Definitions
- Embodiments of the invention relate to canoe devices for use with pouch systems.
- Pouches are used as containers for liquids and other flowable media. More recently, pouches have begun to be used in place of traditional containers - such as bottles - in many consumer industries. Pouches are preferred in some industries for their low cost, minimized waste, and ease of use.
- the pouch In order to remove a fluid or material contained in a pouch, the pouch must either be broken or torn open or some device must exist to facilitate removal of the material from within the pouch.
- canoe devices In the case of pouches holding fluids, canoe devices are often sealed into a pouch or integrated therewith to allow a pump or other device to be attached to the canoe and to remove material from the pouch.
- conventional canoes - or plastic pourers - may include one or more welding ribs extending circumferentially around a neck of the device.
- the welding rib may also include a smaller welding flash located along the rib.
- canoe devices having improved weld ribs are provided.
- canoes having features for fitting with a pump or dispensing system are described.

- a canoe may be cored out to save material, reduce weight, and provide rigidity to the canoe structure as illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 5.
- a canoe 100 may include one or more horizontal ribs 1 10 extending perpendicular to a fluid flow path through the canoe.
- One or more vertical ribs 1 15 may join the one or more horizontal ribs 110 to provide support to the canoe structure.
- additional support ribs 118 may span the one or more horizontal ribs 110, vertical ribs 115 or any combination thereof to provide further support to the canoe.
- a canoe 100 according to certain embodiments of the invention is illustrated in FIGs. 1 and 2. As illustrated, the canoe 100 may include a central passage for
- Horizontal ribs 1 10 extending from the central passage may form supports to which a pouch or container may be welded or fixed. Openings between the horizontal ribs 1 10 save material.
- a canoe 100 as illustrated in FIGs. 3 and 4 may include openings between horizontal ribs 110 and vertical ribs 115 through which product may flow. As illustrated, an opening in a lower horizontal rib 110 may allow a fluid to flow into the opening and through the central passage of the canoe 100.
- a canoe 100 may include one or more channels 125 in a surface of the canoe, which surface may be welded to a pouch as illustrated in FIGS. 6 through 8.
- the one or more channels may allow material from the pouch or the canoe to flow and seal during attachment of a pouch to the canoe.
- a tab 120 or feathered edge 128 may extend off the ends of a canoe 100 to provide additional welding surface with a pouch.
- a canoe 100 may include one or more apertures 130 or windows in the ends of the canoe 100 as illustrated in FIGS. 9 and 10.
- the one or more apertures 130 may allow pouch films to be welded through the canoe 100 during attachment of a canoe 100 to a pouch. For example, heat contacts may weld a first pouch film to a second pouch film through the one or more apertures 130 during assembly.
- a canoe 100 may include one or more channels 140 having one or more ramps 142 defining the channels 140 as illustrated in FIGS. 1 1 and 12.
- the one or more ramps 142 may end in a point which may melt during assembly of a canoe 100 with a pouch and material melted during such assembly may flow into the one or more channels 140.
- a canoe 100 according to other embodiments of the invention is illustrated in FIGS. 13 through 15.
- the canoe 100 may include non-linear weld ribs 150 along one or more surfaces of the canoe.
- the one or more non-linear weld ribs 150 increases the surface area of weld rib 150 along the canoe 100, which may improve seal during assembly.
- Canoes 100 having other weld rib 150 configurations for increasing the total area or surface area of weld ribs 150 along a canoe 100 surface are illustrated in FIGS. 16 through 26. As illustrated, checkered weld rib 150 patterns, cross-hatching patterns, circular patterns, and oval patterns may be used. In addition, the alternative weld rib 150 designs may be combined with features such as an aperture 130 on the canoe 100. In addition, the width and depth of the weld ribs 150 may be altered or designed to promote a desired material flow during welding of the pouch to a canoe 100 according to embodiments of the invention.
- a canoe 200 according to other embodiments of the invention is illustrated in FIGS. 27 through 30.
- a canoe 200 may include a linear top surface and a non-linear or curved bottom surface.
- the addition of the curved bottom surface may increase the amount of surface area of the canoe 200.
- the curved bottom surface may allow for larger weld ribs 250 or additional weld ribs 250 to be formed.
- a canoe 200 may include a hollow area 290 in a top of the canoe as illustrated in FIGS. 28 and 30 or in a bottom area.
- a hollow area 290 may also include attachment features 292 which may be used to connect a pump or other device to the canoe 200 for dispensing a product from a pouch attached to the canoe 200.
- a canoe 200 may include apertures 230.
- a canoe 200 may also include one or more channels 280 along a surface of the canoe 200 that would be enclosed within an assembled pouch and canoe 200 combination. The one or more channels 280 may promote the flow of product to a outlet 285 of the canoe 200.
- FIGS. 31 through 34 A pump 300 and canoe 200 combination according to various embodiments of the invention is illustrated in FIGS. 31 through 34. As illustrated, a pump 300 may be inserted into a hollow area 290 of a canoe 200 as illustrated in FIG. 31. The pump 300 may include features to mate with the attachment features 292 and snap into the canoe 200.
