Definitions
- the present invention relates to an optical fiber preform and an optical fiber preform manufacturing method.
- JP2005-37210A (patent document 1), US2006 / 0130530A (patent document 2), JP2007-504080A, JP2008-536190A, JP2010-501894A, JP2009-541796A, JP2010-526749A, WO98 / 002389, US5146534B are alkali metal elements
- a silica-based optical fiber in which is added to the core is described.
- the viscosity of the core portion can be lowered when the optical fiber preform is drawn, and the relaxation of the silica glass network structure proceeds. It is said that transmission loss of optical fibers can be reduced.
- Patent Documents 1 and 2 describe a diffusion method as a method of adding an alkali metal element to silica glass.
- the diffusion method heats the pipe with an external heat source or generates plasma in the pipe while introducing the raw material vapor obtained by heating the alkali metal or alkali metal salt as the raw material into the silica glass pipe.
- the alkali metal element is diffused and added to the inner surface of the silica glass pipe.
- the silica glass pipe is heated to reduce the diameter. After the diameter reduction, a certain thickness of the inner surface of the silica glass pipe is etched for the purpose of removing transition metal elements such as Ni and Fe which are added simultaneously with the addition of the alkali metal element. Since the alkali metal element diffuses faster than the transition metal element, the alkali metal element can remain even if the transition metal element is removed by etching the glass surface with a certain thickness.
- the glass pipe After etching, the glass pipe is heated and solidified to produce a rod added with an alkali metal element (core portion of the optical fiber preform).

It is preferable that it is ppb or more and 200 mol ⁇ ppb or less.
- the core portion is preferably made of glass containing no Ge, and the relative refractive index difference based on pure silica glass is preferably in the range of ⁇ 0.1% to + 1.0%.
- the alkali metal atom concentration is preferably 4,000 atomic ppm or less.

Further, the average potassium (K) concentration of the entire core portion is preferably 5 to 100 atomic ppm, and most preferably 10 to 30 atomic ppm.
- a method for producing an optical fiber preform of the present invention wherein the partial pressure of oxygen in a silica glass pipe containing alkali metal atoms having an average concentration of 5 atomic ppm or more is 1 kPa or more and 80 kPa or less.
- the silica glass pipe is heated to an external heat source to a temperature of 1,600 ° C or higher and crushed to create a core part, and the cladding part has a smaller refractive index around the core part than the core part.
- the solidification it is preferable to carry out the solidification in a state where the internal pressure of the silica glass pipe is kept at 10 kPa or more and 80 kPa or less. Further, it is preferable to carry out the solidification in a state where a gas obtained by mixing an inert gas having a flow rate of 0.25 times to 100 times the oxygen flow rate with oxygen is supplied into the silica glass pipe.

- the diameter of the region where potassium is added to 50 atomic ppm or more is 8 mm.
- the dissolved oxygen molecule concentration in the first rod can be measured by the intensity of fluorescence at a wavelength of 1272 nm when irradiated with light of a wavelength of 765 nm (for example, K. Kajihara, et al., J. Ceramic Soc. Japan, 112 [10], pp. 559-562 (2004)).

