Description
Helmet Attachment System
Field of invention
The present invention generally relates to a device for attaching a helmet to a bicycle. The present invention more particularly relates to an easy operable and user friendly device for securing a helmet to a bicycle in a manner in which the helmet is protected against rain, thieves and damaging impacts.
Prior art
For bike riders it is often a problem to find a suitable way of securing their helmets to their bicycles. The essence of their problem is actually that it is a big hassle having to bring the helmet and that there is a risk of loosing the helmet or damaging it when carrying the helmet during shopping, visiting a cafe, cinema etc. The best solution to these problems is to leave the helmet with the bike, but today there is no good solution to be able to do this. It would be desirable if the helmet could be left secure and protected against bad weather, and that the helmet could be placed on the bike so that it did not interfere with other equipment on the bike and did not leave the rider with problems when parking the bike in tight bicycle stands. Therefore, several attempts have been made to provide solutions that eliminate these "challenges". CA 2132996 Al discloses a locking device for a bicycle helmet. The locking device is secured to the framework or the handlebar of the bicycle by a lock. This locking device does, however, not keep the helmet protected against rain and dust and furthermore the helmet is visible.
The majority of helmet locking devices are only suitable for being used if the helmet comprises apertures configured to receive the required locking means. Many of the helmets that are produced nowadays are
not provided with openings or apertures. Therefore, the majority of helmet locking devices are restricted from being used to lock these helmets to a bicycle. WO 2011135143 Al discloses a protective anti-theft helmet cover comprising a mesh having longitudinal and transversal wires that can envelope the helmet. The cover containing the helmet is configured to be attached to a motorcycle by use of an anchoring. The cover is configured to be folded and be attached to the motorcycle when not being used to safeguard the helmet. This cover is, however, not easy to use and it is not suitable for being used on a bicycle.
Other attempts have been made to secure a helmet to a bicycle or to a motorcycle by means of chains, straps, flexible members or. covers. These devices, however, require two free hands in order to balance and hold in place the helmet while the helmet is positioned and secured to the bicycle or to the motorcycle.
Some of the cover type devices that are configured to protect a helmet against rain, are attached to the bicycle in a way, that allows the helmet to move and thus to be subject to damaging impact from other bicycles being parked adjacent to the bicycle. Moreover when a wet helmet is placed in prior art covers it is very difficult for the moisture to escape and mould may begin growing at the helmet or at the inside of the cover. Besides, when the bike rider is walking with the bicycle while the helmet is contained in the cover, the helmet will dangle and hereby cause inconvenience for the bike rider.
AT 389985 B discloses a plastic bag that is reinforced by means of a mesh. The plastic bag has an opening for receiving a helmet and a watertight zip closure is provided in the bag. In each end of the zip is provided an eyelet that is intended for being locked together with the
corresponding eyelet in order to lock the bag so that theft can be prevented. This bag is configured to be mechanically attached to e.g. a rear rack on a bike, however, this type of bag does not maintain the helmet in a fixed position. In fact the helmet may be moved from side to side and be subject to damaging impacts. Moreover, it takes two hands to put the helmet into the bag.
Accordingly, there is a need for an alternative helmet attachment system which reduces or even eliminates the above mentioned disadvantages of the prior art.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a helmet attachment system capable of protecting a helmet from rain, dust, thieves and impact.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a helmet attachment system that can be used to secure a helmet to a bicycle with the use of only one hand (e.g. when a bike rider is restricted from using both hands in case he is holding a child or objects in the other hand).
It is a further object of the invention to provide a helmet attachment system that is easy to use and hereby potentially will increase the use of helmets by making it more convenient compared to prior art.
Summary of the invention
The object of the present invention can be achieved by a helmet attachment system having the features as defined in claim 1. Preferred embodiments are defined in the dependent sub claims and explained in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The helmet attachment system according to the invention comprises a
cover configured to cover a helmet and secure the helmet to a saddle on a bicycle, a moped, a scooter or a motorcycle, where the cover is configured to be attached to the saddle, where the cover comprises a space and an opening to the space, where the space is configured to contain the helmet and to receive the helmet through the opening when the cover is attached to the saddle. The cover comprises a base member configured to be attached to the saddle, where the cover moreover comprises a top member attached to the base member, where the space is provided between the base member and the top member.
