Definitions
- the present invention relates to a circuit arrangement, the description thereof as a control circuit arrangement and a method for controlling a current source coupled to a load.
- the backlight is generated by light emitting diodes (LEDs).
- LEDs light emitting diodes
- Several controlled current sources are used to set the highest possible load current flowing through the LEDs, which are arranged in LED chains.
- a corresponding arrangement can be taken from FIG. 1, in which a plurality of current sources SQn are coupled to the LED chains LK.
- the voltages VC are so Set Default that is still just a correct operation of the Stromquel ⁇ len SQn possible.
- the DC / DC voltage regulator transforms an input voltage VIN to a corresponding load voltage VL on the basis of this input.
- the load voltage VL drops across the current source SQn and the load LK.
- This control circuit ensures that the current source SQn is operated at the desired operating point. Since the LED strings LK can all have a different voltage drop, all voltages VC from the DC / DC feedback circuit must be taken into account. Decisive for the adjustment of the load voltage VL is that LED chain LK, which causes the largest voltage drop. This has the consequence that too high a voltage VC is set for the remaining current sources SQn. This in turn leads to an increased power loss of the respective current sources SQn.
- the arrangement shown in FIG. 1 also has an LED monitor which checks whether an LED chain LK is interrupted or short-circuited.
- the detection of an interrup ⁇ chung an LED chain LK is necessary for such a loop, otherwise the DC / DC feedback circuit would continually increase the load voltage VL. Since this effect leads to high power losses at the other current sources SQn, the broken LED chain LK must be switched off.
- the detection of a partial or complete short circuit in an LED chain LK is necessary in order to prevent a thermal destruction of the affected current source SQn due to high power dissipation.
- FIG. 2 shows the profile of the load voltage VL and the voltage VC for different operating situations.
- the voltages VL and VC initially increase until an optimum operating range (VCmin, VLmin) is reached.
- a typical load tensioning ⁇ voltage VL is moving in the range between 5 and 500 V, depending on the number of LEDs that are connected in series. Since the temperature and thus the voltage drop across the LED chains changes during operation, the load voltage VL also changes.
- Figure 2 also shows various operating situations for the voltage VC (VC (a) to VC (e)).
- the difference between the voltage VL and the voltage VC indicates the voltage drop across the corresponding LED chain LK.
- the voltage VC (a) shows an application case for dimming an LED chain LK.
- Dimming a LED chain LK is achieved via a pulse width modulation of the voltage ⁇ signal VC.
- the pulse width modulation switches the current source SQn on and off at definable time intervals, thus causing dimming of the LED chain LK.
- the load voltage VL is kept constant.
- the voltages VC (b) and VC (c) show the voltage curve at different LED chains LK. This shows by way of example that the voltage drop across different LED chains LK can be of different sizes.
- VC (c) is the voltage relevant for the regulation of the load voltage VL, since it has a lower value than the voltage VC (b).
- the voltage VC (d) shows an example of an LED string having an interrupt. Thus, the entire load voltage VL drops on the LED chain.
- the voltage VC (e) shows a voltage curve for a partially short-circuited LED chain LK. Due to the short circuit ⁇ within the LED chain LK thus drops an increased voltage VC (e) at the current source SQn and leads to an increased power loss.
- the current sources SQn should be arranged outside of an integrated circuit at load currents through the LED chains LK, which exceed the value of 100 mA, since the power loss occurring would be too high, especially on smaller assemblies.
- This leads to an integrated control circuit comprising the DC / DC feedback circuit and the LED monitor of Figure 1 and ex ⁇ tern current sources SQn, which are electrically coupled to the integrated control circuit.
- the integrated control circuit picks up the voltages VC from the LED chains LK to adjust the DC / DC voltage regulator and to perform the LED monitor functions. For this tapping of the voltages VC, however, the integrated control circuit requires a connection that is also designed for high voltages.

If the collector-emitter voltage VCE falls below a value which is designated by the operating points AP, then the collector current IC and thus the current amplification collapse. In this case, the collector-emitter voltage VCE must be corrected upward again.
- collector-emitter voltage VCE rises too high, the power loss of the NPN transistor increases. In this situation, the collector-emitter voltage VCE must again be set to smaller values.