- optical fiber preform 1 When the optical fiber preform 1 was manufactured under the various conditions described above and an optical fiber was further manufactured, various characteristics of the obtained optical fiber were obtained as shown in Table 1 below. .
- the addition step (step S2) was performed at a KBr temperature of 800 ° C. with a reduced concentration of KBr vapor, and the core portion containing an alkali metal element was manufactured under the same conditions.
- the concentration of potassium atoms in the core portion was 200 atomic ppm at maximum and 150 atomic ppm on the central axis.
- the diameter of the region where potassium was added to 10 atomic ppm or more was 6 mm.
- the concentration of dissolved oxygen molecules in the core was the maximum near the central axis of the first rod, and the value was 180 mol ppb.
- an optical fiber preform was manufactured with different conditions for the solidification step (step S5).
- the absolute pressure in the silica glass pipe is reduced to 97 kPa or less and 80 kPa or more, and the surface temperature is set to 2150 ° C. by an external heat source.
- the surface temperature is set to 2150 ° C. by an external heat source.
- a core portion (outer diameter 25 mm) containing an alkali metal element was obtained.
- the maximum potassium atom concentration in the core portion was 500 atomic ppm.
- the diameter of the region where potassium was added to 10 atomic ppm or more was 6 mm.
- the concentration of dissolved oxygen molecules in the core was the maximum near the central axis of the first rod, and the value was 234 mol ppb.
- the transmission loss at the wavelength of 1550 nm of the optical fiber was 0.185 dB / km.
- the magnitude of the transmission loss of the optical fiber differs depending on the conditions of the solidification step (step S5) in the optical fiber preform manufacturing method (and the composition distribution of the optical fiber preform based on this condition).
- the present inventor conducted intensive studies on the conditions of the solidification process, the composition distribution of the optical fiber preform, and the transmission loss of the optical fiber, and the conditions of the solidification process for obtaining an optical fiber with a low transmission loss. The composition distribution of the optical fiber preform was determined.
- the first core portion 11 has a concentration of oxygen molecules contained in glass in a part or all of the region where the alkali metal atom concentration is 100 atomic ppm or more.
- the concentration of oxygen molecules contained in the glass is 10 mol ppb or less in the region where the alkali metal atom concentration is 50 atomic ppm or less.
- the core 10 is preferably made of glass containing no Ge, and the relative refractive index difference based on pure silica glass is preferably in the range of ⁇ 0.1% to + 1.0%. By doing so, the scattering loss due to Ge or the like can be reduced, and the transmission loss at a wavelength of 1550 nm can be lowered to 0.158 dB / km.
- the alkali metal atom concentration is not more than 4,000 atomic ppm.
- the alkali metal atom concentration is as high as 4,000 atomic ppm or more, the oxygen atom in the glass is consumed by the alkali metal atom, so that the glass becomes oxygen-deficient and oxygen-deficient glass defects are generated. Since the transmission loss increases due to the absorption loss due to the glass defect, a low transmission loss cannot be achieved. Therefore, the alkali metal atom concentration is preferably 4,000 atomic ppm or less.
- the Cl concentration of the core 10 is 500 atomic ppm or less.
- the Cl concentration is 500 atomic ppm, there are more oxidizing components such as oxygen and chlorine in the glass, and oxygen-rich glass defects are likely to occur. Since the transmission loss increases due to the absorption loss due to the glass defect, a low transmission loss cannot be achieved. Therefore, it is preferable that the Cl concentration of the core portion 10 is 500 atomic ppm or less.
- the core portion 10 includes a first core portion 11 to which an alkali metal element is added, and a second core portion in which the Cl concentration on the outer periphery of the first core portion 11 is 10,000 ppm or more. 12 is preferable. Since the alkali metal element has a high diffusion rate, it diffuses out of the fiber core in the drawing process. At this time, it is presumed that the outer peripheral portion to which oxygen is not added tends to be in an oxygen-deficient state due to the diffused alkali metal element, resulting in an increase in loss. Therefore, it is preferable to suppress the generation of oxygen-deficient defects due to diffusion of alkali metal elements by adding Cl in advance to the glass to be diffused in a high concentration.
- the average K concentration of the entire core portion 10 is preferably 5 to 100 atomic ppm, and most preferably 10 to 30 atomic ppm.
- the alkali metal atom of the core part 10 couple
- This alkali chloride is presumed to cause scattering loss due to aggregation in the glass.
- the optical fiber manufacturing method of the present embodiment is a method for manufacturing the optical fiber preform of the present invention, wherein the oxygen partial pressure in the silica glass pipe containing alkali metal atoms having an average concentration of 5 atomic ppm or more is 1 kPa or more and 80 kPa.
- the core part 10 including the first core part 11 is made by heating and crushing the silica glass pipe to a temperature of 1,600 ° C. or higher with an external heat source in the state kept below, and the periphery of the core part 10
- the optical fiber preform 1 including the core part 10 and the clad part 20 is manufactured by adding the clad part 20.
- the solidification it is preferable to carry out the solidification in a state where the internal pressure of the silica glass pipe is maintained at 10 kPa or more and 80 kPa or less. Further, it is preferable to carry out the solidification in a state where a gas obtained by mixing an inert gas having a flow rate of 0.25 times to 100 times the oxygen flow rate with oxygen is supplied into the silica glass pipe.
- FIG. 4 is a graph showing the relationship between the maximum oxygen molecule concentration at the center of the core of the optical fiber preform and the transmission loss at the wavelength of 1550 nm of the optical fiber.
- the alkali metal atom concentration at the center of the core of the optical fiber preform was a maximum of 500 atomic ppm.
- the oxygen molecular concentration is less than 30 mol ppb, the loss increases rapidly. This is considered to be because the glass is in an oxygen-deficient state and oxygen-deficient glass defects are generated. Further, even if the oxygen molecular concentration is 200 mol ⁇ ppb or more, the loss increases, but this is considered to be due to the generation of glass defects due to excess oxygen.
- FIG. 5 is a graph showing the relationship between the oxygen molecule concentration at a position 4 mm away from the center of the optical fiber preform and the transmission loss at a wavelength of 1550 nm of the optical fiber.
- the oxygen molecule concentration at the center of the core of the optical fiber preform was 200 mol ⁇ ppm, and the alkali metal atom concentration at a position 4 mm away from the center was 50 atomic50ppm. In the region where the alkali metal atom concentration is 50 atomic ppm or less, if the oxygen molecule concentration is 10 mol ⁇ ppb or more, the transmission loss increases rapidly.
- oxygen molecules are consumed as a result of oxygen molecules reacting with alkali metal atoms in regions where alkali metal atoms are present, whereas oxygen is not consumed in regions where the concentration of alkali metal atoms is low. This is considered to be because oxygen-excess glass defects are likely to occur.
- FIG. 6 is a graph showing the relationship between the partial pressure of oxygen during the solidification step and the concentration of oxygen molecules at the center of the core rod after solidification.
- the concentration of oxygen molecules at which the above-described low transmission loss is obtained.
- the oxygen partial pressure in the silica glass pipe can be set to a desired value by setting the internal pressure of the silica glass pipe to 10 kPa or more and 80 kPa or less.
- the internal pressure of the silica glass pipe is 10 kPa or less, the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the silica glass pipe becomes large and the silica glass pipe is deformed and crushed, or the inside of the silica glass pipe is crushed at a low temperature. Crystallization occurs and causes a decrease in yield.
- oxygen gas in the silica glass pipe is supplied by supplying a gas obtained by mixing an inert gas having a flow rate of 0.25 to 100 times the oxygen flow rate into the silica glass pipe.
- the pressure can be brought to a desired value.
- N 2 , Ar, He or the like is used as the inert gas, and it is particularly preferable to use He. If a gas other than He (especially an active gas) is used, the gas remains in the glass after solidification, creating bubbles and phase separation, causing a variation in outer diameter and disconnection of the optical fiber in the subsequent process. Cause.
- a low-loss optical fiber suitable for digital coherent communication can be manufactured.

Description
Kajihara, et al., J. Ceramic Soc. Japan, 112[10], pp.559-562 (2004).