Hereby it is achieved that the helmet attachment system can protect the helmet from rain, dust, thieves and impact because the helmet is contained in the space and mechanically secured to the member by means of the cover.
The helmet attachment system is also capable of securing the helmet to a bicycle, a moped, a scooter or a motorcycle with the use of only one hand. The cover may be secured to the saddle by one hand simply by placing the cover over the member. Hereafter the helmet may be put through the opening and be positioned in the space of the cover by use of one hand.
In this way the helmet attachment system according to the invention is easy to use and thus it can potentially increase the use of helmets.
The saddle may be an adult saddle.
By the term cover is meant a material, preferably a fabric, suitable of covering a helmet and provide a protective layer for protection against water and dust. The material may be any suitable material e.g. a waterproof material or a water resistant material.
The helmet may in principle be any type of helmet, however, it is preferred that the helmet attachment system is adapted to contain a bike helmet. The helmet attachment system is intended to use the saddle of a bicycle as a base for attachment of the helmet. The helmet is, however, preferably not placed directly on the member (e.g. the saddle); the helmet is placed in the space within the cover, so that the cover comprises a layer that is provided between the helmet and the member (e.g. the saddle) when the helmet is secured to the member while being contained by the cover.
In one embodiment according to the invention the helmet attachment system is adapted to be attached to a bicycle baby seat or a child carrier and the cover is configured to contain a bike helmet for kids.
The space is preferably a closed space when the opening is closed, however an opening is need in order to be able to put a helmet into the space. It is preferred that the cover is configured to cover a helmet and secure the helmet to a saddle, where the cover is configured to be attached to the saddle, where the cover comprises a space and an opening to the space, where the space is configured to contain the helmet and to receive the helmet through the opening when the cover is attached to the saddle.
The attachment may in principle be attached to any type of saddle, it is however preferred that the saddle is a bicycle saddle. It may be an advantage that the space in the cover constitutes a closable bag. In this way the space is capable of being used as a bag that is configured to receive and contain a helmet.
It is preferred that the cover comprises a base member configured to be attached to a saddle, where the cover moreover comprises a top member being attached to the base member, where the space is provided between the base member and the top.
Hereby it is achieved that a reliable and easy producible cover can be manufactured. The top member is preferably made in a waterproof material or a water resistant material, while the base member may be made in another material if desired.
It is preferred that the helmet attachment system is configured to secure a helmet to the saddle of a bicycle or to a bicycle baby seat or a child carrier.
It may be an advantage that the base member comprises an elastic material or a flexible member configured to be attached to a saddle, a bicycle baby seat or a child carrier and hereby secure the base member to the saddle, the bicycle baby seat or the child carrier.
Hereby the cover can easily be attached to the saddle, the bicycle baby seat or the child carrier by use of one hand only. The elastic material or the flexible member may preferably be arranged at the bottom part of the cover so that the elastic material or the flexible member can engage directly around the saddle, the bicycle baby seat or the child carrier. Hereafter, when the cover has been attached to the saddle, the bicycle baby seat or the child carrier the helmet can easily be put into the space within the cover. The elastic material and/or the flexible member may comprise an elastomer (e.g. elastic, a rubber band or an elastic band).
It is preferred that the space in the cover is configured to receive, contain and keep in place a helmet. The cover may be flexible, however, the size of the cover, may preferably be adapted to fit helmets of a specific size range.
It may be beneficial that the cover comprises an opening to the space and that the cover comprises a zipper or another means for opening and closing the opening. Hereby it is achieved that the opening easily and quickly can be closed and opened by the use of one hand. Moreover it may be possible to lock the opening and hereby prevent the access to the space.
It is preferred that the cover comprises ventilating means, preferably a breathable fabric.
Hereby it is achieved that the cover is capable of drying a wet helmet that is received by and contained in the cover. Accordingly, the attachment system may be capable of receiving a wet helmet and drying the helmet while it is contained in the cover.
It is preferred that the base member comprises a breathable fabric so that the cover is capable of being ventilated through the breathable fabric. The use of a breathable fabric will make it possible to provide a highly reliable and easy producible cover with the capacity of drying a wet helmet.