Thus, the transistor is in the saturation region. Due to this change in the current gain IC / IB, the optimum current gain IC / IB and thus the operating points AP can be determined.
- the high-voltage high-voltage connection A4 is no longer required. In addition, the number of connections of the control circuit is reduced.
- the high-voltage terminal A4 can be omitted, although the detection of a short circuit within the LED chains LK without tapping the voltage potential between the LED chains LK and the power sources SQn takes place.
- An LED chain LK which is at least partially short-circuited, has a lower voltage drop. For this reason, a larger voltage drop for the current source SQn. Due to this larger voltage drop between the collector and the emitter of the current source SQn, the bipolar transistor heats up and can also be thermally destroyed. Therefore, it is necessary to turn off the corresponding current source SQn upon detection of a short circuit.
- a feature of the temperature of a bipolar transistor is its base-emitter voltage VBE.
- the base-emitter voltage VBE is available on the control circuit and the power source controller 1.
- this information can be evaluated within the control circuit to monitor the temperature of the bipolar transistor and thus a possible overheating and a possible short circuit.
- an ambient temperature of z. B. 80 ° C and a maximum junction temperature of the bipolar transistor of about 150 ° C there is a comfortable area to detect overheating of the bipolar transistor.
- the junction temperature of the bipolar transistor is approximately 10 to 30 K higher than the ambient temperature. This is significantly influenced by the thermal resistance of the housing of the bipolar transistor.
- an ambient temperature of 85 ° C this results in a maximum junction temperature of about 115 ° C in normal operation.
- FIG. 6 shows characteristic curves of a bipolar transistor in which the base-emitter voltage VBE is plotted for different constant values of the base current IB above the junction temperature.
- the base-emitter voltage VBE is dependent on the value of the base current IB. This means that the threshold value with which the current base-emitter voltage VBE is compared must be adapted in accordance with the present base current IB.
- This threshold can be set in several ways. So this threshold can be set as a constant factor in the circuit design. Alternatively, it can be set digitally or analogously, e.g. B. via a digital serial interface or an external adjustable resistor. Another way of determining the threshold.
- Threshold is that the threshold is derived from the average of the base-emitter voltages VBE of all power sources. Assuming that the majority of the LED strings LK has no short circuit, the majority of the current source transistors have a regular value of the base-emitter voltage VBE. Thus, the threshold value can all base-emitter voltages VBE ⁇ be derived value from the mean. If z. B. a bipolar transistor has a base-emitter voltage VBE, which is more than 50 mV below the average value of the base-emitter voltages VBE, so the relevant power source SQn and thus the corresponding LED chain LK is off.

- the channel controller 2 at the output of the activation signal AS available, which is the load current controller 10 a is supplied. If there is an interruption within the LED chain LK, no load current IL flows. As a result, there is a very small voltage drop across the resistor Rref.
- the load current regulator 10a then continues to increase the control signal IB with the aim of increasing the collector-emitter voltage VCE of the bipolar transistor SQn by the voltage drop across the resistor Rref. Reaches the threshold value, the control signal IB, which is defined by the interrupt reference signal OLD-REF, the interrup ⁇ monitoring detector 13a outputs the interrupt signal US at its output.

- the current amplification factor which is defined by the ratio of the load current IL to the control current IB, is compared to a limit by the monitoring device Ib. This limit can be changed by varying the second reference signal source SP2 in its value. This makes it possible to set the current amplification factor for all LED strings LK centrally in the reference circuit 4b. In the circuit arrangement from FIG. 11, it is necessary to fix the current amplification factor individually for each LED chain LK by way of the adjustable resistor 111.

If the current current amplification factor drops to a value of 80 at a load current IL of 100 mA, the control current IB is 1.25 mA. This in turn means that the variable second reference current IBMON of the second reference signal source SP2 must also be adjusted to a value of 1.25 mA. This is achieved by setting a factor of 1.25 since the second reference current IBMON is set in response to the first reference current IREF. As a result of this Positions, the feedback signal RS is generated to increase the load voltage VL if the current amplification factor falls below a value of 80.

Description
Beschreibung

Stromquelle SQn bzw. jede LED-Kette LK ausgeführt.
