Description
本発明は、固体レーザ装置に関し、特に安定したレーザ発振を得ることができる固体レーザ装置に関する。
固体レーザ装置としては、特許文献1に記載されたレーザ加工装置が知られている。このレーザ加工装置は、励起光源、固体レーザ結晶、ビームスプリッタを備える。固体レーザ結晶は、励起光源からの励起光の入射面を構成する第1端面と、励起光の入射面及び励起光の取り出し面を構成する第2端面を備える。
ビームスプリッタは、励起光源からの励起光を、第1分岐経路及び第2分岐経路に分岐し、分岐された2つの励起光のうち、一方の励起光を固体レーザ結晶の第1端面に入射し、他方の励起光を第2端面に入射する。これにより、レーザ装置の高出力化に伴う励起光の高出力化により生ずる熱レンズの発生を抑制することができる。
しかし、固体レーザ装置の高出力化に伴って、半導体レーザも高出力となり、半導体レーザの発熱を処理するための冷却機構が必要となる。このため、固体レーザ装置が大型化する。
特許文献2のレーザ装置は、半導体レーザを含む励起光源と、固体レーザ光を発生させるレーザ出力部とを分離し、励起光源からの励起光を光ファイバによりレーザ出力部に伝送する。これにより、レーザ出力部を小型化することができる。
光ファイバを通すことにより、励起光は、無偏光化されるが、光ファイバの物理的条件、例えば固定状態などの条件次第では、半導体レーザの直線偏光成分が完全に消えないことがある。また、光ファイバの物理的条件により偏光特性が変動してしまうことがある。このような状態では、固体レーザ結晶を励起しても、安定した固体レーザ発振を得ることができなかった。
この課題に対し、特許文献2のレーザ装置は、偏光解消素子(Depolarization device)を用いて励起光が固体レーザ結晶へ入射される前に励起光を確実に無偏光化している。
固体レーザ結晶として使用されるNd:YVO4やNd:YLFなどの結晶は異方性結晶であり、結晶のc軸に平行な方向とc軸に垂直な方向とで異なる吸収係数を有している。特許文献3には、励起光の偏光方向を吸収係数の大きい方向と一致させる方が励起効率が高くなることが記載されている。
特許文献1のレーザ装置においては、励起光の偏光特性を制御していないため、励起光源とレーザ出力部を分離して励起光を光ファイバを用いて伝送する構成では、偏光特性の変動により安定したレーザ発振を得ることができなかった。
特許文献2のレーザ装置においては、無偏光の励起光による励起は、高出力化において、励起効率が悪くなっていた。
本発明は、安定したレーザ発振を得ることができ、励起効率を良くすることができる固体レーザ装置を提供することを目的とする。
上記の課題を解決するために、本発明に係る固体レーザ装置は、励起光を出射する半導体レーザを含む励起光源部と、固体レーザ出力部と、前記励起光源部と前記固体レーザ出力部とを接続する光ファイバとを備える。前記固体レーザ出力部は、前記励起光により励起され固体レーザ発振光を生成する固体レーザ結晶と、前記半導体レーザからの励起光を直交する2つの直線偏光成分に分離する偏光分離素子と、前記偏光分離素子で分離された2つの励起光の内の第1励起成分を前記固体レーザ結晶の第1端面に入射させる第1伝送経路部と、前記2つの励起光の内の第2励起成分を前記固体レーザ結晶の第1端面と対向する第2端面に入射させる第2伝送経路部と、前記第1伝送経路部及び第2伝送経路部の一方の光軸上に配置され、励起成分の偏光方向を90°回転させるλ/2波長板(λは波長)と、前記固体レーザ結晶を含み、前記固体レーザ結晶の第1端面に入射された第1励起成分と前記固体レーザ結晶の第2端面に入射された第2励起成分とにより前記固体レーザ結晶を励起して固体レーザ発振光を生成させるレーザ共振器とを備える。
本発明によれば、光ファイバから出射された励起光は、偏光分離素子により直交する2つの直線偏光成分に分離される。その後、分離された一方の励起光の偏光方向は、λ/2波長板を通して90°回転される。このため、分離された一方の励起光の偏光方向は、分離された他方の励起光の偏光方向と一致された後、固体レーザ結晶の両端面にそれぞれの励起光が入射され、固体レーザ発振が得られる。
従って、光ファイバの物理的条件が変化し、光ファイバから出射した後の励起光の偏光特性が変動しても、固体レーザ結晶へ入射する際の励起光の偏光特性は、一定に保持される。このため、安定した固体レーザ発振を得ることができる。また、固体レーザ結晶の両端面にそれぞれの励起光が入射されて、固体レーザ発振を得ることで、片側端面から励起する構成と比較して熱レンズの影響も低減することができる。
以下、本発明の実施形態に係る固体レーザ装置が、図面を参照しながら詳細に説明される。
(第1の実施形態)