It is preferred that at least a part of the base member is made in a breathable fabric.
It may be an advantage that the cover is attached to a receptacle. It is preferred that the receptacle is attached to a bicycle, preferably to the
back side or near the backside of the saddle. Hereby it is achieved that the cover is easy to attach to the saddle and that the cover is attachable to the saddle by use of only one hand. It is preferred that the receptacle is configured to be opened and closed and that the receptacle comprises a container and a lid and that the cover is attached to the container. Hereby it is achieved that the cover can be put into the container, and that the container may be closed so that the cover is nicely contained in the container, when it is not used to attach a helmet to the saddle.
It is preferred that the cover is attached to the inside of the container and that the cover is configured to be completely contained in the receptacle and that the receptacle can be closed when the cover is contained in the receptacle.
Hereby it is achieved that the cover can be contained completely within the interior of the container of the receptacle. When the container is closed, the cover is not visible from the outside. Accordingly, the cover of the attachment system can be stored and hided away in the container, until the cover is needed for attaching the helmet to the saddle.
It may be beneficial that the cover is attached to the outside of the container. Still, it may be possible to place the cover in the container when the cover is not used to cover the helmet.
It is preferred that the receptacle comprises an attachment member that is configured to be attached to one or more rod member(s) of a saddle. Hereby it is achieved that the attachment system can be attached to the majority of all bicycle saddles. It is particular preferred that the receptacle comprises an attachment member that is configured
to be attached to two rod members of a saddle since the most typical saddle construction comprises two rod members.
The rod members normally comprise a basically horizontally extending section. It is preferred that the attachment member is configured to be attached to the section of the rod members that extends horizontally, since this provides the most reliable and user friendly attachment of the attachment system to the saddle. It may be an advantage that the container is more narrow that the saddle. Hereby it is achieved that the container does not cause inconvenience for the user of the attachment system while sitting on the saddle and to protect the product when leaning the bike towards a wall etc. However, the container may be wider than the saddle (especially if the saddle is a sport bicycle saddle).
It is preferred that the receptacle is arranged behind the saddle and that the end wall of the container has an arced shape corresponding to the shape of the backside of the saddle. Hereby a tight connection between the container and the backside of the saddle can be achieved.
It is preferred that the helmet attachment system comprises a clamp configured to engage with a fastening member (e.g. a screw) that is mechanically attached to the attachment member, and that the attachment system comprises an elongate support member extending between the container and the attachment member.
Hereby it is possible to displace the container relative to the attachment member so that the container abuts the backside of the saddle, while the attachment member is arranged under the horizontally extending portion of the rod member(s). Hereby it is possible to provide a reliable and robust construction.
It is preferred that the lid is detachable mounted to the container. Hereby it is possible to replace the lid easily and to remove the lid in order to clean up the interior of the container.
It may be an advantage that the cover comprises an attachment plate that is configured to be attached to the receptacle.
Hereby the cover can easily be attached to the receptacle and that the cover, accordingly, can be easily attached to the saddle prior to securing the helmet to the saddle, by placing the helmet in the space inside the cover.
It is preferred that the cover comprises an attachment plate that is configured to be attached to the inside portion of the end wall of the container.
Hereby the cover can be fixed firmly to the container and the cover may easily be contained completely in the interior of the container, while the cover is not being used to secure a helmet to the saddle.
It is preferred that the attachment member, the support member and the container is a one-piece body. Hereby a reliable and strong construction can be provided. The one-piece body may be moulded in a plastic material (e.g. containing fibre-reinforced polymers such as carbon-fibre reinforced plastic or glass-reinforced plastic).
It is preferred that the cover is provided with means for being locked (e.g. with a padlock and an eye). Hereby it is possible to lock and secure the cover against thieves. It is possible to provide the cover with an eye and a zipper handle (having an eye member configured to engage the lock) that may be lock together with each other, so that the
cover can be locked.
It may be an advantage that the cover is provided with a zipper having two zipper pulls, where the zipper extends along the entire periphery of the cover. In this case the two zipper pulls may be locked to each other e.g. by means of a padlock.

