L'invention concerne un moteur à combustion interne à pistons à mouvement alternatif comportant un mécanisme d'embiellage; au moins une culasse de cylindre dont les canaux d'admission et d'échappement sont asservis par au moins respectivement une soupape d'échange des gaz, réalisée sous la forme d'une soupape d'admission ou d'une soupape d'échappement, lesdites soupapes pouvant être actionnées par des cames d'au moins un arbre à cames (1) et par des éléments de transmission entraînés par celles-ci, les cames étant réalisées sous la forme de cames coulissantes avec au moins deux cames par unité de cames coulissantes (3) qui sont disposées solidaires en rotation mais mobiles axialement au moyen d'une denture intérieure sur un arbre de base (2) à denture extérieure (4); au moins un dispositif, fixe par rapport au moteur à combustion interne, pour le déplacement des unités de cames coulissantes (3) dans différentes positions axiales au moyen de gorges de translation coopérant avec une broche d'actionnement et situées sur la périphérie des unités de cames coulissantes (3); et des paliers pour le montage radial et axial de l'arbre à cames (1) sur un composant du moteur à combustion interne, l'arbre de base (2) étant guidé sur le composant du moteur à combustion interne au moyen de paliers qui sont disposés entre les unités de cames coulissantes (3).