本発明の実施形態に係る固体レーザ装置は、図1に示すように、励起光を出射するレーザダイオードからなる半導体レーザ2を含む励起光源1(励起光源部)、固体レーザ出力部5と、励起光源1と固体レーザ出力部5とを接続する光ファイバ4とを備えている。励起光源1は、さらに、半導体レーザ2からの励起光を光ファイバ4の光入力部4aに導くレンズ3を有する。
本発明の実施形態に係る固体レーザ装置は、図1に示すように、励起光を出射するレーザダイオードからなる半導体レーザ2を含む励起光源1(励起光源部)、固体レーザ出力部5と、励起光源1と固体レーザ出力部5とを接続する光ファイバ4とを備えている。励起光源1は、さらに、半導体レーザ2からの励起光を光ファイバ4の光入力部4aに導くレンズ3を有する。
光ファイバ4は、光入力部4a、光出力部4bを有し、光入力部4aから入射された半導体レーザ2からの励起光を伝送して光出力部4bから固体レーザ出力部5に出射する。
固体レーザ出力部5は、レンズ6、偏光分離素子7、λ/2波長板(λは波長)8と、レンズ9a,9b、ミラー10,11a,11b、ダイクロイックミラー12a,12b,16、固体レーザ結晶13、音響光学素子14、共振器ミラー15a,15b、波長変換素子17、ミラー19、レンズ20を備える。
固体レーザ結晶13は、半導体レーザ2からの励起光により励起され固体レーザ発振光を生成する。偏光分離素子7は、レンズ6を介する光ファイバ4からの励起光を直交する2つの直線偏光成分に分離する。
レンズ9a、ミラー11a、及びダイクロイックミラー12aから構成される第1伝送経路部は、偏光分離素子7で分離された2つの励起光の内の第1励起成分を固体レーザ結晶13の第1端面に入射させる。
ミラー10、レンズ9b、ミラー11b、及びダイクロイックミラー12bから構成される第2伝送経路部は、2つの励起光の内の第2励起成分を固体レーザ結晶13の第1端面と対向する第2端面に入射させる。
λ/2波長板(λは波長)8は、第1伝送経路部の光軸上で且つ偏光分離素子7とレンズ9aとの間に配置され、偏光分離素子7からの励起成分の偏光方向を90°回転させる。
レーザ共振器18は、固体レーザ結晶13を含み、固体レーザ結晶13の第1端面に端面に入射された第1の励起成分と固体レーザ結晶13の第2端面に端面に入射された第2の励起成分とにより固体レーザ結晶13を励起して固体レーザ発振光を生成させる。
レーザ共振器18は、ダイクロイックミラー12a(第1ダイクロイックミラー)、ダイクロイックミラー12b(第2ダイクロイックミラー)、共振器ミラー15a(第1共振器ミラー)、共振器ミラー15b(第2共振器ミラー)、音響光学素子14、波長変換素子16を備えている。
ダイクロイックミラー12aは、第1伝送経路部上で且つミラー11aと固体レーザ結晶13との間に固体レーザ結晶13の第1端面に対して45°の角度で配置され、励起光を透過し固体レーザ発振光を共振器ミラー15aの方向に反射する。
ダイクロイックミラー12bは、第2伝送経路部上で且つミラー11bと固体レーザ結晶13との間に固体レーザ結晶13の第2端面に対して45°の角度で配置され、励起光を透過し固体レーザ発振光を共振器ミラー15bの方向に反射する。
共振器ミラー15aは、ダイクロイックミラー12aで反射された固体レーザ発振光と直交して配置され、ダイクロイックミラー12aで反射された固体レーザ発振光を反射する。
共振器ミラー15bは、ダイクロイックミラー12bで反射された固体レーザ発振光と直交して配置され、ダイクロイックミラー12bで反射された固体レーザ発振光を反射する。
固体レーザ結晶13は、異方性結晶からなり、異方性結晶の吸収係数が大きい軸方向と励起光の偏光方向とが一致するように配置されている。
また、ダイクロイックミラー12bと共振器ミラー15bとの間には、固体レーザ発振光をジャイアントパルス化するための音響光学素子14が配置されている。ダイクロイックミラー16と共振器ミラー15aとの間には、固体レーザ発振光を波長変換するための波長変換素子17が配置されている。
ダイクロイックミラー16は、ダイクロイックミラー12aと波長変換素子17との間に配置され、波長変換素子17で変換された高調波をレーザ共振器18の外に取り出す。
ダイクロイックミラー19、レンズ20は、出射器21を構成する。ダイクロイックミラー19は、ダイクロイックミラー16からの波長変換素子17で変換された高調波をレンズ20を介して出射方向やビーム径を調整して、固体レーザ装置の外部に出射する。
このように実施形態に係る固体レーザ装置によれば、半導体レーザ2から励起光がレンズ3を介して光ファイバ4に入射される。そして、光ファイバ4から出射された励起光は、レンズ6を介して偏光分離素子7により直交する2つの直線偏光成分に分離される。
その後、分離された一方の励起光の偏光方向は、λ/2波長板8を通して90°回転され、レンズ9a、ミラー11a、ダイクロイックミラー12aを介して固体レーザ結晶13の第1端面に入射される。