Detailed description of the invention
Referring now in detail to the drawings for the purpose of illustrating preferred embodiments of the present invention, an attachment system
2 according to the present invention is illustrated in Fig. 1 a. The attachment system 2 comprises a cover 4 having a top member 66 that is attached to a base member 78. The cover 4 comprises a zipper 74 that is connecting the top member 66 and the base member 78.
The cover 4 comprises an interior space 82 defined by the base member 78 and the top member 66. The cover is configured to receive and contain a helmet. The zipper 74 comprises a zipper handle 80 that intended for opening and closing the zipper 74. When the zipper 74 is opened there is access to the interior space 82 of the cover 4 and thus a helmet can be placed in the interior space 82 of the cover. When the helmet has been put: into place within the interior 82 of the cover 4, the zipper 74 can be closed in order to close the cover 4.
It is possible to use a lock (not shown), for instance a padlock; to safely lock the cover 4 in order to avoid that the helmet is stolen. The cover 4 may be provided with means (e.g. an eye) for locking the zipper handle 80 to the cover 4.
The cover 4 comprises an attachment plate 76 that is mechanically secured to the top member 66 of the cover 4. The attachment plate 76 is equipped with three openings 52 each configured to receive a fastening means (e.g. a screw). Hereby the cover 4 can be attached to a bicycle by mechanical means. The attachment plate 76 may be provided with another number of openings 52 and other attachment means may be used to secure the cover 4 to a member on a bicycle. It is possible to have several cover sizes corresponding to helmets of different sizes. By way of example it is possible to have a small cover for bike helmets for kids and to have a large cover for bike helmets for
adults.
Fig. 1 b) illustrates a top view of an attachment system 2 according to the invention. The attachment system 2 comprises a receptacle 8 that is mounted behind the saddle 22 of a bicycle. The frame 68 and the rear rack 72 of the bicycle are indicated in Fig. 1 b). The attachment system 2 comprises the cover 4 shown in Fig. 1 a), however, the cover 4 is contained in the receptacle 8 that is mounted above the rear rack 72. Three fix points 70, 70', 70" are indicated in Fig. 1 b). These fix points 70, 70', 70" indicate the points at which the base member 78 of the cover 4 is fixed to the saddle 22. It should be underlined that the two fix points 70 and 70' are actually provided under the lid 12 of the receptacle 8 - these fix points are merely indicated for illustration purposes. The fix points 70, 70', 70" define a triangle 90 indicated with dotted lines. This triangular attachment form provides great stability and makes it easy for the user of the attachment system 2 to secure the base member 78 of the cover 4 to the saddle 22. It is preferred that the base member 78 of the cover 4 is equipped with an elastic material or a flexible member (not shown) suitable for being used to attach the base member 78 of the cover 4 to the saddle 22 of a bicycle. By having three almost symmetrically arranged fix points 70, 70', 70" like shown in Fig. 1 b) a fast and reliable fixation of the base member 78 of the cover 4 can be achieved. Moreover, it is possible to attach the base member 78 of the cover 4 by the use of one hand only. This is crucial in many everyday situations (e.g. when parents pick up their children and hold the child in one hand). It is preferred that the base member 78 of the cover 4 is equipped with an elastic material or a flexible member (not shown) suitable for being used to attach the base member 78 of the cover 4 to the saddle 22 of a
bicycle. Hereby it is possible to attach a helmet to a bicycle by one hand only.
Initially the lid 12 of the receptacle 8 is opened and the cover 4 is pulled out from the receptacle 8. Hereafter the base member 78 is attached to the saddle 22 of the bicycle by bringing the elastic material or the flexible member of the base member 78 in a position, in which the base member 78 of the cover 4 is attached to the saddle 22. When the cover 4 is secured to the saddle 22, the cover is opened by use of the zipper handle 80 and there is access to the interior space 82 inside the cover 4. The helmet is now put into this space 82 and hereafter the zipper 74 is close by using the zipper handle 80. It is possible to use alternative locking and opening mechanisms e.g. buttons, hook-and-loop fasteners or other suitable means.
The top member 66 is preferably made in a water-resistant material, a water-repelling material or a waterproof material. In this way the helmet is protected against water, dust and snow. The cover 4 protects the helmet against impacts, dust and water.
