제2극탭(136)이 초음파 용접 또는 레이저 용접에 의하여 고정된다. 상기 제2극탭(136)은 니켈 금속으로 형성될 수 있으며 상단부가 제2극집전체(132)의 상단부 위로 돌출되도록 고정된다.
상기 제1극판(140)은 제1극집전체(142)와 제1극활물질층(144)과 제1극탭(146) 및 제1극단열판(148)을 포함하여 구성된다.
상기 제1극집전체(142)는 박판의 구리 호일로 형성되며, 제1극집전체(142)의 양면에는 제1극 활물질층(144)이 도포된다. 상기 제1극 활물질층은 탄소재이거나 탄소재를 포함할 수 있으나 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다. 또한 제1극 집전체(142)의 양단에는 제1극활물질층(144)이 코팅되지 않은 영역인 제1극 무지부(143)가 형성된다.
상기 제1극탭(146)은 니켈금속으로 형성될 수 있으며, 양단의 제1극 무지부(143)중 권취시 내주부에 위치되는 제1극무지부(143)에 제1극탭(146)이 초음파 용접되어 고정된다. 상기 제1극탭(146)은 그 상단부가 제1극집전체(140)의 상단부 위로 돌출되도록 고정된다.
본 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 따르면, 제1극 무지부 및/또는 제2 무지부의 표면에 부식 방지층이 형성된다. 상기 부식 방지층의 두께는 특별히 한정되는 것은 아니지만 1 ㎛ 내지 10㎛, 바람직하게는 1㎛ 내지 5㎛의 두께로 형성된다. 상기 부식 방지층은 전술한 재료를 적절한 용매에 투입하여 코팅액을 준비한 후 상기 코팅액을 이용하여 상기 무지부 표면을 코팅하는 방법으로 형성될 수 있다. 또한, 본원 발명의 구체적인 일 실시형태에 있어서 상기 부식 방지층 형성 방법은 CVD(Chemical vapor desposition), PVD(Physical vapor deposition), ALD(Atomic layer deposition), PEALD(Plasma enhanced ALD), PECVD(Plasma enhanced CVD) 또는 LPCVD(Low pressure CVD) 등과 같은 박막 증착 방법이 적용될 수 있다. 또는 상기 부식 방지층은 고분자 수지를 스핀 코팅하는 방법으로 형성될 수 있다. 이때 상기 고분자 수지는 적절한 용매와 혼합되어 스핀 코팅에 제공될 수 있다. 다만, 본 발명에 있어서 상기 부식 방지층 형성 방법은 전술된 두께로 부식 방지층을 형성할 수 있는 방법이면 상기 예시한 방법으로 특별히 한정되는 것은 아니다.
도 2를 살펴보면 상기 부식 방지층은 활물질이 도포되지 않는 무지부 부분 중 전극탭이 용접되는 부분을 제외한 나머지 부분에 형성되어 집전체가 전해액에 직접 노출되는 것을 방지하고 무지부 표면을 보호하는 역할을 한다.
도 4는 전극 조립체의 정면도인 것으로서, 전극탭이 용접되는 부분을 제외한 나머지 부분에 부식 방지층이 형성되어 있는 것을 개략적으로 도시한 것이다.
상기 부식 방지층의 형성은 전극 활물질층 형성 후에 전극 탭을 용접하기 전에 이루어질 수 있다. 통상적으로 탭의 용접은 초음파 용접 및/또는 레이져 용접에 의해 수행되는데, 상기 부식 방지층이 10㎛ 을 초과하여 두껍게 형성되는 경우에는 상기 용접에 의해 부식 방지층이 제거되지 못하여 용접이 불충분하게 형성되고 접속 불량이 발생할 수 있다. 이에 따라 전자 전도도가 저하되고 탭과 집전체 사이에 잔존하는 부식 방지층에 의해 저항이 증가하므로 바람직하지 않다.
한편, 상기 부식 방지층은 전극 탭 형성후 무지부 표면과 전극탭 표면을 모두 피복하는 방식으로 형성될 수 있다. 도 5 및 도 6은 전극탭 접속 후 부식 방지층을 형성한 전극 조립체를 개략적으로 도시한 사시도 및 정면도이다. 이 때에는 탭의 측면부분, 즉 무지부와 탭에 형성된 단차 부분도 부식 방지층으로 피복되는 것이 바람직하다. 도 5에 도시한 바와 같이 무지부와 탭 표면에 모두 부식 방지층이 형성되는 경우, 특히 탭의 단차 표면까지 부식 방지층이 형성되는 경우에는 무지부와 탭 사이의 간극을 통해 부식면이 확산되는 것이 방지되므로 전지의 내구성 측면에서 바람직하다.