一方、偏光分離素子7により分離された他方の励起光は、ミラー10、レンズ9b、ミラー11b、ダイクロイックミラー12bを介して固体レーザ結晶13の第1端面と対向する第2端面に入射される。
即ち、分離された一方の励起光の偏光方向は、分離された他方の励起光の偏光方向と一致された後、固体レーザ結晶13の両端面にそれぞれの励起光が入射される。そして、固体レーザ結晶13に入射された励起光がレーザ共振器18により増幅されて、固体レーザ発振が得られる。
ここで、光ファイバ4の物理的条件が変化し、光ファイバ4から出射した後の励起光の偏光特性が変動した場合に、偏光分離素子7により直交する2つの直線偏光成分に分離される割合が変動する。
例えば、偏光分離素子7が直交する2つの直線偏光成分を50%と50%との割合で分離していても、励起光の偏光特性が変動した場合には、偏光分離素子7が直交する2つの直線偏光成分を55%と45%との割合で分離するように変動してしまう。
しかし、実施形態に係る固体レーザ装置では、直交する2つの直線偏光成分の割合が変動しても、一方の励起光と他方の励起光は、同一方向の直線偏光の光として固体レーザ結晶13の両端面に入射されるので、固体レーザ結晶13に入射される励起光の吸収量は一定に保持される。このため、安定した固体レーザ発振を得ることができる。
また、固体レーザ結晶13の両端面にそれぞれの励起光が入射されて、固体レーザ発振を得ることで、片側端面から励起する構成と比較して熱レンズの影響も低減することができる。
図2は本発明の実施形態に係る固体レーザ装置における励起光波長に対するNd:YVO4の吸収係数を示す図である。図2において、c軸に平行な方向の吸収係数は、実線で示し、c軸に垂直な方向の吸収係数は、点線で示した。
GaAs系半導体レーザの発振波長に相当する809nm付近の波長において、c軸に平行な方向の吸収係数は、c軸に垂直な方向の吸収係数に比較して2倍以上大きい。このため、光ファイバ4内で無偏光化された励起光を再度、偏光分離素子7により直線偏光に変換し、励起光の偏光方向(図1の矢印↑で示す縦方向)をNd:YVO4のc軸(縦方向)と平行な方向と一致させる。
これにより、より高効率な固体レーザ発振が得られる。このため、励起光源1の低出力化や発熱量減少による冷却機構の簡略化を実現できる。また、固体レーザ装置を小型化できる。
なお、本発明は上述した実施形態に係る固体レーザ装置に限定されるものではない。実施形態に係る固体レーザ装置では、偏光分離素子7とレンズ9aとの間にλ/2波長板8を設けた。例えば、偏光分離素子7とレンズ9aとの間にλ/2波長板8を設ける代わりに、偏光分離素子7とミラー10との間にλ/2波長板8を設けるようにしても良い。
この場合には、偏光分離素子7により直線偏光に変換し、励起光の偏光方向(矢印→で示す横方向)をNd:YVO4のc軸(横方向)と平行な方向と一致させることで、より高効率な固体レーザ発振が得られる。
安定したレーザ発振を得ることができ、励起効率を良くすることができる固体レーザ装置を提供できる。
Claims (3)
- 励起光を出射する半導体レーザを含む励起光源部と、固体レーザ出力部と、
前記励起光源部と前記固体レーザ出力部とを接続する光ファイバとを備え、
前記固体レーザ出力部は、
前記励起光により励起され固体レーザ発振光を生成する固体レーザ結晶と、
前記半導体レーザからの励起光を直交する2つの直線偏光成分に分離する偏光分離素子と、
前記偏光分離素子で分離された2つの励起光の内の第1励起成分を前記固体レーザ結晶の第1端面に入射させる第1伝送経路部と、
前記2つの励起光の内の第2励起成分を前記固体レーザ結晶の第1端面と対向する第2端面に入射させる第2伝送経路部と、
前記第1伝送経路部及び第2伝送経路部の一方の光軸上に配置され、励起成分の偏光方向を90°回転させるλ/2波長板(λは波長)と、
前記固体レーザ結晶を含み、前記固体レーザ結晶の第1端面に入射された第1励起成分と前記固体レーザ結晶の第2端面に入射された第2励起成分とにより前記固体レーザ結晶を励起し前記固体レーザ発振光を生成させるレーザ共振器と、
を備える固体レーザ装置。 - 前記固体レーザ結晶は、異方性結晶からなり、前記異方性結晶の吸収係数が大きい軸方向と前記励起光の偏光方向とが一致するように配置されている請求項1記載の固体レーザ装置。
- 前記レーザ共振器は、
前記第1伝送経路部上に配置され、励起光を透過し前記固体レーザ発振光を反射する第1ダイクロイックミラーと、
前記第2伝送経路部上に配置され、励起光を透過し前記固体レーザ発振光を反射する第2ダイクロイックミラーと、
前記第1ダイクロイックミラーで反射された前記固体レーザ発振光を反射する第1共振器ミラーと、
前記第2ダイクロイックミラーで反射された前記固体レーザ発振光を反射する第2共振器ミラーと、
を備える請求項1又は請求項2記載の固体レーザ装置。