Preferably, the base member 78 comprises ventilation holes and/or is made in a material that allows for moisture and/or water to escape from the interior space 82 of the cover 4. In this way it is possible to place a wet helmet in the cover 4 without causing a problem due to accumulated water and moisture in the interior space 82 of the cover 4.
Fig. 2 illustrates a schematic perspective exploded view of a cover 4 according to the invention. The cover 4 comprises a top member 66 configured to cover a helmet (e.g. a bike helmet). Thus, the shape of the top member 66 basically corresponds to the outside shape of a
helmet.
The cover 4 moreover comprises a base member 78 arranged under the top member 66. The base member 78 is equipped with an attachment plate 76 provided with three holes 53. The attachment plate 76 may be made of fabric, and it may be provided as an elongate member being a flap 88 in the opposite end.
The base member 78 is equipped with a zipper 74. The top member 66 and the base member 78 are intended to be joint e.g. by stitching, sewing or gluing. The zipper 74 is preferably provided between the base member 78 and the top member 66.
It is preferred that the bottom layer 84 is made in a breathable material that allows moisture vapour to be transmitted through the material.
The base member 78 comprises a bottom layer 84 being the bottom of the space 82 between the top member 66 and the base member 76 of the cover 4.
The cover 4 is particularly intended for use on bicycles, however, the cover 4 may also be used elsewhere, e.g. on scooters and motorcycles.
Fig. 3 illustrates an attachment system 2 according to the invention being used to secure a helmet to the saddle of a bicycle 6. The attachment system 2 comprises a cover 4 that is secured to the saddle provide on the seat post of the bicycle 6. The cover 4 is attached to the inside structure of a container 10 that is attached to the bicycle 6. The container 10 is open and the cover 4 has been taken out in order to be attached to the saddle 22 of the bicycle 6. The container 10 comprises a hook 14 provided centrally at the rear potion of the container 10.
A helmet is coved by the cover 4 and hereby the helmet is protected
against water, dust and impacts. The helmet is maintained in its place on the saddle by means of the cover 4 that is attached directly to the saddle 22 of the bicycle 6. Accordingly, the bicycle may be parked outside and the helmet will still be protected against thieves, water and impact from people walking by or bicycles placed next to the bicycle 6.
The bike rider will also be able to "just" walk with his bike bicycle with the helmet secured like shown in Fig. 3. The helmet will be protected against impact from other bicycles and people.
Fig. 4 illustrates different perspective views of a receptacle 8 according to the invention.
Fig. 4 a) is a side view of a receptacle 8 according to a preferred embodiment of the invention. The receptacle 8 comprises a container 10 that is mechanically connected to an elongate support member 20. An attachment member 56 is provided at the distal end of the support member 56. The attachment member 56 is configured to receive a clamp 16 that is used to mount the receptacle 8 to e.g. a bicycle.
The container 10, the support member 20 and the attachment member 56 are provided as a one-piece body e.g. moulded in a plastic material (e.g. containing fibre-reinforced polymers such as carbon-fibre reinforced plastic or glass-reinforced plastic).
The receptacle 8 moreover comprises a lid 12, preferably made in silicone, rubber or another suitable material, preferable a flexible material. Since the lid 12 is visible, the lid 12 may preferably be detectable mounted to the container 10. In this way the user of the attachment system 2 is capable of choosing a lid having the desired
colour and/or pattern.
It is possible to use a lid 12 that is made in a hard material, e.g. a hard plastic material.
The lid 12 is attached to the backside of the container 10 by means of barbed attachment pipes 62 (see Fig. 4 c and Fig. 4 d). The lid 12 is provided with an opening 44 configured to receive a hook 14 provided at the container 10. When the hook 14 is inserted into the opening 44, the lid 12 is mechanically secured to the container 10, however, the lid 12 can easily be released from the container by lifting the lid 12 and hereby removing and releasing the opening 44 from the engagement with the hook 14 of the container 10. It is possible to attach the cover 4 to the lid 12 in various different manners. By way of example it is possible to fix the cover 4 to the lid 12 by providing a cavity in the cover 4 and arranging a hereby attaching a protrusion of the lid 12 in the cavity. Fig. 4 b) illustrates a perspective view of the receptacle 8 shown in Fig. 4 a). The receptacle 8 has a container 10 that is arranged under a clamp 16. The clamp 16 has to opposite directed arms 58 and two parallel extending plate members 42 configured to be received and hereby mechanically engage with corresponding apertures 38, 40 provided in the attachment member 56 of the container 10. The clamp 16 is equipped with a hole 36 for receiving a nut (see Fig. 5). The nut that has to be received in the hole 36 is configured to receive a threaded bolt of a corresponding screw (see Fig. 6) that is inserted through the hole 34 in the attachment member 56 of the container 10.
