Definitions

  • the invention relates to a potato planter comprising a seed potato container and a potato planter toolbar including a plurality of planting units and a method for reducing the width of a potato planter comprising a potato planter toolbar arranged in front of a seed potato container.
  • potatoes are usually planted with an average distance of up to 800 mm there is a natural limit to how many rows the potato planter can plant at the same time without having to take special measures to be able to transport the potato planter on public roads in most parts of the world.
  • An object of the invention is therefore to provide for an advantageous potato planter design regarding space consumption and functionality and a method of reducing the width of a potato planter.
  • the invention provides for a potato planter comprising a seed potato container and a potato planter toolbar including a plurality of planting units, wherein the toolbar is arranged transversely in front of the seed potato container in relation to the direction of travel during potato planting.
  • An outer part of both sides of the toolbar is pivotally connected to a fixed centre part of the toolbar by means of a pivotal joint of the toolbar, so that the outer parts can be rotated between a work position - where the outer parts are arranged substantially transverse to the direction of travel - and a transport position - where the outer parts are arranged substantially parallel to the direction of travel - alongside the seed potato container.
  • the potato planter further comprises outer part displacing means for displacing the outer parts substantially linearly in a direction substantially transverse to the direction of travel.
  • Arranging the toolbar in front of the seed potato container is advantageous in that it provides for an advantageous weight distribution and since the outer parts of the toolbars is folded in under/alongside the seed potato container this arrangement also provides for a very compact design. Furthermore, arranging the toolbar in front of the seed potato container is advantageous in that it provides the operator of the vehicle with a better overview of the potato planter toolbar during planting hereby increasing the chance of detecting errors and failures fast and reducing the need for cameras and other kind of surveillance.
  • the term "alongside said seed potato container” does in this context mean that the outer parts are rotated back - opposite the direction of travel during potato planting i.e. in the direction of the seed potato container - when the outer parts are in the transport position, so that the outer parts extends along at least part of the side of the seed potato container.
  • a rotatable joint is arranged between each of said pivotal joints and said outer parts, wherein said rotatable joints have a rotational axis substantially parallel with said direction of travel at least when said outer parts are in said work position.
  • the present invention is particularly advantageous the wider the planter gets i.e. if the planter is ten, twelve or more rows wide, but when the planter is so wide it is also very sensitive to level differences across the width of the toolbar.
  • This problem could be solved by individually suspending the planting units to allow them to individually travel up and down, but such a suspension arrangement is complex and expensive. It is therefore advantageous to arrange the outer parts so that they are connected to the centre part through rotatable joints allowing that the outer parts may rotate around a rotational axis substantially parallel with the direction of travel during planting, hereby ensuring that the outer parts themselves can adjust their vertical position in relation to the centre part in accordance with level differences of the underlying ground.

  • bottom of the seed potato container incline from the sides and down towards a middle area is advantageous in that it allows gravity to help leading the seed potatoes towards a discharge arrangement at the middle area. Furthermore, this bottom design allows for a compact planter design in that the sloping bottom ensures that the outer parts can be moved at least partly in under the elevated bottom at the sides of the container when the outer parts are in transport position.