또한, 본 발명은 상기 전극 조립체를 포함하는 리튬 이차전지를 제공한다. 상기 리튬 이차 전지는 캔(10)과, 캔(10)의 내부에 수용되는 전극조립체(100)와, 상기 캔(10)의 상단개구부를 밀봉하는 캡조립체(70)를 포함하여 형성된다. 종래의 리튬 이차전지와 동일한 부분은 도 1의 도면을 사용하여 설명한다.
상기 캔(10)은, 도 1을 참조하여 보면, 대략 직육면체의 형상을 가진 금속재로 형성될 수 있으며, 그 자체가 단자역할을 수행하는 것이 가능하다. 상기 캔(10)은 그 일면이 개구된 상단개구부(10a)를 포함하며, 상단개구부(10a)를 통해 전극조립체(100)가 수용된다. 상기 캡조립체(70)는 캡플레이트(71)와 절연플레이트(72)와 터미널플레이트(23) 및 전극단자(74)를 포함하여 구성된다.
캡조립체(70)는 별도의 절연케이스(79)와 결합되어 캔(10)의 상단개구부(10a)에 결합되어 캔(10)을 밀봉하게 된다. 상기 전극단자(74)는 상기 제1극탭과 연결되며, 이차전지의 구조에 따라서는 제2극탭에 연결될 수 있다.
또한 본 명세서에서는 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예로서 본 발명의 전극조립체를 젤리 롤 형상으로 형성한 후 일정하게 압착한 캔형 리튬 이차전지에 대해 설명하였으나, 이것은 단지 각형 리튬 이차전지에 국한될 것이 아니며, 본 실시예와 같은 전극 젤리롤이 사용될 수 있는 전지는 어떠한 형태의 것도 적용 가능하다 할 것이다. 따라서, 본 발명은 각형 리튬 이차전지뿐 아니라, 원통형 리튬 이차전지와 단추형 리튬 이차전지 및 일차전지 등 다양하게 적용될 수 있다.
이상 설명한 바와 같이, 본 발명은 상술한 특정의 바람직한 실시예에 한정되지 아니하며, 특허청구범위에서 청구하는 본발명의 요지를 벗어남이 없이 당해 발명이 속하는 기술분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자라면 누구든지 다양한 변형의 실시가 가능한 것은 물론이고, 그와 같은 변경은 특허청구범위 기재의 범위 내에 있게 된다.

Claims (7)

  1. 제1극 집전체와 제1극 활물질층을 구비하며 제1극 무지부가 형성된 제1극판과, 제2극 집전체와 제2극 활물질층을 구비하며 제2극 무지부가 형성된 제2극판 및 제1극판과 제2극판을 절연시키는 세퍼레이터가 함께 권취되어 형성되며, 상기 제1극 무지부와 제2극 무지부에 각각 제1극탭과 제2극탭이 고정되며,
    상기 제1극 무지부 및/또는 상기 제2극 무지부 표면은 부식 방지층이 형성되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 것인, 전극 조립체.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 부식 방지층은 전지의 작동 전압이 0V 내지 5V(vs. Li/Li+)에서 산화 및/또는 환원 반응이 일어나지 않는 것인, 전극 조립체.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 부식 방지층은 SrTiO3, SnO2, CeO2, MgO, NiO, CaO, ZnO, ZrO2, Y2O3, Al2O3, SiC, TiO2 , 하프니아(HfO2), BaTiO3로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 또는 2종 이상의 금속 산화물 및/또는 AlF3인 알칼리 금속 불화물을 포함하는 것인, 전극 조립체.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 부식 방지층은 고분자 수지를 포함하는 것인, 전극 조립체.
  5. 제4항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 수지는 폴리이미드, BCB, 파릴렌, 폴리아크릴레이트, 폴리비닐알콜 및 폴리비닐페놀, 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드 수지, 폴리비닐리덴-헥사플루오로프로필렌 공중합체로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 이상인 것인, 전극 조립체.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 제1극 및/또는 제2극 집전체는 알루미늄 박막을 포함하는 것인, 전극 조립체.
  7. 제1항 내지 제6항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 전극 조립체를 포함하는 이차 전지.