It can be seen that the support member 20 of the container 10 is basically plate-shaped. The container 10 is provided with four holes 26
configured to receive four corresponding barbed attachment pipes 62 provided in the lid 12. Hereby the lid 12 can be firmly attached to the container by simple mechanical means. A drainage hole 60 is provided in the bottom of the container 10 so that water from the cover 4 can escape from the container 10, when a wet cover 4 has been packed into the receptacle 8.
Fig. 4 c) illustrates a cross-sectional side view of the lid shown in Fig. 4 a). The lid 12 has an opening 44 configured to receive the hook 14 of the container 10 and hereby fix the lid 12 to the container 10. The lid moreover comprises a barbed attachment pipe 62 configured to be engaged into the holes 26 provided in the container 10 and hereby secure the lid 12 to the container 10.
Fig. 4 d) illustrates a perspective view of the lid 12 shown in Fig. 4 a) and in Fig. 4 c). It can be seen that the lid 12 comprises four barbed attachment pipes 62. Fig. 5. illustrates a perspective exploded view of a preferred embodiment of the attachment system 2 according to the invention. The attachment system 2 comprises a container 10 with a support member 20 and an attachment member 56, a clamp 16, a cover 4, a cover bracket 30 and a lid 12. The cover 4 has a plate portion 54 with three openings 52. The cover 4 is folded and ready to be put into the container 10.
The container 10 is basically box-shaped and comprises an end wall with a first set of holes 46 (three holes) configured to receive three rivets 28 in order to attach the plate portion 54 of the cover 4 to the end wall of the container 10. The end wall moreover comprises a second set of holes 26 configured to receive four corresponding barbed
attachment pipes 62 from the lid 12.
The container 10 has a support member 20 extending from the end wall to the attachment member 56 that is provided at the distal end of the support member 20.
A clamp 16 is provided above the attachment member 56 and the clamp 16 has two plate members 42 configured to be engaged in corresponding apertures in the attachment member 56. The clamp 16 is configured to be mechanically attached to the attachment member 56 by inserting a screw 32 through a through-going hole 34 in the attachment member 56. The screw 32 is further inserted through the through-going hole 36 in the clamp 16, and the nut 18 is screwed to the threaded end portion of the screw 32. In Fig. 6 it can be seen how the attachment member 56 and the clamp 16 is used to secure the container 10 to a bicycle.
The cover bracket 30 is configured to be used to fix the plate portion 54 of the cover 4 to the end wall of the container 10. The cover bracket 30 comprises three openings 48 adapted to receive the rivets 28. The cover bracket 30 moreover comprises four recesses 50 that are configured to engage with the attachment pipes 62 of the lid 12.
The lid 12 comprises an opening 44 configured to receive the hook 14 at the container 10, when the lid 12 is used to close the container 10.
The container 10 is preferably made in a hard plastic material, while the lid 12 preferably is made in a more flexible material e.g. silicone or rubber. The lid 12 may; however, be made in a hard material as well. Fig. 6 illustrates the attachment system 2 shown in Fig. 5. The attachment system 2 is mounted on two rod members 64 under the saddle 22 of a bicycle. The clamp 16 is positioned above the two rod
members 64, while the attachment member 56 is arranged under the two rod members 64. The support member 20 extends basically perpendicular to the seat post 24 and at the proximal end of the support member 20 the container 10 of the receptacle 8 is provided.
The receptacle 8 comprises a lid 12 that is brought into a locked position in which the hook 14 of the container 10 is engaged in the opening in the lid 12. The cover 4 is folded and put into the container 10.
The attachment system 2 according to the invention provides an easy and user friendly way of securing a helmet to the saddle 22 of a bicycle.
